This is kind of a CPL Upham thing. Having never seen combat I can only pray that I would have cinched up my belt and run into the fray. But I don't know. I've seldom faced anything like that.
As a kid I found myself in a few fistfights, and I think there is the same kind of fight or flight thing. There is a real moment where you become paralyzed as your brain processes events unfolding in slow motion. A few times I ran away. The other times I got fucking angry and began throwing haymakers.
But, if I were to find myself in his shoes, I would think of the kids, and hopefully mutter "fuck it" and go in to end it quickly.

Now, I certainly disapprove of his choices, but he probably doesn't deserve *quite* as much hate as he's getting.
He would have been fine working at a restaurant or a department store.
The system in place to choose him was also at fault.
We really don't have seriously thought-out methods for choosing a person like that, or for training people to ensure they will do what they need.
The military kind of does, but that's not directly applicable to the rest of the world, and it's not always right either.
Just like *everyone* needs a little help to be more resilient in life, people like this SRO needed a lot more help, and didn't get it.

There was some sort of party in my house's basement and we were all watching a baseball game while talking and the like. But one team was wearing light blue Napoleonic French hussar uniforms with their pelisse jackets draped over the shoulders, as was the summer style, playing against a team of green-jacketed light cavalry chasseurs a cheval. Coaching staff or umpiring staff were dressed in French Marshals' uniforms; there were others in the dugouts dressed in noncombatants' plain uniforms like medical staff. "We" weren't really watching the game but party talking instead but the light-blue hussars were fielding. Then I woke up.
Maybe they were the Blue Jays and I was thinking about Napoleonic uniforms because I had watched a documentary on the Romanovs featuring Alexander I fighting Napoleon that had shown Russian reenactors drilling.

You see this in online games that have PvP (Player vs Player) combat. A player is used to dealing with computer-controlled opponents, and then is suddenly confronted with an opponent that's controlled by another player. There's a tendency to freeze up and then panic. Been there, done that (at least in on-line games; never in real life).
But it's the shock of the whole thing that causes that "freeze and panic" moment. The deputy's situation appears to have been different. He was outside the building. He had a chance to get himself in the proper frame of mind before going and looking for Cruz.
He didn't.

Nope, experience indicates the correct response is maximum aggression toward the shooter as soon as possible. Obviously that doesn't mean shooting into a crowd wildly, but while these are statistical outliers the vast majority of them won't keep fighting in the face of opposition.
Hell, the Klackamas Mall shooter backed into cover and shot himself at the *sight* of armed opposition, no one even got a shot off at him.
It's an unbelievably *scary* situation, but it's not as unpredictable as it seems.

Tariffs are legitimate tools of state. They are one of the actual ways that the federal government used to be funded - though now that the federal government can take whatever it wants from the citizenry it can let foreign companies slide on tariffs ... the People are picking up the tab. And tariffs are important strategic tools. I don't where this idea that tariffs are nothing but pure evil came from.

What I've read in the past suggests that this is the usual reaction. The moment that the shooter realizes that there is actual armed opposition on site and possibly confronting him (as opposed to just hanging out around the perimeter), the usual shooter's reaction is to shoot himself. Not all of them do that. But the majority of them do.

The professional and wealthy classes do not depend on money from the sale of goods they make; they earn their living from high value services. For them, it is most profitable to support no tarrifs and free trade - their income will not be affected, and their living costs will go down.
The lower middle class to poorer classes has a much different calculation - yes, their costs will follow, but since they earn their living from work with sales and manufacture of the goods in question, their incomes will collapse much more dramatically when the value of their labor is undercut by forcing them to directly compete with cheap 3rd world labor.
So low tarrifs support the Professional Class and the Wealthy - Tarrifs support the working poor and the lower middle classes.
Which part of society do you want to support? That's what the fight is about.

Apparently five counties in California decided to go ahead and authorize teachers to conceal carry while at school.
Fortunately *cough*, the California legislative bodies and Governor Brown immediately sprang into action. California state law had allowed school superintendents to decide whether it was legal to carry a weapon while in a "school zone". This was how the five counties were able to justify concealed carry on their schools. But on Friday, the law was modified to disallow that.

Since 2009. A decade. That's why I'm having such a difficult time with the lost his wits scenario. He had to have played this scene out in his head many times. He knew about this Cruz guy. He ran outta the fvckin' school away from a student he was with. That really did it for me.
And 4 long minutes. That is a long time. To decide to let kids die when you have a gun. I just can't find a way to see that this guy did not coldly decide to stay outside. To do nothing. Less than nothing. It's reprehensible.

I like that movie. Everything I've read about it though is that the critics tore it up. I guess I'll never be a movie critic. My standards are a lot different from any pro. MrsCaniac's dad has been in and out of the hospital for the last 45 days. He has emphysema and now what the doctors think may be lung cancer. Right now, his life is a razor's edge. If he is getting his meds, oxygen, food and rest on schedule, he does as well as you would expect. When he doesn't get them correctly, he has to go to the hospital to be stabilized. My mother in law is not physically able to care for him, but she keeps saying that she can and he keeps telling the doctors that he wants to go home and have her take care of him.
The social workers? Worthless. They keep telling MrsCaniac that there is an open file on her dad's case, but they keep allowing him to go home with her because that is his choice. The social worker has really screwed everything up because of all the advice that they gave the Mrs. Every bit of advice has proceeded to blow up in her face.

This. I never said tariffs were never appropriate, but their use should be tightly targeted and carefully time limited.
9 times out of 10 tariffs are stupid. You'll do far more harm to the economy as a whole than you will to benefit the people you're trying to "protect". Labor isn't the only cost that goes into manufacturing. The availability of raw materials, stable government, respect for private property, transportation, cost of energy and regulatory burden are equally and often more important. You think American companies can't compete with cheap overseas labor, even at 10 times the labor cost? Ridiculous. American workers have a hundred times the productivity*. Gutting the regulatory apparatus would have many times the positive effect of tariffs in benefiting any industry you care to mention.
*"10 times" and "a hundred times" are rhetorical, I don't have the time or inclination to spend the next few hours looking up the exact percentages.

This guy chickened-out. How can we ensure that never happens again? Can't be done, and I don't care if every armed school guard hired is a veteran with an award for combat valor. Past performance is not an absolute guarantee of future performance.
And one guard for a large facility can leave a lot of time for mayhem to occur, even if the guard is Alvin York re-incarnated, if the guard's at the other end of the facility and/or on another floor from the action.
I'm writing all of this because I have seen a lot of comments here at AoSHQ and at other blogs saying one guy with a long gun is all that's needed to protect a school. I don't think so, not if your protection objective is zero victims.
I believe armed guards and entry screening (as at airports) at schools is the only way to achieve a zero or near-zero victims result. If you want to keep all nuts with a wide variety of deadly weapons (not just guns) out.

Last year my bipolar SIL's meds stopped working. My brother called the cops in Titusville and they couldn't lock her up until she made a threat. It took a few minutes and she did, then they did. They kept her for two weeks to make sure her new meds were working properly.
With regard to the school cop, he was derelict in his duty to those kids. He should be terminated, not retired. He had a duty and took an oath to uphold it. There is a lot of blame to go around but he was the last line of defense for those kids.

Yes, consumers pay either way. But, which is better? The good being produced here, with our fellow citizens having the jobs, or the goods produced in a foreign land, with some other country's citizens getting the job. If you have tariffs to even out the costs, we will be further ahead by having the jobs here at home.
And it is incorrect to say that tariffs protect local companies from competition. it only protects them from *foreign* competition. They still have to compete with other US firms and if they can't, they will still die.

For one, there may be those who object for religious or other reasons (you really want them to bake the cake?).

I think you're right. The teachers who would be best with guns are those who already own and are comfortable with them. Some people just aren't. And I don't know that Bambi the Ditz who is screwing one of her 15 year old pupils is someone I'd want to see carrying. I could see the gun of a careless teacher being stolen by a student.
Somebody yesterday brought up mandatory gun ownership. I think that's as bad an idea as banning guns across the board. Not only I am against forcing people to own something, there are people who will never feel comfortable with guns or who are too stupid or feckless to handle them.

The office of Sheriff is usually an elected office. I assume the same is the case in Florida. I doubt the governor has the power to remove a sheriff unless there is criminality or corruption. Again, I don't know the specifics for Florida, but I doubt very much that the governor has the authority to remove any elected official just because he wants to.

The period costuming and sets are amazing. The main character is a bit of a pussy and kinda bad at his detective job.
But the plot and other characters are carrying the show for me.
I admire the ability of a German production company to work around the anti-Nazi laws. The focus of the show isn't about the rise of the Nazis.

Yes, it does. My problem, and it's a much broader one, is that I don't believe my eyes and ears anymore when these big events transpire. I now have to resort to asking myself whose interests are at stake and try to interpret "truth". I don't believe the local PD. I don't trust the FBI. I don't have faith in Social Services. I sure as fuckity-fuck don't trust the media. And now we have the Activism Army moving in on a "local story". The parade of ass-covering here is epic and the trusts that I used to grant to institutions is gone.
So I refuse to jump at the first narratives (or "facts") that come out now. It's a life lesson that I finally accepted when I turned 29 last year. So now I cannot jump all over this SRO with a) limited, parsed information, and b) myriad interests looking to escape fault or move an agenda.
The hair-on-fire reactions that have become the norm simply have to stop. It is making America irrational.

But we must insist upon the freedom to defend ourselves when the State Plan, whatever it is, fails. And that's where preservation of the 2nd, as written, is and remains essential.

It is a weird psychology (if you can call it that for what was a police state.) You have the initial hesitancy and qualms of the German high command. Then the European complete lay-down, which ran contrary to those fears (at least with respect to the Sudetenland, Austria and the rest of Czechoslovakia.) The relative easy conquest of Poland and France. All the grievances of WWI paid off in a lump.
I can see it. You go from the lows of the 20's to a place of European supremacy. It would make anyone out of sorts.
Hitler was not exactly the most stable of people to begin with, but for others, it I think kind of made them wonder- especially with the initial mistake of not crushing the forces at Dunkirk. The Battle of Britain, or the first true gigantic mistake- invading the Soviets much later than optimal.
Plus, propaganda that rivals modern day- but even more unified without dissenting voices.

Mortifying. It is so mortifying to be a woman right now. Between the Marcies and the slutwalks and the women who think they should walk around without shirts, and just naked boobs, and then get mad when men oogle or grab (how stupid are you?) it's insane. Infidel - My Dad started acting severely odd a couple of years ago and things were really falling apart fast. We found him passed out in the driveway and stuff like that. Turns out it was the pain medication that he was on and when it was changed he went back to his normal self. Still with underlying issues but not crazy weird. Hang in there.

There are going to be some serious wrongful death trials against that Sheriff's department. Most likely they will be dissolved and be taken over by the State after this is all said and done.

.I was thinking the same thing. When I found out he was actually a sworn Deputy I thought, no way that could not have happened, but it did. He stood outside safe while that monster was inside shooting all of those kids.
He will have to live the rest of his life knowing what he failed to do.
Taking up a position outside used to be the norm in these situation until Columbine. After that Law Enforcement across the Country changed their policy to go in and end the threat immediately.

But the argument that Leftists are Utopianists and think people an the world are perfectible is at best outdated (there were a lot of liberals who once believed this, but not so much anymore). .I graduated from an inner City school in 1975. We had actual City Police in our School. IIRC there were at least two in the building all day long. They walked around busting kids for pot and drugs mostly, but they were there and they were in Uniform and armed.

I was in the white suburbs, but drugs were becoming a thing. We had a couple of OD's the year prior, off campus on the weekends, to the cop coming in. I guess they thought it would be a deterrent of some sort
