"Under the Full Moon The Small Ones Will Know Terror:" FBI Busts Twin Brothers For Explosives, Possible Plot to Bomb School

Well, they did follow up and investigate this tip, and probably averted a lot of needless deaths.

This NY Post article has additional details.

In a very strange sequence of events...

* One brother, Christian Toro, was reported to be having an "inappropriate relationship" with an underage student at a charter school where he worked.

* The student called in a threat to the school (and was later arrested). Possibly this was some kind of retaliation against Toro for the "inappropriate relationship."

* Toro resigned from the school shortly thereafter.

* Toro was arrested for statutory rape on January 5.

* I think at this point Toro's computer was seized, where investigators found bomb-making instructions as well as the chilling note, "Under the full moon the small ones will know terror."

* The computer also mentioned and "operation flash," which I assume police feared would be a bombing campaign (though I don't think they've said that or proven that).

* They began investigating both Toro and his twin brother Tyler on suspicion of bomb-making.

* They found the two brothers had been stockpiling explosives since October, and had had paid underage students (I assume this mean's Christian Toro's own students, but the article doesn't specify) to break down fireworks to extract the more serious explosive powders from them.

* They were found in possession of iron oxide and aluminium powder, which combine to form thermite.

* A diary was found containing the messages, "WE ARE TWIN TOROS STRIKE US NOW" and "WE WILL RETURN WITH NANO THERMITE."

* However, looking up thermite, it does not appear to be an actual explosive, but instead a compound that burns at a high heat and thus can be used for welding or cutting metal. Whether they had additional explosives, I don't know, and I don't know what they were planning to do with the thermite. Wikipedia does mention that thermite is used in incendiary bombs, to set things on fire. I guess if you put an explosive core in the middle of thermite, you would blow the intensely-hot-burning thermite on to any victims on the blast area.

The twin brothers pled "not guilty" to the various bomb-making charges today. Authorities say they had not picked targets or assembled any actual bombs yet.

4 Drudge has the huge red headline:

DC ROCKED: MUELLER INDICTS 13 RUSSIANS

But when you look at the linked article, it says this:

"Special counsel Mueller: Russians conducted 'information warfare' against US during election to help Donald Trump win.

Special counsel Robert Mueller said a grand jury had indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The defendants allegedly conducted "information warfare" against the United States election process to help Donald Trump win.

The defendants used fake American personas, social media platforms, and other Internet media to advance their scheme, according to an indictment."

Excuse me for my ignorance, but:

How is any of this a crime?

Fake persona on the internet? Ummm, aren't, like, 80% of all Internet personas "fake," as in pseudonymous? ("Ace of Spades," "zombie," etc.?)

Posting crazy shit online that may or may not be true?

Ummm, isn't about 80% of the stuff on the internet crazy shit that may or may not be true???

Foreign countries trying to influence elections?

Ummm, didn't Obama set up and finance all sorts of organizations to unseat Netanyahu in Israel? Hasn't the CIA meddled in every election worldwide since 1954? Don't the Russians have dozens of goofy "news outlets?"

How is any of this unusual, much less illegal?

Seriously, can't someone answer?

What is the first FBI Press Conference results about?

Why?

Is it just to hide their statement of dropping the ball on FL shooter?

I don't get it.

They say they are still investigating. If they say Trump did not know about Russian interference, what is left of the original case? Nothing.

106 62 Mueller Indicts 13 Russian Nationals Involved In Election Interference

In a press briefing held shortly after the indictment was announced, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said that ...

there was no allegation in the indictment that "any American" -- including members of the Trump campaign -- "was a knowing participant in the alleged unlawful activity."

Seriously, can't someone answer?
..............
I was just listening to Rosenstein's news conference on this..

These guys came to America in 2014 and bought space on US based servers.. they set up a VPN to it and created hundreds of fake social media accounts.

The funny thing is.. Rosenstein said they were posting pro-Trump stuff as well as anti-Trump stuff.

On the same day in NYC, one fake political action group organized a rally to support Trump.. another political action group organized an anti-Trump rally also in NYC that same day.

So.. what they were basically doing was trying to cause chaos...

He said they did not affect the outcome of any elections.

260 I messed with thermite, as a yute. It's not explosive, and it is pretty hard to ignite it. If it were incorporated into an explosive bomb, it would likely be scattered without igniting.

The thermite reaction relies upon the compound being in a compact mass so that the heat evolved ignites more of the stuff. You could certainly use it to start a building fire, and not much will put it out, once it's going good, since the reaction is self-contained, and needs no oxygen from the air.

Each investigation had a different charter, and was focused on different issues. Mueller's was a broad look at Russian interference in the election and any potential collusion.

The OIG investigation, which began months before Mueller's, had a different, very specific mission and that is where we will see that collusion between Hillary, Fusion, the FBI, DOJ, CIA, State and perhaps others.

Without paying money I'm not sure how to get a fake SMS number to pass this. Or the effort required in figuring it out.

It's orders of magnitude bigger because of both the scope of the investigation and the sheer number of people focused on the investigation and the impact.

Horowitz has over 500 lawyers and investigators in his office and a very large number of them have been focused on this investigation for over a year.

Virtually every single thing we currently know about what Hillary and the FBI/DOJ did has been as a result of his investigation and the documents from that investigation he started giving to Congress in December and the information he provided to the FBI and DOJ that ousted at least 8 senior people.

This investigation is focused largely but not exclusively on collusion by Americans and that is going to make the impact enormous.

It may be a low bar but Horowitz is going to clear it by a mile.

I doubt that's changed, despite the transition to pure realpolitik at the Kremlin.

So gaming out "who do the Russians prefer?" is almost entirely an exercise in people applying *their own* standards and preferences and legitimizing them in terms of the deficiencies of those they oppose. The intel community's purported assessment that the Kremlin clearly preferred Trump isn't implausible, but the substantive credibility of that community is not high.

However, black powder is also legally obtainable.

I know the Tsnaernev brothers (sp, I'm sure) used the black powder from fireworks to make their pressure cooker bombs, so it's out there as a thing people do. (you could also use match tips, too, I guess.)

I don't think thermite would act like willy pete. Thermite needs to stay clumped up to burn. Blasting it out like a dust cloud wouldn't ignite it.
Posted by: rickb223 at February 16, 2018 02:12 PM (FxM6p)

If the thermite filler was powder form and there was a burster charge inside that detonates after the thermite filler is ignited, you'd have something like a hotter version of a fireworks sparkler fountain.

Very short range target effect. Very unpleasant if within range though. Like rickb23 says, the unignited filler gets dispersed and remains unlit.

Posted by: Hillvalley Debate Coach at February 16, 2018 02:46 PM (ECDXs)

a) I'm not accepting the premise that millions of Russian internet bots even exist, much less are run by the russian govt, much less were deployed during the US election, since if any of that were true, I think we would have seen something resembling evidence by this point.

b) Even if, arguendo, we accept all of that as true, I have yet to see any semblance of evidence that there was any "fake news" pre-election that swayed anyones beliefs.

c) even if, arguendo, we accept that there was, I have not seen anything to suggest that the russians would want to sway people to a pro-trump, anti-hillary viewpoint.

...and folks, by the way, this is how the left wins -- we are already having this conversion from the left's premises (russians hacked election to help trump) despite there being ZERO evidence that any of those assertions are even close to true.

They spend 1.5 million a month, to TROLL... but did it both for and against Hillary... depending on when and who was supposed to win...

And no link to actual RUSSIAN government funding of this...

So, they spent money just to try to.... what?

Sow chaos. The attack was on the PROCESS, not any particular candidate. Unfortunately, the left decided to use an attack on America to attack Trump. They're funny that way.

I keep going back to this because it really seems accurate.

On the very first day of the Senate Intel Committee hearings, the very first hearing by any committee in this investigation, in addition to Bill Browder and other testifying about Fusion GPS they had 3 longtime Russiophiles to talk about Russia's agenda.

They stated unequivocally that Russia's goal in meddling in our elections which has been going on since the end of WWII they don't pick candidates. Their goal is to cause confusion and get Americans fighting amongst themselves to prove that democracy itself is a failure.

That was their goal and frankly they were pretty successful. They didn't create the division but they sure did help exacerbate it.

514 Does sand work to douse thermite? That was the method for most slightly crazy chemicals in labs.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 16, 2018 02:26 PM (ycWCI)

Sand works to douse magnesium incendiaries, because they rely upon oxygen from the air (or from water). Won't work on thermite, because the reaction is self-contained.
The thermite reaction goes really fast. Light it, it begins to glow, throws off a few sparks, and then drops a blob of white-hot molten iron, and that is what does the damage as an incendiary. It can eat its way through several floors of a wooden structure, starting fires as it goes.
