Willow, that is an appalling story. The government cannot and in many cases will not protect us or our children. And they would eb happy to take away you right to do so. I have decide to be an activist and will review every school funding bill. I know what to look fo as a teacher. and fight to keep good people armed.

We're talking engagement in close quarters where long-range accuracy is not a factor. Glocks were designed for the military and shoot just as fast. AR15s seem to have smaller rounds than your typical Glock which are 9mms to 45s. Mag capacity for both are large.

I understand the spin but it is just that , spin. He should have attempted to engage to stop or redirect the shooters fire from others. It happens quite frequently that LE is outgunned but it does not stop them from engaging. He would have had additional mags also.

Great speech so far.
His plea to get out and vote was great. It comes natural to him to reach the people.
His explanation of why the 2 yr elections into a presidency is usually good for the other side made common sense. People are complacent after working so hard to win the Presidency. A lot of work and energy went into electing the president, so people sit back a bit.

One of our group is in her late fifties, and has been suffering from early onset dementia for a while now. Well, her husband has just said that it's so bad that we shouldn't bring dinner over next week to give him an evening out with the guys.
One of the group says we should all take turns staying with her during the day, which is kind of crazy. The husband is a doctor and can well afford care, and according to him, she doesn't know anyone half the time. My fear is she might wander off, burn down the house, or something. He needs to get full-time day care for her stat. The other girls in our group agree.
This is just so sad. She's always been such a vibrant, intelligent, wonderful person. I saw her at our oyster roast and she was smiling, etc., but you could tell she didn't have a clue where she was or what was going on.
Well, husband is picking me up from the hotel soon for another board meeting luncheon, then it's off to MiL's house for the rest of the weekend.

At the engagement ranges we're talking about, though, 9mm would be more than adequate to subdue the shooter, either directly or via making him take cover.

Cops typically carry two full mags in their belt, so one has 31 rounds total.
A pistol shooter can aim and fire around a corner, for instance at a doorway or hall intersect, a little more readily than one using a long gun like an AR.
Fire rate is semiauto, meaning as fast as one can pull the trigger. Glock thus same rate as AR.
There are plenty of YouTube videos showing trained gunners swapping mags on a 9mm semiauto and getting off 31 rounds in a ridiculously short period.
And remember, the killer wanted many victims. The cop should have been after one target.

Nope. AR57's have that black thing on them and the part at the end of the muzzle that makes the bullets aim better. Plus they have a multi-round magazine and can go semiautomated. So they are military, or at least military style.

I can't remember the last school shooting where the perp didn't kill himself. Lanza did. Harris and Klebold did. The VT shooter did.
There is a twitter thread up from a guy describing how Broward County intentionally looked askance at student crime and has for years, including ignoring any tips on potential criminals that might have come in.
There are many layers of guilt in this shooting. Which explains the extreme scape-goating that is going on.

I hope it is becoming obvious to even to the obtuse -- the government and its officials CAN NOT protect you. They aren't legally (constitutionally) required to do so. And the more layers of bureaucracy there are, the more inept they are.We need to realize that each of us is responsible for our safety, and of those we love. And in cases where we entrust our loved ones (children) to the care of others, I think it is time we go in front of our School Boards and ask hard questions, and demand answers.

Her husband is a doc, but yeah. He says it's progressing rapidly. He's heartbroken. She may well need to be in a facility if it continues to worsen this quickly. But he needs to have someone with her during the day, every day. A maid coming in three days a week doesn't cut it.

This is the hardest realization to arrive at, or at least it was for me. You think of disease as something that is endured and then gets better. Or maybe, at worst, it stabilizes for awhile. Dementia gets worse every day (or at least it did for my FIL), and I was always a step behind.

I've offered to bring meals to them, but as far as staying all day with someone who believes I'm a stranger now.....don't see how that could possibly work.

The thing is, nobody knows what he'll do until it happens. You want to think you'll be brave but you don't know. Once in my life I ran into danger to save someone. It made me feel good about myself, that I acted the way I'd hope I'd act. But who knows, another time I might not.
And that's what's wrong with the "oh you're going to count on the janitor and the lunch lady to do what the trained cop couldn't do" argument. The janitor and the lunch lady might not step up, but they might.
If there are eight armed people on campus, seven might shy away from engagement. One cop did. He was only one cop. He was a thirty plus year veteran on a sleepy assignment. He probably didn't know in his heart that he was a coward until he found out.
If eight people are armed on the campus there is at least the chance that one will stand up.

And just think about what would happen if one of the friends are there, and something medically or physically dangerous happens, and they don't have the resources to cope with it. That's why this is at the stage where professional help is needed.
A full time nurse at the house is needed, or possibly an assisted living situation, with 24 hour nursing care available. It is not a good solution, but better then leaving her on her own during the day.

Jane, I've got more experience with this type of thing than I wish I had. Putting her in a memory facility is the best thing for her mentally and physically and is best for everyone else involved with her. No single person can give an advanced Alzheimer's patient 24 hour care. It's impossible. Being alone with a person who is advanced and still mobile is a nightmare. They can do things such as walk out the door, etc. while you go to the restroom, they can become combative , etc. Her husband is likely getting no sleep at night. Having her moved into a facility will allow all of you to visit her with fresh minds and bodies and allow her husband to begin to retrieve his life and his own health. Do not go along with this plan to stave off the inevitable which may result is serious consequences for those involved.

I have to disagree. He was a sworn Sheriff's deputy, not just a mall cop. Mall cops don't carry guns. School districts have "police departments" now. What's the point if they don't act like police. They should be call deterrent guards or something if they can't act, not deputies or officers. He is a coward, plain and simple. He should be stripped of his pension for gross dereliction of duties at the very least.

One of the lawyers on Fox, on Hannity last night said that he first said he "knew the sources" but he refused to tell them who. So then he was subpoena'd he pleaded the fifth, which the lawyer said was against the law for him to do. I wasn't totally clear why, I don't remember what he said exactly.
The lawyer also said he may have been covering himself with the fifth because he originally lied, too.

And I remember my Uncle the war vet telling me that in actual combat, often its the people you think who are least likely who do the best, and the people who you think are most likely to be brave who fall apart. You just never know til it happens.
I was never shot it, but in my oilfield career I was in some very dangerous situations from time to time. (H2S blowout with an airmask one, one breath of outside air and you drop dead) I found, to my surprise, that being in danger made me much calmer emotionally and made every decision very clear. Don't know why, just happens. On the other hand, some of the guys I worked with, especially if they were given some authority, would just start to stammer uncontrollably and freeze completely, no matter how good they had looked when the pressure was off. You just never know til you're there.

Studies from the Military show that taking civilians... arming them... and shoving them into combat... only about 1 in 10 MEN will actually shoot AT the enemy...
We don't have a large enough statistical base about Women to add them into the mix yet... but my guess is it would be even lower.
To enhance the effectiveness... you would need TWO armed Men there... with reasonable training...
Because the military found that once ONE of a pair starts to do what they are trained to do, their partner or small unit will as well...

I worked at a refinery for years, with H2S alarms going off at least a couple of times a month. Thankfully, they were usually small leaks that were quickly contained.
But a question for you: The old timers used to tell us that the first thing to go when you sniffed H2S was your sense of smell. In other words, you get a whiff of that rotten egg smell, start running, don't smell it anymore so you think you're in a safe area and then BOOM, you're dead.

It's the policy of the school system and the police to ignore and coverup criminal behavior by students to keep the system's statistics looking good and money for having low student crime rates flowing.
It's not just this school system either. The Obama administration put in place the incentives to fudge the numbers and coverup the crimes back in 2010. The 27 minute delay on the surveillance is to allow time to delete video evidence of crimes so they don't have to be written up and then entered into the statistical record.
The SROs are hired for their ability to coverup crime not enforce the law or stop it.

Yes, true, although it does depend on the PPM concentration. Very low amounts, a few ppm, will give you a blinding headache first. What's so bad is that it acts on the nervous system, which is really nasty. Not long after a person notices the rotten eggs small, the nasal receptors are overwhelmed and cut out, which is why smell seems to go away. And a little bit after that the muscle control in the lungs gets neutralized, which is when someone falls down and dies.
If someone with a mask can pull a collapsed person out of danger and get them on some mechanized CPR (NOT mouth to mouth!) for 15 minutes, they'll probably survive. It's a weird, weird poison. Oh, and it eats high strength steel just for fun. Turns steel into pieces of brittle wood.

Actually, thanks for saving me 2 or so hours of my life.
And Jack Straw (IIRC) will back me up on having said before the hockey started that without the NHL players playing, any team could win so it would be an interesting tournament to follow.
I didn't say so but I figured the Euro teams who have a fair number of players on each team who are from the same Euro professional leagues and so are used to working together would do well.
Still, Germany is a real surprise. I'll have to see who they're playing against before deciding who to root for though.

Which is why having one armed guard at a school isn't enough. He might chicken out or else the shooter will be sure to take him out first. Having guards and at least some armed teachers (but not advertising who the armed teachers are) would be more effective. If a shooter doesn't know who has a gun or how many people are armed, he'll know it won't be like fish in a barrel.

To the point where we have late-night reflections on the importance of the greatest music in people's lives, none of which reaches before Elvis.
I give a shit what those people think, and I know for sure that the taxpayers' money was spent making sure they'd never be able to enjoy orchestral music. No big complaint; it made great work for me, and I worked my way through college playing rock and roll among other things. But musical ignorance is not acciedntal. Bad Mozart teachers did that. And you know it's true.

Speaking of preparedness:
Do any public schools at any level practice "lone shooter incursion" safety drills?
Back in the day we had no-notice drills for fire, nuke, earthquake, and creepy dudes entering the playground drills.
First rule: stay calm and protect yourself---forget about your belongings (the nuke training was useless but at least we all knew what to do just in case we got lucky).
That's different than "run screaming randomly into the shooters' path." Kids aren't helpless sheep unless they haven't been shown *how* to respond, *when* to respond, and *why* they must choose staying calm.
Lot's of noise about the kind of children we are raising (most don't know how to clean dog shite off their shoes....that's real), but that doesn't concern me. It's idle criticism.
As a former teacher over 25 years, K-12, college, tech schools, and land grant universities, there is a common principle about young people that's being roundly ignored.
Young people are RESILIENT and place a high degree of value on surviving, despite the culture of consumption that has them drugged out and eating bad food, oversaturating themselves with electronic media and virtual reality...blah blah blah.
Some discussants ignore that principle which has been around as long as humans have walked the Earth and it will be around long after all of us are on the bottom of a rootbed somewheres nice.
Young people are trainable. They have limited power in their lives overall, even though blah blah blah. Most of all their brains are hyper-developed but only in 2 of the 7 main areas. But they are trainable through demonstration, stories, and *DRILL*.
Those 3 components inspire them to demonstrate competence. They tend to hate stupid shit coming out of adult pie holes. And I would imagine the Blowhard County Bored With Education is shoveling it by the truckloads.
So...
If parents weren't so pre-occupied they'd engage with their kids in basic self-defense/martial arts training.
The "Raiders of the Lost Ark" sword/gun parody aside, 10 kids in that school with the *MINDSET* to prevail in any way possible against a gun-wielding assailant would have been a support to the JROTC and other heroes that day.
ADVANTAGE---> Human targets become harder to hit targets. (Not saying turn them into ninjas. Saying self-defense is the best defense: and the highest order of self-defense is to not be where your assailant thinks you're going to be.)
Hell make the training into a video game--- take the power out of their fear. And at the same time light a fire under the lard asses "watching over" these hen houses. Kids are pretty good at holding adults to a higher standard when they are doing it for themselves.
Class subject matter and problem solving exercises could be devised at all levels of schooling: if it's about the kids' survival, then teach them to apply academic concepts across disciplines to solve complex problems.
Final thought: here is my definition of "expert"--- a former drip under pressure.
End this tyranny of fear. Hoist the black flag over every school in America and back it the f*ck up with lethal defensive deterrence.
