Now Idaho is a sanctuary state. It’s barely been two weeks since Idaho regulators said they would allow the sale of health insurance that doesn’t meet all of the Affordable Care Act’s requirements — a controversial step some experts said would likely draw legal scrutiny and, potentially, federal fines for any insurer that jumped in. And on Wednesday, Blue Cross of Idaho unveiled a menu of new health plans that break with federal health law rules in several ways, including setting premiums based on applicants’ health. But no, several students in Lawrence Rosen's Princeton anthropology class walked out last week, and made formal complaints, after Rosen provided examples of supposedly offensive speech. Among other things, the instructor asked which was worse: a white man punching a black man in the face, or a white man using the N-word. Rosen, who is Jewish, used the actual slur several times. I read that there is even less to the Mueller indictment that we could have thought. It seems that a pair of reporters from a Russian Business magazine published their findings of the "Russian Troll Factory" which had all the information.
But the Russian reporters are a little confused about the indictment. Because they are saying that it seems that Mueller just lists every name that they know about. They know for a fact that some of the names on this list only worked for the troll factory for a little bit of time. Some never worked past 2014. So very much of this was known back 5 months ago. They seem to have indicted any name they knew about, and some of these names never meddled in the actual election cycle. Nobody has come up with a decent rationale for why the Attorney General of the United States had to recuse himself for this--or what damage was done that we immediately needed a special prosecutor to investigate this. what Berserker said. The gaming industry is sick. The "AAA Games" are big and splashy, and come out with little opposition in that market, and this allows them to exploit the suckers buying them. The 'loot boxes' which encourage gambling by underage gamers are a big case in point.
Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at February 18, 2018 10:33 PM (6FqZa) That's just what it is, gambling by underage kids. I was gob smacked over the money these kids would spend hoping to get some set of armor, or helmet. Around Halloween time in destiny 1 there were masks you can get for doing activities. There was one mask, a skull mask, and it was the only mask that had movement, as in the jaw would move and chatter the teeth. You "could" try to get one in a loot box and holy shit the kids were going nuts trying to get it. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Divison at February 18, 2018 10:38 PM (aMlLZ) 163

Lootboxes are both effectively gambling and outright ruin the actual gameplay experience unless they are cosmetic only. When tied to progression the companies do everything they can to outright force you to buy the boxes in order to compete. This is most obvious with EA's Ultimate Team system.
The reason that they're getting in trouble now is because EA was moronic enough to take a game that would primarily be played by children and turn the lootbox progression mechanic up to eleven. The ESRB, being either a bunch of spineless cowards or just morons, did not do the job they were crated for and rate the game AO for gambling. This would have kept the government out of it. Instead they decided to ignore it. Posted by: ravenshrike at February 18, 2018 10:39 PM (xh8Fr) 167

When I was stationed at Luke AFB, AZ there was a sign on the flight line kitchen that aircrew should not eat hamburgers. Since Luke was an f-16 training base where pilots learned to fly the jet, I wondered why they posted it. Turns out the hamburger they used had soy product in it and it could make a pilot sick or give him gas. The instructor pilots laughed at it as they already had enough hours flying that nothing would make them sick. But the upgrade pilots obeyed the sign as they would be the ones who cleaned up their own puke in the cockpit. Crewchiefs could not be ordered to do that.

I carefully planned that rocket. Working backward in seven stages that would get you from ersatz Earth to the ersatz Moon and back. I know that Charles Schulz wasn't an 'ass,' but I've read he hated hearing from his syndicate; he always figured it was bad news, would rarely take their calls, and would only get back to them when he was good and ready.
Thank God that United Media had the sense to give him ownership of Peanuts in the 1970s/80s, because otherwise, Schulz himself said he probably would have quit. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 18, 2018 10:56 PM (eMKNe) One of these days I'm gonna find out what the appeal of Peanuts was really all about. I just...never got it. Robert, the appeal of Peanuts, for me, was a hero-- Charlie Brown-- who had just as much trouble getting through life, even as a *child,* as I did.
And as I grew up and found out things didn't necessarily get any easier, that led to a newfound respect for what Schulz was doing. I understand that not even Peanuts was everyone's cup of tea, but I personally give Charles Schulz credit for really helping me get through my whole life, as if he were a personal friend of mine. I'm not kidding, it meant that much to me. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 18, 2018 11:07 PM (eMKNe) 267
I never understand why these human biomass people just don't kill themselves and save the planet.
--- It's the same thing everywhere else you find the breed. It's all about control, and probably the biggest reason we can never have a peaceful separation. If everyone who was worried about Obamcare just pooled 2% of their wages/wealth, all the 5M or whatever uninsured could've had insurance paid for. If they stop driving their cars, running their AC, etc., then all the goals of forcing reduced power, consumption, etc. on 100% of the population would be immediately achieved. But it doesn't matter that much to them. They're Muslims at heart, and they just can't stand knowing you're not a believer (or at least being forced to pray). Robert, re the early strips, I believe that the Peanuts website allows you to read *every* strip Schulz ever did, if you want to.
All you need to do is enter in a 1950s date. The strip started on October 2, 1950. It was interesting to see how things evolved. Even Schulz seemed to have an "angry young man" phase, where he was making some pretty pointed commentary about things. One of my favorites is an early Sunday strip where Charlie Brown goes to the drugstore to buy some comics, and as he's standing in front of the newsstand, Chuck exclaims "what a beautiful gory layout!" EVERY comic book, meanwhile, has a title like: "Blood," "Kill," "Thug," "Fight," "Crime," "Murder"... Posted by: qdpsteve at February 18, 2018 11:15 PM (eMKNe) 292

I listened to CKUA, Alberta's public radio network, which was and is, mostly music, but ceased being a paid supporter when they drifted too far into political correctness. But that turned me on to a lot of blues, jazz, and folk, and classical. And I went to the blues clubs, whenever I could, and got to meet some of those great old performers, many now passed on. Never got to hear Slim Harpo live, though. And nowadays, I listen a lot on line to WWOZ, out of New Orleans. www.wwoz.org If you want to check it out, try the Gentilly, Jr. show, which runs three hours starting at 6:00 P.M. Mondays, New Orleans time. He plays a mix of jazz, blues, RB, folk, and old-timey country, and stuff that falls in the cracks between. He is a fine disc jockey. I can highly recommend the show. And the show right after it is a gem, too. And they mostly leave the politics alone. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 18, 2018 11:21 PM (Dbv1R) 314

@316 The sexism (and racism) of the anti-gun crowd is astounding. They have a very narrow mental image of gun owners and apparently no ability to expand that view even given evidence.
--------------------- Sexism and racism are always allowed when the targets are "rednecks" (or the nearest similar stand-in). And any examples of possible targets who aren't "rednecks" are blithely ignored by those who commit the aforementioned offenses. It's a cognitive break. One of the women (an American skating for South Korea; can't remember her name off the top of my head) in the pairs suffered a wardrobe malfunction. I think they have female freestyle wrestling in the summer olympics - I'm not sure but I think I saw something about it. Where the hell do they find participants for sports that don't have more than 27 people doing it in any given year? It's like the men's field hockey team in the summer olympics. I saw that and couldn't understand where they found guys in America playing field hockey. Now, sure ... they can just go grab a bunch of trannies, but how they used to put these teams together years ago was something of a mystery. A lot of cold calling, I guess ... Do car dealerships who sell cars that cause multiple fatality pile ups get "mortified" and close their business?
Posted by: steevy at February 18, 2018 11:06 PM (LiyEm) Methinks gunshop owners are simply trying to make the best of a bad situation. If they stayed open, they would be the target of crazies for years. So they close up, make a statemeent, not so much in favor of more gun controls as in favor of better reporting of nut cases. Some virtue-signaling. Shut the store down in that location. Maybe operate out of a garage for a year for a few close friends, then re-open in another location under a new business name. I was a big fan of Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes. And even Doonsbury, before I understood what was being indoctrinated. The problem is, Berkley Breathed is a dick. And Bill Watterson has integrity. I still read Calvin and Hobbes strips to this day, and I still love them. Got the huge hardcovers with all of 'em. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards at February 18, 2018 10:07 PM (xJa6I) I was a Bloom County fan as well, my girlfriend gave me a stuffed Bill the Cat for my birthday one year. I have a photo of me getting onto a C141 in Egypt with Bill's head sticking up out of my ruck. The company first sergeant jumped my shit for that stunt. But I read BC now, and frankly it's dated, and irrelevant. Forgettable. And Breathed's drawing style is just a pale imitation of Doonesbury. One of the best parts of Calvin and Hobbes was that Watterson would draw with actual perspective, especially in the Sunday strips. And the fantasy strips were incredible. Always wanted more of the Tracer Bullet strips, but Watterson found it really difficult to do the noirish artwork and write the stories so that they weren't too cliche'd. Wow, what a vast wasteland the Olympics are today. Figure skating and curling (some hockey earlier in the day). There must be also paint-drying and grass-growing events occurring, but they're not on the live-feed schedule.
What would be great would be some foreign national broadcaster that's taking all the feeds and linking them on their website. So, like a TV network ourselves, we could just tap into whatever we want to see. NBC has provided quite a few feeds for real sports so far, but would be nice to have them all. One of the many joys of Soviet, ex-Soviet, and authoritarian regimes
generally is exit customs. Only time I've ever done anything like it, but once when an Azeri exit customs guy was trying shake me down over one of my rugs (clearly not an antique, clearly nothing for exit customs to worry about), I started to raise a stir (in Russian). He immediately backed off and looked around nervously. But unfortunately I only started buying rugs in the later 90s. Baku's an oil town, so got real western $$$$ very early in the post-Soviet era. At that time, with everything new, the local and regional economies having evaporated into thin air overnight, and the stock of good rugs much larger, people made out like bandits. By the time I finally started buying the screaming bargains were gone - though I did just fine by world standards for what I got. Posted by: rhomboid at February 18, 2018 11:52 PM (QDnY+) 405

There were waves of rumors that Brezhnev when I was in the USSR the first time. At my suggestion, our group adopted some code for discussing the topic. We'd say "Yuri said he heard a rumor that Eyebrows bought the farm last week". Our minder, who lived in our dorm and was with us on all group trips/events, never broke that code - she had no idea.
I clearly remember enjoying her silent rage when we did our just-arrived bus tour of Tallinn, Estonia (even then, a beautiful spot). The local guide - with a very practiced bad accent to her Russian - mentioned nothing Soviet or Russian in describing everything we saw. "This new office complex, built with Finnish labor" ...... "this medical research lab, with investment from Sweden", etc. Yeah, the fragility of the Soviet clown car was not hard to see even at a cursory glance. That bogged down jeep picture - I remember watching a guy with a D7 working on grading an oilfield location, years ago. He got into some little underground spring that bogged his cat down, one you couldn't see on the surface. The D7 started to sink, but he figured hell, I'll just go back and forth and work my way out. If he had stopped when it just started any truck there could have given him a winch out - but he didn't quit trying until both treads were completely under the mud, and the only thing left above ground was the cab he was sitting in.
For everyone except him, that was a damn funny sight. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 19, 2018 12:13 AM (V2Yro) 427

That beige critter at the top right is a Hudson pickup, not a Studebaker Coupe Express. The Coupe Express was much more styled. Even the box was styled. Anna, there were four series of Studebaker pickups offered, between the late pre-War years, and the end of truck production in 1964. Starting with the aforementioned Coupe Express, which was built on a car chassis, and was highly styled, and offered 1937 through 1939. Succeeded by the M series, which was a purpose-built pickup from the frame up, and also offered as medium and heavy trucks. The Studebaker US6 used a modified M-series cab. M-series trucks were offered through 1948, and were succeeded by the 2R series, much more modern-looking, with hidden running boards. The truck you describe is probably one such. The 2R series continued unchanged through 1953, and got a bit of makeover in 1954, adopting a one-piece windshield. The basic cab remained unchanged until 1964, although grilles and hoods did change. In 1961, they ceased to use this "C-cab" for pickups, and adopted the "T-cab", which was derived from the Lark 4-door sedan. T-cab pickups were all called Champs, and could be had as half or three-quarter ton. They are pretty square-looking. Probably more than you wanted to know. And restoration parts are readily available for all models. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 19, 2018 12:23 AM (Dbv1R) 435

In listening to various broadcasts from the time, I'm sure I heard some official Soviet statements in which "help from our allies" was prominently mentioned. There is a swell little old guy who lives in Bryan, Ohio who spent about half the war driving Studebaker US6 trucks from Iran to Leningrad. He was a little bit in demand for a few years, and did a neat presentation that was a sort of travelogue.
They had a "TKD" (totally knocked-down) re-assembly shop on the Gulf of Oman, staffed by Army engineers who had all been in ASTP, the high-intensity officer training program for collegians, until it was cancelled. There was a cruiser kept in port for AA and as a security base, and it was so hot that they had to run the pumps and spray down the upper works with seawater all day, just to keep the magazines at a safe temperature. Walking on the deck in daylight would soften the soles of your shoes enough to stick to the deck, yet tribal types who went aboard to trade were barefoot, and that impressed him. The drive north was far enough from the lines that he never felt he was in a war zone, but the handover to the Soviets was on the frozen lake outside the city, and that could get dicey. The hardest part was a jeep ride back to get the next batch. When the mission ended, they were bound home through Suez until their CO volunteered them for the invasion of southern France, and they got to serve under Patton for the rest of the war. So much for the basket case trucks that Studebaker never built. Another time we might discuss the Burma Road an the Alcan Highway. Posted by: Stringer Davis at February 19, 2018 01:10 AM (H5rtT) 474

From what I've seen, McArdle's a mix of prog and libertarian. Yes, I know that in theory those two things aren't supposed to play well. But that's how I'd describe her. She has her statist tendencies, but she also has a lot of areas that she would prefer the state to not get involved in. Posted by: junior at February 18, 2018 11:43 PM (VwdDc) McMegan is socially liberal, but is able to acknowledge that she's a product of growing up on the East Coast in NYC and DC. While she's libertarian leaning, she also tends to view it as impractical, and thus sometimes reflexively leans left in response. AOP, on July 3, 1941, Stalin addressed his country for the first time since the German invasion. Via radio.
Pertinent passages: "In this war of liberation we shall not be alone. In this great war we shall have loyal allies in the peoples of Europe and America ...... Our war for the freedom of our country will merge with the struggle of the peoples of Europe and America ..... It will be a united front of peoples standing for freedom and against enslavement and threats of enslavement by Hitler's fascist armies. In this connection the historic utterance of the British Prime Minister Churchill regarding aid to the Soviet Union and the declaration of the United States Government signifying its readiness to render aid to our country, which can only evoke a feeling of gratitude in the hearts of the peoples of the Soviet Union, are fully comprehensible and symptomatic." Yes - this was primarily a pep talk, given as German forces were rampaging across the Baltics, western Belorussia, and western Ukraine. Quite an interesting speech, overall, in which a lot of historical references were used to bolster the case for confidence even as the news was grim. And a very interesting defense of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. As with so much else in the USSR, there were many things that were universally known and never or rarely spoken of, and western aid during the war fits in that category. Stringer, now THAT's an interesting story. The Iran route for Lend-Lease. One of the subsidiary objectives of the Germans' drive on the Caucasus - which was hopelessly beyond their means, probably - was to break that link.
Would like to learn much more about that. Including the actual route. Assume it was to Baku, then by barge across the Caspian up to Russia, or by road through the more passable terrain found on the Azeri side of the Caucasus (compared to the Armenia/Georgia route). The Charlottesville Antifa movement should be investigated by a competent intelligence agency to find where the money came from. It was certainly inspired by classic Soviet agit-prop techniques. My take is that it was home grown, because those Soviet tactics have been internalized by the organizers over the years. The groups involved had Soros money. How much other money is unknown. DoD has all the footage, but it has not been released to the public. A National Guard unit set up recording devices in a nearby 2nd story building, ISTR. Lots of curious actions that make reasoned people want answers. Alas, they are under a media pillow. Posted by: NaCly Dog at February 19, 2018 06:37 AM (hyuyC) 529

I mentally over it for half a second while typing and left off the apostrophe, on review see it printed both ways. Mueller needs to hire an extra mob lawyer to get to the bottom of this. "Peanuts, The Far Side, Calvin & Hobbes, whatever happened to the strip and its creator."
Take Peanuts off that list - Schulz may be dead but they're still running the strip - and add Piranha Club. Posted by: aelfheld at February 19, 2018 01:06 PM (IxDhF) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0666 seconds. |
