Ohio High School Student Suspended for Refusing to Take Part in Anti-Gun Walkout

So now our teachers and administrators are not just leading our children on political crusades, but punishing them if they refuse to join in.

A high school student in Hilliard, Ohio, didn't want to pick sides in the contentious gun debate surrounding Wednesday’s "National Walkout," so he stayed in class instead of joining the largely anti-gun protest or an alternative "study hall."

Hilliard Davidson High School senior Jacob Shoemaker was then reportedly slapped with a suspension.

6 There's a bit more to it than the headlines.

I mean, it's still bullshit, but the kid was given a choice of leaving for the protest or going to a separate room for a study hall and he didn't want to do either one. He was told that he couldn't stay in the classroom alone and he did anyway.

So it's not quite as clear cut as it seems.

That being said, why the hell was there a separate study hall? The kids who walked out should have been missing class, class shouldn't have been cancelled.

F*** that noise.

Even accepting, just for the moment, the school's rationale that they had to do *something*, the form of punishment they decide to go with is a suspension? Seriously? That stuff goes on your permanent record in some if not all states.

And they knew damn well that his stated reasons were that he didn't want to take sides in a divisive issue--which is, you know, the exact opposite of "being disruptive," the reason for which suspensions are usually given.

The school should be investigated by the state government, but since it's the state that gave us John Kasich, that obviously won't happen.

71 He has a right to the public instruction he is actually compelled by law to be present to receive. The school should have provided and instructor. Going to a special study hall designed to accomodate the rally is an alteration in routine by the school to accomodate the "protest." Well, his protest is that the school should not deliberately involve the instructional day in political demonstration, and take sides as it did, or require him to take a side.

But some protests are accommodated and others are not.

I suspect the teachers were out a'protestin' too; paid to advocate a political position doncha know.

JJ's most excellent Morning Report has a good news link to a coming change in DoE's union contract via Free Bacon:

https://preview.tinyurl.com/y8qnu4ry

On Monday the agency implemented a new collective bargaining agreement with its employees, who are represented by the American Federation of Government Employees. The terms of the deal could strike a blow against the labor organization. Workers will no longer be automatically enrolled in the union and instead will have to opt into representation. Under the previous contract, workers had only one 48-hour window to opt out of paying union dues or fees. It will also eliminate perks previously given to union officers, including taxpayer-supported office space and supplies.

Opt in vs a narrow window to opt out of union membership -- That's yuge. And taking away the freebie paid union hours is a nice touch. The union is yowling like a bunch of mewling quims.

Can't some good programmers compile all the aggregated info already available on the net into a self-learning program that with regular testing would be equal to the grade standards?

In a better world I could see some kids ripping through 3 or more "grades" worth of education in one calendar year.

171 Every single field of endeavor since 1980 has not only seen big savings on dollars and man hours but exponentially increased results with the use of technology.....except education.

Education has seen huge increases in dollars and man hours with little to no gain. Many instances we pay more and get less, far less in education.

173 the kid was the only real protester ... he got suspended and made news, which revealed teachers were shutting down class to run the kids through a Dem anti-government anti-gun protest.

sure he could have gone to study hall, which is itself a punishment to those that would not participate in the "protest". Cuz the choice was sit in this room quietly, or go outside to watch the activities. Most kids probably went along for the ride, so were used as props for the propaganda.

Because the choice presented necessarily forced him to choose a side and he wished to remain neutral on the political question. Admirable position.

Another aspect that's equally important is that the choice provided was either to go outside for the protest while skipping class and getting positive media attention or go to detention and do homework.

Something like that will happen. Within the next year or three we'll read a story about a teacher making her class do a same-sex kissing and hugging exercise. Or something along those lines. The children who go along with it but are demonstrably uncomfortable with it will be shamed. Fitbits on all of them, reading their vital signs for physiological changes indicating discomfort or anxiety could also be used to identify those to be shamed. Students who refuse outright will be suspended.

Probably because most of them are cynical enough to recognize a staged show that these protests are. They are trying to create a movement, not representative of a movement, and because it is staged when the pressure from the organized groups goes to support the latest and greatest socio-political pressure point, this will collapse and go away.

Speaking of socio-political pressure points, has anyone seen BLM recently? They kind of faded out of sight when the Pink Pussy hats started parading around. Come to think of it, the Pink Pussy hats seem to have dropped away now that Students Totally Against Boom Sticks has all the attention. I wonder what brand new shiny thing will distract from this one? I mean it has been a month and all.

We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have
statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it
at the end of the week.

332 Welcome to 21st century America

Where the student protests consist of the students staying in classrooms

Where the totalitarians are the ones who want to leave everyone alone

Where the anti abortionists are the ones who hate children

Where the lovers of peace kick your teeth in

Where the lovers of tolerance tell you to die

Where those who want to feed the hungry oppose pesticides

Where those who want to cure the sick think the scientific method is sexist

333 "Why play games?"

It's not a game in my opinion. It's giving less time over the weekend for the dims to make shit about it.

It's just a document dump waiting to be announced.

Plus I will call attention to the word if in my original post. Pure speculation on my part which I already described as less than useful.

Yep. Kids got the teachers by the balls. "stranger danger!" is another one they use on you if you are not their teacher and you're supervising a lunchroom or school yard and you approach them to address some behavior problem. They just run off. Got that from the police safety classes they went to. Yay.

Something like that will happen. Within the next year or three we'll read a story about a teacher making her class do a same-sex kissing and hugging exercise. Or something along those lines.
----------

Hasn't that already happened?
Posted by: buzzion at March 16, 2018 02:50 PM

I wouldn't be surprised.

I actually had fleshed out that little scenario for a failed dystopian novel I was trying to write. But yeah, maybe it's already happened IRL.

IIRC, Tom Wolfe said it was becoming harder to write satire because by the time you publish, those satirical scenes had already become reality.

352 "Trump should invite this student to the White House and heap praise on him. "

eggcellent idea.

It would get national attention, and the left would use it to trash Trump for honoring a disobedient kid.

But 75% of the nation would be angry that teachers were forcing a political protest, instead of teaching. And unless Trump does it, few will hear about it.

Trump (or hiw tweet artists) could follow up with "what's wrong in schools" ... and how teacher unions gladly punish kids for the sake of teacher benefits ... since teacher's fund the union/mafia.

354 Conservative parents and students need to start embracing the tactics of the left, such as sit ins and takeovers a la Evergreen State College, and no-platforming of left wingers. If the left is going to use taxpayer money to advance their agenda, conservatives need to fight fire with fire. Or as Col. Schlichter might say, the left must be made to live by their own rules.

I was watching Archer episodes on the way back from Vegas, and one of them had Archer asking if Lana had totally ruled out public school for their 2 year old.
