Trying to ban guns in the US would be physically impossible, and if you prevent the legal acquisition of guns, all you'd be left with is criminals getting them illegally, which they would do in massive numbers. So we'd be at the mercy of criminals.
But conversely. having some fat security guard sitting ion a folding chair with a gun on his hip at one end of the school would in no way prevent a gunman from shooting up the place if he wanted to.
Yes, if one went to extremes, one could make every school in the country as secure as the boarding area of airports, but there's no way we're going to go to all that trouble. And without that level of security, you really can't "stop" a shooter. And even if you stopped him on school grounds, he could instead just shoot the kids on the sidewalk in front of the school as the emerged at the end of the day.
We will just have to accept that some things just exist (like insanity and crime), and that's part of the human condition.

Agreed. IMO, the benefit of having armed personnel in the school building is to REDUCE the threat and loss of life; nothing will eliminate it entirely. At least armed teachers and staff would have the ability to quickly kill or disable the shooter early in the rampage and prevent it from getting worse.

But when i was teaching and there was an armed robber loose in the neighborhood when kids were arriving, the Principal asked all male teachers to stand in front of the school as a visible deterrent until he was apprehended. I taught a class at a Hebrew high school which had remote buzzer entry and all the security. I understand why that would be a target. My kids went to a private school a half mile down the same road with an open campus. It was nicer.
The ugly truth is that we expect bad things to happen in bad places and not in nice places. Everyone here has made the Chicago and Baltimore comments. Of course we expect shitholes to shithole. We get freaked out when it happens in nice places.

Just the possibility that there are multiple armed people on a school campus would be enough to make school campuses no longer soft targets.
But passing laws saying guns cant be near schools, you are damned near guaranteeing a potential spree shooter a decent body count before theres any real threat to stopping him.
And for many/most of these sickos, body count is what they are going for.
The one guaranteed soft target in every town in American is a K-12 school, which is why you see so many spree shooters (though far from all of them, obviously) shooting up schools.
If schools were no longer so obviously soft targets, we'd probably see less of that.
But whatever, let's just jump right to the logical step of "we need to ban and confiscate almost all firearms in this country"

For example, if the secret service agent who is supposed to take a bullet for the president decides to step out of the way instead, there is nothing anyone can do other than fire the guy and hire someone else.
SCOTUS has repeatedly ruled that cops, for example, have no duty to protect to anyone or even respond to 911 calls if they don't want to.
You cannot enforce a law like that that forces someone to put themselves in grave danger.

But I think one way of keeping most of these "spree shootings" under spree level (so 3 or fewer deaths) is to stop advertising in big letters, "HEY DEPRESSED LOSER PUMPED UP ON SSRI INHIBITORS!!! NO ONE HERE IS ARMED! IF YOU WANT TO GO OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY, YOU'LL GET 3-5 MINUTES MINIMUM TO SHOOT THIS PLACE FULL OF PEOPLE UP BEFORE ANYONE WILL EVEN ATTEMPT TO STOP YOU!" which is what "gun free zones" do.

Because our society is sick. Also because we turn a blind eye to behavior that should never have been normalized.
Now sometimes things have gone too far in the other direction of
course - I was looking at some historical stuff a couple days ago, and
found an interesting stat that the average Londoner living in the 18th
century, if he wanted, would have been able to attend at least 1200
public executions during his lifetime.

Thinking about this at lunch.Kids these days live more in cyberspace than meat space. Instafaceatwit, online gaming all social media. I think that there are those that start having a hard time separating the two.
Being a twitter somebody is not he same as being a local somebody who does good things for real people in meat space for their community.
It's a big problem. Spend all day getting egged on in cyberspace and then go out to meat space and can't relate.
I lived the pre cyber world and to post cyber world. Precyber was better and that includes only being able to see naked girls by finding a muddy playboy at the side of the road while doing my paper route at 5:30 am to earn money to buy a 99cent matchbox.

I've been suggesting that for years -- The R's should make a big show of proposing then passing a law requiring background checks and FFL transfers -- we should call it the Brady Bill and speak of it only using direct quotes from Democrats at the time about how it is necessary to pass Universal Background Checks to stop violence from happening.

Exactly, I've had this discussion with lefties before. They agree eventually that something bad has happened and we need to address that, but when you get to what it was and what it would take, they all turn into either that woman interviewing Jordan Peterson, or screaming "NO NO NO NO" with their hands over their ears and eyes.
We know what the problem is, we just don't want to do anything about it. In essence, mass shootings are a price people are willing to pay to keep their lifestyle. Eggs, omelette.

I suspect that two things drove them to pick those targets over everything else:
a) known soft targets
b) media impressions and seeing what previous spree shooters did.
But I don't think we should assume that there's something unique about schools that cause people to pick up a gun and start shooting.
Remember the big "going postal" scare in the '80s? Seemed like a post office was being shot up weekly? Everyone was trying to explain why...
You never hear about that anymore. I wonder why.

Not anymore. Public schools in MA have trained teachers to coordinate communications to track where the shooter is/is headed, and students trained to fight back if they can't evacuate - use whatever is handy, use overwhelming force (shooter can't stop an entire class all charging him in unison). There are people who have evaluated schools shootings and devised new approaches. Seems this Cruz kid used some of that to his advantage by setting off the fire alarm and shooting as kids fed, so no approach is perfect.

As I sorta said this morning, which I don't recall how I said it, I think if we're looking for a "root cause" of the school shooting "epidemic," the most obvious answer is there are crazy maniacs out there who get their rocks off being the subject of 24/7 news and social media talk.
So... time to start talking about common sense reform, where we get cell phones out of the hands of people, and maybe subject the media industrial complex to a seven day waiting period before they can report on these events.

The biggest issue IMO is people conflate the value system we tore down also tore down racist policies/ideas. So, if you say you want to go back to the old value system people automatically think you wanna bring back Jim Crow, water cannons and attack dogs.

I don't know what psych drugs the postal workers were on but I would guess they were not much different than the ones these school shooters are on. And the school shooters, in their deranged minds, know that school shootings are the fashion for exactly their type of nutjobs.
It's not unlike the summers of carjackings that we had some time ago. All of a sudden, the dirtbags in the inner cities got it into their heads that carjackings were the fashionable thing to do ... and so they did them, every single day.

I really love it here, my wife and I both have good paying jobs so we are saving a move for later. It's not all bad, there are lots of good people, it's the big cities like LA and SF that really suck ass. There is actually a shit ton of open space/rural areas here

By the way, has anyone else here read the late and unlamented Elliot Rodger's manifesto 'My Twisted World"? It gave me pause, because I can see that sort of thing happening again and again without armed school guards and better mental health approaches.
While Elliot Rodger was clearly a spoiled brat and it is best that this bad seed and piece of human waste is pushing up daisies, part of me DID feel pity for a young man who did not enjoy his school years either, who was a product of Hollyleft parents and cultural madness, who never learned how the real world worked, and whose parents used him as a pawn in their fights with each other.

When I think about my life over the last week, I spent a lot of time around armed guards:
--County building (land title issue, armed people there)
--Secretary of State building (incorporation, armed people there too)
--Federal building (tax matters, armed people there too)
--Art Museum (armed guard there)
--My megamall (armed guards there too)
--My bank (armed guard there too)
not counting any local police and sherrifs I passed.
If protecting government matters, money, artworks and major shopping centers justifies armed guards, why not schoolchildren?

Does that include windows? I assume it does, because I attended K-12 in IL in the 70s, in schools built well after the OLA fire, and there was only one door in or out of every classroom I was ever in. I also rarely if ever saw more than one door in any classroom my daughter was in (she graduated HS just last year).
