Yes, it's that time of year!

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

There are only two seasons - winter and Baseball. Bill Veeck

Quote II

Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too. Yogi Berra

Quote III

I guess my thermometer for my baseball fever is still a goose bump. Vin Scully

Quote IV

Next to religion, baseball has had a greater impact on our American way of life than any other American institution. Herbert Hoover

Do you believe in polls? Do you believe this poll is really truly accurate?

A new poll proves that most Americans believe former President Barack Obama wiretapped the Trump administration and want a special prosecutor to investigate the incident.

According to Investor’s Business Daily, the poll taken in the last week of January by IBD/TIPP, showed Americans “overwhelmingly believe the Obama administration ‘improperly surveilled’ Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, and a majority say they would like to see a special prosecutor appointed to look into possible misconduct by the FBI and Department of Justice in spying on Trump.”

That means 55 percent — well more than half — believe Trump over the media on a major issue stemming from the campaign and the presidential transition period.

Under the category of: Culture. Flipping a coin for a tie is now considered racist. Who knew?

Instead, we had the age-old means of breaking a tie: the coin toss. Hamlin won.

Simple enough, right? Not so fast. Davis is black, and Hamlin is white. Just like at the Emmy or Grammy awards, identity politics is thrust into the limelight. And a whiff of racism is in the air.

Davis tweeted below. He claims that the U.S. Olympic team acted "dishonorably" by tossing a coin to break the tie vote. And he threw in the #BlackHistoryMonth2018 hashtag, as if the coin toss were somehow racist.

There is one Catholic school that still believes in biblical principles. Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School terminates employment of a homosexual school teacher.

“This weekend I married the love of my life and unfortunately I was terminated from my job as a result,” Morffi said in a post on social media. “In their eyes I’m not the right kind of Catholic for my choice in partner.”

*****

Albert Einstein, interesting quotes and the Theory of Relativity. He also has some forgotten inventions.

He held quite a few patents, including one for a refrigerator that would make the appliances much safer.

In the 1920s, nascent refrigerators used highly toxic, corrosive, or flammable compounds like sulfur dioxide or methyl formate as refrigerants. When passed through tubes and chambers while being pressurized and depressurized, these chemicals could efficiently cool a target chamber. However, moving them around required motors, and thus moving parts, which were subject to breaking down or leaking. When Einstein read a news article about an entire family in Berlin who died in their sleep by breathing in leaking refrigerant fumes, he resolved to do something about it.

Al Gore and the rest of his Dooms Day weasels are pretty silent on this. The sun is growing colder.

By 2050, our sun is expected to be unusually cool.

It’s what scientists have termed a “grand minimum” — a particularly low point in what is otherwise a steady 11-year cycle.

Over this cycle, the sun’s tumultuous heart races and rests.

World wide ice fishing? How awesome would that be?

It appears that the JEF failed again. Syria still using chemical weapons.

UN investigators are looking into reports the Syrian regime used chemical weapons on at least two rebel-held towns in recent days. The reports mark at least the sixth time the regime of President Bashar Assad has used such weapons against civilian population centers.

The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria said Tuesday it had received multiple reports “that bombs allegedly containing weaponized chlorine have been used in the town of Saraqeb in Idlib and Douma in eastern Ghouta.” The allegation is likely to further increase tensions between the U.S. and Russia at the UN Security Council, where both countries are permanent, veto-wielding members. The U.S. complains that Russia, which backs the Assad regime, blocks any meaningful action against the Syrian leader’s use of internationally prohibited weapons.

"We’re getting chemical weapons out of Syria without having initiated a strike." President Barack Obama April 28, 2014.

The Tea Party, RIP

It has finally happened: The Tea Party is dead.

The grassroots movement that fought so hard for fiscal sanity in government over the past decade is no more. It was killed off by the very same Washington establishment it sought to overthrow. Its death leaves proponents of limited government with some big questions: What went wrong? And what do we do now?

For me, it's personal. For years, the Tea Party was my life, and I have the the battle scars—and tattoos—to prove it. When I was the President of FreedomWorks, I worked side by side with tens of thousands of citizen activists as a Tea Party organizer, organizing protests and knocking on doors, hoping to topple the Goliath of government. But now the party's over.

*****

The TEA Party may be dead, but there are reasons why you got President Trump. Here is one of them.

The American Civil Liberties Union in Oregon filed a lawsuit against the federal government this past week challenging the presence of immigration deportation officers at courthouses in the state.

Carbon footprint and injuries, Canadian PM Trudeau's motorcade crashes.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s motorcade was involved in a car crash Friday evening that left at least three people injured, including a California Highway Patrol officer.

Trudeau, who was traveling in the motorcade at the time of the crash was not injured, officials said. His car was not involved in the collision, the CBC reported.

Unless you've been completely hidden, everyone knows the Olympic Winter Games have started. Everything you wanted to know about the Olympic torch.

After 101 days of traveling by plane, train, automobile, Korean warship, zipline and even robot, the Olympic torch will finally reach the site of the Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. This Friday, a lucky honoree will use it to light the Olympic cauldron in a grand, symbolic start to the games.

While the blaze looks like any other, its origins are special: It was lit not with matches or a Zippo lighter, but with a parabolic mirror, echoing rituals from Ancient Greece.

One of the reasons the Catholic Church is so effed-up right now is because in the 60's and 70's a lot of ex-religious had axes to grind and instead of just leaving their orders and leaving the church, they stuck around and infiltrated the schools. Is it any wonder that there are so many parents sending their kids to Catholic schools and the parents have no clue what it takes to be a Roman Catholic?

BuzzFeed has been paying a former top FBI and White House cybersecurity official to traverse the globe for the past six months on a secret mission to corroborate various claims in the Trump-Russia dossier assembled by ex-UK Spy Christopher Steele.

A former Federal prosecutor claims that the Democratic response to the House Intel Committee's GOP-authored "FISA memo" was blocked on the recommendation of the FBI and DOJ because the agencies are conducting internal investigations into politically motivated malfeasance by specific individuals which the Schiff memo could compromise if released without redactions.

Oh, they still have some talent but they'll trade them during this upcoming 90 loss season. The owner decided that he can still make money without trying to field a decent team. One thing on food tasters: for these type of positions, they usually hire people with a very high number of tastebuds (SuperTasters, I shit you not.) You are actually tested with dye and a specific diameter hole, and the tester counts the number of taste buds revealed by the dye on your tongue.

It is mostly decided by genetics.

173 Yay! Spring training!

I've been watching old movies on TMC because I'm feeling kind of burnt out on politics. I watched "In Cold Blood" last night. It's a great, chilling movie, but I got annoyed with how they tried to make it into an anti-death penalty movie at the end and equate the executions of the killers with the murder of the Clutter family. If the movie accurately represents the actual murders, a teenage boy saw his father get his throat cut and shot right in front on him and thought his sister was about to get raped and murdered - and then that boy was shot. Perry Smith chatted with Nancy Clutter about horses and then she had to listen to the gunshots that murdered the rest of her family before she was shot. So I don't give a shit about the killers shitty childhoods or parents or that they were nice to some little kid and his grandpa when they were on the lam or how scared they were before they got their necks stretched . I would have put the noose around their stinking necks myself.

The murders happened the year of my birth. It just goes to show you how far we've "progressed" as a society, that it seems unbelievably trusting of the Clutters to not have locked their doors at night. Their murderers just strolled in.

240 One of the reasons the Catholic Church is so effed-up right now is because in the 60's and 70's a lot of ex-religious had axes to grind and instead of just leaving their orders and leaving the church, they stuck around and infiltrated the schools.
Posted by: RondinellaMamma

In my area, it isn't ex religious, it's Nancy Pelosi style female "Catholics", who are becoming principals and teachers. These are the Catholic women who have completely bought into leftwing feminist bullshit blaming men for everything.

I've listened to the principal at my parish school complain about how she goes to large diocesan meetings for Catholic schools where she isn't listened to because she's a woman. Um, a large majority of the administrators at these meetings are women. Women dominate. It never occurs to her that people not listening to her may have more to do with her own flaws.

I've also listened to Catholic school teachers parrot that line that women make 76 cents for every dollar a man makes. Again, too brainwashed to understand that their choices are a reason why women earn less. CHOOSING to work in a career where they know their earning will be limited. Catholic schools, Christian schools, and so on pay less than public schools. They know that going in. And CHOOSING to work in a career where they work fewer days per year, and thus earn less.

It has been decades since I met a Catholic school principal who wasn't a liberal feminist.
They also make excuses for being pro choice.

Oh, Jeez, those were awful murders.
A friend of my sister's and her husband were friends with Jesse Anderson and his wife. Anderson murdered his wife and the mother of his 5 kids by stabbing her to death in a parking lot. He stabbed her through the eyes. Then he told the cops a black guy attacked them in the parking lot. It was an idiotic alibi because they were able to trace the knife - an expensive Wusthof one - to the store where he bought it and the clerk remembered selling it to him.. A few days after the murder he showed up at my sister's friend's door and sat there on their sofa and sobbed. My sister's friend was absolutely convinced of his innocence at that time - nobody had suspected they had any problems and she said it was an Academy Award worthy performance. Oh, what will I do without her? What will the kids do? Yeah sure. It sickened her later when she realized she had been crying with and hugging a brutal murderer.

Anderson was sentenced to life and was later murdered in prison along with Jeffery Dahmer. You gotta wonder about those 5 kids. How do you deal with the fact that your father brutally murdered your mother?

281 I agree, to an extent, that Tea Party initiatives towards sustainable spending goals have been beaten, and that this is because of partisan politics. But I think the author of that piece misunderstands one of the main reasons why.

For most of my life, I have been very vocal about the need for fiscal sanity, for rational spending. But then I watch politics, and I see voters who hate politicians who don't come up with big impressive projects and ideas, and I see politicians who send money to all of their supporters get bigger and stronger while those who don't just fade away and accomplish nothing, in the end.

And now we are in a death struggle with the left, one where no matter what fiscal policies are followed, our entire culture and country will be destroyed if the Left wins. And I hate the Left for that. I hate them so much that, if necessary, I would burn down the entire economic future of this country, just as long as the Left would be destroyed by doing it. I don't care about our future anymore - I care about destroying the people I hate, NOW.

I've heard it said that War corrupts everyone who gets caught up in it, and I think I understand why, now.

As for the Tea Party, we attended both the 2009 and 2010 9/12 marches on DC and I visited DC twice to lobby members of the House and Senate to vote against BarkyCare. I even threw some money toward the Tea Party. But then, their special pleadings began for more $$$ and there always was some new emergency that required just a little more $$$. No focus, no clear goals and no program. Eventually their mailing became just one more source of junk mail and went straight to the recycle bin. Individual candidates for the House and Senate that I supported monetarily in 2010 and 2012 took the same path. My recycle stream gets three or four pieces of mail from them every week.

290 One thing on food tasters: for these type of positions, they usually hire people with a very high number of tastebuds (SuperTasters, I shit you not.) You are actually tested with dye and a specific diameter hole, and the tester counts the number of taste buds revealed by the dye on your tongue.

Quite a long time ago, a Michigan newspaper did an article on the babies that Gerber used for testing baby food. They didn't want babies who generally liked their food. They wanted babies that were somewhat fussy eaters. I can't remember what they said the compensation was for the job, but it sounded like a lot of moms wanted to get their babies into the program.

Speaking of old refrigerators, my father once told me about an accident that occurred back in the 1920s, when he was working in an ice-cream factory in Chicago. One day, the building had to be evacuated because the refrigerant coil in the freezer had ruptured. However, one of the workers fell and broke his leg while trying to evacuate the building, and was killed by the fumes. What a horrible way to go.

Turns out, it was the Broncos' cheerleaders, The Pony Express, that were rolling these bums! The Pony Express was disbanded as a result, and that's why the Broncos didn't have cheerleaders for a couple of decades.

In 1997, Congress mandated that cigarettes on base would be the same price as those off base. In Korea I was paying about $6.50 a carton. They immediately went up to $12, then a couple days later $16, then $24. well, I ended up buying them at a 7-11 type store off base for 12,000 Won which at the time was about $10. I bought them there for the rest of my time in country. Today, a carton of Marlboro Reds costs $63 and change on base at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. I think they're a bit cheaper in Florida, but not much.

It's funny how one word means different things to different servicemen. Tell each of the four military branches to "secure a building".

The Marines will put together a strike force to storm the building and take it by force.

The Army will set up a guard rotation and ensure the building is well-protected.

The Navy will make sure the doors are locked and the lights are turned off.

The Air Force will take out a 99-year lease with an option to buy.

409 Being raised a Navy Brat of a career submariner, I got to experience some things, even though dockside, that few could imagine.

I've been aboard an operational WWII submarine, that served till 1969, the U.S.S. Rock. Got a great lunch with the crew, and watched a B&W movie with 'em in the messroom.

I would've been, oh, fourth grade 'bout then. But, I remember it like it was yesterday.

Same with being aboard a Guppy Class boat, the U.S.S. Gudgeon, which was a real Cold War intel wonder. You can thank the Gudgeon for most of the bottom maps of the Western Pacific Ocean.

Another dockside lunch, but this time, I got to watch the Engineering Mates while they were overhauling/repairing a single cylinder of the Fairbanks Morse diesel. It had a cracked ring, and they were in the process of re-honing the cylinder wall, without removing said cylinder from the main block.

Finally, I got *one* 1/2 day "Tiger Cruise" aboard the U.S.S. Snook. That was an early Fast Attack boat derived from the Albacore Class, but a subsequent development inclusive of the "SubSafe" specifications, after the Thresher loss.

What did all three of these waterborne experiences have in common?

The belowdecks spaces of a Submarine have a very unique, lubricating-grease, blood sweat and tears, pungent aroma, unique I think, to The Boats.

The Old Man's seabag was redolent of it, every time he returned from patrol.

Any of you ever meets a Sailor wearing the Dolphins, stop and give 'em just an extra bit of thanks and respect.

They've earned it.

That reminds me of another one. The Navy and Marine Corps were wondering how come the Air Force always has the nicest things. Well, when Congress allocates funds to build a base, the Navy goes out and builds a runway, hangers, and asks Congress for more money to build MWR facilities. Of course, Congress says no.

The Air Force builds a gym, golf course, and top of the line barracks, then go back and asks Congress to fund the runway and hangers. Congress has no choice but to fund them.

I agree with Garrett: What has red meat to do with Type 2 diabetes? I've had it since early 2002, and nobody has ever said anything about not eating red meat. I still have all my toes, both eyes, have never had neuropathy, and have never used insulin. My kidneys are shot to hell, but not because of the diabetes. I have a rare auto immune disease called Kappa Lightchain Disease that has absolutely nothing to do with the diabetes or the genetic cesspool I inherited. I am under the impression that all chemical weapons are made with chemical "fingerprints" to allow determining sources. This is done by the manufacturers who only sell through governments, and dislike being blamed for giving weapons to the wrong people who actually used it, as opposed to selling it to people they were told to sell it to.

Turns out, it was the Broncos' cheerleaders, The Pony Express, that were rolling these bums! The Pony Express was disbanded as a result, and that's why the Broncos didn't have cheerleaders for a couple of decades.

I was fortunate. 2002 was the year when the medical establishment realized nothing but carbs was really that important. Prior to that, you practically had to have a degree in chemistry to figure out what you were allowed to eat. I knew a couple of Type Ones who nearly cried with joy when their doctors told them to forget about everything except carbs.

Might I politely suggest that you read it, anyway? Inland doesn't matter.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, one of the most important figures in the U.S. Navy's victory in the Pacific in WWII, was from Fredricksburg, TX. That's a good 300 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and nearly 2,000 miles from the Pacific.

The Museum of the Pacific War is there in Fredricksburg, too. You want to see a fully functional, WWII P.T. Boat? Got one there.

And it was restored to combat worthy glory, right here in Galveston Bay, in the Clear Lake area, actually.

It's well worth an entire day's visit, itself. The town then offers it's own unique charm for another day or three.

Read what I'd posted. I think you'll truly come to appreciate that wee bit of knowledge.

My first 35mm camera was a Kodak Retina IIc (small "c"), with a Schneider Kreuzach 50mm f/2.8 lens, set into a Synchro-Compur leaf shutter, with "X" synch to 1/500th sec.

Lens so sharp, you could shave with it.

Later, I got the accessory "wide" (35 mm) and "tele" (75 mm) front lens element(s) interchangeable lenses for it. Never could find though, the related hot-shoe mounted "frame finder" for those lenses, so composition was always a bit of an educated guess.

I *will* buy another IIc... if nothing else, just to have on hand as a working relic.

It will remind me of myself, if nothing else.

I drink a fraction of the soda pop I used to. I was a coke addict and would put away more than a two liter every day. I still have my morning coffee but I drink a lot of iced tea. I drink at least a bottle of water every day but I know it's not enough. Been trying to do better but no luck so far. Sunday in the church we celebrated Transfiguration Sunday, but we have transformative events in our lives in which the holy (if you believe in the holy) breaks in. You can take a picture but it's also a window. You have a new vocation as a parent and things will never be the same. May God bless you and your wife and your little baby!

I'm in a real Catch-22 pickle.

Pre-diabetic condition with congestive heart failure. I was drinking a lot of just water, thinking that was a good thing. But had an episode a week before Christmas and was told, at the ER and shortly thereafter, that I was drinking TOO much water. I was told to not only cut my water intake by over half, but to take a 'water' pill to help flush fluid out of my system. Sometimes I wake up so parched, like I was dreaming of hiking the Sahara or something.

536 Palpatine: I suspect it might have more to do with nurture rather than nature. I'm one fourth Bohemian, with some Irish and Scots-Irish tossed in for good luck. The Scots are notorious for having the worst diet in the world -- refried fried carbs. Bohemian and Irish cuisine is heavy on the potato and the dairy. But I was raised on the all-American WASP diet, which doesn't bother me at all. In the past several years, I've learned to eat Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Italian. None of it bothers me, although I must admit that Bohemiam potato dumplings are extremely filling and can leave you comatose if you eat one bite too much.

But I'm me and you're you. What works for me may not work for you. Eat what makes you feel good. Heck, I've been known to eat Bacon Double Cheeseburgers and Big Macs.

Himself and I eat a lot of chicken these days -- not because it is "healthy" but because it's a lot cheaper than beef. Wal-Mart sells these nifty curry kits with spices, marinade, and simmer sauce. We stock up when boneless, skinless chicken breasts go on sale. Since there's just the two of us, one of those kits is perfect.

He doesn't trust his best pitch in clutch situations (tailing fastball) and by no coincidence performs his poorest in big games. Wrigley Field is not a friendly fit for him.

Aka Lasix. Yeah, that's good for intermittent use. They give it to racehorses, too; the Racing Form will list if a horse is on it.

Lasix also known as furosemide is a potent loop diuretic that increases urine production and urinary frequency. Lasix has been administered to horses before races for the past 40 years as a way to reduce or prevent bleeds. Because Lasix reduces plasma volume and the effects last up to 2-4 hours, it is believed by many experts to reduce blood pressure in the lungs and prevent bleeds from occurring.

566 479 ... Jim and Palp,

There are some items I appreciate and still use when possible because they were so well made and meant to last. Also because they can still do a fine job. For me that includes some firearms, manual typewriters, slide rules, woodworking hand tools, and mechanical cameras. Heck, Mrs. JTB inherited a White Company treadle sewing machine from the 1890s with all the extras. It still works and I should learn how to use it. If I was a sailor, I would want to learn to use a sextant.

I'm retired now and don't have to be efficient, make a profit, or meet deadlines. And the items don't have to be expensive if one is willing to shop for non-collectible versions and maybe do minor restoration and maintenance. Making, or keeping, these items usable is part of the enjoyment.

My Mom, the Southern Baptist WV hillbilly (who converted to Catholicism because of dem rulz back then) used to make Hungarian Cabbage Rolls, a rather large pot of them. I couldn't stand the smell of those things while they were cooking. But once cooked, they were just delightful.

There's something about cabbage cooking that brings back our 'run away!' survival instinct.

This was a new addition to my drug cocktail, after getting off so many. Other than this new one, I think I'm at the bare bones of drugs required to keep me alive; my heart function is at 50% of normal, up from 25% when I got my ICD (pacemaker plus defibrillator) back in 2010, but thanks to scar tissue, I'm about as recovered as I'll ever get. Losing (more) weight wouldn't hurt, either, though since April, 2016 I've lost -- and kept off -- over 35 pounds. Still have an easy (or rather difficult) 35 plus to go.

We all do things wrong and all Christians are all sinners in need of God's grace (Me too), but the clergy and politics and some other professions can have a high number of people who are narcississt and he is a good preacher and teacher.

The latest things came from me telling him that perhaps he shouldn't speak to a parishioner this way. He's a former military chaplain-now back in the local church. He was taking to a fellow who had also spent almost his whole life in the military about another man in his church and he said to the military man-"This guy's a draft dodger" and laughed- thus forcing the second man to say "I had bad feet so I couldn't be drafted." I wrote and said "You made the man have to defend himself. Maybe that was some bonding with the military man but it may have bothered the other guy. I told him you have to be sensitive with people in the church and watch your humor. It's not the military That's when he didn't reply to my e-mail with some request for information. Let me say that he works really hard but I don't think pastoral care is one of his strong points. He's probably great in a crisis on the battlefield. One woman already told me because she's elderly and I gave her a ride-"He's a bully and lacks humility". She can say that. She's the matriarch That was when he first came. He's gotten better apparently.

Sorry to go on and on. Thanks for listening.

647 LOL... Nextdoor thread in my area is someone vandalized a home by knocking down their flag.

surprisingly, most comments were supportive, and agreed it was a terrible thing.

one bint remarked "it's trump America"

my relpy" Deplorables aren't H8rs: We're Dreamers." should be good for some LULZ in the AM.

the other idiot was some buckethead who claimed that his Dad, a 1920's native of the German part of the Sudetenland, had bad things to say about people who respect their country's flag. (vague paraphrase, he was much nastier) and self-righteously ended by asking "any questions?"

i asked him how he felt about people trespassing on his land and destroying his personal property.

that one should be fun too.

that explains much...

yeah, Chaplains aren't great on people skills, in my experience. when you have a captive flock, you don't have to keep them happy, as there isn't another parish nearby to go to instead.

for what it's worth, i believe you were right to make the "on the spot correction", to use the Army phrase, and he's wrong to be upset over it. i'd agree with your assessment that, at least for now, parish life isn't something he's really suited for. bad mouthing a parishioner is just stupid, IMHO.

721 My wife has a friend who is a Democrat screeching howler monkey on FB. She made a comment back to someone on her page about how FOX news was banned in England. I looked it up and near as I can tell, it was due to Hannity saying how the Englanders are causing there own problems because of how they handle the muzzies.

I guess Englanders don't like their government criticized by outsiders.
Can we put in law like that?

722 Village Idiot's Apprentice

Too many troops inside the square in that simulation. British tactics from their colonial wars would have been needed, to form three lines, one prone, one kneeling and one standing. With reserves and a sally force.

Multiple casualties per bullet would have helped a tad. In that stupid simulation there was too much blue on blue, unless they were all on a hill. Then it works fine.

Well isn't that interesting. The government took in more tax revenue in January then it spent. What a concept.

It's almost as if there's something happening -- as if people getting jobs and exiting the dole -- could conceivably balance the federal budget. But I don't know what it is, do I, Mr. Jones?

725 And don't forget.... today is donut day.

About 20 years ago they turned ours into Paczki Day.

I figured it was something really good. Maybe in Poland it is, the ones I've had around here taste like a crappy Bismark donut

Trump was the only fighter in the entire group. That set him apart, and still does a year in.

736 Out of curiosity, since he brought it up, what is Robert Diniro climate chnage policy? Has he committed to reducing his carbon footprint to that of a third world denizen as is being planed for the rest of us?

Every celebrity that harps on about this should be required to produce their personal climate action plan. I want a law,

They have to be super-fresh... The baked dough is very light and gets stale very quickly. And strawberry is the only good kind. :-). I wasn't about to stand in line for 45 minutes at the bakery this year, though.

The ones at the Jewel are basically sugar donuts cut in half. Not like real paczki at all.

That's the kind i had tried. The filling is 5 colors of the same flavor. Cherry? Strawberry? Raspberry? All the same thing. The only way you can tell the difference is the sign in front of the display
