Easier Problem - White To Play (606)

I think that the correct first move is rather obvious. So obvious, in fact, that many of you will probably be tempted to immediately yell "Woohoo! Solved another one!" and run a victory lap. Not so fast. Because Black has a reply that will render your first move null and void, and you'll be stuck -- unless, of course, you find the correct White response. So your answer should be of the form:

1. White's KILLER first move: ________________
2. Black's AWESOME response: ________________
3. White's DEVASTATING finish:________________

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (BWTC 75)

Hint: White must smash through Black's defenses in order for his bishops to have their full effect

Easier Problem - White To Play

20180120 - Problem 1.jpg
5k2/6p1/p2q3p/b7/2QB4/7P/P5P1/6K1 w - - 0 1

1.Bc5!

Pins lack's queen. But...

1...Bb6!

White's pin is now of no use since his Bishop is now also pinned. But he can wriggle free with

2.Qf4+! and Black's loss of material is decisive.

Or, alternatively, Black can forget the counter-pin and try something less sharp:

1...Bc7

To defend the queen. But that also falls short: 2.Qf4+ Ke7 3.Qe5+ Kd7 4.Qxg7+ Kd8 5.Bxd6 Bxd6 6.Qxh6 and wins.

More Challenging Problem - To Play

k3r3/pp1rn1pp/P1p3q1/2P2b2/Q1B2B2/4p3/6PP/R4RK1 w - - 0 1

The decision tree is long, but narrow. It's a mate in 6:

1. axb7+ Rxb7
2. Qxa7+ Rxa7
3. Rxa7+ Kxa7
4. Ra1+ Kb7
5. Ba6+ Ka7 (or 5...Ka
6. Bc8#

Hope to see you all again next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

57 For the second problem, I don't see any immediate mate or anything. However, even so, white's position seems very strong and aggressive, so it seems he'd probably win eventually with just "normal" play, without the need for brilliancies.

That said, I;m surely missing something. But since I can't see it, I;d probably play something obvious like Bd6 with various threats. Bxe3 is also super-obvious and also seem to lead to a good game for white.

But I'd be willing to wager there is some crazy brilliancy that's eluding me. I;m looking at absurd moves like Bd5?!?!?!, which invites black to blunder, but if he avoids blundering, I don't see the win. So: I vote for an obvious move.

The trendy designers have been pushing that groovy asexual dress/romp-him thing since at least the 60's. It obviously never takes hold. Man-gams are not showcased to advantage in anything that is not a tactical kilt. It requires at a minimum Oi boots and a short sword.

It always feels like some trippy post-apocalyptic Disco Caligula World thing.

This is how you end up with Zardoz, people.

People sometimes comment here about intra-Asian racism. I remember watching Godzilla movies as a kid and my mother, from China, would look at the actors in disgust and exclaim "Dey look so Westuhn!"

101 I went to see Proud Mary, hoping it would be like a sequel to Ms Hensons role in Smokin Aces. Instead it was probably one of the worst films I have seen in years. I never thought that a full length movie could be made without a single plot twist or red herring or joke or a line of clever wordplay. Just a bunch of plot holes and characters without enough development to be cardboard. The only laugh I got was thinking of Oregon Muse as one actor was shot in the shoulder, winced and held the wound, and then proceeded to continue the gunplay without even a bloody shirt.

188 Ya know, I reall like Steampunk Fashion. I've never been preppy or goth or really gone for any specific category, but there is something about Steampunk I love. It's this wonderful fusion of Victorian Era and Sci Fi and Fantasy.

I don't like drawing attention to myself, so it is not something I can see wearing except at Halloween. But I do love it.

205 Well, in the best willow spirit, here goes. Checked movie thread and everyone was talking about .... movies.

ICE arrested two prominent illegal immigration activists (we're already in la-la land right there ..... "activists" for those breaking laws?). One's been deported, another set to be deported. Both in the US a long time, both convicted of non-violent crimes, with previous deportation orders, and stays of those orders.

Anyway, this is the WTF? part. From the Daily Caller, by their "foreign policy and immigration" reporter.

The two arrests "show that immigration agents are now emboldened to arrest even the most connected of illegal immigrants".

Huh? "Emboldened". To enforce the law. Against flagrant violators. I get what he's trying to convey, but that such a sentence could be written is a reminder of how far we are into orwellian lawlessness.

208 Hmm. Just saw a short interview of OMB Mulvaney about the shutdown.

Might not be the whole story, but he said last night Trump told him not to "weaponize" the appropriations gap. He seemed to mean specifically the outrageous vandalism (my words) that occurred in 2013, esp. with the Nat. Park Service.

There might be other things that can be done, if it lasts a while, that would be invisible to the public (by definition - things that aren't essential and that are largely unknown) to exploit this situation to do some trimming and slimming.
