At the same time, British Law was dealing with the fact that the population was getting tired of execution being about the only punishment that got applied no matter what the crime was (the way things worked through most of the 1600's and 1700's) and they were also too cheap to spring for building and maintaining the kinds of prisons they would need if they put a stop to executing every paddy who nicked a side of beef.
So transporting the criminals to the other side of the world solved a number of problems, from the Governments point of view.

I can't say I know anything about the etiquette, but there are quite a few Chinese/Japanese meals that are served family style, so it makes sense that you wouldn't want people touching the end of their chopsticks and then going back into a shared plate/pot for another bite.

Many farms have converted to wells and sprinkler irrigation systems rather than rely on unpredictable amounts and rates of irrigation water provided by the irrigation districts. So much demand for wells sprung up that it could take months before a drilling crew is available to dig a well.
In response newspapers and environmental groups have been pushing hard for regulations on wells out of fears that farmers are going to deplete all of the aquifers.
They will of course get their way before long, being CA and all. I'm sure all those lawyers in SF will do just fine, but everyone else is bound to discover that "rooftop gardens" will not sustain your dietary needs.

Except, not in the parts of town where this would cause an undue financial hardship to their core constituencies.

Also learned first-hand to keep the bucks away (and I mean many, many yards away) from the milking does, as apparently horny does make for musky milk. What you feed them also affects the flavor. Ours were fed mostly alfalfa, and we would feed them a sweet molasses-based rolled grain mixture when milking them (to encourage them to come into the milking stanchion (we built this ourselves to keep their heads relatively secured while milking). The other thing we did is not give them a salt block to lick during the season they were to be milked, as it made the milk salty.
