The Establishment supported this, because obviously. I think for many people this was either the last straw or the next-to-last straw which is how you Got Trump. Now he'll be vacating the seat, and that seat will come open for election in 2018,I'm thinking, instead of 2020, when the seat would have been up for election, absent this resignation.

I learnt this when I was about ten years old playing dungeons * dragons with the younger brother. I was the DM and also had a character in this party, because I was ten years old and stupid. Inevitably his character died and mine didn't. So he left. I figured out immediately the game isn't fun when there's only one dude in it. So after that I was the DM; and muh bro ran all the characters, except for explicit NPCs. He did get TPKed (total-party-killed) once after that, but that was okay, because the decisions he made were all on him, and he had a laugh about that. Fans of term limits, please review CA's case. I dunno if other states adopted term limits.
Anyway, executive summary: didn't change anything important. Didn't slow or change in any way the bizarre, disastrous evolution of CA into a failing one-party state (state with population the size of a medium-large European country, with actual diversity in its populace, culture, and economy to rival anything anywhere - and one political party either literally or effectively available to vote for). People are always looking for rules, structural gimmicks, and the like to do what actual voting and responsible citizenship by the electorate hasn't done or won't do. "Just this one weird trick" is exactly as real in governance of a representative sort as it is in online ads ..... Posted by: rhomboid at March 05, 2018 07:03 PM (QDnY+) 113
I'm all for term limits. If a politician won't step down after 2 maybe 3 terms there should be, say, A 10% chance of poisoning or some other mysterious death.(additive every year they persist in office) I am in no way advocating violence. Just Karma. They would not like me if I were king.

The funny thing is, it is only in the movies of the 1950s that psychologists usually have Van Dyke beards. Such beards had stopped being trendy decades earlier. Real psychologists of the era instead had leather elbow-patches. But for Hollywood (especially B-movies), "Van Dyke beard" was the stock character-look to indicate "psychologist," because it reminded people of Sigmund Freud.

But what really did Cali in, besides the end of the Cold War and demographics (thanks Hispandering fools!), was the "Top Two Open Primary", which will just about always shut GOP candidates out, unless and until the Party learns to have "pre-Primaries" or "straw polls" in advance where they all get behind the candidate they want to finish second in the Open Primary. There was a fantastic 1970s Canadian rock trio not named Rush called FM.
Their debut album, Black Noise, is a mind-blowingly cool admixture of pop, Prog, fusion and new-wave with a sci-fi bent. Source of their minor hit "Phasers on Stun." Their next album was recorded live in the studio straight to a wax master: Headspace Direct-to-Disc is pretty damn cool as well. They had a violin/electric mandolin player named Nash the Slash who performed wrapped up head to foot like a mummy. I am not making this up. He went on to solo fame in Canada. I've brought it up before, but will again because I think it was such a clear, distilled example of what the country is up against.
In the run-up to 2010 - one of, if not *the*, biggest partisan wave election in history when you go down below federal level - the House GOP (the party leadership, at that point) was dragged, almost literally kicking and screaming, to put out *some* kind of agenda, theme, ya know, a reason to actually elect them vs. the other side. They were furious. They just wanted to sit there and let the election come to them, without making any icky commitments or setting specific goals. So that was the "opposition" party. Which showed its true colors when it came time to redeem their central specific promise of years' standing - repealing O-care. Posted by: rhomboid at March 05, 2018 07:12 PM (QDnY+) 158

Curmudgeon and junior, the "jungle primary" thing is quite recent, and mostly just put the finishing touches on the one-party de facto state. There had not been any upsets or shocking D losses to R in ages. IIRC, in 2010 - as noted above the greatest wave election, at all levels, in our national history - I believe 1 - one, uno, odyin, ein - CA incumbent was unelected. In a state with about 354 districts and a huge population. And unemployment in some of those districts was 30-40% at the time.

I remarked that I am genuinely surprised that the powers-that-be let Pelosi out in public. Anyway, if I were up say 16-8 in a game I'd slack off or start playing right handed to give him or whomever a chance to make it a game. (A girlfriend called that an only-child thing). So I'd lose some of those games. If Joe could beat me 21-0 it made him happier than winning 21-1. Capt. Hate, I still recall Hewitt losing his cool for the only time that I heard on the air. Right after that mid-term. Details vague, but basically Dem arrogance and incompetence had put them over a barrel about appropriations and other matters, and Senate GOP actually held a veto of sorts. Astonishingly, they wrote a letter saying nothing would happen in the Senate until the crucial budget matter (??) was worked out in the House.
Instead of delaying action til the last minute of the waning lame-duck Congress - thus denying the Dems the chance to do any more vandalism before they lost the House, and basically Politics 101 - the f***king House leadership folded instantly. A few senators blasted them, and Hewitt was apoplectic. For one show. Next day, back to semi-shill for the GOP, whatever it did. Of course since the GOP screwed up, the Dems got to take up bad stuff and pass it in the final minutes of their control of all Congress. IIRC, Moscow Treaty on nukes, DADT legislation, a few other disasters. Posted by: rhomboid at March 05, 2018 07:41 PM (QDnY+) 292
When are things supposed to wrap up?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 05, 2018 07:33 PM (8+Ozj) I have no idea. The ex asked for the temporary to be final and the Judge shot it down and said she wants to see how things ajust, which signals a big change of circumstances being tried out. That's the only positive I got out of it. That and redpilling that men and fathers can be victims of abuse too and we are people but have no laws and counseling to help. I'm not holding back. I'm using great tactics the elder members of the Horde have taught me when dealing with SJWs and Commies. Thanks for letting me vent. I can't stop laughing about the smart was comment concerning teachers. I'm so tired. Night Horde. Posted by: Yo! at March 05, 2018 07:41 PM (vGJ7N) 293

Tea Party was smaller/weaker in DC, but they were representing the coming tidal wave of anger. The anger got greater over time, but tea party even at lower levels of outrage, still (probably) represented the majority opinion.
Establishment was governing on behalf of the minority that gave them big bucks, the donor class. And they usually represented the globalists which were selling out America to some "global governance". So yeah, they were bad people with power representing the donor class, not the real majority. The tea party (broadly) is the sleeping giant even now. (borders, trade, sovereignty, anti-spying, anti-censorship, anti-DCmafia) Posted by: illiniwek at March 05, 2018 07:48 PM (bT8Z4) 310

There is an old saying, dance with the one the brought ya. That is to say, if you are taken to a party, then you had better plan on dancing with the person who brought you, or expect, at best not to be invited back, and at worst, to walk home with your shoes in your hand.
For some bizarre reason, the establishment has convinced themselves that THEY were the ones bringing US to the party, not vice versa. So they dance around with whomever they please, whenever they please, confident that we will wait patiently while they screw around, and even invite them back to the next dance. Someone needs to tell them, we paid for the dance, and have the car keys in our pocket. Posted by: Dean Wormer at March 05, 2018 08:10 PM (fftfA) 317
