Mitt Romney Announces Senate Bid

I guess he won't be worse than Orin hosta, but it sure seems that a very Republican and conservative state should be putting up senators with more backbone.

Okay this is a bullshit post and I get that but whatever. It's technically news. Sort of.

Thomas, a conservative appointed to the bench in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, recalled recently being with a young black woman in Kansas who told him, Im really tired of having to play the role of being black. I just want to go to school.

Reminder #2,359 that a Big Red Wave is needed in the Senate (bigger than 1980) - and even more daunting, that it be a wave of useful GOP, not useless/harmful types.

Romney will be fine on financial and economic stuff, of course, probably ditto on foreign policy, but on key issues like rule of law (illegal immigration, sanctuary lawlessness, etc) - harmful, possibly disastrously so, unless he's surrounded by enough serious GOP to socially coerce him. I think he will be very, very malleable.

74 Okay, okay...I know you all have been wondering, so, here it is, the Utah! state song, because, Utah!:

Utah! People working together
Utah! What a great place to be.
Blessed from Heaven above.
It's the land that we love.
This is the place!

Utah! With its mountains and valleys.
Utah! With its canyons and streams.
You can go anywhere.
But there's none that compare.
This is the place!

It was Brigham Young who led the pioneers across the plains.
They suffered with the trials they had to face.
With faith they kept on going till they reached the Great Salt Lake
Here they heard the words, "This is the place!"

Utah! With its focus on family,
Utah! Helps each child to succeed.
People care how they live.
Each has so much to give.
This is the place!

Utah! Getting bigger and better.
Utah! Always leading the way.
New technology's here...
Growing faster each year.
This is the place!

There is beauty in the snow-capped mountains, in the lakes and streams.
There are valleys filled with farms and orchards too.
The spirit of its people shows in everything they do.
Utah is the place where dreams come true.

Utah! With its pioneer spirit.
Utah! What a great legacy!
Blessed from Heaven above.
It's the land that we love.
This is the place

Utah! Utah! Utah!
This is the place!

Considering that Trump asked Hatch to stay and not retire, knowing that Romney was waiting to jump into Hatch's Senate seat is all you need to know regarding Romney's viewpoint about the Trump agenda.
Wait until he finds out, as Cruz did, that all Senators do is spend time on their reelection campaigns and only about 5% of their time is spent on issues.(Quote from Cruz, who said he was stunned when he first was elected Senator and witnessed all the other Senators going to fund raiser after fund raiser and election committee meetings)

105 I know you all have been wondering, so, here it is, the Utah! state song

Reminds me of the Monty Python song Finland:

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
It's the country for me.

You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.

You're so sadly neglected,
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.

Finland has it all...

But it's not really a matter of political preference or style - FFS, the country is in very bad shape, Trump may be the last real chance for a sharp course correction, and we have states like UT sending people like Mitt to DC. It's a damn close-run thing as it is - failing, in some ways, actually. Trump is crippled by the Senate GOP. That doesn't change via personnel changes, I'd like to see the plausible game plan for any real or sustainable progress in Trump's first term.

No, actually. Feel free to read their open statement here:
https://preview.tinyurl.com/y7cw9v9j

As a matter of policy, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discourages its members from entering any country without legal documentation, and from deliberately overstaying legal travel visas.

...

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is concerned that any state legislation that only contains enforcement provisions is likely to fall short of the high moral standard of treating each other as children of God.

The Church supports an approach where undocumented immigrants are allowed to square themselves with the law and continue to work without this necessarily leading to citizenship.

The answer was as a plain as looking at an electoral map and seeing that if you could pump up white non-college turnout from depressed levels you'd win the middle of the country and the White House.

I saw Trump doing exactly that and it's why I picked him to win quite early in the process.

209 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is concerned that any state legislation that only contains enforcement provisions is likely to fall short of the high moral standard of treating each other as children of God.

That's sort of retarded.

The Church supports an approach where undocumented immigrants are allowed to square themselves with the law and continue to work without this necessarily leading to citizenship.

First of all, there's no such thing as "undocumented immigrants".

Secondly, once an alien breaks the law by trying to force himself onto our territory and impose himself on us there is no reason to even think that he should be afforded any opportunity to "square themselves". He needs to leave, either by deportation or under his own power to sneak back across the border.

I like Mormons. They're very hard working people and very successful, but I have absolutely no patience and no tolerance for organizations that openly espouse giving aid and comfort to an invasion of illegals. None, whatsoever.

216 So just a bit of perspective here: Someone mentioned the LDS church and saying that they wanted open borders.

I'm not so sure. I rather suspect we'll see a shift more to the right, if anything. The LDS church leader was pretty much down and out for a few years, and then died. While he was sick, I suspect a lot of church policy was being directed by one of the chief deputies who actually had been a refugee in Germany at one point as a kid, and clearly had a soft spot for refugees and immigrants.

Well, the new Church leadership was announced and that fellow was not in it. Instead, the former chief justice of the Utah Supreme court, and one of the most despised LDS people by the LGBT crowd, is now the number 2 LDS person. I suspect that the LDS church is going to significantly go back to the right, not that they ever really went leftist like Pope Francis. So I'm not sure how much Romney will really get from the LDS church.

Because people are in general stupid. Gabba gabba one of us! If the candidate is of X religion, the other members will think "It's my duty. Surely they wouldn't do anything to harm me". Like mindless idiot feminists in Germany that vote for Merkel merely because she's a woman. Are the populace of Utah capable of getting "woke" and electing someone else? I've got a bad feeling about this. I think Mormons are more loyal to their leadership than Catholics, and now that it is compromised they'll just vote for whatever is placed before them.

Catholics are as independent minded as any other group of religious folk. Most of us are conservative and believe in sovereignty.

The Church has laws which are published that state that a country has every right to defend it's borders.

Um .....

That is idiotic, immoral, and irresponsible crap right there, and fully justifies any vituperative description.

There is no such thing as "undocumented" immigrants. Legal, or illegal.

"Square themselves with the law" = amnesty, which is the dumbest, most irresponsible, and immoral thing possible, as it will inevitably lead to a great exacerbation of all the evils of mass illegal migration. Duh.

And even a real court (not like those now ruling the US) would snicker while striking down - properly - ANY scheme for a modified-limited-hangout (i.e., some bizarre gray area status of permanent legal residence without citizenship path). And that court wouldn't have to be engaging in the ludicrous arrogant garbage of a Kennedy, just making s**t up, slandering millions, and dictating a change in the culture based on laughable "constitutional" fabrications.

So, it *does* look like that church's policy position is no better than Gutierrez, La Raza, or the ACLU.

263 LDS garments represent solemn and sacred promises we make in the Temple to honor our spouse and God.

There are definitely warm fuzzy Mormon stories people share of someone being protected from physical harm while wearing garments, but for most of us, garments are a reminder of our Temple covenants.

Religious Jews have underwear of that sort, too. They're called "tzit-tzit". In the Torah Jews are instructed to make tassels on the corners of their garments. You can see these overtly when Jewish men (and now some silly Jewish women who wish they were men) wear talit in synagogue. Tzit-tzit are undershirts with the tassels that religious Jews wear every day.

I used to wear these when I was going to orthodox Hebrew school back in kindergarten and first grade.

273 So here's my "Mormons are Open Border" story.

I know a lobbying team owned by a Mormon(and bankrolled by the Kochs), and a local state rep Russel Pearce (who also is a Mormon) was making national waves with his SB1070 law that allowed police officers to detain suspected illegal immigrants. He also spearheaded a slew of successful bills that went after illegals. These bills were passing with lopsided majorities and were gaining steam around the nation.

The Mormon elders got together and wanted Pearce taken out, so they hired this team that had tight connections with that community. Spent big money. They thought it gave Mormons a "David Duke" type persona to have figures like Pearce so they funded a recall effort and had him replaced with an open border Mormon Republican who ended up winning.

But if you talk to any Mormon and ask them where is there biggest demographic of new recruits, they're going to say Hispanics.

This doesn't mean every Mormon thinks this way, but the leadership certainly does. Its the same disconnect between American catholics and the Vatican.

Romney has had a home in Utah for decades. He also has a home in southern California, close to where Anne had her dressage horses in training.

He sold his house in Utah that he had owned since the Olympics in 2009, then in 2013, bought another one in Park City that is a stunning log home. He also owned a second home in one of the cities in Utah. According to the Washington Post, he sold his home in Massachusetts after his failed pres. bid and then in 2015, registered to vote in Utah.

303 Pretty sure Mormons believe that the "lost tribe of Israel" came America and became the Indians. Also, that Jesus came to America as well. And that Jesus and Satan are brothers, or something.

Then there's the notion that men will become gods on planet Kobol when they die, and women can go there too, if they have procreated enough.

At any rate, it's an odd blend of Jewish mysticism, with a sprinkling of Christianity, and a huge load of Masonry.

Mormons are generally good folks, upstanding citizens, and productive if insular. They are huge up here and I grew up around them. They actually had more kids per family that us Catholics, and that was saying something.

Illegals don't break in to the US trying to be citizens. THey break into here to stay and work. Letting them stay is beyond amnesty - it's aiding and abetting, since that is all they wanted to steal from us in the first place. Letting them work, on top of that, is even worse of an accessory to their crime.

Offering illegals any sort of a path to citizenship is nothing less than treason - giving aid and comfort to an invasion.

groups of actors of actresses you should say so. If people make $50,000

Hollywood stars or what?

Posted by: Grump928(C) at February 16, 2018 04:57 PM (QQ+il)

No. It's aiding and abetting.

If someone steals a car, then amnesty is just not trying him for the theft. But he doesn't get to keep the car. Illegals are trying to steal residency. AMnesty is kicking them out but not holding their infiltration against them in the future. That is amnesty. Letting them stay is allowing to keep their ill-gotten gains. That is far beyond amnesty.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at February 16, 2018 05:00 PM (8gDQu)

334 bonhomme, in a practical sense (only one that matters here), amnesty is *anything* apart from enforcement of existing laws, and removal of violators. Not in principle - in unavoidable practice.

The intending illegal migrants aren't stupid, or cut off from information. They will (correctly) interpret anything than full enforcement as positive - it really is a binary situation, practically speaking.

Anything other than enforcement is, quite rationally, interpreted as a green light. The logic of this is rather obvious, but if real-life examples are needed, review the record since Simpson-Mazzoli ('86 act, w/ amnesty).

If one's only objective is to prevent *citizenship* for current/future illegals, then one is not thinking very clearly. 95% of the enormous damage done by the current collapse in rule of law is done without any connection to citizenship. Besides this, if you think that permanent gray-area non-citizenship will sustain scrutiny by "courts", I wished I lived in your Alternate Universe USA.

As thought exercise, completely exclude the moral toxin of amnesty (and while doing so, overlook the moral imbecility of churches and people who think amnesty is admirable, as opposed to despicable). Just dealing with the practicalities, it is an absolutely stark binary choice between enforcement (AND securing the border) - and anything/everything else.

The '86 act was chock full of tweaks and complexities and trade-offs. It was a complete sham. Amnesty (itself beset by massive fraud) happened - nothing else did (there wasn't even a head-fake at doing any of the rest).

347 bonhomme, deal with my unanswerable practical explanation.

BP reports that attempted illegal border crossing activity is back near levels seen in the horrible summer of 2016. It plummeted when Trump took office (and BP's entire body posture changed).

But, quite predictably and rationally, is now at crisis levels again. Why? Booming US economy. And, apart from BP's much more serious posture, no real change in illegal immigration policy. Breaking up MS-13 and deporting illegal migration activists is good stuff, but irrelevant to the mass phenomenon. No deterrent effect whatsoever.

Citizenship is irrelevant. The tender (and misguided, and remarkably ignorant and often narcissistic) moral sensibilities of amnesty proponents are irrelevant. All that matters is results, illegals are not stupid or irrational, they respond to concrete results.

Actually this yuuuuge issue is an excellent, devastatingly discouraging example of how critical thinking, and even basic familiarity with facts, are no longer part of American public life.

350 Note "gets to stay". You amended "shipped home".

That point ignores the conversation preceding.

The LDS Church's position is people should be allowed to continue to work and not necessarily gain citizenship. Presumably that would be on a work visa. A work visa ends, at which point they leave.

Grump then argued that's amnesty because they "get to stay".

I pointed out a scenario that proves amnesty = "gets to stay" as applied is a bit silly.

351 271 247 Are there not local Utah politicians who have been quietly working for years to position themselves for this Senate seat? Are they going to just step aside for the Yankee intruder?
Posted by: Grump928(C) at February 16, 2018 04:41 PM
Pretty sure that's why the Utah RNC head was unhappy yesterday. Mitt declared, Mitt wins. Done deal."

It's not "Mitt declared" - it's "behind the scenes, the Mormon Hierarchy declared." Mitt is just the beneficiary of their largesse.

People who haven't been to Utah, especially people back east, really have no idea how much of a "company town" Utah is, except it's not a town, it's a state, and the Company is the Mormon Church. When 2 Mormons of equal standing run against each other, then there can be an honest race - BUT when the Church leadership clearly picks their candidate as they have now, then there is no race. It's a done deal, and Romney's seat is a done deal.

There will be no serious primary challenger - not Chaffetz, not Huntsman, because one quiet word from the Hierarchy and every donation and every point of support is turned off overnight. Just like there will be no serious indy candidate,, without Church backing there is NO money and NO advertising.

The Church has let it be known that they want Romney, and that is all there is to it. That's how Utah politics goes.

Posted by: Tom Servo at February 16, 2018 05:14 PM (k1TUh)

352 Workplace enforcement, and border security, are the key missing pieces.

First is mostly discretionary action on the part of the administration. We haven't seen it yet. It's actually long past the time where enforcement priorities should have been shifted towards the workplace. No congressional action or support really required. Enormous, quick impact (the way that unskilled wage growth has occurred, already, has shocked many economists, and if a serious enforcement campaign were launched on illegal labor, little doubt that welcome trend would be greatly reinforced).

Border security still hostage to a GOP that, on balance, opposes its base, and the huge majority of the electorate, on key issues (O-care, illegal immigration, most prominently).

353 "332 I wonder how many in Utah are aware that Romney is just carpetbagging there so he can use a senate seat as his next attempt to run for president and he's not actually interested in representing the interests of their state."

In that, I think you're wrong. I'm convinced that Romney's faith is real, and I think he sees himself as being the official spokesman for the Mormon Church in Washington for a long time to come.

I honestly believe he thinks that is a much more important job than President of the United States is.

356 If the (fake, inverted) moral aspects of amnesty are not completely separated from the important, real world, concrete aspects of amnesty, it's not a serious discussion.

Amnesty/enforcement are binary. Hypothetical scenarios as laid out here are - sorry - just stupid and unserious. Anything reasonably interpreted by the adversary as amnesty IS amnesty, practically speaking.

Absent hermetic border security AND internal enforcement of the type never before seen, any amnesty guarantees continuation and massive expansion of the problem. Period.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 16, 2018 05:19 PM (QDnY+)

357 bonhomme, deal with my unanswerable practical explanation.

My answer to that is we need to tighten up enforcement on citizen verification at work and schools.

For example: right now employers are required to check eVerify for employees. But if eVerify comes back no or unverifiable, the employer can actually be sued for no hiring that candidate based on that information. This has to be changed.

The IRS knows which SSANs are being used fraudulently. Use that information to track down the 112 people in farm counties sharing the same SSAN.

etc.

Find them in schools. Find them at businesses. Fine the crap out of businesses employing illegals. Find them on welfare programs.
