Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ratings for NBC's Olympics Continue to Stink on IceActually it's a combination of things, though I'm sure the little political statements from Olympians who don't even get a medal aren't helping. As Donny Two Scoops might say, "Me? I like Olympic heroes who crack the single-digits in rankings, not the ones who take tenth place."I can't believe the article cited the absence of Matt Lauer and Bob Costas as drawbacks. The article notes that the showdown between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding -- admittedly, an event that had more than just sport going for it-- drew nearly ten times as much as NBC's Saturday rating -- the Kerrigan/Harding face-off drew more than 125 million. By the way, NBC did not hesitate to offer a job to Adam Rippon as an analyst or whatever. I mean, he came in tenth place and all -- so scoop this talent up while he's Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Show us sports. Talk about the things we're not likely to know about. Shut up about the rest. Oh, and we don't care much about the athletes' backstory. Tell us about the interesting ones, gives us a thumbnail sketch of the rest, and show us the friggin' sports.

Reports have it that Adam Rippon turned down the job over a job title. He wanted to be designated Sports Anal-ist. Additionally, NBC had a clause in the contract stating how far the microphone had to be away from his mouth. They didn't want to televise any unfortunate equipment failures should Rippon decide to practice his ORALtor skills on the mic.

Stupid NBC. There are a lot of people still like me that haven't figured out how to use a VPN and get a host country IP to stream the Canadian or German sports feed to watch actual events; who would watch those events on air and not mind the commercial interruptions.
BUT we have gotten to a point where we mind very much NBC using the games as just another platform to push their politics and deviant culture, plus showing such a pitiful amount of the actual events, and doing so many 'back story of this athlete' segments so we are passing on watching the games at all. Show the sports which Americans have, historically, cared about regardless of who wins. Add in a few esoteric sports which you can explain to the audience hoping to build viewership for the future. Interview the winners, regardless of their national origin. Celebrate the achievement...the sport. You know, like the Olympics are supposed to do.

In fairness to NBC, Internet/technology has made it virtually impossible for NBC to hold events for showing on tape in prime time with any sense of surprise. This was not the case in 1994. The best we got of the Harding/Kerrigan evenst as it was unfolding live were stills like in the fights. That has contributed when the events are occurring in Asia. Laughing in Texas has a stunningly good common sense idea about Olympic coverage.
I actually really have an interest in a few America-obscure sports (nordic skiing), and have always enjoyed a few of the older winter events (ski jumping, bobsled, speed skating). As I've noted here for the past 2 weeks, the live feeds on the NBC website have been great. Maybe because of the events I watch, no stupid American commentators, no focus on the American participants. And some dramatic action. In recent days the live feeds have been a wasteland - curling, figure skating, boring teenagers-making-up-something-new-to-do-after-skiing events (most snowboard stuff, some of the new group ski stuff). There is a master calendar that shows the days all the events are happening - have not compared that to the live feed menu to see if NBC has switched its offerings. Confess I have been lazy, have not sought out any foreign broadcaster website live feeds - which should be rewarding, esp. for my interests. Maybe I'll do so today. 1. The whole wokeness thing is difficult to stomach. Both during the broadcast and in the commercials. If I don't immediately switch to mute at a commercial, I'm will hear something that irks the crap out of me. I don't watch much TV and to listen to all the shows that are marketed makes me want to vomit. 2. Speaking of not watching much TV, I only have the standard cable subscription. Which means that I only get to watch what's shown on the network channel. And I can't go online and watch anything, because NBC requires a more-than-standard cable subscription to watch online. 3. The outspoken athletes and the outspoken announcers immediately make me wish that they would just form their own country already. I miss my youth and watching Jim McKay on ABC. The women's figure skating on NBCSN last night was okay.
I mean if you managed to miss the hour of 'olympic ice' that preceded it that for some reason had the gay skater on the black chick ghostbuster doing skits for some reason while the professionals had to awkwardly pretend to be impressed. Anna Puma failed to mention when she posted that Sailor Moon routine a few months back that the gal performing it is actually the best in the world at the moment. Well, aside from an injury and her teammate scoring a half point higher. According to the coverage, the two of them had the highest scores ever recorded in competition, so it won't be like last time where the gold medalist was the least bad of gals who fell. *I don't know about the coverage for other skating events as I didn't watch. Americans traditionally have not done well in winter sports except maybe hockey and skating. Even then, the Soviets usually won in hockey until 1980. Snowboarding is a relatively new sport and we have done well there. I never really cared back in the day, I just used to like watching the competition. Not so much now. I don't mind women's single ice skating much, its pretty and like dancing if done well. And sometimes they are really creative, like one girl started out lying under a blanket "asleep" (and probably really cold). Girls like Oksana Baiyul used to really try to make their routines a show. Seemed to be: 20 minutes (interspersed with a ton of commercials, so it actually took 30) of talking heads spouting drivel about nothing. Then another 10 minutes (commercials made it 15) of interviews and backstory on athletes 10 minutes of actual sporting events (commercial cuts at odd times, breaking the flow of the event, plus tacked on another 5 minutes for them) And that was the hour of the Olympics that I saw. 10 minutes of sports, 20 minutes of commercials, 30 minutes of sheer blather. Actually it's a combination of things, though I'm sure the little political statements from Olympians who don't even get a medal aren't helping.
The biggest problem is that most of the winter Olympic sports seem to suck. The addition of all those asinine winter skateboard "style" events is annoying as all hell. Further, the coverage is awful. They don't bother to actually cover any of the events - like ... all the heats, from beginning to end without personal sob story bullshit thrown in. ANd NBC has a ton of extra channels to show this stuff on. But all they really cover on TV is the prime time crap - and prime time here certainly isn't prime time in South Korea. Lastly, NBC has taken up with the Eurotrash method of concentrating on the "national" competitors, as if anyone really gives a shit. The point of the Olympics - or any world championship, is to see the best competing and to see the best win. Who cares if the best is from America or somewhere else? Americans have never been into this asinine sort of faux-nationality. I mean, there are areas where nationality is very, very important, such as in sovereignty issues, war, political organization, commerce, ... but not sports. No nation is defined by how many friggin world championships it picks up. Live feeds via NBC website have had a fair amount of biathlon and other nordic events. And with the number of cameras, and production quality (sled cams, wire cams, drone cams) now brought to the table, they can be very fun to watch.
I love x-c skiing, have done it for decades (though not enough, and am geographically challenged for snow so don't get to do much), and have long wished I could have done biathlon. So watching these races is interesting (and torturous) for me. And while I simply have no interest in watching, never have, and the atmospherics have long been dominated by gay/theater vibes, figure skating is unbelievably athletic and difficult. I think I said this already but the 14 hour time difference between Korea and EST makes it perfect to show the games in real time, but they still tape delay everything. With a little bit of planning, they still would have time to do their little human interest stories. I've watched some of the games but the coverage has simply turned me off, so I turned them off. What others said just above.
Biathlon in particular is a very dramatic, watchable event. A unique combo of sprint, or medium-distance, racing - with precision shooting. The most aerobic exercise there is (more than swimming), combined with a discipline where breath control and calm are the keys. A fantastic athletic challenge. And the mechanics are key to the drama. One or two missed targets out of 20 can take the fastest skier to 10th place. In the best races, everything comes down to the 4th (last) shooting session. It's fantastic. These Olympics were wrong footed from the start. First the politicization and attacks against Trump and Pence alienated a sizable amount to possible viewers.
Second the announcers and personalities are all over the map. Some teams are great and others are terrible. Does NBC really believe that people watch Lapinski and Wier to see their outfits? Their commentary is awful. Much of the NBC commentary is one cliche after the next. Sure the US team has had some poorer performances, and we have a lower metal count, but ~ 24 US folks have come in 4th/5th/6h in many events. Politics aside, you know who was just about the most entertaining Olympian to watch? Teofilo Stevenson, the Cuban boxer. I never actually saw any of his fights LIVE as they were happening, only much later in films, but he was amazing. In many of his fights (not just the Olympics), his style was to wait, wait wait, never throwing a single punch, until the moment he spotted the slightest opening, then BOOM then other dude was down on the mat in an instant. He had many of these "one punch" fights. He wasn't the strongest heavyweight of all time, and maybe not even the fastest, but he definitely was the most patient.

@268 Good news, Koreans make some hella steak knives.
Many years ago I was a fair-to-middling target archer, and in college in those days you had to have so-many phys ed credits to prove sound mind/sound body theory. The whole system sucked: early in my career, you needed seniority for sign-ups, so I couldn't get fencing. Later, when I had seniority, they changed the system, and I still couldn't get fencing. So, after one POW quarter in volleyball because that's what was open, archery it was. Archery always sucks hind tit, and where they had for us to shoot was in the Ice Arena, just over the hockey barrier from Little Scotty Hamilton's daily workout. Two things, Scotty's blades could make it snow on the other side of that barrier, and he had no compunction at all about slamming into the boards at the end of a follow-through. It was hard to believe he didn't hurt himself, because he hit them HARD, but, of course, that would spoil your shot, and how did we know he was going to be a big star? Anyway at the other end of the arena they had a curling alley. We were a hockey power back then, had a load of Canucks in the mid-70's on scholarship, and nobody but nobody took this shit seriously. I had to have it explained to me how important Molson was to the sport, and then it looked like it might not be any screwier than bowling, as en excuse to drink.

418 Just had a good team pursuit speek skating race on. American commentator, but knowledgeable and good. Norwegians upset the favored Dutch.
My total speed skating experience consists of 1 hour on rented skates going around the oval at Lake Placid where Eric Heiden did his thing - but something about the power and geometry of speed skating that I've always liked. Posted by: rhomboid at February 21, 2018 03:31 PM (QDnY+) -------- The Long Track speed skating had to keep up with short tracks popularity so they had a least one mass start event. Believe the short track speed skaters are obliged to wear some kevlar-ish like tear resistant suit under their body suits, for protection from the blades.
Actually the NASCAR/short track comparison is appropriate in a funny way. It's plausible you'd watch it just for the crashes. The team events/relays in short track seem to feature crashed 75% of the time. So the skating is secondary - what matters is how the judges sort out the merits of the crash on the replay tape. Kind of stupid, but unavoidable I guess. Think "too many automatic reviews" problem with the NFL, but extended to even more of the game, and usually determining the winner. RIP Billy Graham. I just learned this:
"He insisted on racial integration for his revivals and crusades in 1953 and invited Martin Luther King Jr. to preach jointly at a revival in New York City in 1957. Graham bailed King out of jail in the 1960s when King was arrested in demonstrations." A lot of people jumped on the MLK bandwagon later. To do so in the 1950s was truly progressive. Her photo shows her to be outwardly pretty but beneath that has to be a rotting core. Do what you do best Lauren and conjure up some more sex articles for teens. Posted by: Cheri at February 21, 2018 04:02 PM (oiNtH) 594

We should just start the Moron Winter Olympics.

576 .but how is it beyond the pale to suggest that the kids who showed up out of nowhere to be spokes gun-grabbers at a variety of schools might be crisis actors?

You go to a rink and trash talk curlers and two things are guaranteed to happen:

It's just a shame the Venezuelan team couldn't make it to the Olympics. Their 1980 Honda Accord broke down.

Actually, that was one of the funnier episodes of the games. Vonn had just finished telling the NBC commentator that she was pretty sure she had the silver all sewn up and, not two minutes after that, Mowinkel skis her run and knocks Vonn down to third. THAT is why Vonn was crying so much.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at February 21, 2018 03:53 PM (pVGtq) Pfft, that's nothing. We've got people who forgot how to drive in snow since the last snowfall. Which was yesterday. Posted by: all doubt removed at February 21, 2018 04:05 PM (xj0OI) 604
In case people missed this:
"If you boo athletes because of their beliefs--if you, let's be clear here, root for American athletes to lose to foreign countries simply because of what they've said--well, you surrender any moral high ground. You don't get to call your political enemies "un-American." You don't get to claim that NFL players kneeling during the anthem are "disrespecting America." You don't get to call yourself a patriot. Party or country, make your choice." https://preview.tinyurl.com/y747g4vz Posted by: LizLem at February 21, 2018 04:05 PM (hvf9s) 605

These people are delusional and or ignorant. An athlete can run his mouth against at least 50% of his fellow countrymen but any push back is UnAmerican? All one can say is Fuck you. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 21, 2018 04:12 PM (L78vw) 608
Trying to find that video
Posted by: Patrick From Ohio at February 21, 2018 04:04 PM (dKiJG) I can't find the video anywhere. The only reference to it that I could find is in this article: https://tinyurl.com/y8896u7j and even he glossed over what actually happened: Italy's Goggia finished with a time of 1:39.22. Vonn was 0.47 seconds behind, which placed her second for a while until she was surpassed by Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel. Vonn said at the time that she was optimistic her time would stick so she could claim silver. Even though she knew she would not be winning gold, Vonn was proud of how she did. Mrs. Athens and I have been watching some of the ice skating. Get the faggot announcers off the air and actually show the routines and not 20+ min. of commercials and 2 min. of skating.
This Canadian last night was robbed of a Gold. She was perfect. Watched some 20-something snowboarders launch themselves into the air . . . cheered when they landed on their faces. Posted by: The Man from Athens at February 21, 2018 04:26 PM (8Ls/+) 615
