At least in my state, its a pretty open secret Democrats collude with Libertarians and help them get on the ballot in tight races to make the Republican lose.

They even send out Libertarian mailers to Republicans that have in the fine print "paid for by (insert Democrat candidate)"

Republicans should have Green Party representation in every race.

In a year where the LP could have nominated a potted plant, they nominate the single worst candidate they could have other than the guy who stripped on stage at their convention.

He does represent the LP's priorities, though. They love weed, and so does he.

318 283 I voted for Johnson, hoping that the LP would reach 5% nationally and they'd get the chance for federal funding, but in an election year where a shocking number of people hated both of the major party candidates, they couldn't manage that.

I said it at the time, but Johnson really was the worst of the top 4 in terms of representing the ideology of their own party and in terms of campaigning skills.

After a year of Trump, I wish I had voted for him instead of Johnson.

Two - engineering needs to be the priority here, not low-ball bids. Three - skilled labor is woefully lacking. Four - engineers need site-managers on their side and onboard with 'build to spec.'

That was due to the contractor substituting shorter lengths of threaded rod instead of a continuous rod as specified by the engineers.

Posted by: Jwest at March 15, 2018 03:18 PM (/roJx)

...

Hyatt, and mostly on point.

The contractor requested and was approved to use separate lengths of threaded rod instead of one long continuous one.

The outcome of that was that instead of each level being attached individually to the hanger, they were all hung from the level above by separate hangers. The member they used for the bridges were two channels welded toe-to-toe to form a box; the top level couldn't take the weight of all the levels below when the catwalks got loaded up with people.

186 deaths iirc. All on the structural engineer. It was a change in the detail but one that he was asked about multiple times and did not think through. Just said yes.

He sometimes goes and does lectures about it. I think it must be the only thing he can do to clear his conscience is be honest and try to get others to not repeat his mistake.

This is similar to the problem with the Citicorp building on east 53rd street in Manhattan - engineering-wise. It was a beautiful building that won all kinds of awards, mostly because it looked at many parts like it was just floating in the air (over the corners, which had no columns to the ground) ... until some grad student decided to do a paper on it and started looking into the design. He couldn't figure out how the building handled torsion stress so he asked the designer about it. The designer took a long look at it and was shocked to see that it couldn't! A 100 mph wind could twist the building and break it. Literally.

They quickly came up with a fix to add torsion support to the structure but before they could do the work a major Nor-Easter started barreling in and was set to hit New York with the fiercest winds in decades. The designer, and everyone, were shitting bricks.

In the end, they got lucky. The storm only sideswiped Manhattan and they were able to carry out the fixes right after but the team were on pins and needles for that event, actually worried that the whole building might well come down.
