Ms. Garland's wonderful voice aside, that movie creeped me the hell out. Had more than a few bad dreams as a kid, involving flying monkeys and the Wicked Witch. Even as a kid my sleep patterns trended toward insomnia, which is where the truly bizarre dreams come from.
Not for nothing was Margaret Hamilton's career overthrown by her playing the Wicked Witch of the West in that movie. She nailed the part and set a high bar for how frightening a truly wicked person could be.

That was enough .I sent off a harsh letter to the principle about my kids being used as props for a political movement that the school is organizing for. I explicitly forbid my kids to participate or be pressured in anyway. Sent copies to both kids homeroom teachers. One, who I suspect of being a closet conservative , already responded slightly apologetically.
Might be time to give up on this charter school and go private. The learning environment is far better than the public schools we fled a couple years ago but I'm finding out is is just as PC. So f***ing discouraging. I'm thinking of contacting State Board of Education which has oversight but I suspect they are fully on board with this idiocy.

I'll say this. I have a good friend in grad school who is very far left, and an activist to boot. Well, I don't know about good friend, but we're on friendly terms. I've helped her on some of her research, she's given me tips on the job market, we stay in touch on Facebook...that sort of thing. She knows where I stand politically and I know where she stands, but we've never gone after each other on that stuff. I think there's an unspoken agreement that neither of us wants to have that kind of dispute, so we just don't.
I think it can be done, but it requires an active commitment on both sides to not let the political stuff spill over into your personal relations. Which isn't easy, obviously.

That's what the Socialist government does - it usurps and supplants the institutions that would have otherwise taken care of the individuals who needed help.
Actually, if you read the story, the local pastors were explicitly telling the cops "YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS! Here is a list of girls who are being given drugs. Look into this!" And the cops did nothing.
The problem is that with this specific problem, your choices are either trust the authorities, or engage in vigilantism. And I'd be willing to be quite a lot of money that the gang involved in this had quite a lot of guns, while the local citizens had none.

If you look at the news coverage of women who try to hire hitmen, the problem is they aren't trying to hire hitmen, or even murderers. They talk to people who have a criminal background, but know the difference between being sentenced for burglary or even robbery, and being sentenced for first degree murder.
They're smart enough to not want to go to prison for the rest of their lives, so they rat out the person trying to hire them.

They're not even ruby color. I saw a show where they brought out the originals. When they made a pair that were actually ruby red the color just exploded on film, so they had to tame it down a bit with subdued shade of red that "looked" red on film. Was pretty interesting. They even showed the circular scratches on the soles from where she clicked her heals together.

I'm a hardcore lefty. I also live in Texas and have spent most of my career working for nonprofits. That means a lot of red-state right winging. Not the nice, necktie, Laffer-curve, "fiscal conservative, social liberal" guys either. Nice conservatives don't run charities. They're comfy where they are. You want to do good in Texas, you need full-on deplorables. You need the churches, the phone trees, the mailing lists. They're the boots, or at least the sensible shoes, on the ground, knocking on doors and passing out leaflets and stacking donations til 4 in the morning.
Let's be clear. Philosophically, these people were opposed to my... everything. Hellbound from the haircut down. Tabletop gaming! I had friends at one workplace who loved and collected board games. Me too! Chat went swimmingly until I showed them the dice my beloved sister gave me for Christmas and they told me D&D is a tool of Devil worship. Chilled the conversation somewhat.
But I'm a dope-ass grantwriter, so they put up with me. That by itself is a shot in the gut to "conservatives are bullies." I spent years in evangelical conservative settings and was never treated poorly, beyond the usual office nonsense. It's tempting to say "well, you were making them money," but I wasn't. They didn't get to keep the money I made. The money I made went to strangers in desperate straits, people of different faiths, backgrounds, colors than the evangelicals I worked with. Those evangelicals a) put in 80 hour weeks to help them; b) put up with a walking billboard for every value they didn't have because he could contribute.
Then I lost my job unexpectedly. That comes up in nonprofit work, alas. Budget's always a shoestring. Still, it sucked. Last day, I was packing up and the woman next to me asked if I was leaving. I said yes. She asked if she could pray for me. I said sure. Do what you like on your own time, right?
Then she took hold of my hands.
Friends, I was not expecting that. I came up Catholic. I am now a Christian pantheist. Laying on of hands? Not a thing in any of that. At all.
And she prayed. No smug. No pity. Not a word of condemnation. Tears in her eyes, because she was worried about me. Praying, because that's what she could do in that situation. She believed, so she stood with me and tried her best to help.
I've never forgotten that. Don't think I ever will. My beliefs weren't hers. My faith certainly isn't hers. There is every reason to suspect I will live out my span and die without ever experiencing another laying on of hands. But this person used the most powerful tool available to her to be profoundly kind to me, at a time when I really, really needed it.
That's not the act of a bully.
So there's that.

Eygpt, Arab Spring, was when I first became aware of it.
Syrian refugees were from a much more modern, cosmopolitan society, so I'm not sure that it was widespread there...or even accepted as a norm.
But look, you have the recent case in Britian of the teenage girl raped by 5 different men in one hour. They know bcz of CCTV. From the pics I saw, I don't think the guys were even together as a group.
Then there was the girl raped by a man, waved down a taxicab, and then he raped her. And these are only the stories that got my attention, and made the news.
There is so much more. So very much more. I just don't go
to those sites and read anymore.

With transplants you have to give the patients special drugs to prevent the immune system rejecting the organ, no? Imagine the risks that would create for a child growing in that uterus. The danger that the uterus would be rejected, the fact that the pregnant man's immune system is being hobbled and can't protect the baby from infection and would attack the baby otherwise. I suppose science could find a way around this... but you wonder if it's worth it.

This is how it works with my sister in law and myself. She made liberal comments to me twice. Once had to do with illegal aliens, the other was Pence being "overly religious". Anyway, both times I rebutted her. She doesn't bring this stuff up to me anymore. It's like a truce.
It's a good thing also. She's one of those liberals who's all tolerant and pro diversity and all, but wouldn't get caught dead living in a neighborhood with low income minorities. She also made sure her child attended a school that had almost no welfare people, and the same will be true for her grandchild. I know too many liberals who are like this and I'm not above pointing it out to them.
When it comes to where they live and where they send their children to school, they are no different from republicans.

Not for macular degeneration, AFAIK. It's irreversible. My Dad had it and his vision was mostly normal, but he had to give up driving because of it. You might be thinking about cataracts. Which my optometrist said that I'll have to have the procedure sooner rather than later.

I've never put out a hit on anyone, but I sometimes watch true crime tv.
Also, summers, when I was in college, I worked in a factory where they had convicts working alongside us on the assembly line. Most of the guys who worked there were in for burglary, drugs, or maybe robbery. There is a huge difference between the really violent criminals, like murderers and rapists, and the burglars.
If you read the news items about women hiring hitmen, they know of some guy who served some time. So they approach him to kill hubby. The guy doesn't want to touch that with a ten foot pole, so he runs to the police and reports it. Burglary is 2 to 10, first degree murder is life without parole. They're stupid, but not that stupid.

Obviously, the Captain is. From the Main Bridge, the glass-windowed enclosure b'neath the Flying Bridge, which is of course, un-occupied.
Smart Captain, manning the helm in Air Conditioned Comfort, and with ALL of the available tools of navigation at hand, and not just the abbreviated compliment of such which is available on the flying bridge.
Give you an idea about the size of that yacht. The first "big step" up the USCG Captain's Licensing scheme, is the "100 Ton Master" ticket.
That's not a big enough tonnage license for this particular yacht.
Another fun fact. Yachts like that are EASY to dock. You do it with a boat-shaped control on a joystick, and simply push or twist the "boat" in the desired direction(s), and the computer commands the bow and stern thrusters, as well as the main propellors...to gently nestle the boat up to the dock.
Makes it look like you really know what'cher doing there, too.
And it's the same system used by every major cruise ship afloat, now.
Which has really kicked the harbor tugboat industry right in the ol' tugs. Good thing that all kinds of tankers and freighters still depend on them, mostly being single screw hulls and all that.
All that said, just gimme a 52 ft. Irwin Ketch, and I'll be a happy sailor, indeed.

I was actually looking at that. Some of them start at $69 per day. Thing is, once I am up there, I can be done in 5 minutes or less. Drive about a dozen screws, all done.

I know several people that I can try to bum the use of an extension ladder from, starting with the next-door neighbor. I can put a wheel of my Suburban on the sidewalk, and brace the legs of the ladder against it. One of my big bugaboos about ladders is the legs kicking out while I am up high on them.

Werner 16' extension, fiberglass. The fiberglass ones are noticeably heavier than the aluminum ones, but they feel much sturdier to be on. Not that the aluminum ones would collapse, just that they don't stay in place as well as the heavier fiberglass ones. I like a ladder that will stay put even if I'm not on perfectly level terrain.

Thanks for all the laughs last night. I needed that. The procedures went well.
Bottom side layer was polyp free. Just some bleeding roids that need to be dealt with. The endoscopy was more surprising. I have a hyadel hernia. They also took out something for biopsy. No rearward procedures for 10 years so yea. Versid was the drug the gave me for sedation. 20 second after it was in my IV the walls started to move. Like if you stood in front of a backdrop in movie and ran in place. Couldn't talk to well until it wore off. My throat has a lump in now. I was gagging even though I was sedated. I'm glad its over. Again thanks.

I miss those old black and white westerns. Good guys vs. bad guys with the bad guys always losing. Now kids have the lesson of bad people winning, or at least not going to the hoosegow for their crimes. Sad. Any wonder why kids think the way they do? Today, as long as you're rich enough, or connected, or have the support of the fake news media, crime pays unlike that old chestnut I learned, 'crime never pays'.
It's the main reason why I know examples must be made of the political lawless in our present world: For the children. Rule of Law and equality under that Rule of Law is a necessity in a civil society. It sucks being a dinosaur and still believing that as too many current examples abound proving otherwise.
