What All British Sports Look Like to Anyone Who Isn't British

The Wobblebottom Rangers are up two plinths and a John Grisham after just four slobberknockers of play.

BTW, I think the stupid witch game of "Quidditch" was readily accepted by readers because all British sports are pretty much that dumb and random anyway.

Except the one where you get drunk and chase w wheel of cheese down a hill -- that makes perfect sense to me.

I always thought there should be a side olympics for normal sports - like the wastebasket toss, the pcancake flip, the grocery bag lift, .. stuff like that. The ability to open the microwave just as the bell rings. Or to walk into the laundry room as the washer unlocks.
I am expert at these sports, and they are as widespread and as important as the ancient games, but sadly they are overlooked.

201 Anonosaurus, I think the song 'Cabaret' was supposed to capture the nihilistic attitude of the German people at that time between the wars. As I understand it, they felt beaten down and hopeless, and 'adult entertainments' there of the time could be as twisted as some of the stuff you'd find on the dark web today.

Oh, it's about three hours twenty minutes.
Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, I Robot, You Jane at February 12, 2018 08:48 PM (+y/Ru)

Per day. For five days.

Basically, it's baseball except:

1. You get choose whether or not to run when you hit the ball

2. If you run, you run to second base

3. Except you don't run - that's not cricket to be seen to try hard - you lope, half-assed

4. If you don't like pitch (bowl), you intentionally bunt it foul

5. The bowler (pitcher) tries to get you out by knocking the stumps off the wicket, three sticks behind the batsman. See, e.g., a strikeout. Hence the expression "sticky wicket" if he hits the sticks, but the stumps don't fall off.

6. The bowler (pitcher) then slowly walks back into another zip code, then runs up into your zip code and throws the ball in a kind of spastic unathletic stiff-armed motion that is required by the rules.

For some reason, even fielders throw with the spastic unathletic stiff-armed motion. I don't know if they're required to do that or not.

7. If the batsman likes his hit, he runs to second base, while one of his teammates who was on second base, runs to where the batsman was. "Running" is an exaggeration; it's more like a slow jog. All either party has to do is reach across the "crease" (a line in the ground) with his bat. Nobody ever actually runs, or (God forbid) slides.

Posted by: Jewells45 at February 12, 2018 09:07 PM (dUJdY)

272
The rules of cricket:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

Yes, that is true.
And, each team member bats once.
Then the other team bats until they are out, or score more than the first team. That's an "inning".
Games are usually one inning.
Sometimes two innings.
And let's not go over 'overs', LOL.

Another aspect I didn't address: the batsman can hit the ball anywhere. If he (in baseball terms) fouls the ball off, he can run, because the opposing team is not only in front of him, but behind him as well.

Every time the batsman and his teammate exchange places is a run. Hitting one out of the pitch (field) is "hitting for six."

Shorter games are decided by which team has the higher rate of scoring, since a full-blown match takes a week. (And you thought baseball was slow.)

314 Now on one hand, the batsman doesn't have to hit the ball well; he just has to prevent it from hitting the wickets, and knocking off the stumps.

OTOH, the bowler can perfectly bounce the ball, and with spin, can make it difficult to anticipate the exact trajectory of the ball after the bounce. (As anyone who's ever tried to field a badly hit baseball can testify.)

368 And one thing I saw in the Aussie/Kiwi show, Deplorable Jay, was that if the active 'batter' is the best one on the team or of the two guys you've got up, you want him to make two 'runs' so that he stays as the active batter instead of the worse batter becoming the active one if they only make the one run. Correction... I guess I should say make an even number of runs as you can score more than one run at an 'at bat'.

And I thought the slow running was because you're playing for five days and not a 3-hour game; and it's easier to be 'thrown out'.

We actually have four. Two in Van Cortlandt Park, one in Pelham Bay Park.

And Trump at Ferry Point Park. It's new and right next to the Bronx side of the Whitestone Bridge. Ferry Point Park never got built for like 60 years and became a garbage dump and Mafia burial ground (i have a good source that the finding of 60 bodies had to be suppressed so that Trump could break ground).

Way too defensively based.

And the biggie: a "no flopping" rule.

When I lived in Europe I played in a departmental soccer game. I had the ball, and some little twit stepped in front of me. Now I wasn't big enough to do this generally in football, but I freight-trained him. "Son, you're not big enough to step in front of me."

Turns out that's against the rules. My bad. But for the rest of the game, all the opposing players were leery of me.

I've often found it amusing that a lot of sports involve furiously swatting a ball with a stick.

Baseball
Golf
Hurling
Field Hockey
Shinty
Cricket
Lacrosse (only the early version, before the stick had a net added)
Bando
Camogie

Ice Hockey goes on the list because the puck is just a flattened ball.

And it's no accident that most of these games were invented by drunken Celts.
