Weekend Gun Thread

daily-man-up-20160907-104.jpg

*****

A couple of thoughts about the Parkland, FL shooting.

First of all my heart goes out to the victims. May God give them strength and comfort in the days to come.

You can blame the guns. You can the blame the NRA. You can blame gun owners. You can blame the 2nd Amendment. But, the guns, the NRA, you and I and the 2nd Amendment did not pull the trigger to kill those students and faculty members.

What should be blamed? The degradation of human life and instant self-gratification The lack of a moral compass. Our society is a throw away society. Babies are killed via abortion. Marriages are thrown away. The children are damaged then coddled. Belief in God is ridiculed. Mentally ill people are allowed to roam around until it is usually to late for them or some crime victim. If there is no heaven and hell, if there is no God and/or a Moral Compass and if life is nothing to respect this is what you get.

Imagine the hate that flowed through Nikolas Cruz. Seriously think about the following question. If you hate something so bad that you are willing to lose your life; will gun control work?

If you kill your mother and steal her firearms as Adam Lanza did, then murder innocent 6 and 7 year olds; what gun control will work?

As long as the 2nd Amendment is the law of the land there will never be gun control laws that will prevent what Parkland or Sandy Hook experienced. So you ask, what can we do?

If you go to a professional sporting event there are barricades present. There are metal detectors present. There are funnel access points. There are plainclothes and uniformed law enforcement present. It is about time that schools started to acted more like sporting events rather than a soft target. Maybe walk out of school to demand safer schools.

It wouldn't hurt that the law enforcement agencies took tips seriously. It would also help if the judicial system would treat gun offenses more seriously than they are now.

*****

This past Wednesday I stopped in at my favorite local gun shop. And handled one of these beauties. I really would like one of these. Should I? Do any of you have experience with this particular shot gun?

No, I'm not looking for a shotgun of this gauge.

How many of you have snowmobiles and/or ATVs? How do you transport your toy?

A fair number of years ago I shot in a weekly trap league. I purchased my shells from a teammate who charged me his cost. I should have gotten into it, but I didn't.

So how many of you reload? How did you learn? Did you have a mentor? Did you pick up a book? Did you learn via You Tube?

And finally, from our Weekend Gun Thread friend and Moron redc1c4, DIY WTF Had this been an ONT this person would have been a Genius Award Winner.

Tips, stories, .380 ammo and building instructions can be sent to petmorons at gmail dot com.

11 In a tweet, Neil DeGrasse Tyson explained his solution to school shootings. Bear in mind this quote is partial.

"perhaps having magnetic walls in every hallway/classroom of schools. As soon as shots are fired, the walls are automatically triggered and the guns just fly & stick to the walls. Problem solved."

12 Governments kill more people than common criminals ever could.

The only thing that prevents that is an armed and informed populace. Seeing the reaction of the media to mere children telling everyone else how it should be is telling.

18 My Priest at Mass this a.m. admonished those who are protesting guns and President Trump for this senseless killing.

He exclaimed that the absence of God in this child's life was to blame. The community where this child lived never exposed him to the Lord and where God is denied Satan appears.

He stated the protesters should be angry that God is and has been removed from children's lives in their community by our so called government "schools", community leaders and parents.

Not if you used your head and aimed well. We'd shoot at the bottom of the ring where there was a big build up of material anyway. So, it wouldn't reach the refractory brick lining. Even if you shot straight down the entire length of the kiln, about 150 meters or so, the slug would soften quickly enough to just be a blog at the far end due to the extreme heat.

But, yeah - you'd have to be careful.

50 The common thread is nutjob, in all the most recent high-profile incidents. Law enforcement failure and/or political corruption are common to most of them.

Bold predictions, Yogi Berra style (predictions are hard, especially about the future): no new "gun control" laws, no action whatsoever on ID'ing/containing the dangerously mentally ill.

I doubt anyone's talking about this whole topic by St Paddy's Day. Though I hope the Dems *do* add "gun control!!!!! eleventy!!!" to their agenda of sure-fire political catastrophes they've lashed themselves to, with the mid-terms in mind. So that step 1 (increasing GOP numbers, esp. in Senate) is accomplished. Step 2 - how to make those GOP majorities of any use to the country, in practice, remains a complete mystery.

No. Just no. We do not need to turn every school into a mini TSA zone. Our problem is not that our schools don't look enough like a police state.

We need more liberty at schools. That means that all the adult employees should be allowed to carry firearms. Nutballs would be less inclined to target places that are not gun-free zones, and the ones that do can be met with force instead of targets.

I think it's ok to be a little optimistic even if it's in vain. America's kind of worth it especially considering how many fought and died for her to get this far.

We owe it to them to be a bit more cheerful of our prospects.

No, that doesn't mean we can be complacent in the slightest or irrational, or wall-eyed.

RE: the asshole Left. They ain't going anywhere and it usually takes a catastrophe for them to shut up for a few years. I'm whistling past the graveyard here, because I don't want to see one occur (and I sure as shit don't want another GOPe-lead Iraq disaster.)

Take solace in the small victories where they can be had. If you're inclined and see some who may be open to reason, just ask questions of them and get them to flesh out their own unreasoned beliefs.

EG: gun stuff. I've found they have a hard time answering questions like "If this tragedy is sufficient to void the 2nd Amendment, would you be ok for the other Amendments to be removed by other tragedies? Or is there a right that you're not willing to give up?"

69 Also on the good news front, I completely broke down my Remington 7400 this week after it malfed at the range. Crappy plastic ejector port cover broke and popped the sear spring out of the trigger group.
The book says you have to get the bolt out to replace the plastic cover. Not true as it turns out, but I did. Pain in the ass reassembling. One tiny roll pin in the cocking/loading handle took me two hours to get in. Only got it in when I took the new plastic cover off; then it popped right in. Turns out you can fit that cover in by judicious bending after everything is together.
An educational experience. I love you tube.

The rotary kilns I was familiar with were about 12 ft in diameter and approx 150 meters long. Looks like a big paper towel tubes lying sideways. The feed end was in its own building where the raw material would be dumped in and the burner end had a 12 inch wide x 20 ft in length burner the burned pressurized coal dust. There was a 10 foot or so drop along the length of the kiln so gravity pulled the material down from the feed end to the burner end where it dropped onto cooling grates.

Hell of a piece of equipment.

76 Reloading. For those for whom it makes sense, and who have an interest, highly recommend.

"Makes sense" sort of revolves around your monthly/annual round count. If you shoot 3,000 rounds a year of all calibers, not worth the trouble. As your numbers get to double/triple that, it might make sense. Other factor is *what* you're shooting. Just 9mm and 38spl and .40 range fodder? Or expensive rifle ammo?

Another reason to reload is to customize. Handgun or rifle. For any number of reasons. A very nice benefit of reloading.

How-tos: seek out the better online videos on reloading in general, from manufacturers and individuals, UToob. Buy a good reloading manual - read it cover to cover.

Lurk, read, research at good online forums. The High Road has a great reloading sub-forum, where newbies are welcome and get good advice - even free samples of components from other posters; there are other such forums, including in big states the reloading forums on your state gun-nut website.

For replacing factory ammo, with substantial savings, and giving yourself the option of customizing loads, it is *easy*. No great technical or mechanical background or genius required.

79 I got a gun grabber post from a friend on Facebook. She likes to have discussions but her friends are all lefties like her. Something I said on my last response must have struck a nerve because I noticed about a dozen responses. I have no intention of looking at any of them. They have no real interest in stopping school shootings. Their interest is in confiscating guns. Unfortunately I am starting to feel that we will need another Civil War. Only this time, it will be the West Coast that will be occupied when they lose.

I particularly enjoy when some lib writes something like "Why don't Republicans care about other people?" And they get one, two, three or more answers from conservatives, turning the entire premise of the question around on the libs.

Anyway, according to this page, you can set up an account with just an email addy.

100 Lots of malfunctions in the 1911 in the shootin' match yesterday, but mostly stopped when I stopped using some "older" reloads. Yet when I checked those older ones, they probably had a sufficient charge for the standard spring I've had in the 1911 for some time now (before it had a slightly lighter spring, probably 14 pounds). So that's puzzling. No reason to think the extractor is a problem. I used a mix of magazines in matches, not my best ones, so I'll have to go to the range this week with the good Wilson mags and see what happens.

OK! Just be careful crossing H4350 and IMR4350. I think they're close on the burn rate chart but aren't identical. I use the Hogdon H4350 because it's much less sensitive to temperature variation. The IMR4895 is an old military powder (IMR = Improved Militery Rifle) and is much more temperature sensitive. They may have improved the chemistry over the years, but I seem to recall the WWII troops in Europe and the South Pacific had different loads (or something like that).

125 I started reloading well over 30 years ago and regard it as an enjoyable part of the shooting hobby. I taught myself the basics by reading manuals and articles since I didn't know anyone experienced and the internet, such as it was, didn't offer such resources. Of course, that was a normal way to learn back then.

There are a lot of benefits to reloading.

- The satisfaction of a hands-on activity.
- Learning to get the best accuracy out of your guns by developing ammo each one especially 'likes'.
- It can be a way to save money. Even with the cost of tools, references and components, I can reload for less than the cost of commercial ammo. If, like me, you are willing to scrounge and clean range brass, look for sales on tools and components, buy in bulk when possible, mold cast bullets, etc., costs go down even more.
- There is a sense of security, and satisfaction, knowing you aren't dependent on commercial supplies of ammo and possible regulations and restrictions on it.

Just some quick thoughts. When 22lr was unavailable or very expensive, I could reload a number of centerfire cartridges at less cost.

And don't forget the state-level issue - various states endlessly harass gun owners with new bans and restrictions almost annually, which drives people in those states to have their own mini-panic responses.

JTB, not much of a rimfire shooter here, and yes during the last big panic I was easily reloading 9mm for much less than the per/round cost of 22LR (if you could even find any). And I don't cast (but I do scrounge, exercise maximum economy and guile to my cost side - part of the game for me, it's actually part of the fun to reload for so little).

It's not just that. It's that they are prescribing some really fvcked up medicines (that they really don't know how they work or what they really do) that can have all sorts of weird affects on the brain - especially on one that's pretty screwed up to begin with.

The simplest - and least dangerous (!) - example is something like Ambien. That is some truly fvcked up stuff. Yeah ... I hear a lot of people saying that they never experienced the really messed up side-effects of it, but I have also known a number of people who DID experience those effects. They (and those around them) were just lucky that nothing really bad happened. But any drug that has people blacked out doing all sorts of stuff (like eating or driving) is something that a reasonable person would probably not have a large percentage of the population feasting on. It is a serious drug that alters the consciousness to such an extent that it should be considered a serious hazard to society, itself.

And when they have anti-psychotics that have the same sorts of weird, fvcked up side effects (and the sort of fvcked up people who seem to need anti-psychotics, to begin with) it's just a recipe for certain disaster.

But, as with all the other shootings of this sort, there won't be even 3 seconds of public discourse addressing the drugs this nutjob was on, his psychiatrist's liability in putting him on them and loosing him on society or anything else of the sort. Sort of like when AIDs first hit the scene and, even though it was alleged to be the worst thing since the Black Death ... you couldn't find a single research paper investigating anal sex and its connection to contracting the virus. NOT A SINGLE PAPER. But if you didn't want to put every single dollar available into AIDs research you were a total gay hater! Funny.

194 RI there are so many different ways to enjoy reloading. Our Weasel here, for example, is an accomplished precision rifle/distance shooter, where reloading can really contribute. I know lots of competitive shooters who of course tweak their loads to barely make "power factor" for their match ammo.

I just mostly have replaced factory ammo, and developed lighter loads that are easier to shoot, easier on the hardware, and are not available in factory ammo. Revolvers, especially, give you a lot of freedom (no need to worry about working semi-auto action).

One of the things I'm looking forward to doing at WeaselAcres is experimenting with load development techniques. My match loads are very consistent with an extreme velocity spread of around 7fps on rounds that leave the barrel at around 3000 fps. There, are, different, accuracy 'nodes' with different barrels and calibers and powder and I always thought it would be interesting to map the results.

218 Throw away dads/fathers is a very real thing. It's celebrated and enabled from the local government level to DC along with the culture. Also not allowing men (throw away men and boys) in general to be a part the lives of children while substituting the state. Consumerism crept into humans a long time ago, it's enabled and celebrated to consume men and boys. Vampires.

Day of the Cross and Sunlight can't come soon enough.

Rhomboid, Exactly right. I got my first press as a 'second' from Lee. In this case that meant a scratch on the paint. Been using that press for over 30 years. I don't insist on a digital scale for a couple of hundred bucks when a 30 dollar beam scale does as well, maybe better. It helps I'm not in a hurry or trying to load thousands of rounds at a sitting. I even thin out Lee liquid alox bullet lube to get about ten times the number of bullets lubed.

A seperate category, but I take the same approach with my black powder guns.

Radical liberals totally believe our government staged 9/11 so America could go to war. What they accuse us of doing, they do themselves---stage a tragic happening to inspire horror and outrage. Even some die-hard 2nd amendment supporters are willing to ban bump stocks after Las Vegas.

Back in the day, an oath meant something to almost every American; thanks to "progress" it means very little to far too many "americans".

For example, can you think of more than one or two
politicians (at any level, local, state, or federal) that you would believe if they signed a document containing the phrase "We pledge our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor"?

238 JTB, we're brothers when it comes to this stuff. I actually have kept notes on all my major reloading purchases (equipment), just to revel in the niggardliness of it all. Like-new Lee turret press, with half the dies I needed (then) and other gear, for pennies. Used beam scale seemed funky when I first used it (could have been me) - sent it in to RCBS ..... they sent me a brand new one, no charge.

Not a big consumer of "stuff" in life, but I've never, ever seen the kind and level of customer support anywhere else that I've seen in the reloading and to some degree firearm sectors. Seems the default response is "here, here's a new one, no charge" to almost any problem.

Aside from bargains on gear (most of which is built to last 100s of years - definitely "industrial" and not "consumer" era approach), best killings have come on components, purchased locally. Guys moving/getting out of the hobby. Ridiculously low cost basis for some of the stuff I've loaded.

2. Why write new laws when gun criminals get to plead down and get early release?

3. The Second Amendment is not just for hunting, self-defense or even supporting "the security of a free state". It is also to keep government from becoming tyrannical.

If you want Americans to give up their guns, you might start by ceasing to overturn our elections by wiretapping and framing your political opponents.

Ha! It's really all about the single-minded neurotic obsession with absolute consistency. If you know the weight of the bullet and its muzzle velocity then it's just a math problem to compute trajectory. When you rule out ammunition variables it narrows the potential causes of bad shots. When I shoot one of my match rifles and the impact isn't where I want it, I'm pretty sure I did something dumb behind the gun, or mis-read the wind.

265 1st thing they need to do right off the bat is ban the fucking PVP (player verses player) side of video games. Its breeding an entire generation of psychopaths. I love video games, probably played and won over 500 of them in my time, but this new breed of PVP shit is over the top. The slime balls that run these game companies turned games into a fucking blood sport. I was a die hard Destiny player, and the shit I heard on the headset is just..fucking...insane. All these kids talk about is kill times for each gun, how many damage points for head shots, how they're gonna wreck this player, that player. These scumbag game designers even include kill cams, so you can watch your kills and post videos. The companies are pushing this crap hard too. They make it so the PVP players get better weapons than PVE (player verses enemy) to entice people to play that garbage.

I was in a raid team one night, there was a 12 year old on the team. He asked why I don't do PVP. I said its stupid, has nothing to do with the story and that garbage didn't exist when I started playing games. The kid says "but shooting people is fun".

I rest my fucking case.

286 go around with a friend on FB the other night. She is a school teacher and she posted that meme that tells about the so-called 18 school shootings this year. When I pointed out that it was bullshit (nicely, of course) she posted that she didn't care, as long as it would help stop the next one. I asked her at what point would it make you upset that the press is flat out lying to you and I think my point finally sank in. She removed the post a couple minutes later and PM'd me that she didn't want to be political. I'm not sure if she's mad at me or not but I just couldn't let that go. She is only in her mid 30's and is really quite beautiful. I would like to hit it one day and I hope I didn't mess up my chances.

well, you may as well get to the point. Go out for dinner and when dessert arrives, with a appertif, I might recommend you give an ice wine such as inniskillin a try, lay it out that and ask "so, when are we going to fuck"?

287 If you go to a professional sporting event there are barricades present. There are metal detectors present. There are funnel access points. There are plainclothes and uniformed law enforcement present. It is about time that schools started to acted more like sporting events rather than a soft target. Maybe walk out of school to demand safer schools.

That's a form of surrender. As a free society, a civilized culture, we should not tolerate this form of behavior. Children from the day they are born should be taught that they are free human beings but that they will not tolerate uncivilized behavior.

Anyone who wants his fifteen minutes of fame should receive it on the stretcher as they cart him to the morgue.

You want to act out, try it.

We wanted a polite society what we have is a simpering society.

TPOP, don't know what a jeweler's scale is like, but I imagine it would work just fine. We're not talking really precise measurements, by industrial standards. And if you're reloading handgun ammo, visual confirmation of the load should give you total inner peace (easy, except in powder-puff loads in .357 cases, for example, where you have to peer in each one with a light).

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? After all, you knew ahead of time that those bluecaps were out at night for no good purpose. And you could be sure ahead of time that you'd be cracking the skull of a cutthroat. Or what about the Black Maria sitting out there on the street with one lonely chauffeur - what if it had been driven off or its tires spiked? The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

I do not weigh each load for any caliber, but with 30-06 (for the M1), I do weigh about 1/3 of the loads, and of course closely visually inspect all of them. Amazing how precise your sense, based on the visuals, become, once you've been doing a certain load for a while (when you're using same headstamp of brass, especially, and there's little variation in internal case volume).

In the wake of the shooting that killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida, stars far and wide are speaking out in the ongoing gun control debate. Now, “The Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik has made an impassioned plea for “civil disobedience.”

The star then threw her support behind the upcoming National School Walkout organized by the activists behind the Women’s March. She also encouraged fans to go to her blog, Grok Nation, where a post she updated called for more practical ways to advocate for gun control.

“Say yes to civil disobedience. Walk out, sit down, stand up, encourage others to do the same, whatever it takes.”

317 In response to studies of copy cat suicides, much of the media quit publicizing suicides and especially teen suicides. The mainstream media at least at the local level may have actually gotten this right after enough studies proved their culpability for copycat suicides; search "media coverage as a risk factor in suicide." A teen suicide should never rate more than a small notice in the obituary section.

The Florida school shooter wrote "I'm going to be a professional school shooter."

The media and democrats (but I repeat myself) created this monster and make passionate love to this monster for the opportunity to push gun control. Hold them responsible.

SD is a good metric but also note the extreme spread. Any variation in velocity shows up as vertical dispersion on the target. Next time you have your chrono out record the velocity of a few 5 round groups and compute the difference between the fastest and slowest. Then drop the high and low velocities into a ballistic computer (JBM makes a great free app) and convert the velocity difference to elevation change. 20 fps could be an inch or more even at 500 yards.

I trickle all of my match rifle loads to the speck of powder. The 505 is actually pretty sensitive. I have a tuned M5 scale and a really expensive electronic pharmaceutical scale neither of which really ever get used much. For handgun plinking I use a very inexpensive digital scale and just check every 20th round or so. At handgun distances I don't see much benefit in being more accurate than that.

I prefer Bullseye powder to Clays with 230 grain RN 45acp loads. Never had a problem getting the pistol to cycle. (I think I read that Bullseye was an original powder for the cartridge but not sure if that's correct.)

I use Lee dippers most of the time. If they don't provide just the charge I want, it is easy to modify a larger one or make the equivalent from a spent case. I always pick up used dipper sets when possible for that reason.

341 I just wasted a couple of hours in what I will charitably call a discussion with some anti-gun nuts on Facebook. The ignorance about firearms, firearm laws, and the 2nd amendment is appalling. They obviously confuse AR15s with M16s. And don't know what an assault rifle is. I gotta admit I'm not so sure of the accepted definition of an assault rifle. I have my working definition but don't know how accepted it is. Hard to have a discussion if sides can't agrees on terms. But they are so sure they have the moral high ground. The level of inflamed rhetoric is astounding. If you ask them to explain what they mean or what the logic of their argument is they just double down and head off in another unhinged direction. The only benefit to me was to vent some frustration I'm feeling over a personal situation. I need to find an online article that explains all in simple form and just post that link whenever I find a similar "discussion."

342 As I think I said waaaay up-thread, the two steps are 1) increasing GOP majorities 2) making such majorities worth almost *anything*.

Step 2 remains a baffling paradox. What is looking to be an insurgent-free primary season pretty much guarantees the GOP will continue to be nearly useless, except as a limit on the worst of the opposition.

The Dems' keeping "gun control!!" alive and popping until November would almost certainly help with Step 1. Have no idea, given what appears to be the state of the country and the electorate, how anyone even begins to address Step 2.

349 I posted this a few days ago, right as the Nood came up, which is probably about to happen again, but:

People yell back and forth about mental health, but it's a subject that is going to be increasingly important (because, generally, as a civilization, despite setbacks, we're progressing toward greater and greater personal power due to technology and education).

Unfortunately, our understanding of the subject and ability is worse than our barely-better-than-ancient-Greek level of physical medicine (yes we have many more medicines and procedures, but our processes are sloppy and our tools are still primitive compared to our ideas).

So, basically, sooner or later we're going to have to go all Space Program on that problem, hopefully before someone slips the net and does to a whole city what these periodic nutters do to a school or business.

It's either that or harden literally everything, which, civil liberties aside, would just be *exhausting*.

What that *means* is devoting serious, well-funded, thousands-of-serious-and-thoughtful-people resources to a systematic effort to help borderline people obtain self-control and to supervise over-the-border people.

And that is going to require us to grow our economy substantially, because we are apparently incapable of getting spending under control.

1) Mine the asteroid belt (sounds crazy but we're metaphorical inches away).
2) Massive moon-shot level of testing of genetic editing.
3) Massive moon-shot level of research into mental illness, both organic and functional.

*All* of this is dangerous. Each one can go terribly wrong. Sitting back and not doing them is just more dangerous.

Mark, that's fine - to each their own. Since you sort of brought it up, there's a fairly interesting series of videos produced by the national firefighter's association (something like that) on what happens to ammo in fires. Think they were done to research/educate firefighters on the topic. Ammo companies donated f***king pallets of ammo, and they were set alight in varying situations.

Quite interesting. Bottom line (IIRC) - nothing observed in the tests constituted any serious additional hazard to firefighters. Most ammo just sort of "pops" and oozes - there's certainly (of course) nothing resembling acceleration of projectiles as occurs in firearms, where the ammo is inside a chamber designed to contain/direct the pressure towards acceleration of said projectile.

I recommend looking up these videos online, very interesting.

384 I just wasted a couple of hours in what I will charitably call a discussion with some anti-gun nuts on Facebook.
Posted by: Ron Riley at February 18, 2018 09:11 PM (K0xn1)

Simply ask them what the "AR" in AR 15 stands for. Not a one of them will know it stands for Armalite Rifle, the company that first introduced this product. Then, ask them how many rounds can be fired per second from such a rifle. Not a one will know that it is one round per trigger pull,

My own brother, who still lives in Chicagadishu, lost his mind when I told him I had 3 ARs and 2 AK 47s. I had to patiently ask him what he knew about these guns, and educate him from there. His natural lefty assumption was that all of these were full auto.

394 TPOP I use Silhouette in my 9mm. Have tried it in 45 and 38 as well, but for my purposes it's best in 9mm. Only drawback is how fine an actual powder it really is - though my equipment still loads it precisely enough for me. Because of its burn rate I think it's best in the higher pressure handgun calibers (9mm, .40), vs low-pressure ones like 45/38. And since I generally load to lowest-energy-that-will-work-the action, or minimum accurate pressure for revolver, it has limited uses for me. But a good powder.

400 314 Weasel that's interesting that you use a 505 scale, for what I deem your benchrest-level precision in reloading. It's obviously adequate for my much cruder purposes.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 18, 2018 08:59 PM (QDnY+)

I use a Lyman T-Mag turret press. I currently use an electronic dispensing scale. So, each charge is weighed with less hand motion than throwing with a powder measure.

While I seat the bullet and crimp one round, the charge for the next is metered out. I use a powder-though die for filling the case with powder. Powder goes from scale to case, bullet immediately seated and then crimped. No loading block.

Not a fast as a progressive press, but much faster than a single stage.

I "discovered" HP38 during the Great Obama Reloading Component Drought when all the pistol powders I previously used became unavailable, but a local store had HP38. Like you say, it works well in a bunch of non-magnum pistol calibers. I believe you're right, that HP38 are *exactly* the same powder, made in the same factory, from the same recipe. My older loading manuals sometimes show slightly different loads for the two powders, but the latest Hodgdon data shows the same loads.

I imagine 8 pounds of a fast powder like HP38 would last a really long time, but that depends on how much you reload.

425 Probably late on the thread but this is a skipable wall 'o text range report anyway.

I went back to .45 to carry after last week's range testing seem to point the finger more at...my finger. Specifically where on the trigger I was pulling, it was skewing my POI downward. When I was very careful to pull straight back, mid-way up the trigger, I was hitting point of aim.

So far, so good.

So I loaded up the Glock 21, took some extra boxes of .45 and brought along my XD 45 to do some testing.

And...I think I need to mod out my Glock 21. I have a Gen 2 and it's like a tractor, it just runs and runs. It feeds everything and will shoot super tight groups (by my offhand standards, YMMV). However, it is not natural in my hand. And when I start to fire the first round, my trigger finger has to stretch.

I THINK that is part of why I was hitting so low with my previous range work. My finger isn't on the 'right' part of the trigger to pull comfortably, so I'm pulling down and skewing point of impact.

The reason I think that is that the XD 45, which fits my hand more naturally, does not have that point of impact problem. It shoots pretty much were I aim.

But I love my Glock 21. And I don't own a holster for the XD 45 (apart from the tupperwear it came with, I prefer leather from Galco or Don Hume).

So, short term: I'm back carrying my G21, an inch or two low at 7 yards won't mean much for social occasions.

Medium term: I'm going to buy some gunleather for the XD45.

Longer term: I need to figure out what trigger mod or grip mod will make my Gen 2 Glock 21 comfortable to shoot.

Good day at the range, though. They are almost all good days, at the range.

I'm betting the vast majority would follow orders. The only chance for confiscations to NOT take place would be with the officer ranks to refuse those orders.

Of course, after several non-compliance addresses where the citizen as well as a few soldiers were killed, the general ranks might become divided on the nobility of their mission.

Out of production and clearancing remaining barrels (222 Rem, 24 in sporter and 26 in bull contours). Barrels are $55, so we both got one of each type.

Could it be any more obvious that prayers and appeals to God are a complete waste of time?

Harden these targets. Perimeters, metal detectors, strict rules about who comes in and out, and specialized armed security. Not some retired local cop with sleep apnea, a gut like a bean-bag chair, a .38 he hasn't fired since Carter was president and a copy of the local paper under his arm. I'm talking about specially trained, sharp, armed security officers who take their profession very seriously.

Stop glamorizing and publicizing these pathetic, autistic, over medicated and terminally damaged losers who shoot up schools. Ideally, Cruz would have been interrogated thoroughly for a day or two to make sure that he acted alone, and then he would have been quickly put down with a lethal injection and anonymously buried. No reason that the rest of us ever know his name or see his photo.

Law enforcement makes mention of school or other mass shootings a priority. If the FBI needs another division that does nothing but this, so be it. If we need a new agency to deal with this phenomenon, so be it.
And if a dangerous and defective loser like Cruz comes to official attention, he is removed from the herd and detained for as long as necessary. His rights do not supersede my child's right to not be murdered.

And why was he allowed to buy a gun? By definition, if Cruz was allowed to legally buy a weapon then our gun laws are unsatisfactory. There have to be common sense additions or changes to our gun laws that protect my second amendment rights but prevent at least some psychos from shooting up schools.

Again, I think God has proven that he has no interest in protecting our children. Let's stop deluding ourselves. Let's cowboy up, toughen up, and protect them with practical, commonsense measures.

I'd visit a range and rent a few in different calibers and find out what 'works' for you.

I'm a large mammal and I like 10mm on the top end. If you don't mind the weight and blast/recoil, .357 magnum is also a big boy gun.

.45 ACP is good even in FMJ rounds and ends most questions.

But it will come down to taste and what pistol feels 'right' to you. What you can shoot accurately counts for a lot more than size. .32 ACP can be lethal, hell even .22 LR kills folks.

A) It's a suppressor.
B) Carrying a suppressed pistol would be a bitch. It would be slower to draw, more awkward to handle, and give the bad guy more to grab onto in close quarters.
C) It's not about the biggest round you can handle. I can shoot some pretty large-bore handguns and wouldn't ever consider carrying them. It's about placing rounds on target, as quickly and as accurately as possible to end the threat.

458 Iowa Bob with the good info on powder. It would definitely be an accelerant, in a fire, but doesn't explode. I have a wooden "powder magazine" built off of plans found on the web. Simple, pine 2X4s, loose-fitting top, 2 inches of wood thickness all around (retards heating of contents inside the box). I think it's per national firefighting institute standards. Idea is that it would prevent burning of powder in a fire that gets contained/put out - obviously in a total burn-out the powder would end up blazing away.

Built a half-size version of the big box, with scraps, for primers. Have not seen any studies/experiments of what happens to primers, specifically, in a fire scenario.

478 Gun Thread.

Ever hear people talk about shooting slugs through shotguns with some sort of choke? This guy shows a slug being pushed by hand through various choke tubes. This puts the discussion in physical and observable terms. The slug falls (rattles) through a cylinder bore, and goes through an Improved Cylinder choke using finger pressure. Even with more choke, the slugh can still be made to pass through, using hand pressure. It's worth watching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjng0wUHvjQ
FAQ #3 Can I shoot a slug through a full choke?

I had never paid attention to the term "Cut shells" before (I think I'd never heard it). It looks like these things are the closest thing to HE shells.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpQDaFF1Ghk
Cut Shells + Sheet rock test

There's always talk about home defense, and putting projectiles through 3 or 4 walls. This video clears up most, or at least some of the discussion:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C29mEJFFIvo
Home Defense: Interior wall penetration test with 12 gauge shotgun

Apparently, rifled barrels do not improve slug accuracy much, compared to Improved Cylinder barrels. But I've read some ammo manufacturers who apparently make slugs specifically for rifled barrels (these are not tested here). Rifled barrels do A LOT for sabot rounds (usually a .44 JHP in a plastic case that comes off after barrel exit)

Shotgun Slugs: Smoothbore vs. Rifled Barrel

Note: there are other videos about rifled barrels and buckshot (larger pattern, but no center hits) and birdshot (will cover an 18"x30" target, from above the eyes to below the groin at 5 yards; just the thing for stopping someone just long enough to whack them with a slug)

482 I think there is a definition for Assault Rifle, but I don't think there is one for Assault Weapon.

"Assault rifle, military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire. Because they are light and portable yet still able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy at modern combat ranges of 1,000-1,600 feet (300-500 metres), assault rifles have replaced the high-powered bolt-action and semiautomatic rifles of the World War II era as the standard infantry weapon of modern armies."

483 @ Arbalest

Good video round up, thanks. I've seen a couple of those before.

If you match up a rifled slug barrel with the right kind of slugs, you can get really, really good accuracy.

But Improved Cylinder is a good enough compromise for most shotgun usages.

I'm not a fan of birdshot.

I tend to reload in stages: decap, inspect the case, resize and prime with a hand primer. The nice thing is these are mechanical actions and can be done while istening to a baseball game. When it comes to the powder charge and bullet seating, I want it quiet with no distractions. The process isn't fast but it works for me.

Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at February 18, 2018 09:46 PM (di1hb)

I've tried H110 in 45 Colt for a Blackhawk, and never found a load I liked. I had problems with inconsistent ignition and even one squib load that left the bullet stuck in the barrel (not fun). This was with recommended loads for the Blackhawk, which are hotter than recommended for old Colts, including magnum primers.

I think the problem may be the large case size, and low loading density. I got more consistent results if I tipped the pistol up to get the powder near the primer before each shot. Not sure what the problem is, I get good results with H110 in 357 and I know it's widely used in 44 mag.

Since that exercise I've been using HP38 in the 45 Colt, but I'd like to find a slower powder that works well.

There shouldn't be one for 'assault weapon.'

It's a pleonasm; a redundant phrase. Kind of like the opposite of an oxymoron.

There is no weapon that can't be used in an assault. A fact that fails to be processed in your average Lefty's skull. It's was an emotional term created by the gun-grabbers to get attention.

But, like I wrote above, states like CA are codifying the definition to mean mag-fed semi-auto rifles with certain features like a grip, barrel shroud, etc.

512 Drugs: My oldest grandson has been taking something for ADHD for a good ten years. The couple of times he forgot to take his meds before going out to lunch and a movie with me, I could have throttled the kid. He was just horrible, so I came to understand that some times, the drugs are good and useful.

OTH, I do agree with you guys who are saying it's the schools that are forcing the drugs on kids, especially boys. Today's teachers simply are not equipped to deal with a class room of kids. They have absolutely no idea how to maintain control, plus most teachers are females and expect the boys in their classes to act like prissy girls. When the boys behave like typical boys, the teachers freak and demand that the boys be dragged off to the doctor to be drugged to the gills.

As a nearly cutting edge Boomer, I was in a grade school class of 36 kids. I do not remember a single one of my teachers ever once losing control of her classroom. My mother taught fourth grade for many years, as did my grandmother. My aunt was a sub before getting her master's and becoming a school librarian. Under absolutely no circumstance can I imagine any of those three failing to maintain classroom discipline. But that was way back when when prospective teachers were taught the art of controlling a classroom. In her last few years of teaching, you should have heard my mother kvetching about how lazy and ignorant the young teachers just starting their careers were.

516 The core policy platform for liberals is power. I used to be confused about the disconnect between Islam"s homophobia, sexism, etc, and the party of free love Democrats. Once I realized that stuff was just a means to the core policy, it all made sense. They admire the control that Islam exerts on its people.

So in the US, the main objective of the hateful liberals is to force the people they hate, to do things or give up things that they love.

Gay marriage was aimed at Christians, global warming at pickup driving rednecks, gun control at gun nuts.

Once you understand how they wave to use power, you understand how they can had so many conflicting policies.
