CNN: Broward County Sheriff's Deputies Didn't Enter School to Stop Shooter
Yup, good guys with guns can't stop a shooter. Especially when all they do is take cover behind their vehicles.
When Coral Springs police officers arrived at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14 in the midst of the school shooting crisis, many officers were surprised to find not only that Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson, the armed school resource officer, had not entered the building, but that three other Broward County Sheriff's deputies were also outside the school and had not entered, Coral Springs sources tell CNN. The deputies had their pistols drawn and were behind their vehicles, the sources said, and not one of them had gone into the school.It's just more proof that it's crazy to want your own gun to defend your own body.

The police aren't there to protect anyone. They're there to document the pools of blood on the floor and to take the suspect to jail.

This event is horrific. I can understand trying to gain a site on the shooter calling in position and description is mandatory but then one should "move quickly on the attacker to defend and protect the innocent." Wonder if anyone was advised to hold their position via dispatch? The shooter should have been taken down quickly, WTH! FBI and it appears there were two counties of law enforcement involved too.

Second time tonight: The officer doesn't have to "charge in like a Marine". He can infiltrate, seek a good vantage point, and try to take out the perp with a well-aimed shot, or just maintain harassing fire that puts him off his aim, thereby reducing innocent casualties.

You are misunderstanding the doctrine on how police departments are supposed to react to an active shooter. My agency had a policy that first on the scene were to immediately enter the building to engage the shooter. No waiting on backup. We did drills in our high school, too.
The doctrine was revised after Columbine. I have noticed that the current crop of officers seem to either lack the intestinal fortitude or have forgotten the lessons learned. This isn't the first time in recent memory where the cops are stooging around while people are being murdered by an active shooter. If the Broward County SO deputies had acted like the Coral Springs PD officers expected, Coral Springs PD Chief wouldn't have "communicated what we saw" to the command staff.

Maybe the local police don't, but the school had a "resource officer" living onsite whose job was dealing with campus crime, campus criminals. Add to that the multiple reports that kids made about the shooter, the schools knowledge of his threats to kill someone, and oh yeah, his years of dealing with this kid personally and meeting with his family, social services. etc.
I have no doubt as soon as he heard the first shot he had a really good idea who it might be.

Yeah, I know, but if there was anyone onsite who would have known of the (I'm guessing) handful of kids capable of doing this, it was him. It was his job to know them, even if he was there to cover it up instead of record it. The Coral Springs PD officers don't know the student body, so they would not be able to quickly distinguish potential shooters from victims.

How do they know there's no multi-jurisdictional task force already set up -- most regions have disaster/mass-casualty plans already set up, after all.
Why is a lot of police at the home of a mass-murderer surprising?

Firstly ... Gun Laws, like most everything else, SHOULD be written at the State Level. The notion of Incorporation - the Federal Power of enforcing The Bill of Rights - was not originally part of the deal. The Feds used Incorporation to get their nose in the tent.
So ... let's say Florida lets this go through - and 18 year olds can't buy a long-gun. I call that bullshit - but it's Florida's call. And if we find that the majority of Floridians are against such bullshit - but their State Government forced said bullshit upon them via Force of Arms - let me know. Because that would be cause for Revolution. And I'm not joking on that. Not. One. Bit.
However - if the majority of Floridians think 21 is the minimum age for a long-gun ... I don't care. Any more than I cared about the stupidity of New York's latest law ... or Connecticut's stupid fucking registration.
Why don't I care ? Not because of a "more than ten miles away" head in the sand attitude ... but because I vigorously defend Indiana's right to set gun laws in our own state. As it turns out - we really like our guns. Just as much as Texas. So Florida, New York, and Connecticut must set their own as well.
Florida fucks up Gun Laws enough ... and I'll avoid the state entirely. Just like I avoid Illinois, New York, California, and the rest. Hell - I won't vacation at Myrtle Beach because South Cackolacky won't honor my Concealed Carry Permit.
Just my two cents. Usually about two cents more than needed.

Why was a plea deal offered the next day to avoid the death penalty if he admitted it and to prevent the trauma of Broward County of a real trail which would involve a real investigation following the procedures? His own lawyers words btw.

Why was a plea deal offered the next day to avoid the death penalty if he admitted it and to prevent the trauma of Broward County of a real trail which would involve a real investigation following the procedures?
I'm not his lawyer. But I'd suspect a plea deal is being offered because he's admitted his guilt and doesn't want to die. It also means the survivors won't have to testify and the taxpayers don't have to pay for the trial.
I'd rather see him fry, but, hell, I don't think he'll have a long life in prison.

I don't know about the entire state - but I can't imagine those people turning in their guns, or taking their sons and daughters not being able to buy guns.
