Um, yes. Obviously.
After acknowledging that of course they trust most of the DOJ's personnel...Nevertheless, there are instances in which actual or potential conflict of interest exists or appears to exist, or there are matters in which the public good would be furthered, and an independent Special Counsel is warranted as the relevant Federal regulations provide. We believe that, in the case of certain decisions made and not made by the Department of Justice and FBI in 2016 and 2017, both an actual conflict of interest exists and separately, but equally significantly, the public interest requires the appointment of a Special Counsel. With respect to potential and actual conflicts of interests, decision made and not made by both the former and current Department of Justice and FBI officials have led to legitimate questions and concerns from the people we all serve. There is evidence of bias, trending towards animus, among those charged with investigating serious cases. There is evidence political opposition research was used in court filings. There is evidence this political opposition research was neither vetted before it was used nor fully revealed to the relevant tribunal. Questions have arisen with the FISA process and these questions and concerns threaten to impugn both public and congressional confidence in significant counterintelligence program processes and those charged with overseeing and implementing these counterintelligence processes. Because the decisions of both former and current Department of Justice and FBI officials are at issue, we do not believe the Department of Justice is capable of investigating and evaluating these fact patterns in a fashion likely to garner public confidence. In addition, while we have confidence in the Inspector General for the Department of Justice, the DOJ IG does not have the authority to investigate other governmental entities or former employees of the Department, the Bureau, or other agencies.If you can't question Clapper, Comey, Brennan, Yates, Rice and Powers all under subpoena and under penalty of perjury, then what is the fucking point?!

Salena Zito made the observation that you should take Trump seriously, but not literally. My take is that last week Trump established what he wanted to establish, that there were investigations going on with Comey and FISA, and he got a zing in at Sessions to bait the hook for the MSM to repeatedly say that.
Now Grassley and Goodlatte step in with their formal request for a second Special Counsel. And the OIG report is slated to be coming out this month (funny if that landed on the 9th or the 16th.) Is all of this coordinated? I would not be surprised if it is, Trump is both a methodical planner - real estate development sort of demands that - and he is a great marketer and showman. Pulling off this on the Deep State, the Clintons, and the Obamas would be daring and require great timing, and Trump does not lack for either.
How soon before people start yelling "Everyman for himself and the devil take the hindmost!" is something I do not know.

The only thing more problematic and dubiously constitutional than a special counsel is a special counsel with an effectively wide-open mandate. A de facto 2nd Department of Justice/Criminal Division.
But seriously, that's a great point. The last administration was clearly the most consequentially corrupt and criminal in our history (by orders of magnitude). A good, vigorous special counsel without limits would produce literally years of indictments, pleas, and delicious political impact.

They used official documents to talk to their underlings. The FBI IG/DOJ have access to that archive. Just go through 2yrs of email and see what Comey/etc said themselves. Why interview them, when they have it in black and white?

While I generally agree, these guys were so convinced Hillz would win they got lazy. For example, the Comey statement document with track changes identifying who reviewed it and how each one edited it. Also, the Strzok-Page texts. Tell me they don't have all kinds of texts like that by McCabe, et. al.
The other thing to consider is that the OiG Horowitz has been quietly watching and documenting a lot of these people for the last year - getting evidence near real time. At least that's what I hope he's been doing...

I know a lot of people like to act as if there is a master plan and that all of these people are following it with complete precision like a well-rehearsed commando raid or something, but a lot of it seems to be a general belief in a vague direction to go, ad hoc operations, emergency CYA, and cult of personality worship. Vague, tribal, home-town-team emotionalism rather than calculated, cold, Bond-villains.

Correct as I recall it; he diligently requested Reno expand his mandate which she did. I don't recall reading about any back and forth between Mueller and Rosenstein. Maybe it's happened but everything I've read has acted like Mueller is expanding this on his own.

The other side is a lying bunch of cheaters who have caused the deaths of their own countrymen. And they should be stopped. Stopped from ever having power. That's the goal.
The greatest harm Democrats under Obama did was to weaken our institutions. I'd ask that we strengthen those institutions by requiring them to abide by the rule of law. And sentencing people to long jail sentences would be a good start. And to do that we have to abide by the very legal standards we claim to want to return to regular order.
