Mini Chess Thread 03-17-2018

20180317 chess pic.jpg

Pic Note

I don't know for sure, but I think the kid is Sammy Reshevsky, who truly was a child prodigy. And I like the guy sitting directly above him with his hand on his head. The look of horror on his face tells you he's just realized that he's hung his queen.

As always, the chess/dress pr0n tread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

1.Bxe5 Qxe5

This is perhaps a hard move to see, but trading the queen is probably best. Here's what can happen if Black tries to save her: 1...Qg6 2.Bxe6 Qxg3 3.Rxf7+ Ke8 4.Bxg3 Bd8 5.Nc4 and White's attack looks unstoppable.

2.Qxe5 dxe5
3.Bxe6

And Black cannot recapture, so White has won a piece outright.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Yes -- that's indeed Sammy Reshevsky, probably the greatest child prodigy of all time -- although as an adult he never quite reached world championship level. But when he was between 5 and 10 years old, he was the strongest kid player ever, a feat no one has matched since. That's one of the most famous pictures in the history of chess.

71 Second problem:

Spent a minute looking for fancy-schamncy ways to mate or win the queen, but saw none. So instead, settled for the basic piece-win with BxB. The black queen is now attack by the rook, so it has to recapture QxB. Then QxQ, and black must reply PxQ. But THEN, after white's BxB, the pawn is pinned and can't recapture the bishop, so white just won a piece (and the game).

84 Spent a minute looking for fancy-schamncy ways to mate or win the queen, but saw none.

138 Has anyone tried Really Bad Chess? It's an iOS/Android app. The first time you start it, it plays some problem scenarios against you to determine your 'ranking', and from then on, when you start a new game, you and the computer get allocated a number of points based on your relative ranking which are represented by the pieces you're given. Both you and the computer get two full ranks of pieces just like in Earth chess, but if you're a hopeless wreck then five of those sixteen pieces might be rooks and three might be queens (placement is random), whereas the better you score, the more pawns you have and the more high-value pieces the computer gets. Because the starting pieces are randomly placed and allocated based on how well you're doing, opening books go out the window immediately and you quickly end up in positions that resemble endgames after a torrent of pawn promotions.

It's a really refreshing way to play if you're like me and find that once you've set a game aside and flushed your mental 'state' of it, it's impossible to return and remember just what the hell you had planned to do next. Ideally, you should be able to sit down at any point in any game sight unseen and take over, but until I get there, having a game like Really Bad Chess comes at it from the other direction because the board is already something you'd never see in the wild before you even make the first move.

Been cutting some slats and stakes to make stake/rail additions to add to the lawn tractor yard-cart.

Cart is one of these, btw. If you run across one at a decent price, it's been great. Dump bed, tailgate slips out. That price seems very high. I paid ~$99.00 for mine on sale. https://preview.tinyurl.com/yazdl8b6

209 Muad'dib, sounds great about the range trip. I also usually find the young'ins are dying to try the M1 - and they love it, of course. So much power, so easy to shoot, and the looks.

Tomorrow depending on weather and a head-cold, hope to shoot in the occasional casual action rifle match. I bring both the M1 and a Mosin-Nagant, to match up with what some other people there are shooting - though lately it's been just the match director (SKS) and me with the M1 shooting classic iron. All the rest with those funny looking black plastic things that seem to terrify all the ignorant hoplophobes.

There's usually a short range stage or two in the pit, so I bring an M1 carbine for that. Just add a pistol stage (1911) and it'd be a WWII 3-gun.

210 Brennan is, like so many of the Obama appointees, a psycho and a lightweight. Actually he has always seemed that way since he first came to my attention years ago.

As time goes by the mystery (to me) of how so many of the people in the Beltway who get to the top do so - when they are lightweights and have lots of other negatives as well - only deepens.

If he had any interesting info, Mueller would have it. But since Mueller is running an illegit special counsel operation not predicated on any actual crimes, who knows.

"But at some point, this has to be seen in the larger context," said McCabe, 49, who says he has voted for every Republican presidential nominee until he sat out the 2016 contest entirely. "And I firmly believe that this is an ongoing effort to undermine my credibility because of the work that I did on the Russia case because of the investigations that I oversaw and impacted that target this administration."
