Lamb Victory Shows Democrats In a "Commanding Position" to Take House in 2018

Seems true -- it's not just bad luck that Republicans keep losing these off-year contests.

The Democrats are unified and energized, and Republicans are bitterly divided, with one faction actively assisting the Democrats.

Suburban women in particular are anti-Trump -- which is a major problem. The GOP once depended on at least splitting suburban women with Democrats to keep Democrats from winning women as a whole something better than 80-20.

Not only does the GOP's agenda traditionally appeal more to men, and less to women, but I think Trump is a big problem for women who consider themselves upscale and college-educated, too. (Consider themselves.) If Hillary Clinton reminded men of their first ex-wife, then Trump tends to remind women of their first ex-husband.

11 I've heard more encouraging assessments but I think there are quite a few "never Trumpers" who voted against Hillary who just aren't smart enough to vote AGAINST DEMOCRATS because that's STILL the anti-Hillary vote. Their principles get in the way.

It's infuriating that liberals are effortlessly lockstep and conservatives are just all over the place. The grip on culture that these relentless facists have is so strong.

19 No, I'm not exactly buying this. For one, in the PA election the D dissimulated himself as a moderate and took some of Trump's positions. Is the democrat party otherwise "moderate"? I think Republicans will lose some seats because this is what usually happens and they're basically pathetic. But I don't see a blowout.

22 I mentioned this before. I don't know if a Blue Wave is actually coming, but it'd be nice if the Republican Party at least acted like it was a possibility rather than just going on business as usual. The Dems are playing to win by putting effort into each of these contests while the
GOPe is just going through the motions.

Posted by: Joe, living mobile at March 15, 2018 01:55 PM (mk7Bj)

23 Typical of the GOP to throw away any chance at real victory. The party establishment prefers to be a permanent minority and at best play the game like the Tories do in England, offering a slightly less left wing agenda. Makes for easier times at the cocktail circuit.

I figure that if the left does gain the commanding heights of the political world again, they'll do what they wanted to do with Hillary, and truly put an end to anything that resembles classical conservatism.

I'm motivated, but I don't matter.

While the Dems don't deserve to win, the GOP deserves to lose. Apart from Gorsuch and tax cuts (barely passed) they've spent more time opposing Trump than crafting a legislative agenda that congressmen can run on.

What the hell is wrong with them? What I usually hear is the phrase coined by Perot supporters, 'Vote Your Conscience!'. When confronted, they still say that.

That ended well, didn't it? Hello eight years of President Clinton.

The problem, which they can not seem to (or refuse to) digest, is that the election isn't about their conscience , it is about WHO is going to be elected.

88 The problem is there are too many Never Trumpers at the local level. While Trump can drain the swamp, he can't neutralize the Never Trumpers out in the Congressional districts.

Because of them, Trump has no coat tails for the candidates.

Here in New York, we have leftover Republicans from Gov. Pataki who can't stand Trump and it shows. They have no shot at winning any Congressional seats (looking at you John Faso) or the governor, AG or comptroller.

Also after looking at this seat a few days ago I noticed that it has traded Republican vs Democrat on and off since 1971. So it has never been this so-called 'safe' Republican seat. Trump won the white woman vote - 52% to whatever the losers got.

He also won the college educated vote.

These special elections are not drawing the same Trump voters that the presidential election did. So many first timers came out to vote for him, and they don't understand how important these special elections can be in a climate when the opposition to the POTUS you love is hellbent on impeaching him.

My BF is one of those first timers. If our district had a special election, though, I would drag him to the polls.

But in some special elections, they've been able to focus money and message.

A number of things can change things in favor of GOP. The first and most important is appointing a Special Prosecutor to investigate FISA Abuse within the DOJ/FBI. Appointing a SP means that a Dem House can't impede an investigation where all the suspects are Dems. Basically, Obama/Hillary's insurance policy in reverse.

A reminder. If the map the PA Supremes drafted upon direction by those who pay for their campaigns, I mean, out of the good of their hearts, holds up, then PA-18 is no more in something like two months.

Lamb was drawn out of the district he just won. There is no way, none, that was a mistake. PA Dem politics is a complete viper pit and Lamb appears to have made some powerful enemies.

That being said, the GOP has shown no reason why it deserves to hold onto the House.

Also, and maybe I am wrong about this, but I thought the only special elections the Dems won were Alabama, won by dint of utter dirty tricks and the cravenness of most of the GOP, and now this where Lamb ran as a traditional Democrat by which I mean a moderate Republican.

Am I missing some? I will admit, I haven't paid attention. Also I'm talking Federal level positions, not state wide.

With the current crop of Republican congressmen that is the definition of conservative and we do, indeed, have bigger problems than the 2018 election.

Trump's first two years, in terms of big policy moves, will resemble Obama's in that he will have achieved only one significant thing. Following the flipping of the House and, possibly, Senate, he will be relegated to running rear guard actions on everything else that requires Congress to pass something. Wouldn't be surprised to see him have to veto a lot of stuff too. If that's the case maybe he bails after one term.

Yea, no shit. Incumbents tend to win a lot.

And by universal acclaim Saccone was a bad, lackluster candidate and Lamb a very good one who ran like a Republican. 327 286 263 Mueller Subpoenas Trump Organization, Demanding Documents About Russia

WASHINGTON -- The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, has subpoenaed the Trump Organization to turn over documents, including some related to Russia, according to two people briefed on the matter. It is the first known instance of the special counsel demanding documents directly related to President Trump's businesses, bringing the investigation closer to the president.

We need to recruit better candidates who run with Trump instead of against him, get them better coaching, and to somehow convince the GOPe that it is better to win than lose. They are such natural losers. Guess that's easier than actually winning and setting a positive agenda for the country. The Dems want to win and rule...the Repubs seem to just want to get along and collect the checks from their corporate cronies. That doesn't inspire voters. Sad!

376 Keep in mind that during this special election, the new redistricting was no even in effect. But, it will be in November. Lamb's new district will add a few republican voting areas, but all he has to do is legislate from a "moderate" position for a few months and he'll win hands down. Saccone, on the other hand, and you heard it here first, will run again in the newly drawn 18th district even though he won't even be living in it (which is allowed). That new 18th added a mess of heavy blue areas. He hasn't a prayer, and the GOP will let him run anyway.

This will play out all over the state, because long standing Republican districts now have big fat pieces of urban areas attached to them.

Bloodbath...absolute bloodbath come November....and not just PA. It will be happening in NC..upstate NY, the last conservative area of Connecticut. Simply put, the impeachment hearings start within 30 days of the midterms.

401 Perhaps you think Republicans don't deserve to hold Congress. Are you aware of what the Democrat base is like? I don't want to hand over this president to a party that has a base that has literally threatened his life. Some people have already given up on doing anything to help the Republicans. I'm as aware of the record as the next person, but the House holds the power of the purse. Try getting the wall when Pelosi/an extreme leftist is speaker. Democrats have promised impeachment, and with a split legislature, conviction is possible if the Republicans don't have enough of a majority. Let's not look at a few issues and forget the big picture. Let's not rationalize sitting at home commenting on the Internet and treating things like normal when we are one or two elections from losing our rights.

402 Mueller could wait until after the election to bring charges since Democrats are forecasted to win the House and impeachment would be guaranteed. If you don't vote for Republicans and don't take this campaign seriously, you are not hurting the Republican party. Congressional Republicans won't care either since they can be lobbyists. No, you are hurting the president you claim to love because you are throwing him to the wolves. I don't mean to be harsh, but we need to get out the vote and start messaging like the Democrats do. I appreciate this blog and love commenting on the Internet, but it doesn't get people to the polls. We need to stop being defeatist and look at the schedules in our states to see when primaries are. Waiting until the day of the primary is too late because the local people have already picked the candidates they want to win. We have to join the Republicans if we want our voices to be heard, and we need to stop rationalizing that things are not bad.

403 I love Trump and never thought of him as my ex husband! Lol
I'm pretty worn thin with all this National Review bullshit. Women I know are all about a Trump. Bill Kristol needs to jump....

405 The fact that suburban women are anti-Trump proves only one thing: they are stupid.
