AP: Congress' Insistence on Conducting Legal Oversight May "Cause" Intelligence Agencies to Stop Providing Congress with the Information They are Legally Required to Provide It With
Shorter Deep State: Lawful Congressional actions to hold us accountable jeopardize national security, by which we mean "our job security," so we're now forced to make ourselves even less accountable, and start breaking the law even more brazenly.
But let's get back to that in a moment. The idea that The Memo will jeopardize intel agencies complying with Congressional demands for information (which they already routinely illegally refuse) is based on the idea that The Memo allegedly revealed national security secrets. That's a lie. They made that claim when they were seeking to block the release of The Memo, and then, when it came out and it was seen by all that there was nothing compromising to national security in the memo, they pretended they'd never made that dishonest claim about national security and, get this, the media pretended along with them, and completely memory-holed that dishonest claim. Derek Hunter makes this point in a column titled, bluntly, Journalism Is Dead.Of course, that charge of dishonesty also applies to the intelligence agencies and the FBI. The FBI originally claimed that the memo exposed national secrets, and then later walked that back to "misleadingly omits material information. But they'd already injected the lie into the public bloodstream, which Democrats were happy to spread further. Jonathan Turley also wants to know where all this "national security/sources and methods" information is, and why the FBI and intel agencies claimed it was in the memo when it, now obvious to all, was not.
This week we saw a perfect example of how corrupt journalism has become. There was an opportunity to report the news and journalists and their fellow travelers in the pundit class balked. While that wasn't unusual, what was is how they did it in the lead up to the news, not bothering to wait until they'd seen what they were attempting to discredit. There was an unprecedented attempt to make the release of the FISA memo NOT NEWS before anyone knew what was in it. Over the past two weeks, Democrats scrambled to "warn" the public that the release of the FISA memo would "damage national security" were it released. Journalists picked up the mantra and ran with it, unquestioningly parroting it in badgering Republicans about why they would support its release considering this charge. There was virtually no discussion as to whether or not this allegation was true or an attempted partisan distraction, it was simply accepted and repeated as if it had been carved into stone tablets by a burning bush and sent directly to the teleprompter in their TV studios. The memo, of course, was nothing of the sort. There was nothing that was a threat in any way to national security, no remote mention of sources or methods. It was all a Democratic Party lie immediately adopted by journalists. As with past false stories that needed to be retracted or corrected, there was no comeuppance for those who spread the lie to the media, nor the media figures who regurgitated it. It happened, and when it was proven to be a lie, it was memory-holed. (This story on the subject to not even mention it.) The lying by Democrats in the lead up to the memo's release wasn’t surprising, nor was the complicity of journalists in spreading that lie. What was is how there was virtually no curiosity or interest in the memo and its contents in the days leading to its release from the people whose job it is supposed to be to convey information to the public. All journalists did was attempt to taint it’s release so as to foster disinterest in it in their audience when they could finally see it.
So now we have the intelligence agencies and FBI warning Congress that they may no longer play the game of partial, slow-walked compliance with Congressional subpeonas, but may just cut out the middleman and announce that they are now Sovereign Government Agencies unaccountable to the public and independent of any oversight or direction from the elected branches of government.
[M]y greatest concern is what is not in the dossier: classified information "jeopardizing national security." Leaders like Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared that the committee had moved beyond "dangerous irresponsibility and disregard for our national security" and "disregarded the warnings of the Justice Department and the FBI." Now we can read the memo. There is a sharp and alarming disconnect between the descriptions of Pelosi and the House Intelligence Committee’s Ranking Minority Member Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and the actual document. It clearly does not contain information that would reveal sources or methods. The memo reaffirms concerns over the lower standards that apply to FISA applications as well as the misuse of classification authority. Most of this memo references what was already known about the use of the dossier. What was added was testimonial evidence and details to the publicly known information. Yet, the FBI vehemently objected to the release of the memo as threatening "grave" consequences to national security ground. However, even before the release, the FBI seemed to be objecting to the framing of the facts rather than the disclosure of "sources and methods." The FBI said publicly that it had "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy." That is not an objection to classified material but the fairness of the portrayal. For years, many of us have objected that the intelligence agencies classified material for improper purposes to frame public debate or conceal embarrassing information. Unless there was a material change in this memo, it proved to be an empty "grave" after weeks of overheated hyperbole. The FBI opposition to declassification of this memo should be a focus of both Congress and the public.

Yeah, well, there were zero episodes where their CI "Huggy Bear" did multiple rounds of Press Availabilities with the NYT, CNN, the AP, Mother Jones and fucking Yahoo News. They guy was basically Lisa Bloom with a British accent. Press whores don't get to call themselves "confidential informants."
... Former CIA Director Mike Hayden worries that the memo’s release will damage congressional oversight and the effectiveness of law enforcement. "We are chiseling away at processes and institutions on which we currently depend-- and on which we will depend in the future," said Hayden, who has worked for both Democratic and Republican administrations.Again, the "processes and institutions" he's talking about being weakened are the FBI and intel agencies acting as if they are sovereign entities that answer to no authority but whatever political stooge happens to have been appointed as their boss for 4 or six years. As far as the public, the Congress, and the President: Fuck them. What do they know? We're the Priesthood of Intelligence. No one gets to contradict us, critique us, or even us orders. Who knows, maybe that's been their goal all along. Or maybe they were just operating 99% under that mindset and now, peeved by someone challenging their 99% lack of accountability, are threatening to unconstitutionally arrogate to themselves the status of being fourth, fifth, and sixth co-equal branches of government, that are really better than the other three branches, because they're entirely untainted by that "democratic election" and "consent of the governed" and "public accountability" baggage.

Or to damage rival agencies inside the government. Then there's the spying, the stealing, the killing...not inflicted on our enemies, no, on the citizens.

And back in the 70s, I remember well the good arguments for how too much congressional "oversight" and control was bad for intelligence, because too much of it has to be done with as few people as possible being aware of its work. Congress has proven beyond any sane doubt that it cannot be trusted with secrets.
But because of their nature, intelligence operations must have oversight and accountability, because it is way too easy to convince yourself that what you're doing is Too Important For Those People To Understand and since your very job is to break rules and violate basic decency and societal limits (Gentlemen do not read other peoples' mail) that it tends very quickly and easily to get out of control.

There's a great documentary on Netflix called the 87 where they show how an entire precinct in the NYC police department basically went corrupt within months of a new recruit coming in who was essentially just a mobster with a uniform. It took years before they were finally taken down, because the NYPD really didn't want the bad publicity and couldn't believe it was that bad.
When the Justice Department is in it with the President of the USA, who do you get to stop them? How do you police them? What force is there to keep them in line?

Institutions aren't necessarily corrupt. It's the people in them and the temptations they have. You have to start with the premise that human beings are fallible and try to design systems and processes that can keep them in check as best as they can.
But given Obama and the Leftward trajectory of the nation since at least 1965, that was always going to be problematic because the corruption is ideologically motivated more than it is money.

I agree, I think that this kind of thing is actually pretty easy to clean up. Its almost always a small number of really bad actors corrupting and tainting weaker people around them. With good, strong leadership, you can clean things up pretty quickly. Then you start to replace the dead wood and poor workers, the sycophants and people who assisted the main bad guys, and maybe you can save some of these agencies.
I'd much rather see reformation of the FBI than removal. But the NSA and the DHS? I don't think those need to exist at all, at least not in their current form.
When the Goresuch wall was revealed, the right thing to do was not to create a monstrous new super-agency that was allowed to spy on EVERYONE, but rather a clearing house, a small agency with a system that made sure important and useful stuff was shared.
My problem with the PATRIOT act isn't its existence, but rather its origins. Its simply the RICO act expanded to intelligence, and while I don't like mobsters, I think their lawyers have a very good point that it is rife with civil rights violations and unconstitutional principles in the name of "we gotta get the bad guys."

Ryan and McConnell, and others, are now showing just how unfit they are for important positions. Congress needs to not just restore its oversight, but b-slap the defiant executive agencies, publicly, and make them grovel for their budgets.
In the case of the Uranium-1 informant, Trump (reportedly) called DOJ and told them "tear up the non-disclosure, now" - and it was done.
WTFFFFF kind of advice is Trump getting on actually putting the FBI and DOJ under his control???? Call in Wray et al. Order them to fully cooperate with legitimate congressional oversight, or resign on the spot and be replaced.
There is no political risk in doing his job. Trump, not just for his own sake, needs to start fixing these agencies. It is apparent that the rot, the incredible arrogance and misunderstanding of their subordinate position, is now rife. There must be (bureaucratic) blood.

The movie was Alfred Hitchcock's "Saboteur" from 1942.
It's the story of an innocent man who stumbles upon a nationwide group of saboteurs during an act of sabotage. He's blamed for the sabotage and escapes to clear his name.
Toward the end, the hero finally confronts the mastermind. And the mastermind starts to monologue...
The Saboteur mastermind's speech starts exactly, exactly with a 1942 version of Hillary's "Deplorables" speech and proceeds in rapid fashion thru a version of Thomas Friedman's love of the efficiency of totalitarian China through Jimmie Kimmel's IQ blathering through something you just know Hillary/Obama/Soros/Steyer/Zuckerberg/Google's board/etc all think in their quietest moments.

My husband went to the Olympics in Atlanta to visit his brother, who was playing on the National Volleyball Team. They are both ridiculously tall and my husband is built like a wrestler as well. What we're seeing is insane, and unthinkable not that long ago, but perfectly logical, given the incentives and behavior we have seen for a while now.
Congressional GOP is, sadly but obviously, completely unable or unwilling to do anything here. It's pretty much all on Trump. He either controls events - and does his job - by controlling these agencies, or ..... events may control him, and are certain to control all of us in the medium to long term.

1) public employee unions are coming

I agree, although Blade had less of a Superhero film than an action/supernatural feel to it, so maybe that's what they have in mind.
I like Black Panther quite a bit, but its pretty obvious that the reaction to it has more to do with hype and clever publicity about blacks than it does anything actually in the movie.
Like all the ridiculous nonsense when Wonder Woman came out with people pretending it was transformative and little girls lives were being changed by seeing the movie.

Yes, but that's why the hearings need to be televised nationally - to circumvent the MSM. Sure, at first only a small contingent will watch, but when word of fireworks gets out, others will tune in, and still others will watch on Youtube.
We need sunlight, and hearings provide that. Any special counsel investigation can be buried, spun, or misrepresented. But live hearings cannot.

The vast majority have nothing to do with this particular scandal... but there are enough scandals to go around The Bundy situation. the FBI lab falsifying evidence FOR DECADES. Murdering American citizens that they consider unpeople. It is the organization itself that is rotten to the core. The FBI needs to go and that is not hyperbole.
