Today in church I commented that I liked the hymn, "God hath spoken by the prophets" which has a very stirring melody and powerful words. For those that know old hymns it is the same tune as the hymn "Once to Every Man and Nation.....comes the moment to decide" After saying I liked the hymn, the 88 year old patriarch said, "I hate that hymn. Why can't be have hymns of the "great old time religion". I thought to myself, "Well, the tune is from 1890, the words from 1952. How old do you want the "old time religion "to be? but I didn't say that. He was happier with the two other selections, "Lift High the Cross" from 1916 and "Amazing Grace"-words from the 1700's and music from the 19th century. This dear man must die inside if I choose hymns with words from the 1970's or after. I guess I know what side he'll be on if we we ever have the church music wars. ;^)

This nonsense started with the Walkman. People quit thinking they had to deal with flesh-and-blood human beings and could go out in public completely closed off from human interaction. It got much worse with the advent of smart phones, where people "text" each other across a room rather than speak with one another.
I truly believe there is a segment of the population that cannot look another person in the eye and speak out loud, and then listen when the answer comes and determine the intent of the conversation by facial expressions.
People have become something beyond shy. They have become anti-social. Hence, the dating sites, where you don't even have to ask a single question until every aspect of the other person has been vetted.
And now apparently we are going to continue to separate people one from another by only dating those with whom you completely agree on every subject and topic.

But financial success makes a man more attractive to a woman. It's no sin to say so, and it's about 70% of the reason so many men try to get rich in the first place. To call that an awful thing is like complaining about the weather or curvature of the earth.
If this woman actually got invited to dinner (with any kind of clear romantic intention) by a rich powerful man, her biological wiring would so overload that she'd say yes in spite of herself. She might even hate herself for it, but she'd still say yes. When the alternative is sitting home alone, again, with her wine and cats, she's saying yes. And who in their right mind could blame her? Certainly not me.
To me it's pretty obvious she made the whole thing up. And her long, item by item mischaracterization of conservatives only backs up my thesis. She thinks this is what she would do if a rich powerful handsome man invited her to dinner. It's how she imagines he would present an offer and how she hopes she would react. But it isn't. It's just another politically motivated self-delusion.
They have this concept in China of the 'leftover' women. Women who are too bright and educated to be content with the men who are available to them for marriage. Once they reach age 28 or 29 and their fertility starts to decline, they become 'leftover'. And the available men move on to younger more appealing options.
I see this all the time in my neighborhood in Greenwich Village. Take a look at all the sad, lonely middle aged women sitting alone with their dogs in Washington Square Park on a spring evening, and you'll see it too. When a Feminist hit 40 in New York, the dating world shuts down for her, and what come after that is 40 years of solitude. No children, no husband, not even a tolerable boyfriend. It's truly tragic. It's the real cost of the feminist lie.
And this woman couldn't hold a candle to them in appearance. She's well below the mean for 40 year olds (and she looks older than that) So if she got a dinner invite from the man she describes, she'll feel like she hit the lottery, whatever her politics. She'd say yes just to take a ride in the Bentley and have a decent meal for free.
So don't believe her. She's lying. If she isn't, I'll eat my hat.

The Senate's failure to confirm appointees has reached crisis/scandal levels, really. Trump ought to raise the profile of this outrage, and name names, both parties, who are culpable - and not be shy about putting the onus on Mitch to do what's needed. Yes yes complicated business to run against much of your "own party", but there it is.

One of my biggest gripes is that it's hard to meet people unless you already have social circles that encourage you to meet people. Picking up a girl in a crowded bar or nightclub is awkward and difficult. Most people meet each other through work, friends, shared interests, etc. Those are going away. Heck, most of my friends over the years have been introverts as well, so they aren't any help in meeting women. And unfortunately my hobbies tend to be either focused towards men (blacksmithing, martial arts), or filled with 50-something professionals (dancing).
My general thoughts on why dating sucks.
1. Women have been told that they should not rush into marriage but spend their twenties "having fun" and "building your career."
2. Thus, a lot of young women are less picky about the men that they date when they are younger.
3. A subset of these women will hop from bed to bed, thus creating a downward pressure on the cost of sex. Every woman who dates now faces increased pressure to put out.
4. Social media and online dating have encouraged this through hook-up apps, and a mix of both fake intimacy and randomness. You see a person's hobbies, pictures of their life via instagram, etc, and it creates a false sense of connection. But you don't actually know them. I think this tends to make people pickier than they should be.
5. Young men are falling behind. The increased pressure to go to college, and the simultaneous attacks on masculinity and blue-collar work combine to leave a lot of young men adrift in the culture.
6. The results, from what I've observed, is a significant number of young women who stay with men who are not good candidates for marriage, some times for years, in the hope that they'll eventually grow up. They do this because they don't want to enter the meat market of the dating scene, and they don't want to admit in their early twenties that marriage is a priority.
7. By the time these women hit their thirties and realize that they need to cut sling load, they're starting to get desperate.
8. But the same time they have a distorted view of the dating scene and their own worth. I think a lot of these women adopt a perfectionist attitude.

The hook-up culture is a major problem for women, IMO.
The pressure to have sex with men you barely know, much less love, is overwhelming. And some just....can't.
I was watching an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond a while ago. It was a flashback to when the couple first started dating and Debra told Ray from the outset that there would be no sex for six months. It was a matter of establishing trust and personal affection FIRST.
Hah! Try finding a guy who would wait six weeks (or even dates) today!
I could go on forever explaining how this hurts women but I also think it hurts men. It seems to me that there is no longer any space between Yes-I'll-jump-into-bed-with-you-immediately and the infamous friend zone.
There is no room for just dating and seeing whether something develops.

It was the same in the Bay Area. In the 70s, young women spouted the "fish, bicycle" nonsense, and crapped all over guys because ... they were guys.
I was long gone, but it was reported to me that, fast forward 20 years, a lot of fish decided that they wouldn't mind a bicycle at all, thank you very much. But they were past their sell-by date, and men their age were pushing past them to chase 20 something instead, and these gals could no longer jerk guys around. They were yesterday's news.
My buddies who were still in the Bay Area had schadenboners from that.

We seemed pre-wired to worship something.
When people didn't have gods, they created them. Romans & Greeks did so. Then there are the golden idols, etc. and this was all taken very seriously. They sacrificed people to appease "the gods".
So, JMO, we seem born with it. And people make many other things their gods, without calling it that, e.g. money, sex, alcohol, ego, politics.

Anyone who is divorced, man or woman, who constantly trashes the former spouse is to be approached with great care.
Break-ups are rarely 100% the fault of one party.
Beyond that, it's a clear sign of not being able to live and learn, to move on.
And as you say, the bitterness will be projected on all men or women.

Definitely. It takes two to tango. Or to tangLE, for that matter.
Anyone who constantly talks about the ex is also strongly contraindicated. The person may just be on the rebound, and may get over it in time, but until and unless they do, their issues will overshadow any subsequent relationship.
Fortunately, my only experience with this concerns girlfriends, not wives, but the principle remains.

I have a very difficult time being around it. I have a positive view of men, and when I'm around women who are constantly complaining, it feels toxic to me. My sis is one, so i do listen b/c she's my sis, but I hate it. So uncomfortable.
I'm not talking about the funny things about men and women that are universal, those are great. I'm talking about those who are bitter and haven't dealt with that bitterness. It is eating them alive, and I don't want to catch their flesh-eating disease.

It's not just complaining, necessarily, but just living in the past. A publisher sent a sales rep to my office (trying to get me to adopt their textbook) who was utterly gorgeous, and I (being single at the time) was very interested.
We went out a few times, but she got whiplash whenever she saw a car resembling that her ex-boyfriend drove, and all too frequently talked about him. Not disparagingly, but ...
I got the picture. She was on the rebound, and still carrying the torch.
Exeunt Jay, stage left. This was going nowhere.

Oh definitely. But same-sex wise, I will listen to gfs who bemoan a lost love. It gets irritating, but it doesn't feel toxic.
I've never dated a guy on the rebound, always kept him in the friend zone, for the reasons you mentioned.

I wouldn't be so sure about the "rare" there. In my personal experience, and having listened to and observed many others in a variety of circumstances it's at least a supermajority percentage of responsibility on one party. Anecdotal, sure, but I've only once encountered a divorcing couple where there was mutuality. Mileage may vary.

I'll admit to being much more aggressive in my twenties, because I was young, in the Army, and looking for fun, not a relationship. But the one girl I was serious about was the one who made it clear that she wasn't going to have sex before marriage. And once she established the boundaries, I was fine with it. Most guys are.
