Baller Moon, Brah

This is from weeks ago. But it's worth gawking at.

Open thread.

Oh, if you didn't get enough of the Arms Control Apocalypse today, the Washington Post actually pointed out that Everytown USA's claim that this was the "18th School Shooting This Year" is a gigantic lie. (Safe link to John Sexton.)

Oh, and as long as I'm linking weeks-old stuff, re-enjoy the Falcon Heavy Rocket test flight footage. The booster rockets re-landing side-by-side is terrific.

I saw that claim on the local news yesterday. But, at least, they mentioned later that they meant that there had been 18 incidents of gun discharges on school grounds ... which means who knows what.

I agree with what someone wrote in the last thread, that they don't seem to count inner city shootouts on school b-ball courts or yards. That would make the number too ridiculous, I guess.

20 Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper, 'Please adore me'
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold
Blue Moon, now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own....

I did a double take and had to tell him the truth which was the country was evil and killed its own people. I felt kinda bad as I could see it crush him and confuse him, I don't think he could fathom what I told him NK does.

I asked him if it was too late to change countries and that if it was I'd help him write his report but tell the truth.

91 Thanks, ace for featuring the Falcon Heavy webcast!

That launch was eagerly awaited for years, and SpaceX said that strapping three Falcon 9s turned out to be a lot more difficult than they originally thought. Elon himself gave it a 50-50 chance for success in an interview a couple of days before.

Everybody, go watch the whole thing in HD on full screen with the audio turned up to eleventy.

I watched it live, and then commented, "I'm glad I have cancer instead of a weak heart, because I would not have survived that."

I watch every SpaceX launch. The booster landings have practically become routine.

What took my heart rate into the stratosphere was watching that magnificent beast soar into the heavens flying straight and true, without blowing up on the pad or shaking itself to pieces in midair.

This was a very big deal. The most powerful rocket in the world today is a great deal cheaper than the second most powerful one (Delta IV Heavy).

I always said that the first Falcon Heavy launch should have sent an unmanned Dragon spacecraft on a circumlunar flight, because it would show the general public that we are not as far away from being able to go back to the moon as they think.

But now I like Elon's idea of sending Starman and the Roadster into solar orbit. It captured the public's imagination like nothing else could have. And that's a good thing. We want to get people excited about space flight. Nobody has been able to do that since the Apollo era.

Also, I'm not aware of any previous rocket that has sent a payload into orbit around the Sun on its first test flight.

190 The Falcon Heavy is roughly twice as powerful at liftoff than the second most powerful rocket, the Delta IV Heavy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCy401hkXuk

Each of those cores has one engine, for a total of three.

Each Falcon Heavy core has 9 less powerful engines, for a total of 27.

SpaceX claims that they can lose an engine or two and still make it to orbit. Obviously, if any of the three Delta IV Heavy engines failed, it would be toast.

Many experienced and knowledgeable space experts were skeptical of the Falcon Heavy, because the Soviet N-1 moon rocket had 30 engines and never made it to orbit, failing catastrophically in four launch attempts between 1969 and 1972.

But SpaceX has proven that a large number of engines can work, and that gives the rocket some flexibility.

One of the Falcon 9 engines did in fact shut down on the way up in 2012 and the aerodynamic forces, in absence of the pressure from the engine, did cause it to blow out part of the fairing in a pretty festive manner:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=22&v=y6zsZiVa998

The payload of chicken tendies and fresh underwear for the ISS was delivered without incident (the secondary payload failed to reach orbit but I can't seem to find if it was related to the engine failure).

Posted by: hogmartin at February 15, 2018 09:17 PM (y87Qq)

That happened at almost exactly the same point in the flight as the Challenger explosion.

But Falcon 9 became Falcon 8 and kept chugging right along.

The primary payload, the Dragon cargo capsule, made it to the ISS. The secondary payload was a test satellite that did not make it to a useful orbit.

But that was because of NASA mission rules. The second stage was not allowed to restart because it was not certain that it wouldn't put the secondary payload into an orbit that might endanger the ISS.

I'm not blaming the NASA mission rules, and every participant knew them going in.

345 We need to energistically optimize professional leadership by monotonectally generating enabled core competencies in order to progressively reintermediate and go forward on customer service. Our first priority must be to competently facilitate process-centric networks and competently facilitate process-centric networks. Once this is done we will have the ability to progressively leverage existing one-to-one action items using synergy.

346 344. I ended some of that with my legendary 'Kaizen is Muda,' PowerPoint at one employer.

347 I LOVE ESTES!!! I hope most of you here who have children helped that boy or girl build an Estes kit. Back in the day as a teen I lived on White Sands Missile Range. The experience opened my eyes as to what could be in rocketry. At the time my father was in the Navy and while there was assigned to the Taos and Aerobee rocket program. Bravo for Falcon Heavy.

348 Little known fact, Black Panther will be the first movie using actual black actors. All movies before this used Europeans in makeup.

Did you see this? Three days before SpaceX launched the largest rocket in the world, Japan set a record for the smallest rocket ever to orbit a satellite, which weighed about 7 pounds.

It was basically a large three-stage Estes rocket.

350 I thought that was a beautiful and serendipitous juxtaposition between the smallest and largest rockets in consecutive launches. Nobody planned it that way; it just happened.

There are important roles to play with both large and small rockets going forward.

351 Kaizen and 6 Sigma put my employer nearly out of business.
You can document everything to the nth degree, collect data until you can choke a spreadsheet.

Does that activity put a product out the door that the customer sends you money for?
A product that the customer likes and tells his buddies to "buy some of these, they're great!"

Nope. Got Yottabytes of data though.

352 Being older than dirt, I watched JFK deliver his going to the moon speech. Following that, it seemed like Cape Canaveral was launching something every other day. I remember John Glenn orbiting Earth for the first time. I remember the moon landings.

One day, in the late '80s, I suddenly realized we weren't launching nothing. Then we started the shuttle program. I cried when Challenger blew up, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Watching Elon Musk's SpaceX program is a dream come true. We're doing it! We are really and truly going back into space! I just hope I live long enough to see a sustainable colony on the moon and a walk on Mars.
