FBI: No, We Will Not Turn Over Information About Secret Meetings Between Barack Obama and James Comey Because The Liberal Media Isn't Super-Interested In It

Oh -- the liberal media isn't interested in it, therefore, you can invoke part of the FOIA law that says you don't have to expedite a FOIA request.

So the liberal media gets to determine whether non-liberal media organizations are entitled to FOIA, huh? Swell.

The FBI states it will not expedite the release of documents about secret meetings between FBI Director James Comey and former President Barack Obama, according to a letter the bureau sent to The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Such information is not "a matter of widespread and exceptional media interest in which there exists possible questions about the government’s integrity which affects public confidence," David Hardy, the section chief for the bureau's Record/Information Dissemination Section, told TheDCNF in a Feb. 26 letter.

TheDCNF, under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), requested records of all meetings between Comey and Obama and sought an "expedited process" as provided under the act when issues are of great interest to the media and the records address issues pertaining to government integrity. TheDCNF FOIA request was filed Feb. 16, 2018.

The issue prompting the FOIA request was the disclosure Comey held a secret Oval Office meeting with Obama on Jan. 5, 2017. Comey never divulged the meeting to Congress.

Susan Rice, Obama’s national security adviser, former deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, and former Vice President Joe Biden also attended the meeting.

This is the meeting that prompted Susan Rice to write an email to herself claiming Obama had told her to do everything "by the book" -- including concealing the existence of the probe from the soon-to-be Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the United States.

No, that doesn't raise questions about the integrity of the FBI at all.

42 This one actually raised my eyebrows when it broke.

There is the endless taffy yank over Sessions, or Sessionzzzzz, and what's exactly going on with the DOJ, FBI, and the investigating congressional committees.

But this really is hard to understand.

You'd think Sessions and Wray would understand they're stewards at a time of existential crisis for their institutions. The real thing. Complete collapse of public confidence in integrity and competence. Once in a generation (if that), kind of stuff.

But it took a phone call from Teh Donald to even get the NDA for the Uranium-1 informant torn up? They block this kind of FOIA request (with the orwellian rationale for denial).

Cue all the tired Sessions stuff. But meanwhile there is a dead serious mystery as to what is actually going on, and what exactly Sessions thinks is going on - and how much time/space he thinks there is to address this real crisis.

When formerly trusted institutions are shown to be rotten corrupt husks of their former selves, as has happened with the Dept of Justice since Barky began his rule, somebody needs to step up and take charge. Mr. Sessions might indeed be a decent and honorable man, but he is not doing his job to drain the swamp. We have 3 more years, 2 before the reelection campaign begins.

Posted by: steevy at March 05, 2018 02:19 PM (LiyEm)

99 The only thing tired about the Sessions stuff is....Sessions himself.

At best, perhaps he's trying to address an extraordinary event within the existing system, an effort which is doomed to failure since that system is corrupted.

I think it goes a little beyond that. It's hard to switch your thinking when a trusted institution betrays that trust. Perhaps he's uncomfortable with that thought and doesn't want to go full bulldog because he's afraid of what he'll find. Or maybe he's a part of the problem and doesn't want to expose himself or his allies.

Whichever, it's time for him to go. He is not part of the solution.

128 42 This one actually raised my eyebrows when it broke.

Posted by: rhomboid at March 05, 2018 02:11 PM (QDnY+)

===============

For quite a while I was in the Jackstraw/Sundance camp about Sessions, that all of this was battlespace prep for after the IG report came out so Sessions could come down on the deep state denizens and look like he's being independent. However, the fact that Sessions has shown a pattern of being unwilling to reign in the FBI in matters like this has me thinking twice. I'm starting to think that Trump really is getting fed up with Sessions. It'll be his reaction to the IG report that'll tell the tale. If so, he'll be gone after the midterms at the earliest, barring Rosenstein or Mueller doing something really provocative (Indicting Kushner or Don Jr. on BS charges would do it). I don't see it happening any sooner because of the Senate. He'd have to cannibalize other agencies to restaff the upper ranks of the DOJ.

Regarding Sessions: I think it's a mix of "he just doesn't get it" and a borderline pathological focus on "following the rules".

129 Filing FOIA requests is the easiest thing in the world.

Getting the actual information requested? Not. So. Much.

A decade or so ago, PA passed a revision to the state FOIA law that was touted as bringing more openness and transparency to government and as greatly speeding the process. I was given the task of reading the proposed bill and analyzing the actual impact of it.

Everyone who is surprised that, in reality, the bill more or less completely destroyed freedom of information and made basically all state records exempt from disclosure raise your hands? No one? Clever girl.

I did tell everyone that I believed it would promote faster responses because hahaha no is really quick to send out in response.

I am on board with Jack Straw about this being a long game, and we cannot know all that is going on behind the scenes. I get that this has to be paced to ensure that all involved are prosecuted, and Sessions has to be quiet as they scoop up the participants so close to him in the DoJ, FBI, Obama WH. BUT I would really like just the smallest sign that that it is really happening and not some great delusion. Is it too much to ask that he at least make them comply with subpoena requests?

(2) He doesn't actually want anyone to see what they were discussing because it is really bad for him.

(3) He is lazy and really doesn't care what was being discussed or who this Mueller guy is.

(4) He is being blackmailed to keep quiet about Obama's shenanigans or else something bad about him gets released.

(5) Some other things that are not occurring to me.

He seemed taken aback a bit and my wife she voted for Trump) spoke some Thai and he offered that the TV is on CNN b/c their are the only "neutral" TV channel out there. I laughed and said he needed to be some reason on what CNN is actually spewing which are either outright lies or very misleading statements. 198 IIRC, during his investigation, the OIG is to report evidence of crimes IMMEDIATELY to the DOJ for prosecution.

IF SO, Sessions likely has many indictments already... some of the 13,000 under seal. Further if so, these will be unsealed when the OIG report is issued in the next week or so (Last I heard, extended to middle of March) as the perps and crimes will be public.

Just throwing speculation against the wall.

This has the potential to get very, very entertaining. And, it is likely a very bad move on the part of the FBI. Because, when they lose that battle of words and interpretation, it will likely expedite the FOIA requests across the board subject to penalty on violation.

Posted by: Northernlurker but call me Teem. at March 05, 2018 02:34 PM (nBr1j)

It appears that the actual answer to that question is that the FBI and DOJ are not accountable to anyone at all. In theory, Congress has oversight of the FBI. In practice, Congress, having long ago FUCK YOU APA discovered the joys of delegating it's authority FUCK YOU APA, refuses to take actual punitive measures.

The DOJ answers to the Executive branch. In theory, Trump can fire every single solitary AG, by the by, the only thing Bill Clinton's ever done and that includes breathing with which I have no quarrel. In practice, any Republican Executive who attempts to exercise his legitimate authority will be pilloried by all and sundry.

Thus the FBI and the DOJ consider themselves untouchable because they are.

After all, DOJ lawyers lie and lie and lie and lie and lie and lie and lie in court and nothing ever happens to them other than oooohhhh scary words on paper.

Nene says he is coming back to fight poverty in South Africa. The minister of Finance says he will do this by forcing the reserve bank to print more money and give it to the poor, especially the unemployed. Billions if that is possible.

"South Africans continuing to be poor when we can print more money to ensure that everybody has it. Our people are poor because there is a shortage of money in the country. It's not the shortage of jobs that makes people poor, it is the shortage of money. We have paper and ink, so we will print more money and give it to the poor, and make all of them billionaires if that is possible." Nene said.

The minister did not say how much more money will need to be printed. But he did reveal that this plan will be executed in in the next two months or so, and that every South African will be rich.

That's possible. In that case it doesn't really matter what the IG recommends as long as the report details the violations in nauseating detail. If it draws Rosenstein and Muller in as part of the problem, so much the better.

Even if the fucker only worked there a month.

That's were it needs to start. We have to have someone at the top of each Executive Branch agency who cares about the country and doesn't have a backroom agenda that includes fighting against Trump.

A house cleaning starts this way. From this start, we can begin to rebuild confidence in each agency and get back to the work of the people.

Maybe we will go back to Victorian times when ladies always needed an escort in public. Not for the safety of the women but the men!

334 Every one of the deceitful fuck sticks will retire rich beyond our wildest dreams, not a care in the world, not a single thing to worry them, with nothing but searing pride in their accomplishments and disdain for everyone else.

Look at Barry and his husband Michael. See what happens when you are really good at being a con artist? It's even better when your audience does the hard work for you.

If there is not a swift and clean cut I fear the drama that unfolds will not be easily mended.

336 Take this at face value for a moment- They asked for an expedited release. He said no because there wasn't a clamor for it. It appears that he is using a new "expedite" rule against Daily Caller but is not blocking the request per se. Simple fix. Last ratings Fox had 15 of the top 20 shows last week. Massive share of viewership. Have the junior key grip from any Fox show send a request in. That should meet the standard.

How was it anything other than the Whoreyweird view of Flyover Country. Be specific. Everyone in that movie was portrayed negatively including the lead character.

342 Trump should start his day tomorrow by firing David Hardy.

Posted by: Sven at March 05, 2018 04:12 PM (fw1q0)

343
The only thing that actually stops a president
from cleaning house and firing all these people is how it would look in
the media.

I believe that the country has lost so much respect for the DOJ and
FBI, along with the IRS and EPA that Trump could pull off a complete
bloodletting without any additional damage.

He's taking all the shit they can throw at him now. There's nothing
left to throw. They don't have the votes for impeachment, so he's
golden.

Mr. Trump, go for it.

Posted by: Jwest at March 05, 2018 03:02 PM (/roJx)

I believe that the DC elites are so scared of Trump and think that Trump would possibly do what is listed above, that is why the Senate has told Trump he cannot fire Sessions. The Deep State uses this sleepy man as their only counter to Trump power, as their ability for reason and logic flew the coop a long time ago.

Without a real AG, Trump is quite limited in effective counter actions against the Deep State.

Sessions needs to GO, NOW.

If Mueller tries some technical BS move against Trump, especially after over a year of nothingburgers and 10 year old charges against Mannafort for money laundering, we could see an actual uprising. Not the BS Antifa crap.

Constitutional Americans are entirely fed up with the Leftist anti-American shit. Crooked Mueller and the entire leadership of the FBI being felonious jackholes, Go F*** Yourselves. Keep your lying ways going for the next result. It will be as ugly as one can imagine.
