US Jobless Claims Fall to Lowest Level in 45 Years

Recovery Spring?

We have not seen jobless claims hit this low a level since Watergate was in the news -- 1973.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell to a near 45-year low last week, pointing to strong job growth in February, which should continue to underpin the economy.

...

Claims for six states, including California, were estimated because of Monday's Presidents Day holiday. While that probably distorted last week's data, the underlying trend in claims was consistent with a robust labor market.

"Firms are extraordinarily unwilling to part company with workers reflecting, in all likelihood, the difficulty of replacing them," said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims unchanged at 230,000 in the latest week. It was the 155th straight week that claims remained below the 300,000 threshold, which is associated with a strong labor market. That is the longest such stretch since 1970, when the labor market was much smaller.

Meanwhile, Trump has popped to 48% approval in the latest Rasmussen poll.

Obama was at 45% at this point in his presidency.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump's job performance. Fifty-one percent (51%) disapprove.

Donny Two Scoops gonna be Donny Two Terms?

Hm, maybe Trump will cancel the 2020 election after all, if only to save money and bother. Save that money and build a wall with it!

The truly interesting stuff will happen soon. With so few workers available will the ten million or so who took themselves out of the job market from 2000-2017 decide to step back in?

Because that would be so awesome to our national economy and deficit. It gives me a minor woody - pudgy, with respectable girth - just imagining it happening.

30 Mexicans going home?

As people go back into the job market, it would not be a surprise if the unemployment rate went up, due to the unemployed now SEEKING employment, so back in the labor force count.

Obama got UE numbers down by driving people away from even trying to get a job, so not counted in the labor force.

but I'm too lazy to dig into the underlying numbers ... blacks taking jobs from illegals sounds like a good enough explanation to me.

108 I hope and believe we will get a Trump 2nd term but he is not going to get the incumbent advantage like his predecessors. Almost the opposite. Unfairly I think his detractors are waiting for just one policy screwup and his supporters are one big policy screw up from abandoning him. He has to be almost perfect which he basically has been from my perspective. A lot to ask from someone though.

109 The press did everything it could to build up Barack and he couldn't crack 45% at this point in his presidency, I mean, occupancy.

Meanwhile, the press is doing everything it can to tear down President Trump and President Trump is at 48%.

I don't really believe a lot of polls anymore, but this comparison is interesting. There is no way reading the news would one ever believe this to be the case. I'm surprised it is so high. Will the news media or celebtards learn anything from this? Yes. They will triple down on their same playbook.

I actually think he'll be in a far stronger position the 2nd time around.

For one thing, Trump had trouble raising money because he looked like a long shot to many. I could easily see the 2nd time around him doubling his fundraising numbers.

Also, Democrats will have a nasty and expensive primary. Trump can just go around doing rallies and raising hundreds of millions.

There's a reason incumbent Presidents tend to win something like 80% of the time.

If the economy is also strong and the Dem opponent is weak, I think it all tilts strongly in his favor.

But a wall designed to stop rapists and murderers, and democrat voters will never fly, even if the activity would have the effect of addressing an actual need and at the same time lower unemployment even more.

So I suppose the Manafort/Gates stuff arose directly because they looked into their foreign lobbying, FARA registration, and tax and $$ issues connected to Ukraine.

Only revelation of significant unknown - and unexpected - facts will alter my immediate conclusion that this appointment completely discredited Rosenstein as having the judgement or integrity for his position. The more of this ancillary crap dribbles out, the more outlandish the situation becomes.

Establishment Right-Wingers in Meltdown over Marion Le Pen Invite to CPAC

Several members of the U.S. media establishment -- including so-called conservatives -- have been in meltdown on social media after it was announced that French firebrand Marion Marechal-Le Pen would be speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this week.

American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp was slammed by establishment figures Monday evening after the announcement that Ms. Le Pen would be giving a brief speech at CPAC on Thursday morning.

Schlapp defended the invitation against several media personalities like never-Trumper and senior editor of National Review Jonah Goldberg who accused Ms. Le Pen of being a "statist".

Now, was the officer goofing off somewhere and not doing his job? Dunno. But if he was doing proper rounds elsewhere and an armed assailant is in the halls, what's he supposed to do? Use foul language?

I'm not going to jump on the SRO's head until we know for sure he isn't simply being used as a scapegoat for institutional failures elsewhere. And if the MFM is reporting this, you can be sure they're reporting it wrong.

yeah, as DonnyTwoScoops tweeted, and armed presence (teachers) would scare off most of these shooters, who have no interest in receiving return fire.

A little training and locked guns, maybe a vest. Fire doors that keep most intruders out ... even I have a set of security cams that are easy to set up and monitor (mine is for wildlife). Any threat enters is met with a few teacher in the hall behind cover, and maybe a better armed SRO on his way. Could be done ... the training might even save lives away from school, and a good example to the kids.

364 I have a solution to the gun violence in schools. We just need to post an on-duty police man on school days.

There's your solution. We will never have another gun death in school.

If you do not vote for this, you want children to die.

365 the whole screaming "nood" thing really is silly. similar to someone interrupting dinner in a fine restaurant to yell that the ice cream truck is driving by outside. then having another dozen people yell the same thing and run outside to chase him down. When they get there they yell at each other about who was there before whom.

367 Unfortunately PDT may not get a chance at two terms if he allows universal back ground checks. Which may or may not be what he meant by doing more about comprehensive background checks as part of his fix for the school shootings. Because that's the language the Dems use when they're talking about having Universal Back Ground checks. In case you don't know what that means is that any gun sale transaction must go thru the same check that a purchase from a FFL Dealer. Problem is that means a mandatory registration registry of all guns. Otherwise it won't work.

Every. Repeat EVERY gun confiscation scheme begins with a universal registration of all firearms. They did it in every nation that then confiscated those same registered firearms.

They did it in California and they wanted to do it in New York and Connecticut but the owners said NO.

And that's what will happen to anyone trying that Nationally.

It's good that he's talking about the sensible notion of having certain people armed on campus but the universal background check and National registry is a no go and will result in anyone who votes for it to not get votes from gun owners this November and it will most likely lead to PDT either being impeached in 2019 or being rejected in 2020.

The day a National Registry bill is signed is the day that history will record was the final day of the American Experiment and the beginning of the decline into tyranny and a civil war.

don't sweat it. he is going to make some reasonable offer that will not be extreme enough for the libs to sign on to so it will do nothing, except make Trump seem to be the reasonable one.

I think I read a certain blog for about two years before I noticed the "comment" button.

I said "say what" I can respond to this garbage?

I wasn't net savvy back then.

378 155 what is the point of Mueller..seriously, if all he is finding out is tax evasion, money laundering, etc. that should be the job of the IRS and other agencies. He should hand over his findings, wrap it up and go home.
