The Quotes Of The Day

Quote I

"For me what is decisive is that those who come here, understand, above all, that the values of the western world, this freedom, these basic principles, are different from those in Afghanistan, Syria, China or Bangladesh and that our society is therefore different.

"In essence, it is not only a matter of living by and recognizing the rules, but also of feeling that you belong to a community with a common future." Jens Spahn

Backlash of unfettered immigration is starting to occur worldwide. Will it be stopped in time?

Quote II

“We have a kid who wasn’t legally [able] to buy a beer at a bar, but he can go buy an AR-15? It doesn’t make sense. I’m not saying it should be legal for him to go buy beer. But how is it possible that we can have minors go buy a gun? I don’t have the answer to it. But to the families in Parkland, down in Broward County, it’s sad and I’m sorry and it’s just a tragedy and I hope we don’t continue to see this because it’s too many in the last 10 years with guns.” Lebron James

Quote III

“Obama is the primary person being protected, because all of this spying and all of the collusion to destroy Trump happened with his knowledge and, probably, encouragement.

“And the reason Hillary isn’t charged is because that would mean Obama would have to be exposed as participating in this scheme, too.” Rush Limbaugh

Scientist turned politician. He didn't like being picked on for his beliefs. He sued. He lost. The nobody read it defense works at time.

Canadian climate scientist Andrew Weaver is in a slightly different position, as he decided to run for office several years ago and is now the leader of the Green Party in British Columbia. In 2015, he won a case against the National Post for an article accusing him of scientific misconduct, though that decision was overturned by an appeals court last year.

A separate lawsuit Weaver filed in 2011 finally came to a decision last week. This one involves retired professor Tim Ball, who has a history of blatantly misrepresenting the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports and comparing such efforts to (you guessed it) Hitler’s Germany.

Not every school is sitting on their hands when it comes to safety. A Colorado school district to allow staff to carry.

A rural Colorado school district decided Wednesday night to allow its teachers and other school staff to carry guns on campus to protect students.

The Hanover School District 28 board voted 3-2 to allow school employees to volunteer to be armed on the job after undergoing training.

The district’s two schools serve about 270 students about 30 miles southeast of Colorado Springs, and it takes law enforcement an average of 20 minutes to get there. The district currently shares an armed school resource officer with four other school districts.

There is more work to do with a 3-2 vote.

Fun with numbers. Total US Firearms: Not 300 Million, but 412-660 Million?

We believe that the correct number is much higher — somewhere between 412 and 660 million. You may wonder how we came to that number, so buckle up (and cringe, if you’re a math-phobe, although it never gets too theoretical): unlike most of the academics and reporters we linked above, we’re going to use publicly available data, and show our work.

What if we told you that one ATF computer system logged, by serial number, 252,000,000 unique firearms, and represented only those firearms manufactured, imported or sold by a relatively small number of the nation’s tens of thousands of Federal Firearms Licensees?

Maybe the DePaul Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) should bring in Triggly Puff.

So DePaul, who is more mainstream, Steven Crowder or the beached whale known as Triggly Puff?

Private business warned not to coexist with police haters.

An antique store owner says her business is being targeted with harassment after she displayed a flag with a pro-police symbol on her storefront.

One month after displaying said symbol, a brief handwritten letter was posted to her shop’ s front window. It reads:

Pig supporters not welcome. Flag goes down or you go down.

A 200 year old storm? Hell, what did Man do to cause that and does Al Gore have a hard on?

But unlike Jupiter's Great Red Spot, a storm which has been roiling for at least two centuries, the storms brewing on the windy planet Neptune come and go in just a few years — and now, for the first time, researchers have seen one begin to disappear, NASA officials said in a statement. Robin George Andrews and the Project Drawdown have some great ideas to stop climate change. Educate girls and teach family planning. Third world exceptionalism isn't so great is it?

But two lesser-known solutions also made this most practical of lists: the education of girls (number 6) and family planning (number 7). This is a stunning revelation, one that couldn’t be more pertinent, and yet, for the most part, discussions of mitigation and de-carbonization focus heavily on other matters, from the perceived perils and bona fide benefits of nuclear power, to just how quickly solar power is proliferating.

When you can't win the argument, lie like a rug. Anti-gun bullshit on full display.

Speaking of guns. Gov. John Katshit Mailman's kid has a case of NRA amnesia.

The boast about the NRA endorsement is gone, as are any details about the legislation he signed. In fact, there’s not a lot of specifics at all in the new section: “John Kasich has spoken out on the need for reasonable reforms to prevent future massacres — including the potential of expanding background checks on gun sales and limiting the ability to sell weapons that have often been used in mass killings. As Governor, he recently challenged a bipartisan working group of gun owners and gun control advocates to find common ground that will protect the 2nd Amendment and save lives.”

Are you one to use apps on your "device"? Want to stay away from sickos and disease carriers? Sickweather might be the app for you.

You run the risk of catching the flu, or someone’s cold or some other random virus pretty much every time you decide to leave your house - but what if you knew where people were sick before you went there?

Sickweather is an app that scans social networks like Twitter and Facebook to see where people are reporting that they’re sick, and then gives an area a “sick” rating based on that data.

2 Here's some Cab Calliway lyrics adapted for Betty Boop:

With a long, white beard and a crooked stare
He tramps along with the folks all scared
With a twinkle in his eye, he passes them by
The Old Man of the Mountain!

Oh, he wears long hair and his feet are bare
They say he's mad as a grizzly bear
His cares are none and he fears no one
The Old Man of the Mountain!

He talks with the bears when he's lonely
He sleeps with the sky for a tent
And he'll eat you up when he's hungry
And it wouldn't cost him a red cent!

And he'll live as long as an old oak tree
He'll eat up fools like you and me
Oh, I often sigh and jump and cry
At the Old Man of the Mountain!

6 The Venezuelan Wasteland and the Ignoble Savage

A trope of the Left is back before the eeevil KKKapitalists of Western Civilization came around, all the peace-loving persons of color were "noble savages" living twig-worshipping idyllic communal lives free from silly things like gender or any concept of self. The Left finally get to see the fruition of getting to the goal via socialism; the result is that the proverbial savage is rather... ignoble.

25 Willowed:

Andrew Weissmann is Mueller's main legal hit man. He's the guy who sent Yates a congratulory e-mail for refusing to defend Trump's travel EO.

What I just learned is that he was the prosecutor who blew up Arthur Andersen in the Enron case. At the end, all Weissmann had was that an internal lawyer had OK'd the decision to delete some e-mails before anything like a subpoena had issued. The judge let it go to the jury with instructions that they jurors could convict AA regardless of whether its employees had knowingly violated the law. The jury convicted, and because it made AA a convicted felon it was put out of business, even though it still had the right to appeal. Cold comfort that SCOTUS later overturned 9-0

Weissmann is in good company with Jimmy Drama, who pursued dubious charges of tampering with evidence against Martha Stewart and Frank Quattrone.

Given what we're about to learn from the DOJ OIG report about how Jimmy handled Team Hillary's wholesale destruction of evidence, what should be his appropriate punishment?

Why does my daughter go to a school with a gun-free sign out front ? With a locked glass door and a camera ?
If a mentally ill kid starts shooting the only person that can stop him needs a gun, why does it have to be a cop who is ten minutes away ? A sign at the door saying Armed Security on Campus at all times would make the nuts think twice.
The next school shooter already has his gun despite what the laws say.

182 Here's the skinny on Black Panther, from Rotten Tomatoes.

So far it's at 77%, which is probably skewed high by fanbois opening weekend. This is line with most of the big Marvel movies.

But it's at 96% with critics, many of whom don't like Marvel movies, which is higher than all of the 2017 Best Picture nominees except for Get Out, Lady Bird and the gay movie.

Tennis players are really into it. I think it's a joke. Tennis players are given to stupid fads like that, though. As if supporting the skin is going to somehow help with the muscles that the skin moves over pretty easily ...

Tennis players are also into some sort of drink fad where they all bring 3 kinds of drinks to sip in between games, as if that does anything. One person does something like this and then the rest of them just pile on without thinking. That's how they get all the women squealers on the court. Monica Seles had a tic .. but she won so the rest of them think they have to squeal like they're starring in Deliverance. It would be funny if it weren't so annoying.

281 'Evening, Horde.

Made two significant (to me) purchases today, with a third pending till the end of the month.

The first one will be of interest to Uncle Palp.

* Mint ++ Nikkormat FTn, with 50mm f/1.5 Nikkor, Nikkormat leather ready-case, & all books and manuals. I will run the serial number tomorrow, but suspect it to be right about a 1970 body & lens.

* Mid '90s, JVC Super A receiver, at 110 watts per channel. It's replacing a dead unit of similar vintage and power, which is the Garage Stereo. I have a serious pair of Acoustic speakers up in the rear ceiling corners of the garage. When cranked, I can annoy not just the neighbors, but the entire neighborhood.

* Pending purchase. Full set of tires for the F-150. Front left gave out today with a tread separation. Fortunately, it didn't shed the tread, but the distortion in tire was sudden, distinct and dangerous. It still held air, but there was nothing for it but to quickly swap it for the spare.

Piggy bank is gonna SQUEAAAALLLL when I bust out the cash for that one.

Oh, and my bi-annual Dr. Appointment went well. Blood pressure just on the high side of "normal."

And as one might expect, the brain scan came back "negative."

But y'all already knew that, didn'tcha?

Sure, but that's not what the chicks do. They don't grunt and they don't shout. They squeal and they whine and they yell things ... most of which they do long after they've expended the effort to hit the ball. ANd you know it has nothing to do with the effort to hit the ball since they all cut it short the second the ball goes into the net. It's just a bunch of girls trying to be like Seles and trying to act like they're guys ... but they only manage to pull off a mockery of a male athlete grunting out of effort. And most of the guy players never do that shit.

I remember after the Las Vegas shooting, John Ringo posted a theory that he thought almost everything could be traced back to changes in medication. I thought it was interesting at the time.

As more time has passed, however, in the Las Vegas shooting, something stinks to high heaven there.

335 Jeebus, what's with most of these (hockey) teams never shooting? I noticed it years ago in the NHL on power plays - ridiculous, ineffective waiting for some sort of miracle perfect shot. That's not how goals are scored (Central Army of the USSR was the only team that routinely actually did score that way - but there's not a hint of their organization or mojo in any team playing today).

Czechs are terrible at this. No traffic in front. No shots.

Big ice makes for a better game, but so far, Olympic hockey has been disappointing, except for one game. Kind of boring.

I have no problems with that sort of thing, when it's real. But that's a quick, short burst on the hit, not an extended scream. And when the ball is on the other side of the net it become unsportsmanlike to be yelping.

But Seles certainly couldn't stop. She tried to stop a few times but just couldn't do it, and that shows that it's not the same as a true power-grunt. I am of the firm belief that her noises were more like Nadal's touching himself all over before every point. And he runs into issues with that every so often on time, now. But he can't stop himself and probably couldn't concentrate on the point if he couldn't go through his routine.

This truck is the ugly replacement for my previous 2000 F-150 Supercab.

Which I bought in 2013 from the garage of a widow, who was a roofing customer of mine. It then had only 31,171 miles on it.

Said truck was subsequently totaled, by an 18 y/o Russian Chick, daughter of a recent immigrant... she turned left across oncoming traffic, CELL PHONE IN HAND (texting), and totaled three vehicles, including her own.

That very MINT truck (looked like it just rolled outta the showroom), died with only 47,612 miles on the clock.

And that was in Feb of 2014.

THAT, is the one vehicle I've owned, that I miss the most.

If you have to replace either the ball joints, or tie rod ends.....just do EVERY thing... "zero time" the whole front end.

What you spend there, you'll save in tires in the long run.

My parts bill ran $200 for Made in USA stuff from Rock Auto. And my mechanic (been wrenching for me for over fifteen years), did it all for $400.

No, you won't find deals like that, either in parts, or in labor. But then, you all don't know my mechanic.

Watching him spin wrenches looks like a One Man NASCAR pit stop, with no loss of time in being a solo operation.

This guy is beyond "good".

I'm terrified. I bet it all on being a dad and being the nurturing parent because everybody has failed them. I'm providing resources as a man should but they all go to layers and unneeded supervision.

I'm terrified because if this goes sideways at court, I could be on welfare and basically a mistake away from being homeless.

If I had been the stereotypical man as society deems men to be, I would have moved after the divorce and started a new life, which would have been selfish as fuck.

I've given it all for my kids because they truly aren't doing well. I wish things were different. This sucks. It's literal hell. But I can't be responsible and held accountable for others actions anymore.

I don't know how I'll react if things go sideways because it would fly in the face of reality, facts, logic, a 13 plus year pattern, the health of the kids, and somebody who deeply believes that all children deserve to have both parents heathy and active in their lives. I don't know what else I can do to prove myself.

I'm taking a leap of faith because they are my children and deserve to be healthy, safe, and thriving. I don't care about power or anything like that. I just want them to be safe and their mom to get help for their sake.

But homelessness and welfare scare the shit out of me because I can't have a job since I have to be available for my kids while mom has decided to ignore them and focus on pure selfish hedonistic crap. Just need 6 months to get them settled and feeling safe and growing.

Terrified I am of this abyss I stare into for the sake of my kids and my sake. I truly have given it my all. And I don't have a plan B for the first time in my life.

It makes sense if you consider their motivation was to foment division among their strongest adversary. In the 20's it was probably this and also spreading the world wide revolution. Now it is just about sowing division.

Makes perfect sense that they would play both sides of the fence. Attack whichever side is strongest and actually do as much as possible to rile up both sides into a frenzy.

I do wonder how much they really needed to do or did, however, that our guys were not already doing.

484 I have a one car garage. The F-150 is parked, curbside.

The garage has an old, cast iron, Craftsman table saw, a 3 hp, 5/8 arbor, 13" throw drill press, a '70s cast iron Craftsman 1"x42" belt sander with 8" sanding wheel, a Hitachi 12" dual-compound miter saw with stand, a Bostich 6 gal pancake air compressor, Rigid shop vac, 6 ft. workbench with both a Wilton engineer's vice and Wilton woodworking vice, overhead shelves which are strong enough for me to do pull-ups on... (sorry, Ace), a second 3 ft. workbench, a tall set of Lumix (1970s vintage) tool chests, and a pair of 7 ft. "bookshelves" holding various paints, tiles, thinsets, grouts, electricians tools, plumbing equipment and spare tile for the house.

I've also got a full set of oxy/acetylene welding/torch equipment, a basic buzz box 100v. welder, and am making space for a flux core or inert gas welding kit to be able to manage aluminum in addition to my basic steel set up.

Oh and pedestal mounted router table, and an 8" industrial grinder and polisher.

Plus, a huge variety of hand held power tools of all kinds, all neatly stowed on over head shelves all round the garage.

Hoisted above the joists, are a 5kw generator, a 6.5 hp. Honda powered power washer, the Miter Saw Stand, and the plywood hurricane shields for every window on the house.

Plus, the back corner of the garage has the 110 wpc JVC stereo, it's speakers, and a rather generous collection of leftover bits of wood, tile, granite and Hardie Plank, for whatever projects need the application, thereof.

And you wonder why I can't stuff a car in there.

487 How many states have direct private firearms sales with no 4473 process?

A few obvious key stats that I think Lott would like to have, but which don't exist, are 1) how many *legally* owned guns are used in crimes by the owner, and 2) how many guns sold privately sans background check are used in crimes.

Think someone, Lott or someone else, years ago tried to do a crude answer to (1), but it was based on a limited sample of police depts. that kept such data - shockingly, the number was negligibly small.

488 467 The universal background check is the stupidest demand by the left since it will literally do absolutely nothing.

The universal background check on a legal store purchase is 100% useless. It does not cover the following:
Private sale between 2 people
Black market sale between 2 people
Sale to nutjob with no prior record
Sale to nutjob whose government paperwork was mishandled

As I mentioned just above, a key stat would be legally owned guns used in crimes by their owners.

Have seen an interesting idea re private sales. A cheap, PIN-authorized, one-time way to do the background check in a private sale. Seller pays $10 and gets a PIN that lets him run the buyer through the check. System gives a green light, or a red light.

Bam. Done. Would actually be welcomed by people I know in no-check private party sale states who are cautious but would love to be able to take all the mystery out of it.

492 How many states have direct private firearms sales with no 4473 process?

All of them (the 4473 is a federal thing applicable only to licensed gun dealers), but some states have their own paperwork and loopholes to jump through. Here in NC, for instance, you have to have a pistol purchase permit or a CCW in order to buy a handgun, no matter if it is from a private individual or a dealer.

A

don't exist, are 1) how many *legally* owned guns are used in crimes by

IIRC the Sandy Hook guy was the last mass shooter to actually obtain his firearms illegally (remember he killed his mom for them), the ones since then have all been purchased legally, with background checks and 4473's and everything. As far as "everyday" crime...good question. I'm going to guess vanishingly small.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at February 21, 2018 12:55 AM (vbvxt)

493 GGE, I phrased my point poorly: what I was wondering is how many states don't impose the equivalent, or the actual, 4473 process on private sales. CA of course does - there's little difference between a dealer or private purchase except you escape sales tax. I think a lot of states do that. Was just wondering how many *don't*.

494 The Cornyn bill sounds OK. Include police calls to someone's house on a background check, even if it doesn't lead to an arrest. Of course, there's the potential for abuse, where your arch nemesis calls the cops on you knowing that could disqualify you from buying guns. And would just 1 police call mean no guns forever? Is there a time limit? As with all these things, it could easily spiral out of control and become a de facto gun ban for a lot of people.

Posted by: #neverskankles at February 21, 2018 12:58 AM (6nRrz)

495 Personally if I were to ever buy a used gun, I'd WANT a background check done on me. This way I have a govt issued proof that I bought the gun on Date XYZ, and if that gun ends up having been used in a crime in the past, I'm not held responsible.

501 Colorado has the dumbest background check law ever, as of a few years ago. A background check is now required here for every change of possession of a firearm, rather than just on a change of ownership.

For example, you go to a friend's house and he recently bought a new pistol that he wants to show off. He unloads it and pulls back the slide, and... he has to run a background check on you just to let you hold it for a minute and see how it feels in your hand. And then! You have to run a background check on him just to give his own gun back to him afterwards!

This is so ridiculous that every county sheriff in the state came right out and said, "I'm not enforcing that".

People who get their gun rights taken away in this manner will be able to appeal. And as we know, most judges are not at all hard core leftists and will be fair in their rulings on the matter.

But it reminds us of the dilemma - who decides? Mental health "science" and medicine, beyond a certain point, are far too dubious to rely on for things like this. So - a judge? Yeah, judges are proving real reliable.

But there's no dilemma or mystery of the universe in the FL case. Local and federal law enforcement effed up, spectacularly. Nobody expects them to find the quiet nutjob who suddenly goes rogue. People do expect them to notice and act on the spectacular cases they do know about.

Of course, not sure what they could have done, within current law. That's where the focus should be of course. Not these idiotic moves on specific types of gun or age of buyers.

On the federal level, GOP has perfectly judged its voters (who have rebelled exactly twice in recent history - Brat, and Trump), so it knows how bad it can be without risking a seat. Of course the Dems becoming complete vile lunatics gives the GOP even more leeway to do as little as possible. But guns is probably still on the "don't touch" list.

Most voters and almost all GOP-leaning voters don't give a f**k about "fixing" DACA, other than as a lever to get what they *do* care about - which is border security, enforcement of immigration law, and real (intelligent) reform of legal immigration. And the Dems can't be shamed, and their base can't be reached with any message like this.

As likely as GOP success is in November, it's arresting to think what could be accomplished with an actual political strategy aimed at marginalizing the Dems.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at February 21, 2018 01:52 AM

What if? Hypothetical scenario. The mental health profession knows its ass is covered if things go wrong. The correlation between SSRI medications and school shootings is something like 100%. To pay out $2 million per victim or a total of $34 million dollars (in this most recent) to victims families by the drug companies is a relatively small cost of doing business. Minuscule. Families sign non-disclosure of payment and shut their traps.

Mental health professionals continue prescribing SSRI medications to teenagers. Drug companies continue to generate huge revenues from sales.

There's not much tin-foil in believing that is a plausible scenario. Otherwise some lawyer would have taken the drug companies to court a decade ago.

558 Yesterday it was reported that a Maryland student arrested at High School with a handgun was found to have grenades at his house.

Without any notice of editing, or correction, the headline has been changed to delete reference to grenades, and the word 'replica' has been inserted before 'grenades' in the body of the story.

I watched an interview with her on the slopes after she was dropped to third place. But before the competition was complete.

She was 'distraught'.

564 The correlation between ssris and school shootings may be something like 100%, but it's too small of a sample size to be meaningful. And there's a plausible explanation other than causation: mentally unwell kids are on ssris; mentally unwell kids commit acts of violence. In other words, mental illness, rather than the med used to treat it, is a likely explanation.

Why the hell wouldn't an entity like Twitter - most likely well staffed with H1b workers from other countries -- declare war on conservatives? They know damn well what they're doing. They're protecting the jobs they're taking from American tech workers.

568 I bought an old rolltop desk from good Lord it must be from the late 1800s. It's apart in my living room right now, taunting me. I've gotta Linseed oil the entire interior (the guts if you will) today or sooner and put it back together before a 500 .lb sideboard arrives to create a permanent imprint on my carpet.

Yes, it's time for covfefe.

I'd like to see the issue fought in a court of law with the best and brightest on both sides presenting evidence for and against. But this has happened so many times now, with no court case, that I suspect there's some preemptive payment by the drug companies to prevent that from ever happening. Which may be a good practice on their part.

So we'll never know. Life will go on, until the next time. Hands will be wrung again. Then life will go on again. L,R,R.

I think I'm gonna adopt a don't-give-a-fuck attitude.

577 Morning Joke just claimed people were "making fun" of the teenagers who are advocating for gun control, aka known as protesting by peoplecotting school attendance! Because we all know using school attendance as a form of protesting means they're super cereal about responsible gun ownership.

First question class:
Define "assault weapon" and explain the functional difference between this term and any other semi-automatic weapon.
