138 Coming from RI, I was always aware of Stuart's portraits. They often follow a pattern: dark (not black) background, a stern or at least non-smiling pose, and careful, detailed skin tones, hair, and clothing. They are formal, effective portraits of important, influential people, not a generic model in a casual setting. The paintings emphasize the person, not an artistic style.

Aside from the expected presidential portraits, I don't know if many portraits like Stuart's are painted these days. Perhaps photography has replaced them. Too bad, if so.

191 quantum, the portrait Dolly Madison saved is a different one.

I love Stuart. Before him the top portraitist of the era was Gainsborough, veddy British. Stuartwas the first mic drop of "anything you can do America can do too, suck it England." Father of American portraiture.

One of his best portraits is The Skater, check it out. Background is what elevates it.

Stuart was clever. His now iconic Washington portrait seen here became popular. So what did he do? Mass market it and made a ton of them to sell. Old fashioned way, painting each one of course, but still he knew the value and demand of what he had created, and in true capitalist American style acted accordingly. So there are a lot of Stuart Washingtons out there. I'm sure someone has a list of them all somewhere!

204 I wish there was more interest shown about Washington today. It isn't just a reason to have sales. The man was fascinating. Most people know about him roughly: general, first president, etc. Much more revealing is how he developed Mount Vernon, his business acumen, and his agricultural experiments. From what I've read, these were passions of his. Where are the news stories and PBS 'specials' about the man and his life? Guess we wouldn't want history and learning to get in the way of a day off or going to the store.

244 As a tactician, Washington apparently was fond of complicated multi-prong assaults that required very tight timing, usually at night, however he was also careful to have complete escape and evasion plans set up for each battle.

He has been criticized for being over complicated, but I do wonder if that was to make sure his entire assault, if they advanced in a single group, wouldn't be discovered and engaged, and in having columns popping up all over the place, the British would wind up feeling like they were playing whack-a-mole

Posted by: Kindltot at February 19, 2018 10:36 AM (2K6fY)

245 Does anybody besides me remember the following the last time the liberals got a president they didn't like (2004):

1. They apologized to the world that they couldn't elect the president they liked. They created a web page so that they could all put in their 2-cents about how sorry they were that they couldn't stop a president they didn't want to be president from getting elected.

2. That some on the left even suggested that because the rest of the world had to live with who we chose, that the rest of the world *should* have input into who we pick as president.

Does anybody remember these things?

Kind of demonstrates--at least to me--that the Dems aren't as against foreign nationals having an effect upon our elections as they currently are because again they got an "illegitimate president" (i.e. any president they didn't vote for).

Their "logic" tends to be special purpose in most situations.

Cruz and Lanza were clearly nutjobs, but what about the rest? A few years ago I read about an Irish family who immigrated here. The girl was bullied so mercilessly that she committed suicide. Never said a word to her parents. I wouldn't be too quick to say that all shooters are people that had some obvious severe psychotic disorder and ought to have been institutionalized.

So how about: declare that all frivolous NIH studies (why are lesbians fat, etc.) be defunded and concentrate on the following: decades ago, pre-Columbine there were no shootings. So what changed since then that's the most significant? Laws dealing with crazies? Cultural shifts? School policies? School teachers and their ideologies? Single parent families? There's a difference, and it's not access to guns, so the explanation must reside in something else.

If somebody is a minor, I definitely think it should be way easier to throw them in an institution and put them on some sort of path to stability before they are able to leave.

I'm not saying that solves everything, but something like that with the added stigma that maybe they get flagged for things in the future would be a decent start.

I just don't buy into the idea that there will suddenly be cattle cars of conservatives going into gulags if we become more aggressive about separating clearly crazy people from society.

Stuart didn't finish that portrait. He asked Washington if he could keep the unfinished work. Then he spent the rest of his life copying it for new Washington portraits because he was always in debt and there was a big market for his Washingtons.

Yeah, liberals illustrate Poe's law on a regular basis.

So they are not uniformly against the idea of foreign nationals having an effect on our election, just that Russia "cheated" and tried to have more than the other countries.

But how many really believe that if FaceBook had received money from the government of France to say "Don't elect Trump", that they would have taken it?

Mother in yoga attire and six or seven y.o. boy. Kid grabs a box of popcorn off shelf, and she sez, "Honey, we already have popcorn at home." Brat: "I WANT THIS ONE!!!" Yoga mom: "Okay, then."

Yesterday, dad in store with little princess. Princess: "I WANT CANDY!!!!" Dad, "But we have candy at home." *considers for nano second while brat works up tantrum* "Okay, then."

These brats are our future.

Son threw his tantrum in the grocery store near our house in ATL. I knew the manager, told him I'd be back in 15 minutes to finish shopping, jerked kid out of cart, and took him home and put him in time out chair facing wall for 10 minutes. Son was totally silent. Picked him up, put him back in car seat and said, "Don't you EVER behave that way again." And we went back to the store and finished shopping. Also, I never, ever let him run loose in a store, unlike today's out-of-control brats.

Ugh. These stupid, clueless, lazy parents. They can get the hell off my lawn, too.

Well you have to look at the Steele case. They recruited a British national who paid Russians to see if they had any dirt on Trump--much of which that they gave us was in fact "trollish" in nature. But after getting the FBI and NSA involved, in an investigation into the nature of how compromised Trump was, based on what Russian informants were paid to offer--no less than Hillary Clinton hinted at Trump's vulnerability on a nationally televised debate!

They tried to win a debate and election over foreign interference in our election! What was Steele's area of expertise? Russia. So what did they want from Steele to get any dirt Russia had on Trump--which he would PAY for.

This had a much bigger potential effect on our election than 2 million (over 4 years) in FaceBook ads and rallies of a few dozen people.

Apparently NBC offered him an announcer gig for the rest of the Olympics. Because of course they did. *rolls eyes* To his credit he turned it down, wants to finish his run as a athlete.

I don't know what NBC is smoking, to think having a polarized athlete as one of their on air commenters will be good for ratings. Fill that Bob Costas politicization of sports vacuum they so desperately need? A pox on them.

What's next? Well, MSNBC is reporting that the families of the shooting victims are headed for a "showdown" with Trump because it's all his fault.

First of all, I doubt they're a united front. (Although Broward County was where Hill was hoping to get enough votes to win Florida, so I guess it is a liberal county.)

Secondly, I have all the sympathy in the world for them. I can't imagine how much pain they must be in. But lashing out at Trump is misguided to say the least. The media scum are whipping up anger against Trump and don't give a shit that they are manipulating people who are hurting and looking for a scapegoat to do so.

He was not a perfect man, his temper being a good example. But he worked very, very hard at self mastery and self control, to keep his imperfections in check. One of the reasons I admire him.

Millennials could learn a lesson or two about that, instead of celebrating their imperfections and documenting them for all time on social media. Washington would not be amused.

Heh! When my oldest daughter was 15, we were at the mall and she was acting like a teenager; mouthing off and rolling her eyes when her mom told her to behave. I said something to the effect that if she continued to act like a brat, I'd spank her there in front of everybody. I may have said that in the drill instructor voice.

My FIL was pushing a cart in which his 3 year old great grandson was sitting, while my MIL was down another aisle searching for something. 3 year old kept demanding a toy despite being told no. Tantrum started to ensue, to which my Navy vet FIL simply flipped his fingers against said bawling brats lips and immediate silence began, interrupted by an occasional snuffle. MIL appeared, was puzzled at 3 year olds angry yet silent self. FIL just kept on pushing cart and smiling.
He said when retelling this story that 3 year old's problem was that everyone gave in to him and he needed retraining.
