Mattis' Pentagon Goes Rogue, Backs Iran Deal, Opposes Trump

As some people I know complain: It's amazing how a couple of cute nick-names ("Mad Dog," "Warrior Monk") and some memes will insulate someone against a realistic assessment of their agenda.

So here's the Mad Dog in action.

On the heels of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's firing, due to his defiance of President Trump in support of the Iran nuclear deal, rogue Pentagon officials under Secretary of Defense James Mattis are waging their own campaign to keep the deal with the terrorist regime in Tehran.

In amazing testimony before the Senate, Gen. Joseph Votel, who serves as the leader of U.S. Central Command, told stunned senators that he, Defense Secretary Mattis, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Joe Dunford all support the nuclear deal.

"From my perspective, the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] addresses one of the principal threats that we deal with from Iran," Votel said, adding, "So, if the JCPOA goes away, then we will have to have another way to deal with the nuclear weapons program."

So far, they actually seem to be abiding by its terms. We never should have struck the deal, but having done it, there's a case to be made we're better off sticking to it than junking it. You want to fire Mattis, Votel and Dunford for believing that?

Tough crowd. Tillerson seems to have actually been working on behind-the-scenes diplomacy to shore up the deal, against his boss' intent. That's a good reason for him to go. But holding an opinion and stating it when asked?

Mattis was pushed out by Obama for being too tough on Iran, by the way.

the leader of U.S. Central Command, told stunned senators that he,
Defense Secretary Mattis, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Joe Dunford all
support the nuclear deal . . . ." merely indicates dissension, a healthy thing when it comes to forming and carrying out military policy.

If everyone just went along, nodding their heads, as under obama, I would be more worried.

Now if they fail to carry out lawful orders or are working to undermine the administration, that is a different story that I don't see here, yet.

It is a very fine line.

Sounds like just more fodder for an administration in chaos narrative that we should cautiously observe.

100 Yeah, that self-inspection and -verification aspect of the Iran nuclear deal is a big selling point to the strategic geniuses at the Pentagon.

With the deal in place, there is no danger of Iran ever crossing a red-line that would force a response since the Iranians themselves are the de facto monitors of their own compliance.

Posted by: troyriser at March 15, 2018 12:50 PM (K8f5g)

101 The biggest red flag is the one we should have paid attention to the most: Bill Kristol wanted Gen. Mattis to run as a 3rd party candidate in 2016. Instead he got McMuffin instead.

I've worked with a lot of people from India who are like this even outside a bureaucracy. Every time something went badly, even as simple as an offhanded comment about project status that ended up causing problems, they would want a meeting where we would come up with a guideline and a process.

If he is doing things to undermine policy, that's one thing. It's very unclear to me whether he is or not.

It feels like an analogy could be: Mattis says that people who teach evolution in schools should be jailed. Since he has no authority of education policy, it's annoying to hear from him, but doesn't actually affect how he does his actual job.

I'm not sure. It would depend on if the DoD actually has a hand in the Iran Deal and whether the Department is making actual moves that fall out of alignment with the POTUS's wishes.

There's "permissive, institutional civil disobedience," which is a lot more influential than it sounds. At the mid-management level, collection may be de-emphasized; targeting resources redirected to other AORs; people come to realize that designated nation A is no longer "the 'it' target," and analysis on it dries up or goes stale. If this is happening, Iran becomes perceived as tolerable by benign neglect, and senior leadership has as its excuse that "it doesn't appear to be as high a NIPF priority as it once was..."

Or so someone once said.

2. the power of all the big corporations around the world who want to do business with Iran.

3. the usual political game of kicking the can down the road for someone else to deal with.

4. Establishment opposition to anything Trump wants, and absolute terror that he will be proved right and succeed at getting a much better deal with Iran than Obama got.

5. The foolish belief that a powerful nuclearized Iran will unit the Middle East or at least keep it under control.

6. Bribes.

Correction meant "1939-40". But seriously what idiot military plan has American companies sell technology to a enemy. The Iran deals is more than missiles and nukes. It is about opening Iran up for trade. It worked out great in China /s, so now lets do the same for Iran.

Too many generals have eyes on lucrative consulting jobs with American companies after they retire. Not saying it is the case here, but many have it is concerning.

274 So, wait- we're demanding the Generals go rogue against a sitting President now?

The US remains party to the Iran agreement. We've decertified their compliance, meaning they're not upholding their end of the deal. Meanwhile, we remain in the deal through sanctions waiver. And Trump just re-wavied sanctions barely a month ago.

The policy of the Trump administration is that the deal is unacceptable. The President charged Tillerson with getting Europe in for negotiating something better. He failed. He was fired.

Mattis, Votel, and the DoD are all reiterating the government's current policy- a policy of which the President has had repeated opportunities to back away from, and still hasn't. Further, they are preparing for the alternate option.

Do you expect them to come before Congress and instead say that their policy is that we're going to bomb the shit out of Tehran with the President still having his toes in the deal's water?

You want to hit Iran, fine. Get the President to get off the shitter with regards to the deal, change our stated policy, and get a plan authored to do it within his Constitutional and statutory powers, or get Congress to declare war. Then you'll hear what you want.

But somebody has to do something first. Helps to actually bitch at the right individual, rather than blaming anyone else.

They're listening to these things and trying to formulate their own approach. They know President Trump's public statements. But these statements no doubt seem confusing to them as they do to us.

Maybe that's the point.

Short term our interests are in keeping the Mullahs off balance, unsure, unfocused.

Mattis is a patriot and that I'm sure of. That alone is enough to lead me to believe that there are things going on here that can't be processed without more information.

"California has its first illegal alien in state office, after Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) appointed Lizbeth Mateo to the California Student Opportunity and Access Program Project Grant Advisory Committee.
Mateo, an attorney, was born in Mexico and came to the U.S. illegally at the age of 14 with her parents, who are also illegal aliens"

353 Caution: military leaders cannot jump from supporting one policy direction to another because they think the new boss likes it. They have to support the strategy they have been given to work within, and unfortunately Trump has not given them a different one to fall in line behind yet. Yes, that is mostly because Rexxon and others have canoljoled him into a wait-and-see on the Iran deal. I think the waiting just ended.

Another thing bothersome here: who is bringing military men in front of Congress and basically asking them whether they support the directions of their immediate commander, or the Commander in Chief? Whoever did this put those military people in an impossible position, and they did it to embarrass Trump.
I think Mattis has to go, and the CiC has to lay down the Law on who can brief Congress and what they can answer to. It does not matter whether they support one policy or another, the questions asked of them should be confined to fact and data.

358 I get why the military would support the deal. America has already done all the things we were supposed to do under the agreement, so we have no remaining obligations, while the Iranians have continuing obligations. Even though the deal is a terrible deal, with huge open pathways to cheating, the military probably figures "what the hell...why not?!", given that something is better than nothing. They will likely express the same judgement about the next deal, should Trump succeed in getting a different and better deal.

That's right, ol' Taterhead was quite the defender of Harvey, wasn't he? I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that he was asked to demonstrate his acting ability by playing a ficus role when he was first starting out, either.

As I recall, the younger Affleck was implicated already, hence their previous circling of the wagons.

I doubt any more revelations will be followed up on anytime soon though. Hollywood probably considers themselves to already be done cleaning house.

413 To quote the mini-series "Generation Kill": Jesus, the business end of Mattis' crack pipe must be hot to the touch.

414 328 I don't want us to hit anybody. My son's a young infantry NCO and the very last thing I want is for him to pull another combat tour.

And that's the reason making war in the United States is supppsed to be so difficult, and require effectively 2/3rds agreement in the government to do so. Politicians don't pay the costs. Pundits don't pay the costs. Generals don't even pay the costs.

Kids do.

Votel respected that fact. He doesn't set policy, nor does the DoD.
They're instruments of it, to rip off the Cruise film. We should all, deep down- and even though we know they're just a bunch of opportunistic bureaucratic shits, hope the State Department's bullshit "deal" is enough. We know it's not, but we should play out that string until there's no other choice, and we can let the DoD function unrestricted- telling diplomatic fools on both sides of the Atlantic "we tried it your way" with all earnestness.

It's really easy for some here to say Mattis or McMaster have a soft spot for Muslims; you'd have to be an imbecile to think that given their CVs, but stupid happens. They've both shown themselves particularly skillful at killing and the direction thereof. That they don't look to it being the first, last, and only option shows they know where the cost is.

Back that play. Mattis' people tore ISIS to shreds in a calendar quarter. They'll do what it takes if it comes to that. Don't confuse their respecting the process of our Republic or diplomacy with weakness- you won't find better to resolve the endgame if it comes to that.

Posted by: Fringe at March 15, 2018 02:28 PM (yyhsJ)

415 How about the benefit of the doubt for someone like Mattis for a day or so until everything comes out? I'm certainly not up for another bullshit shooting war that means nothing in the ME. Time we quick fucking around in that neck of the woods. We're more of a threat to them than the other way around.

Appeasement is such an amazing philosophy. We risk nothing at all by doing nothing!

I'm sure those state dept diplomats who sit in their cars and cry are all up to the task of keeping Iran from building nukes.
