I agree with what someone wrote in the last thread, that they don't seem to count inner city shootouts on school b-ball courts or yards. That would make the number too ridiculous, I guess.

This was a very big deal. The most powerful rocket in the world today is a great deal cheaper than the second most powerful one (Delta IV Heavy).

I always said that the first Falcon Heavy launch should have sent an unmanned Dragon spacecraft on a circumlunar flight, because it would show the general public that we are not as far away from being able to go back to the moon as they think.
But now I like Elon's idea of sending Starman and the Roadster into solar orbit. It captured the public's imagination like nothing else could have. And that's a good thing. We want to get people excited about space flight. Nobody has been able to do that since the Apollo era.
Also, I'm not aware of any previous rocket that has sent a payload into orbit around the Sun on its first test flight.

Each of those cores has one engine, for a total of three.
Each Falcon Heavy core has 9 less powerful engines, for a total of 27.
SpaceX claims that they can lose an engine or two and still make it to orbit. Obviously, if any of the three Delta IV Heavy engines failed, it would be toast.
Many experienced and knowledgeable space experts were skeptical of the Falcon Heavy, because the Soviet N-1 moon rocket had 30 engines and never made it to orbit, failing catastrophically in four launch attempts between 1969 and 1972.
But SpaceX has proven that a large number of engines can work, and that gives the rocket some flexibility.

One of the Falcon 9 engines did in fact shut down on the way up in 2012 and the aerodynamic forces, in absence of the pressure from the engine, did cause it to blow out part of the fairing in a pretty festive manner:

The payload of chicken tendies and fresh underwear for the ISS was delivered without incident (the secondary payload failed to reach orbit but I can't seem to find if it was related to the engine failure).

That happened at almost exactly the same point in the flight as the Challenger explosion.
But Falcon 9 became Falcon 8 and kept chugging right along.
The primary payload, the Dragon cargo capsule, made it to the ISS. The secondary payload was a test satellite that did not make it to a useful orbit.
But that was because of NASA mission rules. The second stage was not allowed to restart because it was not certain that it wouldn't put the secondary payload into an orbit that might endanger the ISS.
I'm not blaming the NASA mission rules, and every participant knew them going in.
