The Morning Report 2/13/18

urine.jpg

Good morning kids. For me and I suspect most of you, confusion is the order of the day when it comes to the President's budget proposal as well as his infrastructure plan. Is the latter part of the former or is it a separate bill entirely? And then we get into the political/philosophic debate over the issue of borrowing and spending, as well as the Federal government's role in, well, everything really. To top it off is the issue of who is getting the better of whom: the Left, the RINOs, the conservatives or Trump himself? Meanwhile as this goes forward, we have the issue of immigration and Amnesty. On all of these, my gut is to trust the President while being wary of those in Congress who are charged with actually crafting law.

On the plus side of things, it seems as if the infrastructure plan is more of a matching funds kind of strategy, with the Fed only footing a part of the bill with state and local funds and private enterprise financing the rest. In fact, as some analysts point out, it mirrors the way PDT has run his businesses in the past. I'm really of two minds of all of this. I sorely want to see the size and scope of government shrink. After all, it is our money - past, present and future - that funds our own destruction in the form of The Swamp. But, unless and until we have 100 Senators and 435 Congressman with the exact same temperament as the President, the sausage is going to be made, and so we just have to accept that fact and make the best of it, and trust that the President has our backs on all these issues.

In coup news, we have a just breaking story about how, literally as the minutes were ticking down on the 8-Year Reign of Error, Susan Rice sent an e-mail about a meeting she had with Comey, Biden and Obama about Russian collusion. The recipient was... herself. Meanwhile, the delay in sentencing of Michael Flynn continues to raise eyebrows and Ben Stein, who aside from his impassioned cries of "Bueller? Bueller?" was a speechwriter for President Nixon, implores the GOP to get off its ass and fight back against the anti-Trump coup. I assume he's unaware that at least 50% of that party is part of it.

Moving along, the Winter Olympics continues to be a shameless anti-American, anti-Trump political opportunity for the Media as well as a number of our own athletes, sad to say. While these revolting hacks fall all over themselves to smear us and elevate Whoa, Fat's! sister, herself a part of the ruling tyranny, Tu-Ca absolutely obliterates an American commie on his show. The last time I was into the Olympics was '72, and we all know what happened then. At least in '76 we had Bruce Jenner to... oh, wait. Never mind.

Circling back to politics, we have some good links about how the Dept. of Education is shit-canning the transexual bathroom nonsense, an IBD editorial about Trump's behind the scenes dismantling of whole swathes of the Leviathan and his simple plan to deal with the Federal workforce - hire the best, fire the rest. I'm down for that struggle.

From hither and yon, the Iranians unveiled a nuke-capable missile of their own manufacture, an interesting analysis of China's impending economic woes fueled by its demographic woes, congratulations to Baltimore for 11 straight days without a murder, you'll be happy to know that Bob Corker might not be retiring after all and finally, my own take on the ex-president's portrait.

Anyway, links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.

Wondering if he had expected to be astride a bucking horse like in some of the artist's other works.

"Over the line" is photoshopping a politician with a monkey standing on his head taking a dump. Oh wait, a professional artist has done that.

44 I don't think the artist usually paints black women holding the heads of decapitated white women. I think he did that a couple of times. Nasty. I also wouldn't mind a picture of Jesus as black-he probably didn't look like a Olympic skier from Norway, after all , but given who the artist is I'm a little dubious about the quality-particularly since he also paints tattooed gangs youths holding Bible verses.

According to Tammy Bruce, Mooch looked very unhappy with her portrait when it was unveiled; although I'm not sure how that differs from her standard scowl.

I don't know if this was discussed yesterday but is continuing to have portraits taken in the age of photography some sort of noblesse oblige or just a job corps for painters? Isn't the historical reason for this that subsequent generations will know what they looked like and in these cases it's not even close.

Posted by: Captain Hate at February 13, 2018 07:50 AM (y7DUB)

136 I knew the Michelle painting was bad, primarily because it doesn't look like her, but thought the BO painting actually looked okay. While the weird garden background wasn't my sort of thing, it (and the other backgrounds the painter has done) at least look skilled and visually interesting.

Seeing the portrait lined up with a montage of the other portraits, however, and envisioning them in the same gallery, is pretty jarring. Maybe Trump will take pay homage to BO and have his portrait showing him in front of his southern border wall, with a knife in one hand and a severed Mexican head in the other? In the name of racial harmony, of course.

Yes, it really is a waste of money. These portraits probably cost thousands of dollars, and they're completely unnecessary. A photo costs very little, and even having one transferred to a large canvas is quite cheap. I have large photo-to-canvas pictures of various AZ landmarks hanging on my walls, and none of them cost more than $200.

If presidents and their wives want to flatter their own vanity by sitting for portraits by painters, have at it. But taxpayers shouldn't be paying for this nonsense in the age of digital photography.

175 171 Yes, it really is a waste of money.

I poke fun at a lot of things, hence "The Outrage Outlet". Too many people take things way too seriously for one - "Omigosh! Did you hear what that senator just said? He wants to do (something)! We're doomed!" when it is patently obvious that the senator is just running his blather-port and that nothing like he said is going to be done.

And while I am a cynic when it comes to human behavior, some people take it to an extreme that goes beyond healthy skepticism and into a ludicrous jaded attitude just short of sticking one's head into a gas oven and going all Sylvia Plath. In other words, people need to lighten up just a bit.

Take this Corker - Blackburn thing. I have no idea about it, I do not know the politics of that state, that state party, who the players there are, and how that plays out. But it would be nice to hear from someone who does in order to get some perspective. As opposed to knee-jerk screaming about RINO's and DIABLO's and betrayal and all of the rest.

I'm no art expert, but looking at other works by Barack's portrait painter, it looks to me like he has some talent. The political messaging certainly isn't my cup of tea, but the subject matter is humorous in a way: some Trayvon Martin-type thug is a hoodie and sneakers on a rearing horse in the style of "Napoleon Crossing the Alps"? Stained-glass windows reimagined with black grievance fantasies? It's like a rabid far-left version of the paintings of American presidents with muscle cars, guns and velociraptors!

Michelle's artist, though, is just bland.

346 It looks like Rice e-mailed herself to create a self-serving record. e.g. Obama told us to do the investigation "by the book." Written as they were all about to leave the White House.

But not as self-serving as Jimmy Drama writing file memos about his version of private conversations with Trump and then sharing them with Comey's inner circle and then leaking them to The Times.

Yup, sounds about right.

Or like Comey's journal entries, it's a kind of CYA. I recall a Senator penning a memo to himself re: concern over post 9/11 security measures and then releasing it years later as if to say, "See, I knew Bush was getting crazy with national security!" Because when one is concerned, the best thing to do is write a memo to yourself and then file it away for future use.

The "send it to yourself" gives one the fig leaf of "I sometimes use email to store reminders and such". Of course, why would one do that, or "document" one's observations and recollections when they are on the way out the door?

A high volume of drafts that exist for a day or two, then get deleted or morph into something totally different is too much of a tell, especially with the public post Petraeus.

404 I've been milling on the portraits. I decided last night, the portraits had to be provocative. It has the similar dynamics to a wedge issue that "progressives" love.

We don't "GET" the portrait. We make some deal about the other paintings of the artist where black women have beheaded white women (and the only reason we would care is because they're WHITE women!).

Our cultural betters think it's so much more in tune with the urban art culture for the president not just to have some boring , traditional portrait, but a current portrait, by a real artist.

The weirdness of the paintings, the weirdness of the artist, provide an in-group and an out-group. Those who "GET it" and those who don't.

If it's "weird", you don't GET it. If the other paintings offend you, you don't GET it. If you think Michelle's portrait doesn't look like her, you don't GET it. Anything you say, you don't GET it.

To me, just this simple matter illustrates that if conservatives were to capitulate to every letter of the LGBT... agenda, the progressives might need to find something else to make you feel behind on. A "progressive" needs a body that "can't keep up", and thus reinforce the identification of oneself as "progressive".

The Obamas went out and got themselves a shibboleth. It's going to stand out against so many presidential portraits. And people who tell themselves they "GET it", have another reason to feel superior--which is what it's about, anyway.

427 Do you think progressives ever get tired of living their lives where every little thing they do must be tied to some issue and/or "send a message?" It sounds incredibly imprisoning to me. You want to order that burger but instead you get the kale salad because you have to constantly prove your bona fides to your fellow travelers.

That assumes that Barry and The Mooch give a damn about their "followers".

I remember those 'draw me' art school advertisements. Best story I heard about them is someone who drew the duck ( or whatever ) and got a call from the school assuring the potential artist that they had talent. To which the potential artist replied, "Yeah, the sketch was easy. Did you see the stamp on the envelope?"

He had drawn a US postage stamp on the envelope that had passed muster and was postmarked.

435 Let us accept these two myths as fact

1. Egyptians ruling classes were black
2. Slave labor was used to build the pyramids.

Uh-oh.

Posted by: Ripley at February 13, 2018 09:14 AM (MxEKc)

Worse yet. Egyptians believed in TOTAL slavery. They would kill somebody's slaves so that the slaves could serve their master in the afterlife...for ETERNITY.

Once you were a slave, your entire existence was serving. That was slavery in Egypt.

(But the secret is that if you get into deep archaeological sources, you'll find many racist things said against the Nubians of the jungles. Egyptians were very likely a lighter-skinned Semitic people enslaving sub-Saharan black Africans.)

437 427 Do you think progressives ever get tired of living their lives where every little thing they do must be tied to some issue and/or "send a message?" It sounds incredibly imprisoning to me. Like, say for instance you really love red meat, but since you're progressive and all your friends are, too, you constantly hide that fact from everybody. You want to order that burger but instead you get the kale salad because you have to constantly prove your bona fides to your fellow travelers.

Posted by: Mainah at February 13, 2018 09:27 AM (B+qrE)

Nope. The high they get off of feeling smug and "superior" keeps them going.

438 Oddly, when I look at the Obama painting, I see Bogart, which is odd as hell, because I never thought that before. look here:

The constant stress of saying what you are supposed to say, rather than what you might actually think given the freedom to do so.

449 Are we dealing with a misspelling here?
Perhaps purposeful because (.)(.) involved?

Or just a different person altogether?

I thought it was Nefretiri.
Either way, since home sick, still, I guess I'll pop the movie in.
And yes, the gal, whose name I can't remember, who played Nefretiri was indeed beautiful.
And yet, not even close to as devastating as YeVonne De Carlo was in that movie.

451 The big problem I see with the government, either Federal or State & Local, funding these sorts of projects it that these folks often make very poor choices in terms of what will produce a good return on the investment. From Government we get: expanded railway infrastructure, sports stadia and complexes, roads and brides to nowhere, airports in unvisited geographies, and any number of other pork barrel projects. And then they raise taxes - such as the gasoline tax - to pay for some of it, but shortly thereafter steal those funds for some other grand government purpose.

Nope. Bad idea. Just say no.

453 I'm sorry but I'm confused about the meaning of PDT's 'budget' in the context of a continuing resolution that funds the federal government for two years to the tune of $3T of additional debt? Is its purpose merely to outline Trump's priorities, of is it intended to be actionable. If the latter, why did he sign the McConnell travesty?
