Irishman's First Drink With His Son

While reading an article last night about fathers and sons, memories came flooding back to the time I took me son out for his first pint. Off we went to our local pub only two blocks from the cottage. I got him a Guinness. He didn't like it, so I drank it.

Then I got him a Kilkenny's, he didn't like that either, so I drank it.

Finally, I thought he might like some Harp Lager? He didn't. I drank it.

I thought maybe he'd like whiskey better than beer so I tried a Tullamore Dew. Nope!

In desperation, I had him try that rare Redbreast, Ireland's finest. He wouldn't even smell it.

What could I do but drink it?

By the time I realized he just didn't like to drink, I was so freakin' shit-faced I could hardly push his stroller back home!

Everything you wanted to know about St. Patrick's Day. Well almost everything.

No Lucky Charms for this kick-butt 'Ette.

While Mary, Queen of Scots succumbed to Queen Elizabeth I — and the executioner’s axe — there was another queen who defied the English monarch for almost 40 years by plundering English ships and fiercely repelling the forces that tried to take her family’s land.

This rebellious plunderer shared many traits with Elizabeth. They were both about the same age, had defied odds and thrived in a man’s world, had the allegiance of their male subjects, and were used to winning.

But while Elizabeth ruled England, the other queen ruled a considerably smaller sea-faring clan. She was the Irish pirate queen, Grace O’Malley.

I have a live DVD recorded in a club in Belfast, I think, very gritty scene in 1974 (or so). It even delves into the politics a bit, noting that there would be no trouble from the kids that night, because this was Rory.

210 Robert Fisk (yeah, I know) also couldn't find documentation of U-boats refueling in Eire during 'the Emergency' -
tinyurl.com/y7jypthl

The Brits were on the lookout for any Irish who might have been doing that, and there were many Irish who would have done that... but the Irish government at the time wasn't that stupid.

De Valera and his boys, being not total idiots, knew that they were no match for the UK if the UK felt the need to reconquer the island and level all their ports. So they didn't give the UK that excuse.

Also the U-boats had this nasty habit of sinking Irish ships:
dubm.de/en/u-boats-and-eire/

That didn't endear the Axis to the Irish at large.

274 You are correct, they did not allow U-boats into Irish ports.

But de Valera sent condolences to Germany upon Hitler's death, so....

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 17, 2018 10:44 PM (wYseH)

Had they allowed German U-boats to make port in Ireland, they would have no longer been neutral, and a legitimate target for a British invasion. Now if they allowed a battle-damaged U-boat to make port, and then interned the vessel and its crew, that would not be a neutrality violation.

It shocks me that they didn't immediately close the bridge at the first sign of problems. Maybe noone on site had the authority or wanted to make the call or something. The loss of life seems to have been entirely preventable. Tragic.

- In full view of the police officer:

1) Exit your car
2) Throw your keys down the street
3) Immediately drink a pint of liquor

Now you are:
- legally drunk
- not driving
- not in your car
- not in possession of car keys
- and unable to prove if you were drunk 10 minutes ago when driving

Petrel's photos keep blowing me away of the wreck site. A splinter shield for some 20mm Oerlikons has had the gray paint burned away to show men's names written underneath. The big CXAM radar antenna laying on the ocean's floor looking intact. A simple toolbox standing on end. The bow fragment tilted on one side and still having wood covering the flight deck.

Then there are the photos posters are putting up. Not only all these crazy detail photos of the TBD but Lexington pictures I have never seen before. And pretty much identifying who flew the one Wildcat that has been discovered - Lt. Noel Gaylor, XO VF-2 who later became CINCPAC and passed away in 2011.

That disclaimer having been said, Me wife did an excellent job with corned beef. She strays from the usual in that she takes the meat out of the pot and finishes it in the oven with a glaze of dry mustard, clove and brown sugar. This while the cabbage, carrots, and red potatoes finish in the pot.
A real treat.
Combine that with Irish potables, such as Irish Manor (a Bailey's knockoff that is in my opinion better than the namesake and gone now), Jameson whiskey which is also gone now, Harp lager, Woodford Reserve (you didn't think I'd stop if the Irish ran out, did you?) and some good friends and family, and I'm happy.

And fucked up. But you probably surmised that.

Hmmm. Somewhat. Christ gives us the capacity to be saved. He opens the door, so to speak. It is up to us to walk through.

To say that no matter what you did your mere belief would be the key to salvation offers a moral and logical quandary.

Case 1: A truly evil man, who slaughters and tortures millions, but believes in Christ.

Case 2: a truly good man who does good all the days of his life, saves the lives of hundreds, but does not believe in Christ.

If God is Good, how does the one man pass through the gates of Heaven while the other man does not?

369 HOW TO AVOID DUI
IF YOU ARE PULLED OVER
BY THE POLICE

- In full view of the police officer:

1) Exit your car
2) Throw your keys down the street
3) Immediately drink a pint of liquor

Now you are:
- legally drunk
- not driving
- not in your car
- not in possession of car keys
- and unable to prove if you were drunk 10 minutes ago when driving

Sounds like a great way to get yourself shot...

Valid, and completely logical. However, but it opens the door to how God views us "Warts and all."

Dahmer is a good case because it includes my refutation: that for madness. Where is the dividing line between evil and insanity? To be truly evil, you must know that your actions are wrong, but do them anyway. If your mind is such a cobweb that you truly cannot see the evil of your actions, is it still evil- or merely madness?

382 Had a good day of construction destruction here at Casa de Peon. Tore all the asphalt shingles off the roof of the crappy-built little tool shed attached to the rear of the house. When I was about 4 rows away from being done the shingles, two friends came by and commenced the next step, lifting the roof deck (1/2" OSB, in this case). It all came down in about a half hour, and we trimmed some limbs off the big palo verde tree, too.

Now I can tear down, from inside the shed, the rafters, and some wall parts, and expose the gable end of the house, which is what I really need to be working on. Eventually, the shed will get a plain shed roof, hung off a 2X6 fastened to the top plate of the house wall, instead of the miniature peaked roof that was there up till now.

I fail to see an issue here.

Case 1: Anyone can repent for their sins, accept salvation, and be saved.

Case 2: Someone can do good deeds their whole life, but that does not counteract the fact they have still sinned. It's not a matter of earning a net positive contribution of good versus bad. Without Grace there can be no salvation.

Disagree. Christ's sacrifice removes that burden for us. It also would invalidate the idea of free will.

I have no business wading into theological discussions, but here I go.

No. Deeds alone cannot save you, if you believe Christian Dogma.

I am the Way, the Truth and the Light. No one comes to the Father but through me.

Also, Not by deeds alone is man saved, one must have faith.
Implied in that is the failure of most professed Christians, myself included, to be "fishers of men". For if we don't profess and spread the gospel of Christ, it is on us that others may be damned by their lack of knowledge of the Savior.
That's why some consider it the highest calling to become missionaries, to make sure they've done all they can to at least bring people to the river of Christ, even if they can't make them drink.

408 That's where we differ, Aetius, about Jesus Christ's spiritual death on the cross.

I've been taught he paid the penalty for every single sin ever committed, even the sins of the people who wouldn't believe in him.

original sin, then remains, but is overcome by the judicial imputation of Christ's perfect righteousness at the moment we believe in him as our Savior.

so we become "in Christ" instead of "in Adam."

our sins after salvation have consequences during our earthly life, but after death, a believer is in heaven regardless of his bad actions.

425 We can't save ourselves.

our free will is the reason we exist, the only thing we have in common with the angels, and the most important decision we make is the answer to the question what think ye of Christ?

no matter how many good deeds I do, I still can't come up with the perfect righteousness of God. That judicial imputation when I believe in Christ for salvation, the gift of grace that God is just in giving because of Christ's work, saves me. forever.

Completely valid- and many theological arguments come back to the angels dancing on the head of a pin.

Mostly my argument is about madness. About how the human mind works. People can convince themselves of any number of patently false things.

431 Lt. Samuel Adams, flying an SBD Dauntless off USS Yorktown spotted the last Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carrier Hiryu and radioed the information back. CV-5 being damaged and in danger of capsizing because of the repeated Japanese air attacks gave the information to Spruance and ceded tactical command.

Mustering up dive bombers from Enterprise, Hornet, and orphans from Yorktown, Spruance launched a late afternoon strike that succeeded in sinking Hiryu.

Lt. Adams did not return from a mission June 5th as his plane was shot down by the AA fire of the IJN destroyer Tanikaze[/i[ which managed to dodge the attack without suffering a single hit.

473 Good/bad day here. This afternoon, my granddaughter received recognition from the state art teachers association, along with a couple dozen other kids. But it was really nice to actually see her get the certificate rather than seeing pictures after the fact. I missed a whole lot of stuff when I had the bookstore because I was open on Saturdays, and they always have these things on Saturdays.

While I was in Lincoln, I tried calling a former customer who lives there, thinking that Himself and I were an hour early, and maybe we could grab a quick coffee. But his phone was disconnected. I had tried calling him Christmas day to wish him a Merry Christmas, but he didn't pick up. I just thought he was visiting family. When Himself and I got home this afternoon, I chased him down on the internet, wondering if he'd moved back to his home town. Nope. He'd passed away a few days before Christmas. I wish I'd known; I would have attended his funeral. I'm sad because he really was a great guy, one of those people who make owning a bookstore worthwhile. We'd talk for hours about a million different things. One of the great things about him was that he was a Democrat to the bone but we could talk politics without screaming.

No matter how earnest your doubts and questions, you can only go to a mere man for your answers. Those men will give you their answer with at least a little of their own biases and agendas attached to them.

510 serious or mock troll?

Posted by: Aetius451AD at March 18, 2018 01:09 AM (ycWCI)

511 "Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." -Matthew 22:35-40

Proselytizing to your neighbor out of love of them vs. fear for your soul is a false dichotomy. If we keep to the second commandment, then we should fear for our neighbor's soul as much as our own, and seek to help them save it.

The same is true, albeit to a lesser extent for the source though. Especially given how VA's are hyped up and get a ton of roles when they are popular, or how some of the successful stalwarts get major roles almost every season for decades.

I hope that's true. I would LOVE to see James Comey, Bruce and Nellie Ohr, Baker, Rybicki et all sent up for 10 to 20, federal time.

Would also like to have the collusion between Comey and Mueller investigated to the nth degree.

I sized and cut out the fabric for a shirt for my son, bought shirts for DH, bought new brassieres for, well, the girls, and cleaned the kitchen, the bathrooms, did laundry, bathed both dogs, swept out the garage and put away the groceries.

Time for a sit down, I think.

Oh, and I'm knitting a bunny for the boy for Easter.

If I get any more domesticated they will have to shoot a tv show of me in action. Or some such crap.

Oh, sweetie, you know how this works. You don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than your buddy.

And always carry a .22 when in bear country. It won't stop the bear, but if you shoot your buddy, the bear won't chase you.

Seriously, though, a guy got treed by a bear a couple of years ago and used his cell phone to call for help. Hilarious, so long as you weren't that guy. I guess he was stuck up there for the better part of two days. It took a while for the rangers to find him in the woods.

If outhouse leavings are sticking with you, you need a bigger hole and a decent air freshener.

Growing up, one of my aunt's had an outhouse -- for real. It was as nasty as any joke made about them. I learned real young to 'hold it in' until we got back to my other aunt's house, the one with indoor plumbing.

What was funny was my Mom saying she 'had to go visit Miss Jones'. I remember asking her who is Miss Jones and where does she live? The adults were amused.

721 AoSHQ Prayer List

No new prayer requests this week.

That's a Good Week.

The one continuing request remains:

ibguy- (3/7/18 ) My Baby Sister Joyce has an inoperable glioblastoma (brain tumor). Doing surprisingly well, physically, but this is a terminal illness. Would appreciate Horde prayers that she continue to do as well as possible physically and cognitively, and that HaShem helps her find a path toward healing.

ibguy emails me every week to keep Joyce in your prayers. His dedication and devotion to his Sister is prevalent, prominent and certain.

If someone would copy and paste this around Noon, Eastern? I'd be grateful.

Thank You,

-Your Friendly Neighborhood Slapweasel

I've only visited the Point twice in my life, 2000 and 2002, for the Army-Air Force games. 2002 was a visit and a half. On Air Force's squad was kicker Joey Ashcroft, nephew of Bush's Attorney General John Ashcroft, who attended that 2002 game. The security for that game was very visible and incredibly tight.

But I did get to stroll around and the campus is really lovely. It has spectacular views of the Hudson.

742 371 God knows sincerity, is the Christian answer. Jeffrey Dahmer professed Christ in public about two days before someone shanked him in prison.

Whether Christ forgets Dahmer's sins at the White Throne, is up to Christ. Although as a Christian I'd not personally pray to Saint Dahmer to intercede for my own sins
Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at March 18, 2018 12:05 AM (6FqZa)

Valid, and completely logical. However, but it opens the door to how God views us "Warts and all."

Dahmer is a good case because it includes my refutation: that for madness. Where is the dividing line between evil and insanity? To be truly evil, you must know that your actions are wrong, but do them anyway. If your mind is such a cobweb that you truly cannot see the evil of your actions, is it still evil- or merely madness?
