Thread before the Gardening Thread: First week of Daylight Savings Time [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

sclocks.jpg

Well, it's been almost a week. Have you suffered any ill effects or mishaps due to the start of daylight savings time? Noticed any events that could be related?

There are some statistical correlations between the start of daylight savings time and car crashes, heart attacks, length of legal sentences and a bunch of other things. The link is courtesy of Maggie's Farm, where this didn't get noted until Thursday after the time change. Maybe it DOES slow everybody down.

When did you remember that today is St. Patrick's Day, for example?

St. Patrick's Day and Cultural Appropriation

St. Patrick's Day is immensely popular all over the country, especially among frivolity-loving college students, but is the holiday actually an example of the "cultural appropriation" those same students so detest?

Video. Heh.

Have you got any plans for culturally appropriating St. Patrick's Day? If so, you are in good company. St. Patrick wasn't Irish, either.

I knew that the movement to remove Confederate statutes & memorials would eventually expand to include the Union as well, but I didn't know it would be for such a fucking stupid reason - Mass. state rep wants "General Hooker" sign removed because "hooker" is offensive to women.

3 Daylight savings doesn't have much effect on me but F that anyway, and we need to end it, now. President Trump would make a lot of friends by simply announcing its over.

By the way, this is Caturday of course, but its also the saints day for St Gertrude, patron saint of cats and protection from mice and rats, fever, insanity, and mental illness. I'm not kidding. This being cat-centered internet, I think we should promote that more.

It is bizarre to me how beer companies manage to keep coming up with and enforcing holidays. Cinco De Mayo? Seriously? That's like celebrating US president's day in France. OK technically its a holiday, but nobody actually celebrates it or even really cares other than a day off.

And they don't even take off the 5th of May in Mexico. Its just a day.

11 I found out about the McCabe firing in the middle of the night and it was a really nice surprise for this insomniac. DS Media was really pimping McCabe's "MUH RIGHTS!!@!" caterwauling.

Did anyone notice the irony of Rick Wilson calling DJT a vindictive bitch, when in fact, Wilson himself was crying like a little bitch about his Superhero Civil Servant BFF McCabe?

20 I read that the Irish in Ireland don't do the corned beef and cabbage thing to celebrate St. Patrick's day so it really isn't appropriating anything. Nor green beer.
I'm gonna boil this small piece of beef and then chop it up to make hash. My husband loves the stuff but always eats the canned dog food version **gag** so I thought I'd do the real thing for him. I luv him like that even though he's not Irish. He looks white but never really got a straight answer on his ancestors...probably convicts or something....

46 It only takes me a couple of days to get used to the time change. I'm in the center of my time zone, which is optimum. I think the change is probably more jarring for people who live on the edge of their time zone.

In my case, before the change, the sun was rising well before my alarm clock went off, so I was waking up earlier than I wanted. Now it's just getting light about the time I want to wake up.

I'm still opposed to DST, though. The sun is supposed to be highest around noon, not 1 pm. There's nothing preventing individual businesses from adjusting their hours on a voluntary basis.

The man told officers he “was being targeted and burglarized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a neighbor who lives in [his] building,” the judge wrote in his order. “[He] could not describe the neighbor but stated that the neighbor [can] ‘shape shift, he can change heights and I’m not sure where he comes from’ and ‘to be honest, he looks like Osama Bin Laden.’”

I don't think Obama's appointees needed any directives to do anything they did. They were all hive mind, they all agreed on their ideals and goals without needing to discuss it.

107 Interesting, the Irish kidnapped St Pat and made him a slave for six years. Then he came back and preached to them, converted many, helped along by using many of their pagan/Druid symbols in the Christian symbolism.

But it wasn't just their symbolism, some of the traditions also became "Christian" tradition, for better or worse. The sun symbol on the cross, sunrise services, facing East to the rising sun. Nice traditions, though JC died at sunset and was raised at sunset (sunset being the beginning of the next day). But it's all good.

Now we have much of religion being converted away from Christianity, by more insidious infiltration by the "commies" with PC dogma, but there is resistance. Tradition is strong.

It's a Deep State, but I'm sure there were friendly contacts within keeping Trump ( or someone close to him) abreast of what was going on.....

cool, never heard that word.

going back 40 years I would have said that adopting the tradition could be harmful, and people had their Christian faith misdirected toward nature, and perhaps multiple gods (sun, moon, waters, fire, whatever) ... and there may be some truth to that. (St Pat was co-opting in the other direction)

But the basics of adult belief are up to the individual, to study for himself and teach his children well. Much of traditional song, dance, food, flowers ... unite neighbors in good ways. But this forced mixing of culture, and anti-Western trend ... is another matter.

The Trinity is a terrifying God depicted as a *demon*, an infant Son and Mary/the bodhisattva Kannon. Rice and sake for communion isn't a problem. The GOP is really, really stupid... but not that stupid. There were tricks and stunts they could have pulled in the convention to block Trump but they knew if they did so there would be no more party and probably fire and blood on the streets. They didn't go that path. Even the GOPe isn't that dumb.

Oh, I think you underestimate them.

Some years ago, I came to the conclusion that John Boehner did not want to be the leader of a majority party. He wanted to be leader of the minority, so he could bitch and moan and hold onto his place by being the loyal opposition.

I think that's what his children, the House leaders are doing: voluntarily giving up their majority, and the net result will be allowing the Dems to do the heavy lifting on ridding everyone of Trump.

Make no mistake: Trump is not the enemy either.

We are.

255 We had a lot of Irish families where I grew up. My classmates were usually second or third generation and St. Pat's day was a big deal with a parade and lots of drinking by the guys. (The women went to mass, attended the parade and went home to cook.) Corned beef and cabbage was the traditional meal. It was just called a boiled dinner: corned beef, spuds, carrots, onions and cabbage.

I happen to love the meal and Mrs. JTB indulges me whenever corned beef goes on sale. So it doesn't matter today. And since neither of us has any Irish ancestry, we wouldn't want to appropriate the culture.

Assuming you are talking about a New England boiled dinner, and not just the corned beef by itself...you start at a rolling boil, just to remove the foamy film that rises to the top initially. Then you drop to a low boil (i.e. above a simmer, usually on low medium heat). After a couple of hours you add the onions, then after another hour you add the potatoes and carrots for half an hour. The cabbage goes in for the last 5-10 minutes only, and comes out first.

I don't know. I really don't.

I tend to be better at seeing trends than I am at trying to influence events.

Regardless, it's a crap shoot no matter what. I don't think we can accurately predict the outcome, nor do I think we can effectively plan for it.

I just sorta see everything as coming apart now. A general trend that has been forming since... well, you can probably say it's been forming since the ink was drying on the Constitution.

As it accelerates, we appear to me to be in "Choose the form of the Destructor" mode. We can all clear our heads, try not to think of anything, try to keep the event from coming to a head, but somebody is going to have the equivalent of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man pop into their head.

I don't think they have any sense of the very opposite of what they "know" being a potential ultimate result.

They had a "whenever you see fit" pass to close up to two lanes of travel at any time.

And there's another thing - why didn't they have express approval to close all FOUR lanes.

If transportation saftey or whatever the state agency is called isn't picking up its voice mail for days one can see the utility of such a permit.

My own observation is that it's a simple demographic thing as much as anything. That is, Am Jews are mostly urban blue-staters to begin with.
And they 'disproportionately' work in intellectual fields. By that I mean fields that manipulate words, ideas, and images, as opposed to chainsaws and plows. So they are more susceptible to what Orwell called the "stupidity of the intellectuals."

After decades in academia, I can say that I see no ideological/political difference between Jews and Gentiles in that milieu. Even when it comes to the security of Israel, which USED to be a point of distinction, there is increasingly little difference.

To hazard a guess, because "valentine" has become has been coined to mean "lover", so it doesn't just refer to the saint anymore. So "happy valentine's day" means something like "happy lovers' day".

410 Very depressing, yet unsurprising, claims being made about the omnibus CR that is due to be passed by next week.

Since there is virtually no press any more, it's very hard even for interested people to follow this. But all the signs are ominous. And one key "tell" - just as it has since it took power pledging to have ample time for public examination of all proposed legislation, GOP leadership is keeping details of the CR to itself.

No conditioned appropriations for "sanctuary" jurisdictions. Bailout for insurance companies/O-care. Of course full funding for PP. Allegedly, some kind of internet tax, and "gun control" language.

My pessimism has mostly been based on the very early signs that Trump would be effectively neutered - in many key ways - by a GOP that is as useless/harmful as its most histrionic critics say. And the WH, from all I see and hear, did not recognize this early on, may still not, and is simply going along with the GOP's attempt to slither through elections on inertia and the unhinged radicalism of the Dems. Mid-terms, actually primaries, are by far the biggest lever the WH has to try and change the GOP. Don't see it happening.

And going along with the practice of omnibus CRs, and the virtual disappearance of big votes and chances for veto fights, removes the key tool any WH has in its battle with Congress.

While I think prayer is unjustified (like speaking on an intercom for which you have no reason to think anyone is listening on the other end), I think liberals believe things that go beyond unjustified, to the point of mentally ill. Such as Trump is Stalin, or wanting to control of our borders is akin to genocide of brown people. Or that pious Christians pose a greater security risk than Muslims.

I'd be ok with the principle "we can remove your rights and privileges if we judge you to be insane" if conservatives could do the judging and use that principle to arbitrarily remove judges, bureaucrats and legislators, I'd be in favor of it. Expecting that rules would be adhered to has not served us well, so we need to treat them by the same principles they treat us.

If we were truly fighting, a bill would not be passing that funds Sanctuary Cities, and all the other crap in it .

Trump Adm. is doing their best, yes. And the right has not been baited successfully to start a war in the streets. But that is it.

We, the people, are not even a little bit organized. We do not make calls and fight back against the left using their own tactics. The most recent example is the Gun issue after Broward. The companies got bombarded and responded. By the Left. We were next to invisible.

The Left is winning the culture wars. And thus the future. The supplanting of our population with millions of illegals is one clear indicator of our ineffectiveness or laziness over years and years and years.

So I'm not sanguine about the future. People are sitting back expecting Trump to do it all and it is ridiculous.

448 It's a bit of a mystery.

At select times - the 2006 amnesty debacle and the 2010 "O-care" mid-term come to mind as recent examples - somehow the thinking part of the electorate rises up, and (in the first case, anyway), the idiots back away from their worst ideas ...... for the moment.

But in 2012, the incumbent with the worst economic, right track/wrong track, and approval/disapproval numbers of any president *who succeeded* in their re-election bid was re-elected. First one to lose electoral and popular vote numbers while being re-elected, as well.

So the same electorate that rose up in 2006 and 2010 - without a hint of "leadership" from "their" party - just couldn't bestir itself to throw out the histrionically disastrous, divisive Obama. And the tribal drone voters - though in fewer numbers than usual - were enough to re-elect him.

450 I started this with an observation that the GOP/GOPe *appeared* set to once again pass a fairly disastrous CR, with a WH having little choice but to go along - since that's the bind any WH is in, once they have accepted the New Normal of gigantic omnibus CRs, "must pass", without separate appropriations, largely without big votes of the kind that establish differentiation of the parties/candidates (the basic currency of actual politics) and without any practical veto options.

Inertia is the greatest force in the universe. In 2006 (the abortive amnesty crushed by grassroots fury), and 2016, enough people were aroused for various reasons to actually have an impact. Inertia was overcome.

We'll see in November if enough people remain serious about all this. If they recognize that one 2016/Trump anomaly is far from enough - we'll probably need FOUR OR FIVE OF THEM to actually move the needle.

Hoping for the best, but voter behavior does not inspire confidence. In MO, a while ago, enough voters decided that a candidate who said one stupid thing - but who would almost surely vote exactly how they wanted on issues affecting their lives and the whole country - was to be shunned, so that a corrupt hated incumbent who voted against everything they wanted could survive.

In AL, just recently, it proved beyond the ability of almost any GOP or "conservative" voters to vote strategically, to keep a GOP seat for less than 2 years until the next election, with a placeholder who was odd and unappealing - but again, who would almost surely vote 100% in line with their wishes on key issues, potentially even including *SCOTUS justice replacements*.

It's wonderful isn't it?

After 8 years of "community organizing" I am enjoying the reinvigoration of freedom .

I wasn't clear enough. The Left is still organized...in fact, more so. And they still have their Community Organizer leader.

The right is as disorganized as ever. We could not even stop illegal immigration. And we had Years. And that is just one area where we didn't revolt in force. Heck, it wouldn't matter if we weren't organized, as long as were effective. But we are not.

My analysis hints at only one conservative backlash needed. Can we hold what we have until the ever-shifting progressives totally beclown themselves? Now is the time to put out seed corn. The harvest is when the Left marginalizes itself.

We have reality, a working governance system, 30% of the population, 60% of the caring citizens, grandchildren as hostages to fortune, and Trump.

We shall see.

Are you including the GOPe in your "disorganized description"? The ones who make the CRs and the rest of the laws.

Because they are quite organized. They have a definite goal and it is not yours or President Trump's. They sided with the Left years ago.

They sat on their hands while the Tea Party and other organized right wingers were destroyed by Obama.

The left would be beaten and gone if it were not for DC "Republicans".

Posted by: Gruesome Jon at March 17, 2018 04:16 PM (tZC/B)

454 Ya know all those McSnoozer posts about Sessions? I kept wondering if people who posted them also were McSnoozers. As in not making any calls to their reps, or GOPe leadership. Or signing White House Petitions, or writing letters to Govt., or dozens of other things.

Some of us believed Sessions had his head down doing the grueling work of a Democratic Republic without fanfare or thanks.

Maybe us posters deserve the McSnoozer label way more than Sessions.

I think I coined Uni-Party, so of course.

But you also prove my point. They don't do our bidding bcz we are not in there fighting to make them do it. A Democratic Republic is not a passive affair.

A people get the government they deserve. The person who said that wasn't just talking about voting.

You have way more room to talk than I do. Your efforts dwarf mine.

The wild card are illegals though. If they don't swing elections, then their children will. And the long term goal of what the Left was trying to achieve is now within reach. And if the Republicans are not mobilized enough to vote, well, I don't see a bright future. Again, we had years to stop it, and how many of us made calls, and yelled at our Repub leaders. Not enough obviously. Years.

Most people need to be inspired and part of something to actually take action. That is human nature by and large. That is why you have more followers then leaders. And more stuff I'm in no mood to get into.

So yea, I think overall we are losing. Even with convictions. Bcz the media and Hollywood and airwaves and schools tell a different story. And if those people don't see pushback from elsewhere, they will go with the flow. It is human nature.

Again, Thank You NaCly Dog, for all you do.

The electorate is a nuisance on the left too. But so much of one...so overwhelming...their reps listen. Even if half of those complaining don't have jobs to give money.

Being a nuisance is the new way in this crazy world. That's how you get results. The Corporations proved that regarding gun control. I doubt they asked any of those callers or social media posters if they were customers. They just got overwhelmed with calls. Period.

Obviously, I didn't make my points well...at least with you. You can't be "organized" by anyone anyway. There are organizations people can join or not, so that was a weird thing to say. You can self-actualize on your own, but most people are social and do better in groups with common goals.

Glad you can be happy and let's hope you are right. Let's hope all those illegals don't swing elections, and our GOPe suddenly reflect the people's will, and the massive forces on the left aren't effective. As most on the Right do nothing different. I think it's a fool's paradise. But hey, at least it is Paradise. A lot of my close friends live there as well. So I will join and stop being miserable. You have convinced me to detach. Why should you have all the fun.

Take the weekend off and enjoy a green beer. Yesterday was a victory, albeit a small one, for America.

But now I've been convinced to detach and believe things can be made fine even without the GOP voting electorate doing anything differently. So I need to work on that...that detachment. And no more of these pesky posts of mine challenging the status quo. Which will make everyone happy.

I was responding to what you said above.

We, the people, are not even a little bit organized.

You made the organization of the disorganized sound desirable. I don't think that it is.

I don't want to be organized. Freedom is chaotic. I'm good with that.

The community organizers are taking hits on multiple fronts. They got used to having their way under Obama. They are panicked by this new concept of "losing".

474 You made the organization of the disorganized sound desirable. I don't think that it is.

I don't see them as mutually exclusive.

Organization takes many forms. It can be as simple as a phone tree to mobilize people to make calls. Or a broadcast e-mail. I would be a lot more inspired to make calls if I knew humdreds or thousands of others were too. Bcz my piddly calls seem ridiculous at this point. The mass calls by the left to corporations being one such instance.

Nor would it hurt to have a way to make people aware of White House petitions. Which I still believe is what stopped Anti-fa in its tracks.

I'm not talking organizing with a mascot and meetings.

Just wanted to clear that up. Otherwise, if that is still too organized for you, I'll see it as an agree to disagree.

"But at some point, this has to be seen in the larger context," said McCabe, 49, who says he has voted for every Republican presidential nominee until he sat out the 2016 contest entirely.
