As always, the chess/dress thread is an open thread, so no topic can be off-topic.

Easier Problem - White To Play (BWTC 47)

Hint: Force Black's king into the corner

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (625)

White has a bishop and a rook, but Black's advanced pawn looks mighty dangerous. Does White have to settle for a draw (e.g. 1.Rxg3 Kxg3, draw due to insufficient material), or is there some way he can salvage a win?

If 2...Qg7 then it's still mate with 3.Re8#.

5.Rf3 Kh3 6.Kf1 Kh2 7.Re3 Kh3 8.Kg1 Kh4 9.Kg2 and wins

2.Rf3+ Kg1
3.Be2 Kh2
4.Bf1 gxf1=Q

Not 4...g1=Q? 5.Rh3#

5.Rxf1 and wins

Hope to see you all again next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Chess is more of a sport than curling ever could be.

For the summer olympics they're adding warm-weather curling ... where teams try and strategically place spit marks on windows, with the sportier of the team starting by spitting on the window and the "wiper" tactically wiping in front as the spit falls towards the target.

It's a story about Normals going about their lives and how their lives prepared them to act heroically when the moment came. The fact that the guys played themselves in the movie was a special twist. I went back and reread the liberal movie reviews after seeing the movie.! They were even more hysterical after.

47 The one in the brown dress will do. Have her inspected, bathed, and brought to my fortified train car. And I'm still waiting for Brunette Dock Girl, from way back. Seared, seared into my memory.

So ICE did some workplace raids and inspections in LA. 122 businesses (unidentified) were served notices that they'll be audited to ensure they are not employing illegals.

So, along with the audits of 7-11s done recently in the east, it appears the great workplace enforcement monster is finally awakening. Still hoping to see ICE take the top 20 large employer violators into their sights, and go to them with an ultimatum and compliance schedule. Don't know the average size of businesses in LA that were served with inspection notices, but obviously it's much more efficient, and also will have a broader chilling/compliance effect, if Tysons Chicken, Hormel, and companies like that are forced to go illegal-free.

62 In the press release, ICE uses the term "sanctuary" when talking about cities like LA, where ICE is forced to detain targeted suspects out in the community, vs. the easier and safer surroundings of public buildings, jails, or courthouses.

Think I'm gonna send an email to ICE and suggest they add some language to disparage and (properly) demonize, a bit, the "sanctuary" crap. No reason to let lawless vandals pretend to be taking some sort of moral stand, even in the language used.

Posted by: Guy Mohawk at February 17, 2018 05:27 PM (r+sAi)

It depends on the problem. Some problems are 'White to mate in X moves' where x=2 or 3 or even more. Others, like the ones I post on this thread, are just 'White to play' which means find the best move for White, either a checkmate or perhaps winning material or getting a substantially better position.

It's not a particularly exciting sport, and you have to have graphic indicators on screen to tell you who's really ahead and who is close behind, if any, etc.

Surely they can find something more interesting to show.

NBC really sucks with its coverage. It's as if they never covered any sports before.

personally, there are only a few events I have any interest in for the winter olympics and they never really seem to be on TV. When they are, there is not much competition shown and lots of blather. I did watch the women's super-g last night ... I was puzzled when they declared Veith the gold medal winner even as there were more skiers racing. I had never really heard of such a thing. Then, I find out today that one of the later skiers beat her time. What a crock. The coverage of the world cup skiing in the weeks before the olympics were much much better. THey actually showed all the races and never declared anyone a winner before the event was over.

I make sure never to watch anything in skiing that has the word "style" in it (with the one exception of the half-pipe - though that is getting pretty friggin boring, to be honest). Ski events with "style" are nothing but stupid skate-punk shit on the slopes. Who cares about watching people ski over picnic tables and featuring "testicle grabs with a half-grin". It's friggin retarded and gay as hell. They might as well dress the ski/snowboarder stylists up like the figure skaters.

Not that long ago you'd see 10 min. of x-c skiing in a 10-day Olympics.

With the live feeds via website - which I've been pushing here for days - the great thing is, you can often see what you want, without much interruption, and without all the toxic idiocy of the broadcast packages.

And disagree completely about x-c coverage anyway. With the number of cameras they now have, the shorter races especially have become very watchable. And biathlon is very dramatic and interesting. To each their own.

Another NBC derp. There were 3 skiers left (out of 19) and, based on prior performance, they knew that none of them had a chance. Except the 19th skier, who never medaled in any event in her life, suddenly decided to ski the race of her life and won the gold. NBC was owned by a black swan. I don't think the American market likes any of those things - which is why the ratings are such shit. Americans tend to be more interested in the best performances than watching the number 4 American finish the race in 25th place.

The Europeans are the ones that are wholly obsessed with their national teams. This is the American networks trying to act European ... because the lefties think the Euros are cool.

141 I have done a fair bit of x-c skiing. It will get you in shape. The biathalon is a tough sport. Finnish Army filed work. I always tote a camera but haven't gone out for too many years. Either living places with no snow, or no money and reliable transport. Basic snow park permit here in WA is $40. at groomed trails, add $40. more plus you still need the $35. annual Discovery Pass. It's excessive.

142 Except for the hockey, where they seem to have American/Canadian commentators, don't think I've heard one yet. Because I only watch the feeds for nordic skiing and ski jumping.

Have seen exactly 2 minutes of "broadcast" product - which sufficed to have the young anchor beclown himself by equating one of the greatest feats in all Olympic history - the Norwegian Krueger's last-to-first victory in a nordic ski race - to the "first openly gay male figure skater" just showing up and doing his first practice. I'm not kidding, or exaggerating. That is how stupid, and degraded, things have become. Needless to say, I won't be watching another second of non-feed stuff from NBC.

Thanks, but I'm really not that interested in watching any more of the Olympics coverage. I watched a few events and that was enough for me. Of the events I like, I prefer to just watch the professional leagues (which we can now see pretty much whenever we want), as I mentioned with the world cup skiing events.

There was just a bit of a lull with normal programming last week that had me flipping to the olympic coverage a few times. But, I'm over it.

153 Though things have become more expensive in some places, one other great thing about x-c is the low cost - compared to alpine. Going back a few years, a single day of alpine would cost more than 3-4 days of cross country, at some Lake Tahoe area facilities, or even up in Quebec.

The contrast in other ways is just as dramatic. Loud bad music, flash, glitz, crowds - alpine skiing. Quiet, beautiful uncrowded trails and vistas, comfy warming huts - cross country.

Quebec City remains my favorite. Hundreds of kilometers of groomed trails in the area, always plenty of snow and usually great conditions, and then after a day of exertion, enjoying the excellent food in the city.

161 I've had interesting talks with the just-out-of-college Igno-Daughter. Last night the Florida shooting came up and she said that assault rifles needed to banned. I said they're nothing more than a second-rate hunting rifle that just look badass. That when I went to shoot up a kindergarten I'd just use a pair of Glocks. Much more effective and concealable.

213 On things like grilled flank steak, chimichurri and a chipotle cream sauce are excellent. Flank is served cut thin, across the grain, and I do that an then drizzle chimichurri up/down one side, and the chipotle cream sauce the other side. Looks, and tastes, very good.

Seems a good general rule is the less premium cuts often pair very well with some sauce. But herbed butter atop a nicer cut, just as it's finishing - that can hardly go wrong either.

247 I dont know who came up with the 1940's jelly roll hair do but it probably started as a practical joke.

Anyone else remember the Leave It to Beaver episode where Wally got a jelly roll do?

248 Correction, in every case it is rook, king, and bishop vs king after either rook g2 check or king e3.
It would be rook and king vs king if pawn fails to promote.

You can bet that their gated compounds are more than ten miles from anyone that can't afford to pay for flu vaccine!

Am I the only one who thinks these flu strains that are killing people is the rsult of all the illegal diversity we let in this country?

261 I can't imagine the atmosphere in world as the Spanish Flu was killing thousands every day and WW1 was raging away. Makes one appreciate the time we live in right now even when it sucks.

262 A lot of people who have gotten the flu this year WERE vaccinated. We've had some weird strains.

No, that can't possibly be the reason because all cultures, even the ones that thrive in shithole countries*, are exactly equal!

267 I like the top photo. That's almost identical to my favorite chess set that I have, only bigger.

I'm not sure if I've ever played an actual game in meatspace with it. Sad.

272 It's fine that the first chess puzzle is easy, but why is it for almost every puzzle the answer starts with sacrificing the queen? It's become my go to first choice answer, and I solve the puzzle immediately.
