The Morning Report 2/9/18

deal.jpg

Good morning kids. The weekend is here, thank goodness. Between the wild swings in the stock market, the continuing revelations and confirmation that our government and those charged with enforcing our laws and keeping us safe are what amounts to the Tonton Macoute on the Potomac and a news media that acts as cheerleaders instead of watchdogs, I for one welcome the two-day respite to stay the hell away from the computer and get away from it all.

But our lead story perfectly illustrates why we have a Deep State - to rob us and our posterity blind in order to pay for our own destruction at their hands. Last night, the government briefly shut down as the debate over two-year budget bill went into the wee hours. The good Rand Paul (and not Luap the Lesser) showed up and did his best to focus some attention on this insanity. If you listened to Rush yesterday, you could hear the exasperation in his voice over this. The GOP since forever has been depicted as the cruel bastards who would take food out of the mouths of little brown children, throw granny off of a cliff and dump toxic waste into our water supplies because, evil! Yeah, I get that; they don't want to deal with that until after the midterms. But one also has to recognize that they too live and eat off of an ever-growing and strangulating bureaucracy.

Mr. President, you came to Washington as an outsider and vowed to drain the swamp. The forces arrayed against you in the Deep State have themselves vowed to destroy you for personal reasons and to keep their domain growing. This budget represents everything they are fighting to maintain. The money, the power, the corruption and the dissolution of America that it pays for, in the end. If you truly want to defeat them, if you truly want to drain the swamp, the only way to do this is to draw a line, in ink, on that bill with one word:

VETO

In related news, Bette Midler is a slag, suspected intern murderer Joe Scarborough ate a bit of crow, while from hither and yon CVS is voluntarily raising its minimum wage due to the positive effects of Tax Reform, American oil is booming, there is still major unrest within Iran that has been all but ignored and lastly a very disturbing report about a terror arrest in Oklahoma.

UPDATE: That last article about the terror arrest really makes my blood boil, considering that the focus of the FBI is the removal of a duly elected president from office. Abolish the friggin' FBI - before they get us all killed.

Anyway, links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.

But a balanced budget? Fuggidaboutit. That's not our future, regardless of the party in power.

59 "But a balanced budget? Fuggidaboutit. That's not our future, regardless of the party in power."

The political pressure from the population to balance the budget is not there, and crying and whining and ranting about it is not going to change that. The pressure to balance the budget will happen when it must happen, and not much before then.

What was that phrase about "doing the right thing when all else fails?" That applies here.

Posted by: Mikey NTH - Swamp Waders 50% Off at the Outrage Outlet! at February 09, 2018 07:38 AM (hLRSq)

60 Get over the budget deal. This is how Congress I supposed to work. We have not had regular order for a little by time and the President is correct. This is mostly about our military. Democrats through the last caps have starved them of resources. If you know anyone in the military, you know this. It is dangerous and irresponsible. It can not continue.

The way you reduce the size of government is one agency at a time. You rip it out from the heart. That is what Trumps appointees are doing. The budget requests will shrink.

We also have an economy and conditions to shrink the deficit through increased revenue.

It is time to play the long game.

But I reiterate: The fight against the Deep State and the fight against this out of control spending and borrowing is the same fight. Just two different fronts. I understand your concern. But the way to win is to beat Democrats at their own game.

There is zero reason for the requests that Schumer made. None. We do not need an increase in those programs.

But if you shrink those programs the budget requests get smaller. You have to look at reforms and changes that will shrink requests.

Democrats did this to grow those agencies and programs, we need to turn those weapons on them, and look at some of the brilliant stuff people like Mulvaney are doing.

Young became a pious Catholic later in life (some speculate as penance for having Clark Gable's child out of wedlock), and, as you might imagine, her vocal advocacy pissed off a lot of Hollywood folk, who nicknamed her "Gretch the Wretch" (her real name being Gretchen Young).

One story has Joan Crawford (who ranks in bitchiness second only to Bette Davis) once shooing someone away from a chair by saying, "Loretta Young just got up - the seat still has the sign of the cross on it!"

165 I don't believe any study or poll anymore that supports the leftist agenda and that one about conservatives and fake news is typical..

I saw a recent poll/study that was in the local news that showed the overwhelming number of voters in the Atalanta area supported higher taxes for better schools. Another obvious deception and looking at poll quickly confirmed it.

1. There is no guarantee that more taxes = better schools. This was obvious not mentioned in the polling.
2. The questions were put to voters, not taxpayers.
3. The question was phrased to ask if they would support higher taxes, which in many peoples minds means somebody else, usually rich people or business..
4. The question should have been posed as: would you support YOUR taxes going up $1000 to increase school spending?. Which may or may not improve education.

Of course the FSA supported more taxes for better schools. They always do. And look at how well that has turned out. (Another item not mentioned in the poll.)

Young, who looks appropriately devout in this image, was nicknamed "The Iron Madonna" due to her rigidly conservative Catholic views. She kept a "swear jar" on the sets of her films and obliged cast and crew members who were overheard to utter naughty words to drop a coin into the swear box, the money to be contributed later to the church. One story, possibly apochryphal, has Ethel Merman dropping in on a set where Young was filming and observing that the set was "damn nice." Young grabs the swear jar and says, "Now, Ethel, you know I don't allow swearing on the set. That will cost you a nickel." Merman reaches into her purse and snorts, "Here's a buck, Loretta. Go f*** yourself!"

That is not to deny all the good things he has done, or to withdraw support, or anything like that. And I'm glad Sefton hasn't gone along, and hope he holds the course when Trump does go along. I'm more than a bit dismayed that, since the election, Mark Steyn has pulled way back on the "brokest nation in history" talk. One danger to us is to become the very robots our enemies think we are. I've seen it happen. We overdid our support for Nixon and the Bushes, after all.

Impoundment is an act by a President of the United States of not spending money that has been appropriated by the U.S. Congress. Thomas Jefferson was the first president to exercise the power of impoundment in 1801. The power was available to all presidents up to and including Richard Nixon, and was regarded as a power inherent to the office. The Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 was passed in response to perceived abuse of the power under President Nixon. Title X of the Act removed that power, and Train v. City of New York (whose facts predate the 1974 Act, but which was argued before the U.S. Supreme Court after its passage), closed potential loopholes in the 1974 Act. The president's ability to indefinitely reject congressionally approved spending was thus removed.

People still think the whole "unintended acceleration" thing was Toyota's fault. It was drivers jamming their foot down on the wrong pedal. NHTSA confirmed it:

"We found that when a complaint alleged the brakes didn't work, what
most likely happened was pedal misapplication," said deputy NHTSA
administrator Ron Medford.

Still cost Toyota billions and prompted billions more in tech to research and "fix" the problem of sh*tty drivers.

"Dyson Airblade hand-driers spread 60 times more germs than standard air dryers, and 1,300 times more than standard paper towels, according to research published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology.

University of Westminster researchers carrying out the research dipped their hands into water containing a harmless virus. They then dried their hands with either a Dyson Airblade, a standard hot-air dryer, or a paper towel.

According to their findings, the Dyson drier's 430mph blasts of air are capable of spreading viruses up to 3 meters across a bathroom. The standard drier spread viruses 75cm, and the hand towels 25cm."

519 I really don't get why anyone would be very depressed about the political situation - remember, this is War, not normal times. Overall, we're advancing and the enemy is giving up ground, step by step. But remember that wars are hard. There are days when you think things are good as you advance across France, and the SS pops up and shoots you advance column to pieces, and you have to regroup. So you pull back, and reevalute, and find out how to flank them.
That's war.

Also, to fight and win a war, you have to understand your own forces. The House is an ally, but a weak one, meaning it will fold in any hard concentration. You have to be nice to them, but never really trust them.
Now the Senate - you have to admit that America's Enemies control an easy 51 votes in the current Senate, maybe 60 at times. And the leader of the Senate is Quisling reborn. The only good part is that they're not just traitors, they're greedy traitors, so they can be bought off, and you can use them to accomplish your goals as long as you toss boatloads of cash at them fairly often.

So that's the situation - under those circumstances, that budget deal was the best outcome we should ever have hoped for. Not that it was good, but that the possibility of anything better was just a fantasy.

Now should we blow everything up because of that? No, because we're still in that damned war, and if we blow everything up our enemies win and they will spend the rest of eternity tap dancing on our graves. No one cares how much money you spend in a war, in fact it's pretty standard to bankrupt yourself and spend the next 50 years digging out of the hole for any country that's in a war.

But you gotta win the war anyways. Win it for hate's sake, if nothing else.

According to the article planted in the NYT on December 30, the FBI claims they were given the information on Pap in July of 2016 and that's when they started the Trump investigation.

Of course they are lying. They were spying before that. But if they had the information then and claim that it was used as a basis to start the investigation it is quite possible that they used it in the FISA warrant much as they knowingly used Clinton campaign documents in the FISA warrant.

I actually want to watch the Olympics, and gave it a try last night as some of the events are underway.

Unfortunately, Comcast has decided to replace the Olympics filter (which worked like the filters for favorites and HD channels, in that it still looked like the basic channel guide) with this massive display of graphics where times and channels only appear if you select a particular graphic. I couldn't even tell you looking at this mess what channels they're *going* to be on aside from NBC and NBCSN, and I'm pretty sure many of those are not on my favorites list.

So, good job to whoever made that decision.

Agreed, completely. Again and again, this is not a normal political conflict. This is War. In the spring of 1945, what was more important - holding trials for captured SS members, or taking Berlin?

Nothing mattered at all except taking Berlin. Once Berlin was taken, and forces defeated, then mopping up can start. Criminal trials are the result of Victory, not the cause of it.

And no, of course the GOP-e Senators cannot be trusted - we should be grateful that at least they are so corrupt that they can be bought. That's just the nature of what we have to deal with. But if you want a happy thought, think of how many of them will be gone by next January. And I include McCain in that group.

No, they just look like they are. They are hard to prosecute for the same reason any professional criminal is hard to prosecute; they cover their tracks really well. Remember the government only got Al Capone on tax evasion.

The only way they are impervious is if everyone takes your point of view and gives up trying. If the Democrats realize the only way they can get anyone else to run for President is for Frau Grupencancles to wear an orange jump suit - she'll be in prison faster than crack dealer selling to a narc.
