The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Yo Hadrian! It's me...Rocky!

Sorry, I deserve to have poo thrown at me for that.

No rant today....this is just an interesting tidbit. Ancient Roman boxing gloves discovered near Hadrian's Wall

Unlike modern boxing gloves, the artifacts have the appearance of a protective guard, according to The Vindolanda Trust. “The larger of the two gloves is cut from a single piece of leather and was folded into a pouch configuration, the extending leather at each side were slotted into one another forming a complete oval shape creating an inner hole into which a hand could still easily be inserted,” it explained, in a statement. “The glove was packed with natural material acting as a shock absorber.”

Sounds like the Romans liked to duke it out!

Blue whale carcass carved into, stomped on by tourists taking selfies on top of the creature

Yeah? So? It's dead. It's not some magical talisman that will guide us to a better place. There is nothing noble about the carcass of an animal.

Oh...wait!

"The horrific behavior displayed by these individuals is a sign of the disregard and disrespect of the truly spiritual creatures that ply our oceans," Liz Lewis, director of field operations for Springcreek Conservation, an educational organization that financially supports the Museum of Natural History of Rio Seco in Chile, told Fox News.

You have got to be shitting me! It is a big blob of meat and fat and bone that is rapidly going to start stinking up the entire area. What is more noble about a blue whale carcass than the pancaked bodies of squirrels on our roads, or the occasional possum that gets crunched, or for that matter the cockroaches and mice in the traps of most restaurants? Are we to worship them as representatives of a higher spiritual plane?

22 I have a question that I'd like the horde to weigh in on.
Especially (and this is just my opinion, I'm not a lawyer) since the second is a specific and enumerated right in the bill of rights, and applies to all citizens of the USA, shouldn't whatever legal precedent that immediately makes gay marriage or abortion legal in one state applies to all 50?

Couldn't one easily argue that Wisconsin's CCW Law, or Arizona's, be applicable in all 50 by the same reasoning?

Reciprocity as a piece of legislation seems to be letting the foxes craft the hen house, not just guard it. What ever this congress can "give" the people, the next one could easily take away, and then some.

91 Clarence Thomas was just heard in an opinion this week stating that the rest of the SCOTUS doesn't treat the 2nd Amendment as being equal to the rest of the Bill of Rights.

so, as far as CCW reciprocity goes, those who support either work on the Congress to mandate it, or we do nothing and just hope that Trump is able to appoint a replacement for Kennedy, and better yet hope that one of the 4 libs dies (The Notorious RBG) and then hope that he can nominate someone like Gorsuch, and that the Senate will stay Rep and confirm the nomination, and then hope he doesn't get squishy and change his mind once on the court.

So that's a lot of hopes to line up in a row. Meaning that if you actually want to see CCW reciprocity become reality, you have got to get the Congress to mandate it. Or else settle for just having one more thing to bitch about that will never happen.

92 ftl - the first Lost in Space reboot - I remember a plot point had an older Will Smith going back in time to warn the Robinson's away from some move that would kill them all. Hello!!! You got to go back in time! Why don't you just go back far enough to tell them never to get on that stupid ship that was gonna get lost? ever think of that, bright boy?

Posted by: Tom Servo

That actually WAS the plan...the older Will was around because of funky time distortions and...ah, best not to overthink this stuff.

93 I have a question that I'd like the horde to weigh in on.

My .02

-------------

1. This assumes that the gay marriage and abortion precedents are grounded in law - they are not.

2. One could argue that a CHL applies to all 50 - but I'm not sure it is the best argument. Each state retains plenary power except for those certain powers that only reside with the federal government, or for those liberties retained by the people - and which are in general protected by the bill of rights. Reciprocity seems to me a poor way of getting to a destination - though it gets you closer to it from a gun standpoint.

If the right to bear arms allows states to issue CHL, then it should allow the citizens in states which do not isssue CHL's to carry. Which I believe the Court has somewhat stated. Either allow open carry or CHL.

3. Ultimately, as Justice Thomas has indicated, if the Supreme Court is not going to protect the 2nd A, the lower courts will infringe away.

I understand the practical aspect of it, I just don't understand why the courts own previous decisions aren't being used against them to "make them bake the cake", as it were.

One state recognizes Homosexual marriage, and Obergefell (sic) makes it the law of the land via the 14th? amendment.

That would seem to be a safer and more permanent route to national reciprocity than trusting the congressional viper pit.

after all, abortion has been de facto legal for decades despite how divisive the issue is. Courts did that.

441 Damn, I saw a clip this morning that cheered me up and I don't remember where I found it.

Fat millennial antifa dude goes up to guy wearing MAGA cap and starts calling MAGA guy "a bitch" and telling him his cap caused genocide of Native Americans. (Fat antifa dude says he's native American, although he is suspiciously hairy for an Indian. I suspect he belongs to the same tribe as Fauxahontas.)

Fat millennial continues to talk smack to MAGA guy and finally takes a swipe at him. MAGA dude easily decks him. Fat millennial gets up off the sidewalk and acts all butthurt about being hit and demands that the MAGA guy tell him his name. MAGA guy tells him to move his big ass along.

It's entertaining and also shows what hopeless pussies these millennial leftists are - they get in people's faces and talk shit and hit and then are astonished when the people they are tormenting defend themselves.

Maybe at some point they'll understand that a bit of "toxic masculinity" is an asset.

Posted by: rickb223 at February 22, 2018 11:35 AM (gRZfJ)

Well, I'm saying I think there are a lot more extant guns from pre-background check days floating around out there then we think, and that just counting background checks is not really a great way to count how many new guns are in the market, either, for a variety of reasons -- people can buy multiple guns w/ one background check, there are exemptions from background checks (FFL's can transfer guns around w/o performing background checks on themselves... lots of gun hobbyists w/ their FFL's... if what you say about permit holders is true, too, there's that group. Etc.), and I doubt the system is really that accurate at counting or doing anything to begin with.

I think if someone really wanted to know how many guns there are in the US, they'd have to find sales records of all gun manufacturers big and small for the last 100+ years, subtract out all foreign sold, and then somehow add in all imported firearms.

And somewhere around that cumulative number (some have been destroyed, seized, etc. over the years, I'm sure) is probably how many guns are out in there in the US.

And it's probably a fuckton more than the 200-300 million number oft cited.

I tend to agree. Canoe accidents aside, guns don't usually just
disappear once sold for the first time. And there are been a
fucckkktonnn of guns manufactured in the US alone in the last 100+
years. Where have they all ended up? I would guess there are a lot of
people out there who have a few of their dads guns (or whatever) in a
safe in their closet but don't talk about it much.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes

In some states, CHL's are exempt from NICS checks, therefore they are counted nationally.

How many CHL's buy guns?
.
.
.Yep. For the last 5 or so years there have been about 20,000,000 NICS checks conducted each year in the US. That's about 75,000,000 new firearms in circulation in the last five years discounting checks for used guns.

Add another 20-30,000,000 guns that CHL holders buy without needing a NICS check and in the last 5 years there have been over 100,000,000 new guns introduced into the Country in the last 5 years alone.

Since it's inception in 1999, there have been over 260,000,000 NICS checks conducted.

There are way over 600,000,000 guns in private hands in the US. If anyone seriously attempted gun confiscation they would get about a 10-15% voluntary compliance rate just like CT and NY did with their new registration schemes.

30+ Million gun owners would just say no and there isn't a single thing the Government could do about it.

307 There are Etruscan paintings dating to 700 BC showing men engaged in boxing. According to Aristotle, the Etruscans boxed with flute players providing musical accompaniment.

The stances assumed by the Etruscan boxers are remarkably similar to our own--which makes sense since there are a finite number of movements the human body can make to strike effectively with fists. Some of the paintings show the boxers wearing leather-strip wraps around their fists. Limited grappling and throwing were apparently allowed, just as they were in bare-knuckled contests up to the 18th Century in Europe.

317 "I find it difficult to imagine the Marines I've known shooting at fellow Americans who want to keep their guns."

Yes, I understand that. But then, do you know any currently in the Marines?

The propensity for people to "follow orders" is well known and documented. And leftists are very, shall we say, "enthusiastic" about these sorts of things.

Normal, well adjusted people (mostly) want to be left alone. And they extend that courtesy to others. Does that sound like Leftists to you? Therein lies the problem. How often have you heard some politician say "Well, I personally am not in favor of fill in the blank, but we are duty bound to accept it."

Keep this in context with the decades long push to expunge organizations staffed with people of principles and integrity and competence and replace them with water walkers and weasels and liberal fascists.

I'm telling you, when things go sideways you're going to see shit go down on a Biblical scale. Everything is running on fumes and inertia. When the rug gets pulled - when the music stops make sure you have a chair to sit down in, or whatever analogy gets used. The one caveat, is the police/military has family too. They may well just desert their post.

Notice "they" seem frantic and in a hurry to tie up all these loose ends? It's a race against time, for some reason. They tip their hand, because they suck at OPSEC. It's out there for anyone who cares to read. They aren't shy about espousing their views.

337 I don't like proposals fI'm hearing for more security in the schools: guards, police, ex-military, more security, more cameras, metal detectors etc... (Most schools already have controlled entry and cameras.) This is going to be a huge overreaction and we will end up in 10 year asking ourselves, like with the TSA and the airports, how did this ever happen? Why does it take a strip search to get into a school to see my kid?

School shootings, compared to the numebr of schools (around 100,000) are incredibly rare events, even if they are more common that they were 30 years ago. American public is being panicked into giving up more freedom and expanding the security zone where the govt can treat all of us as criminals. Screw that.

Reminds me of when I was in eighth grade and we had a classmate die of cancer. It really pissed us off when we saw kids younger than us, who probably didn't even know him, bawling and moaning about "how much they loved him."

Bare-knuckled prize fighters in the late 18th Century/early 19th Century are the ones who forced the rules change barring throws--which essentially consisted of picking up an opponent and body-slamming him into the ground. Too many crippling injuries and fatalities.

But yeah, those old-time prize fighters were as tough as it is possible for a human being to be. They'd fight unlimited rounds, keep going until one (or both) of them was either knocked out or unwilling or unable to step up to the line.

Oh, I know the upper ranks of both the military and law enforcement are infested with leftists. However, there is a reason why the military as a whole overwhelmingly votes GOP - yeah, they are trained to follow orders, but they are also aware of how much the left hates them.

Very bad tactics on the part of the left- but then, if they thought logically, they wouldn't be on the left.

Its deeper...

They really do not understand reality. They have been blessed by living in a place where others paid the cost of keeping THEM safe...

So they take said safety, for granted.

They have no idea the shithole most of the world is... how bad other countries are... and how Free THEY are....

And so, are now in the process of destroying the very institutions, that gave them that freedom...

I've bought, um, more than one here in Georgia. Here you still have to fill out the 4473, but they don't run it if you are a Georgia Weapons License holder, the theory being "why waste time and resources to background check someone we've already background checked".

From an email I received today: "Service Members non-deployable for more than 12 consecutive months for any reason will be processed for administrative separation, or referred to the DES (pregnant/post-partum SMs excepted)." (DES is the Disability Evaluation System).

Mattis is basically saying, "If you can't deploy, GTFO of my military".

503 427 If civil war did break out in this country, I think most (not all) of the rank and file military would refuse to attack the people who are, after all, the exact same people they grew up with - their neighbors and families.

I'm not so sure all the cops would be on our side. At least not the urban ones in blue states.

I talked to 2 enlisted dudes yesterday. One was army who did 2 tours in Iraq, and one airforce guy. I asked them about that. The 2 tour Iraq dude say no way we're shooting our people, we'll shoot the officer who gave the order first, take as much gear, a Humvee, or even a tank and go under ground. He also mentioned that's how it would mostly go.

The anti-military stance of the Left has made any of their coup/revolution fantasies invalid from the beginning. Since all the Lefty youth have been taught to shun and patriotism, history, sacrifice for the good of others, and serving before being served, they have not-volunteered for military service. As a result, about 70-80% of the military is solidly Red State, and multi-generational at that. The Left truly does not want to go there on civil war; they won't have a military force to fight it!

Also why the Left wants to get rid of AR-15 style rifles. They know who buys those rifles, and the real purpose those owners would use them for besides perforating water jugs and soup cans. Street mobs and "people's army" types wouldn't do well against them.

506 317 "I find it difficult to imagine the Marines I've known shooting at fellow Americans who want to keep their guns."

I don't think question is about the privates and corporals. It's more about generals and colonels. division, brigade, and battalion leadership.

These kinds of scenarios fall outside of Law of land Warfare training that service members get drilled into them during their careers.

I expect people's conscience may drive them to desert. Entire units? I am not so sure, if a field grade or flag commander were to tell them search, seizure of "contraband", and arrest of Americans is legal.

For example, see the use of US Army combat equipment at Waco.
