Thread before the Gardening Thread: The Liberal Revolt Against the Masses [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

obamacool2.jpg

Happy Saturday, Horde. I thought that about now would be a good time to get away from the news for a little history. The Assistant Village Idiot put up a post about an interview with Fred Siegel in Spiked Review. It is primarily about the rise of elitism within liberalism since the 1920s in America.

I didn't know much about Siegel. He was an advisor to Rudy Giuliani (after working for Democrats). He is now at the Manhattan Institute and writes at the New York Post, among other places. In 2013, he wrote a book titled The revolt against the masses: how liberalism has undermined the middle class.

He doesn't seem to be a big Trump fan, but he also thinks "The Resistance" is way off base. Anyway, interesting interview. Lots of bits of history that I didn't know. But since I live in the non-liberal part of California, this little vignette from the interview caught my eye:

Let me tell you about what happened at a party in California I went to on New Year's Eve. A lot of interesting, nice people were there. They asked me what I'm interested in, blah, blah, blah, and I would tell them, 'You know, I'm in favour of California resisting Trump. And more than that, I want California to secede.' And they look at me like I'm crazy. They say, 'Why would you, a guy from Brooklyn, want us to secede?'. 'Well', I say, 'you are definitely, I think we can all see, smarter and more virtuous than the rest of the country. You should be the people to take on Kim Jong Un.' When I say that, people literally slink away. . .

Heh.

Siegel places the beginning of liberalism in the 1920s with the formation of the ACLU. He sees HL Mencken as an inspiration to future liberals, although Mencken did not define himself as a liberal. He notes arguments for multiculturalism in The New Republic a hundred years ago. There are some interesting details and views about later eras, too. You might like to read it.

Obama was a child of the 1960s. He represented the institutionalisation of a liberalism that had gone off the rails - and he further pushed it off the rails.

Art History and Our Media

Siegel thinks the culture of the 1950s, when people where listening to symphonies and reading good books, gets a bad rap in our media.

Moving to this week, in its Critic's Notebook, the New York Times somehow failed to mention that the artist Obama chose to paint his official portrait had a history of painting black women holding the heads of decapitated white women. The critic did say that the artist had been busy "creating the collective image of a global black aristocracy".

Can't get more elite than an aristocracy.

So, are the masses back in those leaves somewhere?

Hope you have a good weekend.

5 The Revolt of the Masses is an excellent book. I've read it twice, and will read it again. The bottom line is that humanity hasn't changed over the millenia. It's always "I'm better than you, and should get to run your life". The problem is that being good at one thing doesn't make you good in other things. An even bigger problem is when you aren't good at anything, because you lack the ability, or more frequently, the drive. That's how you end up with Obama in a sea of poison ivy.

With the demise of smoking areas in airports. Can't we now get pot smoking lounges? That seems to be okay with most everyone now, maybe a pot smoking area in the back of the planes....got to get updated in whats allowed now!

43 6 Sitting here in Phoenix now waiting for my connection to JFK. Oh by the way, did I mention that I hate waiting in airports."

Phoenix has got a damned nice one now - I remember back in the 60's, when it was still just a terminal left over from the WW2 era transit station for military cross country flights.

Worst - absolute worst - wait I ever had was in Albuquerque, after a Fiesta Bowl I went to. I flew out very late on Jan 2nd, knew I would have about a 5 hour wait in the terminal for my connecting flight to DFW - but no one told me, Albuquerque terminals close at midnight, and here were about 15 of us, at the gate, all booked on the next flight in 5 hours, and here comes Airport Security to boot us all out and tell us we had to go sit in the main lobby til 5 am when then they re-opened. And it had no heat.

I remember pulling together some chairs which didn't really work and pulling an old coat over my face from my bag to try and sleep, and then when the first workers started filtering in at 5, I'm sure they all thought I was some homeless bum that had just straggled in out of the cold, since that's what I looked like.

and as soon as I got home after laying all night in a cold cold terminal, i came down with terrible bronchitis that lasted 6 weeks. Yeah, that trip still pisses me off. No More Connecting Flights!!!

60 Good observation about the modern upper class left deriving from Mencken - I like to quote Mencken, I even like to read him in short spurts, and we have a Mencken quote on top of this blog - BUT - even those of us who like him should never let ourselves forget that deep down, Mencken hated People, and he especially hated Common People. Mencken hated America, he did, and his only justification was that he hated every other country too. Mencken hated blacks, and his only justification was that he hated arabs and chinese and everyone other ethnic group on the world just as much. There's plenty of writings of his that would make David Duke blush.

He hated everyone, and never tired of verbalizing that hatred. When someone asked him "why do you live in the US if you hate it so much?" Mencken simply replied "Why do men go to zoos?"

He is the perfect examplar of the snotty left's current mindset. And just like him, they despise real democracy, and they hate the United States.

I remember for a while in Marin County, north of San Fran, it was illegal to smoke tobacco cigarettes in one side of a duplex, because second hand smoke might seep through the walls and annoy the nosy neighbor. But at the SAME TIME marijuana was totally decriminalized in that county, and people weren't allowed to make any complaint calls about that at all.

So I guess you could smoke as many cigarettes as you wanted as long as you covered up the smell by burning some mary jane at the same time.

Maybe i was like that at some time. I dont' really remember. But I never thought that bad things happening to me as the end of it ad some rally bad shit happened. Some of my on doing I realize in hindsight and well others because life is a crapshoot. "This too shall end". Dont get too comfortable either. "Be nice to the people on the way up because the the same people you meet on the way down." on and on. We can take action, then God takes over. When i think of all the the moves I made in life to finally be in the right place to meet Heidi, i realize Gods hand in all we do. I went to several different states, kissed a lot of toads and took a job at a place where she would one day fly into Tampa from MN. Gees. Amazing. And I can go on and on. 82 The Victim mindset is incredibly self destructive, and it is a crime the way our educational establishment and media are pushing so many young people into that today.

When you have a healthy mindset, and something goes wrong, you think "hmm, maybe I did something wrong that I can change, let me modify my behavior and see if I get better results."

when you have a Victim's mindset and something, anything, bad happens to you, you say to yourself "OHMIGOD, they did that because they were OUT TO GET ME!!! and I want REVENGE!!! and I will not change my behavior ONE TINY BIT because that means THEY WOULD WIN!!!"

and it guarantees that the person believing that will double down on self destructive behavior every chance they get. Kinda like the entire dem party is doing today.

90 I remember so-called 1950's "Middle Brow" culture with great fondness.

The high point of it to me was the condensed version in Readers' Digest of a witty book about the cognoscenti accompanying a cultural-exchange troupe performing Porgy and Bess in Soviet Union. Absolutely scathing indictment of everything about communist life, and cute little vignettes about all the professional-arts types. Ready?

I remember never really liking DC except for, IIRC, a daughter company named Vertigo (and I might be remembering that association totally incorrectly) and some of the Batman stuff at the time like "A Death in the Family."

Did everyone sort of either choose Marvel or DC, or was it just me?

119 You guys might appreciate this:

My 14 year old just played a CYO basketball game and his team won for the first time this year. They were on fire against a better, taller team, and they had no subs. It was a high scoring game. My husband was keeping score. One of the boys (one of my favorites) was doing great. After the game, while we were taking pictures, they came over and said, "Mr. Dagny, you were keeping score, do you remember how many points I had?"

Without missing a beat, my husband said, "6." The whole team looked confused. My husband said, "Oh, I'm a socialist, so since your teammates didn't score as many as you, I redistributed your points so that everyone had the same number." He did eventually tell him his "capitalist" number.

132 Disney, the studio behind Black Panther, has also faced pressure as a petition urges the studio to donate 25 percent of Black Panther's profits to the black community.

This week, actress Vivica A. Fox expressed support for the petition, which has received over 6,000 signatures, and accuses the Walt Disney Company and Marvel of exploiting the black community through specific marketing in an attempt to make money.

========

Disney uses marketing in order to try to trick people into seeing their crappy movies so that they can make a profit! Horrible! They'd never resort to that trick with whites I'll bet, only blacks. It's like slavery never ended.

Here's a thought: what if the director, screenwriters, and actors all worked gratis. Then the studio could afford to give black audiences a discount. No need for a rebate "donating 25% to the black community" which probably means the money will go into some sleazy Clintonesque organization and never be seen by the actual community.

A stoner?? Forget it. Problem is, that their entire philosophy is based on a number of flawed premises.

1. That we are not animals. That intellect can completely overcome a couple million years of evolution.

2. That you can reprogram people away from natural inclinations without consequence...

3. That Social Pressure can be used to completely control people... and there will be no backlash.

4. That Man is an inherently rational creature.. and they are the most rational, ergo should be in charge.

These premises are all flawed at an existential level... yet because they have managed to force their philosophy onto us... most people are unhappy.

Just like when you base a Geometric Proof on a flawed premise... it can look good but be wrong...

A Society based on flawed premises will fail, because the people are unhappy...

It was intentionally taken because the term "Socialism" was poorly considered by Americans in the 1800s.
When there was a pushback on this, the actual liberals, the classic or Jeffersonians were branded rugged individuals and unconcerned about the fate of other, less capable members of society.

Socialism at its roots is an attempt to address economic issues by changing society so that inequality can be automatically resolved (or ignored).
It moved from economic inequality to social inequality in the last 50 years, and appears to be moving on to some bizarre 'equality of experience' mindset.

(Granted, that is because it has proven incapable of reaching economic or social equality in the last 150 years, except for the equality found in a mass grave)

210 Siegel is interesting with broad scope, but still an old Democrat, so mostly "commie" when it comes down to it. imo Good read though. thx

I used to think the "crack in time" was in the 60's, especially with JFK, MLK and Vietnam, with the Beatles pushing the drug culture and others going even more acid trip Woodstock open sex commie.

But JFK was killed after promising to take down the (already in control) CIA and the secret society of criminals that ran media and more. Orwell, himself a socialist of the less aggressive sort as I understand it, wrote clearly (1984) of the more forceful socialist (communist) shortly after WW2.

But maybe we should look back at least another century to the 1860s with Lincoln trampling state rights and our constitution after he had read up on the socialist movement/revolution in Europe around 1848. In many ways we should be rethinkin' Lincoln.

There is an arrogance of the NY/DC coastal elite, but the root is raw greed and criminal syndicates. Their sales pitch to the rank and file is to assure the "liberal" sheep they are superior to the "deplorable and irredeemable", superior to we "xenophobic racists" that are patriots.

It's a cheap trick, a pat on the head before the slaughter. The left never wins the white vote nationally, they win every demo' of the "minorities" by always promising to steal from (racist, patriarchal, unfairly rich) whitey and give to the depraved and deprived -- the protected race, ethnicity, whatever agitprop group is at hand.

It has ALWAYS been Democrats that play to the philistines' most base instincts, as Obama's artist said "it is a play on the kill whitey thing". Our nation is a living people with heritage, not an academic theory of control.

216 Although I think Siegel yuuuugely inflates the influence of Mencken on modern elitism, it is useful to remember that hatred of the average man is not confined to the conventional Left.

Siegel notes that Mencken fell out of favor with Progressives when he turned on FDR and the New Deal.
But in the second half of the 20th century he (his zombie, i.e.) enjoyed a big resurgence in popularity among --- libertarians.

Long before the Libertarians devolved into a 2-issue party --- drugs and open borders --- there was something "off" about them. Their criticism of Progressive statism has been excellent, but they have always emitted a snotty odor.

I think that many libertarians, like leftists, have contempt for organic, ancient customs and tradition, and especially for (good) religion. Like leftists, they tend to see the world from a faculty-lounge perspective that often has no relation to the way that human beings actually operate in the world.

217 I do get tired of the use of the word "liberalism" where "Progressivism" is more accurate. Siegel notes that modern "liberalism" is exceedingly illiberal but doesn't address the problem of terminology.

Why do we persist in using the term? How in the world did 19th century liberalism, small L libertarianism, morph into its modern version? Did it really morph or was it just discarded and then picked up by the enemies of statism? Complex subject.

Posted by: Margarita DeVille at February 17, 2018 12:29 PM (0jtPF)

========

I'm guessing they just hijacked the term, the way they hijack institutions - it seems to be how they work. That said, it may be best just to acknowledge the term is lost and use it accordingly. I don't think people are for the most part interested in etymology - they hear "liberal" and they know it's "big government, pro-gay, pro-abortion, open borders". Of course, there's the Dalrymple quote from a few days ago. How much do you allow them to bully you in regards to limiting your use of language?

1) He puts sperms in all his paintings, like an 'Easter egg" to hunt for
2) He has a studio in China where workers help put out his works -- probably doing the photoshopped backgrounds
3) The quote ace noted a few days ago about "kill whitey"
4) His schtick of reposing old paintings with black people

Its a nice roundup of the oddities

It's risible and sad in the same way, much like Al Sharpton's assertions that Africans invented mathematics that was stolen by "those Greek homos," after which the Africans inexplicably forgot everything they'd invented.

The gentrification thing really irritates me. Whites moving into a ghetto, cleaning it up, improving property values, reducing crime, generally making it a nicer place to live - all bad. Very bad.

Blacks moving into a white neighborhood to get away from the toxic atmosphere of the ghetto, the squalor, the litter, the crime - that's A-OK.

Yet the result of the two is the same, an integrated neighborhood, just reached from opposite poles. How can anyone attack one and justify the other?

284 Having said that, I suspect that the bruthas will take it as African myth making anyway, so my take, while ignorant, probably still has some validity.

Yeah and people will keep treating it as a Culturally Relevant Historical Moment (c) but its just a fun and well-acted movie, from what I've read and heard.

There are definitely some ethical issues with a super-advanced high tech nation ignoring the horrors around it, but apparently the entire film's plot is about how Wakanda should use its tech. The bad guy wants to arm up black people so they can violently revolt against the world, and the hero wants to use the tech to help cure diseases, feed people, etc.

Oh, and "Black Panther" as a character was introduced in July 1966 in New York City, 3 months before the political party organization was created by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California. I suppose its conceivable that somehow Jewish writer Stan Lee and Jewish artist Jack Kirby could somehow have heard of the radical Californians working on the foundation of the group but its unlikely to an extreme.

Neither really make sense: black panthers are South American.

I thought that, too. Hell, I've been terrified to be at the top of a 20 foot ladder.

And as usual, liberals don't think things through. First, as you point out, a 40 foot ladder is no joke. Second, as I pointed out, getting down on the other side is no joke, either.

But last, but not least, let's say some people do manage to do all this. How many people have the stones to do all that? OK, so a few intrepid 20-something year old guys manage to do it. What are they, maybe 0.01% of the people crossing over now?

Exactly.

Plus, suppose you have two. How do you get the second one to the other side? Hmmm.

You're on top of a 40 foot wall. A 40 foot ladder is one side. How do someone get the second (very heavy) ladder up to you so you can maneuver it over to the other side while you are perched precariously on the rounded top of the wall?

Probably doable, but no mean feat. I certainly wouldn't want to try it.

Sure, you could probably tie a rope to the first ladder and rappel down the other side, but let's face it: that takes training, and no small amount of cojones to do.

Some people will think they crossed the border, but in fact they will have entered a holodeck simulating East Saint Louis, Illinois. They'll tell everyone they know in the real world what a poop-hole America is and the government of Mexico will pay for the force field to protect its more curious and adventurous citizens. Win-win, all the way around. And I get a food replicator in my kitchen and will eat all the taco pizza I want.

I was "training" on a job on a jack-up rig in Mobile Bay. Had to go up to the crown blocks of the derrick, and set up a depth encoder on the fast wheel. So I lash the encoder, a heavy, ungainly hunk of iron, to my back, stuff my pockets with U-bolts and nuts and washers, a Crescent wrench on a lanyard, hitch onto the climbing assist line, and head up the stick.

Got 'er all done; encoder is sending signals as it should. (Oh, I was dragging about 300 feet of four-conductor cab-tire cord, too.) Go to climb down, and the climbing-assist line is stuck. I jerked on it a few times, and then decided, "maybe that's no such a good idea". Climbed down without the assist. No fall-arrest line in those days, either. Go tell the assistant floor boss what happened. "Oh, you can't use the climbing assist all the way to the crown. The weight goes over the deck railing and hangs up. Climb back up there, and holler when you get to the top, and I will free the weight up for you."
So that's what I did. It's a long climb, especially hanging onto the ladder rungs with all 5 appendages.

When I was a kid we had a tiny 5" under-the-cabinet TV made by Black & Decker that was mounted on a swivel.

I get the notion behind it, and I have no real problem with it the same way that good looking actresses will get guys to go see a movie with the girlfriend, but the kung fu aspect was really weird. Couldn't be a sniper or regular old space guy piloting a ship. Had to be a blind space kung fu master.

Yeah, probably has nothing to do with law enforcement up to and including the FBI dropping the ball every chance they got.

This is like the politicians discussing releasing the RUSSIA!!! memo. You're not protecting me with those decisions, you bunch of jerks.

443 Yeah, you can make fun of me the whole way up the ladder as I load stuff into the bucket from the ground.

That's some serious sh*t right there. I'd bet falling kills more people than homicides every year.

Heck, I'd bet one year of extremely specific "falling from ladders" kills more people than total deaths from mass shootings since the 80s.

445 the thing to consider is that a 1 in 100, even 1 in 1000 chance of death or permanent disability is a bad risk. use the safety harness ... or just never leave the house. lol

449 I help build a 199ft tower once. Two people on the tower and one on the ground. We used a gin pole to raise each section to be bolted on the last section. Guyed at 50, 100, and 180 ft. The most horrifying thing for me was leg and foot cramps and not the height. Well, maybe the height when my legs cramped up. We used climbing belts and tie offs so Safety.

Yes, we're bracing for rain, then snow, then flooding here in the PNW as well. Yay.

I've been watching several of the videos after that linked above, and I was wondering about legs cramps.

One of the videos says that those guys typically climb AT NIGHT, and do so all year 'round.

Those guys must have balls the size of coconuts.

452 >>I've been watching several of the videos after that linked above, and I was wondering about legs cramps.

I went out and bought steel shanked boots for the project. I guess they helped but, over the course of 2 straight days I guess the leg muscles just had enough. I did this at least 20 years ago. Would I 'volunteer' to do this again? No way in He77.

453 funny but one guy that had his cows at my place, and another that plants for me ... both used to climb up and trim trees for power companies, one guy was doing it at 300 pounds. Other guy got shocked once and fell and hurt ... stays away from all climbing and electrical now.

Climbing tied to something steel is one thing, but jumping around in trees with just a rope around said tree with swinging chainsaw ... those guys seem a little crazy.

But yes, chainsaw on ladder for normal people is a bad idea. I've cut lotsa 10" limbs with my little lithium battery pole saw ... "vista pruning" ... cut the limbs below 18' or so to keep your view.
