Ohio High School Student Suspended for Refusing to Take Part in Anti-Gun Walkout
A high school student in Hilliard, Ohio, didn't want to pick sides in the contentious gun debate surrounding Wednesday’s "National Walkout," so he stayed in class instead of joining the largely anti-gun protest or an alternative "study hall." Hilliard Davidson High School senior Jacob Shoemaker was then reportedly slapped with a suspension.

I mean, it's still bullshit, but the kid was given a choice of leaving for the protest or going to a separate room for a study hall and he didn't want to do either one. He was told that he couldn't stay in the classroom alone and he did anyway.
So it's not quite as clear cut as it seems.
That being said, why the hell was there a separate study hall? The kids who walked out should have been missing class, class shouldn't have been cancelled.

Even accepting, just for the moment, the school's rationale that they had to do *something*, the form of punishment they decide to go with is a suspension? Seriously? That stuff goes on your permanent record in some if not all states.
And they knew damn well that his stated reasons were that he didn't want to take sides in a divisive issue--which is, you know, the exact opposite of "being disruptive," the reason for which suspensions are usually given.
The school should be investigated by the state government, but since it's the state that gave us John Kasich, that obviously won't happen.

On Monday the agency implemented a new collective bargaining agreement with its employees, who are represented by the American Federation of Government Employees. The terms of the deal could strike a blow against the labor organization. Workers will no longer be automatically enrolled in the union and instead will have to opt into representation. Under the previous contract, workers had only one 48-hour window to opt out of paying union dues or fees. It will also eliminate perks previously given to union officers, including taxpayer-supported office space and supplies.
Opt in vs a narrow window to opt out of union membership -- That's yuge. And taking away the freebie paid union hours is a nice touch. The union is yowling like a bunch of mewling quims.

I was a bit of a smart ass in High School. My homeroom teacher was also my football coach. He also happened to be a former Marine who had served in Vietnam. When I read somewhere that I didn't have to say the pledge of allegiance but could sit respectfully, I did. As I was leaving for class, he asked me to stay behind for a minute. He grabbed my arm and said "If you ever refuse to stand up and say the pledge of allegiance again I'll break both of your fucking arms" I was 6" taller and 40lbs heavier than him but I believed every word and always stood and said the pledge after that.

Good Times. I was in Georgetown the night they won. The place went wild. A buddy and I jumped into a bar just as they were barring the door - worried the floor would collapse. I mean, it's still bullshit, but the kid was given a choice of leaving for the protest or going to a separate room for a study hall and he didn't want to do either one. He was told that he couldn't stay in the classroom alone and he did anyway.
So it's not quite as clear cut as it seems.
That being said, why the hell was there a separate study hall? The kids who walked out should have been missing class, class shouldn't have been cancelled.

For purely selfish reasons, I have never been that crazy about homeschooling or things like that. Small towns like mine basically depend on our school to hold together at all, and I don't want to lose that sense of community. Plus, I knew more than a few families as a kid who gamed the system.
That said, I find public schools impossible to defend. They are devoted to indoctrination rather than education, and they do a crappy job of both.

I think there's a financial opportunity waiting for the right entrepreneur with a plan for franchised private academies with an emphasis on academic excellence.
In my experience there are not a lot of public school teachers that are that much smarter than their charges. No offense, good and competent teachers out there. I know you exist too but you're rare.

Can't some good programmers compile all the aggregated info already available on the net into a self-learning program that with regular testing would be equal to the grade standards?
In a better world I could see some kids ripping through 3 or more "grades" worth of education in one calendar year.
All from home.
And for extra credit, could choose various grade-specific courses.
We're paying on average over 10k per student per year nationwide for abject failure, augmented by political indroctrination.
There's got to be a better way.

I know for a fact that I was smarter than my American History teacher in High School. She admitted that I got more answers right on a test that SHE MADE. And then we had a academic team match for fun one week between the team and several teachers, including her. She whiffed on an amendment question and said "that's not right."

Another aspect that's equally important is that the choice provided was either to go outside for the protest while skipping class and getting positive media attention or go to detention and do homework.

Probably because most of them are cynical enough to recognize a staged show that these protests are. Yep. Kids got the teachers by the balls. "stranger danger!" is another one they use on you if you are not their teacher and you're supervising a lunchroom or school yard and you approach them to address some behavior problem. It would get national attention, and the left would use it to trash Trump for honoring a disobedient kid.
But 75% of the nation would be angry that teachers were forcing a political protest, instead of teaching. And unless Trump does it, few will hear about it.
Trump (or hiw tweet artists) could follow up with "what's wrong in schools" ... and how teacher unions gladly punish kids for the sake of teacher benefits ... since teacher's fund the union/mafia.

I was watching Archer episodes on the way back from Vegas, and one of them had Archer asking if Lana had totally ruled out public school for their 2 year old.
Her reply was "why not just leave her by a dumpster? Then at least someone might take pity on her and adopt her so that she could go to a good school."
