Music has charms to soothe a savage breast, To soften rocks or bend a knotted oak.
-- William Congreve
Hell is full of musical amateurs: music is the brandy of the damned.
-- George Bernard Shaw
Of course the music is a great difficulty. You see, if one plays good music, people don't listen, and if one plays bad music people don't talk.
-- Oscar Wilde
******

There are seven music videos below the fold. The first Moron (and moron) to listen to all seven gets a two year Platinum Membership with Troll-B-GonTM and ampersand utility, and the never-before-offered smart-quote add-on.

Any vomiting or retching before the videos are watched (and listened to) in their entirety voids the contest. Any kicking of family pets, punting of children or shooting out street lamps is also strictly forbidden.

Judging parameters are loosely based on the awfulness of the song, the awkwardness of the dancing, ridiculous production techniques. the embarrassing costumes, and of course cringeworthy hairstyles are worth extra points.

I don't think it was fair to include Middle of the Road's 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' in there. It is representative of a certain kind of the mindless pop genre of that era known as bubblegum music, akin to 'Sugar Sugar' and 'Love Potion Number 9'. That kind of music never pretended to be anything more than it was. It was something an eight-year-old would play on his first transistor radio.

Used to want it all
I used to be somebody

Bowie and Jagger really get their ghey going in this video, and the peeps that made it silent and dubbed it made it brilliant. (If that *wasn't* dubbed, it's even more horribly hilarious.)

235 I have the same strong feeling that a lot of people do that "judged" artistic events do not belong in the Olympics. However your Olympics has never agreed whatsoever. In the earlier modern Olympics, they had gold medals for Sculpture, and for Poetry.

What changed was, in the Riefenstahl Five-RIngs era people got the notion that it was an athletic-only competition. It wasn't conceived that way.

Now, "we" can make it into whatever we want to watch. "We" seem to be going in a bad direction. "We" seem to be doing as much child-molesting as a UN Peacekeeping force, too, for whatever that's worth.

Makes you wonder if there's any legit future in any multi-national institutional activities. But I have a prejudice, or, post-judice you might call it. They killed my sport.

I am the son

Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
When you say it's gonna happen "now"
Well when exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Read up on the *analog* firing solution computers they used for those big guns. I read descriptions of the control system keeping the guns at the right attitude as the ship rocked back and forth. Observing from the ship, the guns would appear to be moving up and down and and back and forth.

But relative to a stationary frame, they were holding a constant firing position.

And it was electro-mechanical analog computers controlling that.

According to my Pop, it was something to see on the receiving end also. During a nighttime action in Korea, while serving with a Marine forward unit, a battleship was dropping in rounds onto the opposing Chinese troops. He said since they were near the end of their arc they would affect the air pressure around you and felt like boxcars swooshing past. Even though landing hundreds of yards away, they were collapsing bunkers and dugouts on our side too.

The surviving Chinese bled from their ears and eyes and were so unnerved by the bombardment they couldn't even raise their arms to surrender or speak. They just sat/laid there.

You'll be safe in presuming that the ship did not capsize.

Notice though, the circular concussion "bubble" zones. Yes, they complete the circle over the deck, but the shock wave isn't visible there, as it is over the water.

ANY. LIVING. BEING., finding itself within that concussive zone (such as a sailor on deck or Cher astride of of the 16 in. 50 caliber guns)... simply, DIES

USS Missouri firing broadside:

https://tinyurl.com/y8nf3kzw

The ship was barely making way ahead, when this was taken. Hence, one can see the lateral movement of the ship from the recoil of the guns.

However, once a given Battleship was cruising at anything above 10 knots or so, the hydrodynamic pressure against the hull was greater than the recoil force of the guns, and thus no observable lateral movement.

Might've BEEN some, but that'd have been a sensor/instrumented measurement, not a gross movement observable by eye alone.

Oh, another aspect of the blast effect of the big Sixteen Inchers. The resultant pressure of air being sucked back in to the zone of the collapsing concussion bubble, could suck a sailor right off the deck and into the drink.

And in a fight, they don't turn back to pick 'em up.

Yes. He was belowdecks when it happened. Hit his head and was knocked unconscious pretty much for the duration of the battle. He talked it as if he was somehow ashamed that all he did was get knocked out. We--his family--saw it far differently.

Oh, and yeah: the USS Belleau Wood was one of the ships tagged for the initial invasion of Japan. When word of the bomb came, my Stepfather said grown men broke down and cried like little kids with relief. That crew had been through all of the major campaigns in the Pacific. -------------------------

Yup. It's a pity that every last one of them was sunk or scrapped at the end of the war. The only IJN ships that survived the end of the war were the ones that were handed off to the Chinese Nationalists (I don't think anyone else got any). IIRC, the only surviving piece of an IJN ship is the anchor from the destroyer Yukikaze, which the Republic of China returned to Japan after scrapping the rest of the ship when they retired it.

It's a pity. It'd be pretty neat to take a tour of the Yamato. But their fleet had to be destroyed.

420 Asheville that's quite a story about the forebears with the identical names and mixed up mail.

Pretty sure Okinawa saw the greatest material and personnel losses in US Navy history (by a large margin) - a battle where the enemy navy never even put in an appearance (Yamato was headed that way but never had a chance of getting close, of course).

"At War with the Wind" is a book on this I can recommend. I did some scuba at Kerama Retto, the small islands off Naha, Okinawa, the time I visited the island. From that book mentioned above, a few years later, I read how the area where I'd been diving had been the "infirmary" where they towed kamikaze'd ships to assess damage, prepare for trans-oceanic towing to repair yards ..... and recovered remains. Book starts with that part. Very rough.

435 Old Blue, yes - visited Yasukuni shrine. Of course the museum was the draw - I wasn't going to offend Korea or China (!). Excellent museum.

But, when I visited (2006?), a twist.

In the exhibit on the "China incident" (ahemm), there was a panel on Nanking. The English text was ..... so amazing I laughed out loud (I checked with the boss, she confirmed the Japanese text read the same). Summarized: there was a stand-off with Chinese forces; then the IJA succeeded in taking the city, after which "life could return to normal" (I remember those exact words).

"Normal", I guess, meaning biological warfare experiments on the populace, beheading contests, and medieval rapine and butchery!

I read that China was so p'od by that panel that they complained - oddly, they complained by having the US ambassador in Tokyo go to the foreign ministry with the complaint (have never understood why no direct approach was made). Anyway, it worked. I imagine when Japanese for. min. and US embassy people saw it, they reacted like I did.

Anyway, excellent museum otherwise.

439 @401 There was a turret and gun from a famous Japanese surface ship, but can't recall if it was from a WWII ship or pre-war ship.
----------------

It is. It's from the Mutsu. There's a tragic story there...

The Mutsu returned to port in 1943 (I think), and then suffered a mysterious magazine explosion while in port and sank. Roughly eighty percent of her crew went down with her. Investigators came to the conclusion that the explosion was the work of a disgruntled seaman, although my understanding is that there's room for doubt about that. The only thing that's certain is that the Allies weren't involved.

At the time, the Japanese government decided to cover up the loss of the ship. Survivors were sent to various Pacific islands, where they no doubt all died not long after during the Allied campaigns to retake those islands. The gun was apparently recovered during a salvage operation in the '60s (I just checked). The turret is one that was replaced during a refit in the '30s.

Don't know why I'm skeptical about those, but I am. The largest detonated nuclear weapon was the Russian's Tsar Bomba at 50 megatons. The weapon was so large it could not be carried in the bomb bay. Torpedo tubes only have x dimension so you're talking fitting a huge warhead in a relatively small tube. You won't have much room left over for propulsion.

Something like that is more of a strategic bombardment weapon. You don't aim it at ships. You aim it at a harbor. If it can get in undetected, then it doesn't matter how fast it goes so long as it gets there.

I understand the confusion. These are not submarine launched, from tubes at least. These are 75 footers that might lie on the deck of a sub. But, they can just pull out of port like any other nasty thing. Very fast, very deep, autonomous, able to evade, huge warheads, devastating. Too deep for satellites to detect, too fast for conventional deterrence. You've know for years that the Iranians have very fast torpedoes that can be launched from ships, and these babies are the basis of that nightmare.

Tsar Bomba could've been twice the yield, 100 MT, if they had included the U-238 out case for a third-stage. Well, I think properly, that's not called a stage, proper, I forget.

But they didn't use it, because of the fallout. It would've fouled their own nest big time, and they knew it.

A victim of their own success, I guess. Overly crowded as you noted and terrible service (yes, for a pizza joint). Last time I went (couple of years ago), waited an hour for our pizza, and they ended up screwing up the order (forgot the cheese, if I recall correctly). Plus, their house-brewed root beer, which I rather enjoy with pizza, is perpetually out of production (or at least for the couple of years prior to my last visit). Their brews are still good, afaik, but I'm not a beer connoisseur.

OK, just going by what I'm seeing on Wiki (enough said) 25.6 inches by 36 feet for the torpedo. A 20 MT warhead would by design have to be pretty damn big and I'm not sure that they could actually make it work. I'm not really sure that the Russians have gotten that good at miniaturization so that they could actually marry a 20 MT device to a torpedo.

Yes, it isn't a third stage proper, but adding that U-238 (which can be depleted) is capable of nearly doubling the yield of the thing. The fast neutron burst from the fusion reaction is right in the right cross section to fission U-238, and adds greatly to the yield. It also adds greatly to the fallout.

That design "Sakarov's Third Idea, I think they called it" was capable of 100MT yield with that casing.

507 Shinano was converted to a carrier, while under construction. The 18.1 in. guns, never fitted.

She was sunk by the U.S.S. Archerfish, and that still holds the record as the largest warship ever sunk by a sub.

Yep, Shinano was larger than the former U.S. cruiser that the world knew as the General Belgrano.

Argentine Cruiser, sunk by the Brits in the Falklands War.

Only TWO Yamato class Battleships ever bestrode the waves.

Shinano was gelded into a flattop, intended as a carrier to re-supply the smaller Japanese combat carries with fresh planes and supplies.

And I concur with earlier sentiments.

A Yamato class floating museum would be an absolute wonder to behold.

As for the kamikaze and Baka Bombers?

I think the sailors from Okinawa, onward, would have some opinion on those.

They killed dozens of our ships, and thousands of our men.

And at the cost of one Idiot per Bomb, that's one hell of a kill ratio. In THEIR favor.

Idiots, indeed.

Though they never threatened the *eventual* success at Okinawa, they damn near broke the back of the Naval support effort, there.

Be thankful that Japanese tacticians tended towards ALWAYS attacking U.S. combat ships.

Had they the wisdom to have targeted the logistics chain?

The Pacific War could've damn near ended as a Negotiated Settlement, vs. Unconditional Surrender.

And as for the deliverable megatonnage of a Tzar Bomba vs. today's warheads?

Mini. At. Your. Ate. Shun.

The plutonium core and shielding of those early nukes, wasn't the weight maker it is now.

But tons of casing, thousands of pounds of tube-based electronics, old fashioned wafer-switch controls and much "etc.".

Plus, the physics kept improving over the years.

Tritrium in the wave guide from the plutonium core to hydrogen secondary, etc.

Smaller bits, bigger....MUCH BIGGER, bang.

No one makes a Fat Boy or Little Man size nuke, anymore.

But Russia has a full selection of Dirty Nukes. Count on it.

Rhomboid, did some quick smoking over. It was the U-238 tamper, as they called. Tsar Bomba was a proper 3-stage device. Fission-fusion-fusion. The original design with the U-238 tamper would've been 100 MT. But, they used a lead tamper in the actual device they built, which halved it down to 50 MT.

And that was to limit the ridiculous fallout, which would've blown back all over their own territory.

532 482 Sure you don't have her mixed up with someone else?

According to that Wiki thingy, CS ran a record company from '82-'84. I'd heard that somewhere else before.

She also had some name recognition before Blondie as a Playboy Bunny. She had made some connections through that, I'm sure.

Posted by: BackwardsBoy likes lobster at February 11, 2018 12:21 AM (tRaq7)

++++

OK, but Blondie disbanded in 82. So, Stein took his success from Blondie and tried to run a record company. Only did so for a few years. That's a long way from Debbie Harry screwing her way into a record contract. I mean, she did it all backwards. Her band breaks up just when her squeeze becomes a record company guy.

The two of them were nobodies when they started Blondie. They both were instrumental in the success of the band.

588 that's a bad fever, hope you are getting that knocked down fast. You need to.

my father was in ICU for advanced pneumonia 18 months ago (he spent 3 weeks in the ICU, and 4 more weeks in rehab - finally recovered.) One night his fever was spiking, I was out of state but mom and sister were with him, and the nurses kept giving him tylenol compounds, and it wasn't doing squat for his fever, which was getting to that 103 area, and he was getting delirious, and nobody knew what to do - and so, here with all these professionals, it fell to me, who was out of state and without any actual medical degree (although I've picked up a lot over the years) to light a fire under everyone there to get the head doctor on emergency call and get him to cut the tylenol (which actually is NOT very good for fever reduction in most people) and instead heavily dose him with plain old aspirin, which a lot of hospitals now shy away from. Fever broke within about 45 minutes.

After all that was over, one of the floor nurses told my mother "I was thinking that was probably what would work, but the doctors get mad at us if we wake them up at 2 in the morning." Idiots.

noisy car pull into a nearby parking structure, and then backfire four
or five times in quick succession. Scared the heck out of my friends.
They assumed it was gunfire. It's been years since the previous time
that I'd heard a backfire.

Posted by: junior at February 11, 2018 01:03 AM (2+XPt)

Well, a true "backfire" like I observed today, is when the fuel mixture explodes in the intake manifold, with a loud bang under the hood. This one blew the plastic air intake duct off both the throttle body and the air filter, and left a haze of blue smoke.

When it happens in the exhaust system, it's more properly called a "muffler explosion", and the classic way to induce one was to lift off the throttle, shut off the ignition, coast a second or two, and switch the ignition back on. The high vacuum with the closed throttle plate would suck a rich mixture through the cylinders, and into the exhaust system, and when the key was turned back on, the next firing pulse would ignite the whole thing. Yuuuge, and luxurious bang!
Can't do that with EFI cars. Turn the key off, the flow of fuel stops, too. But it could happen, inadvertently, if the ignition system were intermittent, and the fuel injection was working steadily.

So many of those chuckleheads go out and get Subarus, Honda's whatever and the first thing they put on their cars is a about a thousand dollars worth of exhaust system. They don't do anything on the front end, just the exhaust so it sounds cool. And the damn stereo. About a grand for that as well. 636 Best Backfire I Ever Saw - some decades ago, about 3 or 4 of us were helping a drinking buddy work on his Firebird, timing was off, or maybe timing chain had slipped, whatever. Wasn't running right. He was draped over the engine, trying to get it adjusted, and it was my job to turn the key when he called out, so he could hear how it sounded while he messed with the carb - and it worked out that he was looking in the carb when a great big backfire, flames and all, shot straight back at him.

Well that of course was awful and could have hurt him - but you remember those bugs bunny cartoons, where a bomb goes off in Yosemite Sam's face and he's solid black with two big white eyes (from squinting hard) and then his hair is blown back straight in all directions, like some kind of weird carbon halo? That was him, EXACTLY.

So he's hurting, and his face is feeling burnt, and he's pissed at his car, and then he gets REALLY pissed when all of the rest of us take one look at him and literally fall on the ground laughing. It was one of those things that of course was terrible, but at the same time was one of the funniest sights I have ever seen in my life!

He was sore about that for a long time, too.

My mother was an rural carrier for years and years. She started out as sub, when the current carrier put out flyers in the box, looking for anyone interesting in becoming a part-time carrier.

She took it, and then a few years later, he retired, and she took the job, full time. I forget how many years she did it. But it was after I graduated from college when she finally retired herself.

651 Some guys used to screw a spark plug right into a tail pipe, to set the rich exhaust charge off and throw flames. In fact, some guys used to run a little old fuel line and fuel pump back there to make sure the charge was timed right. And some guys used to set those off in the drive-in parking lot.

It wasn't safe to do, at all. It kind of gave young people and hot cars a bad name. Some people seem to think that it was all funzy games in them days, but McDonald's campaigned for a decade to get those damned teenagers out of their restaurants so they wouldn't scare the family trade away. And powerful cars and fast driving, not to mention the music, were all denounced from all the pulpits on all the Sundays. It was evil to be young, you were often reminded.

I simply cannot listen to the asshats doing the announcing for ice dancing or figure skating. It's nothing but a bunch of sour grapes cattiness, making clear that the announcer type is soooo super capable at doing what the athletes clearly cannot do with any ability whatsoever.

If I need to listen to a bunch of cats screeching, I can always just go to work.
