What about your GAINZZZZ, brah?

I saw the orthopedic surgeon who did my shoulder replacement a week ago Thursday; he was happy with what he saw on the X-Ray, but perhaps not so much on my range-of-motion progress because he wrote orders to my therapists instructing them to "get aggressive" with their therapy. So I know they went home and starting poring through books they have in their libraries such as 'Insane Tortures of the Nazis' and 'Aztec Cult Initiation Pain Rituals' as well as 'Extreme Yoga' by Guru Mahirajah Manalishi Mahesh Mariachi (also known as 'The Amazing Rubber Man') looking for ideas.

So, with its own strength, I can raise my right arm straight out in front of me pretty much horizontal, but no further. Call that 0 degrees as a baseline. With the pulley contraption, I can hoist it up to about 35-45 degrees so that it looks like I'm doing a half-assed Nazi salute. So I keep my arm raised about 5-10 seconds, and then lower it. I can do 5-6 reps and then it hurts too bad to continue. I'm doing this exercise 4-6 times per day.

It stops hurting immediately after I stop lifting it, so I'm OK.

Here's another thing I can't do: With your arms at your sides, raise your forearm to a horizontal position while keeping your elbow at your side. Got that? OK, now swing your arm out away from you while your elbow remains stationary. What is enablng you to do that is called "external rotation" and I have virtually none in my right arm. So the range-of-motion exercise for this is me holding a cane and gently push my arm out, only I can't do it very extensively because it immediately starts to hurt like a mother Fokker (yes, those German WWI airplanes were not comfortable to fly) and I can get maybe 5 degrees of rotation. I'm told this will be the most difficult motion to restore, and the surgeon says I may never get some of it back.

But I am making progress and I can now reach for some things and do some things with my right arm that I couldn't a couple of weeks ago. I'm a little over 3 months post-injury, and they tell me recovery will take about a year, so I have a ways to go. One other thing, though: When I watch old westerns or cop shows and somebody gets shot in the shoulder and then he's perfectly functional after the next commercial break, I just laugh and laugh.

I now believe that if I were to get shot, the last part of my body I would want to get shot would be my shoulder.

So those are my GAINZZZZ... What about yours, brah?

Update: For those of you who don't know, here is my account of what I did to lose range-of-motion in my right shoulder/arm.

2 I have a lot of difficulty doing any sort of exercise during the winter months of the year.

I can force myself to go to the gym most other times, and I've even gotten to the point where I don't hate going for a short run (assuming the weather is nice), but leaving the house to work out when it's below freezing is just a bridge too far for me, apparently.

7 My gains include having my give-a-fuck meter at work pegging out at zero.

Apparently kicking down is a real thing around here. Guess where I am on the totem pole.

I would also add to that listing my ability to have two beers open at one time.

That is a net gain, IMO.

After a while they healed to the point I could take it off, but it was really painful to move that thing in any sort of range of motion. Honestly the PT people are necessary because you can't force yourself to do it as far as they will and you need to get through that first 6 or 8 weeks with them to be able to do the rest on your own.

OT (occupational therapy) = other torture

Had my right shoulder rebuilt a few years ago (not replaced, just had tendon's reattached and spurs ground off). It was in nasty shape, with places where the bones had worn off due to not being held in place properly. But now it is just about as good as the other shoulder. So keep at it, yeah it hurts a lot but it'll get better.

97 when I broke my elbow a few years ago going to the physical therapists was pure torture. I told the orthopedic surgeon I just couldn't take it. so he called this one guy who came over from Florence with a device you could put pressure on the joint with an increase it slowly. My joint was back to normal in less than 30 days and it didn't hurt a bit. He had not called this guy before because he said insurance would not cover it. I said that was fine. In any case the insurance did wind up covering it.

4) keep doing the basic exercises several times a week at home for another three to six months.

163 I broke my shoulder like yours, OM, but I had temporary pins instead, apparently the surgeon figured I would heal if bolted together.

Once they got the pins out, my goal was to touch the top of the door frame, and that took time. After that it was to touch the 8' ceiling, and after that to touch my fingers behind my back.

I got the last pins out about August so I could do my stretches in the back yard where the cussing wouldn't worry the cats.

Once I was able to do that and throw apples over-hand, I dug out my shepherds' sling and would go down to the park and throw rocks at the river.

I am proud to say I almost never missed.

Glad you are making it back. It is a long path.

On the good side, to follow up on Gainzzz, I am getting back into swimming and I can do the crawl and back strokes just fine.

Used for sports and passive exercise, I had it done extensively for a back and neck injury after a car wreck. Is it an option for you? There are home kits now.

Any case, endeavor to persevere!

172 I messed up my tibial plateau, and broke both bones in my wrist Oct 14th . Zero pressure on my leg until 2 weeks ago. The P.T. was tough but nothing near what you guys have gone through. Last day of p.t. in Denver last thurs.,the therapist is testing my wrist strength. She is twisting my hand and I am resisting the pressure. My good elbow pops, and the look on her face made her think she broke my good arm. Laughed my ass off.

178 Oh OregonMuse, please be patient and stop forcing yourself to do exercises that hurt. Pain means stop, so listen. Just be thankful that your pain stops when you stop pushing. Give your body time to heal - you just got hurt in October - and realize you may not recover your full range of motion. Just ask yourself, can I live without it? It could be much worse. Remember how you felt a couple months ago?

I badly broke both bones in my right ankle several years ago, and prayed to just be able to walk again. That seemed like an unattainable goal for awhile, and the PT was rough. My ankle hurt most of every day for months, then part of the time, then I finally got to the point when I actually wouldn't think about it daily. Try Real Time Pain Relief Maxx formula lotion to rub on whatever hurts (within reason!) and see if that helps. I was using it several times a day for awhile, then several times a week, and now just as needed. Anyway, go easy on the exercises, try to be patient, and just be thankful that you are doing much better than you were. Blessings!

179 I've been doing 5x5 for about a 18 months than switched to 3x3 for heavy lifting and doing 5x5 for light 80% lifts. Also found citrulline, bcaas, creatine are good pre workout and tumeric, zma and burglars good for recovery

Congrats on the weight loss. I also wanted to let you know that I prepared and served your recipe for Mustard Shrimp to a group of jewelry artists gathered to take classes outside of Philadelphia. High praise for it -- I liked it, a lot -- and several of the guests asked for the recipe, which I provided to them. Well done!

182 Hang in there Oregon Muse.

I had two rotator cuff surgeries last year, one in October (left shoulder) and one just before Christmas (right shoulder) due to high deductible insurance, and wanted to get both done while deductible was achieved.

No fun at all. Just now getting back to normal, strength still underperforming, but pretty much full ROM without pain.

Exactly right about getting shot in the shoulder - but, movies ain't real life. If they were, Trump would have kicked the crap out of half the dems and RINOs in congress by now.

My knees are next on the list.

Getting old is not for sissies.

Posted by: Optimus Maximus at January 19, 2018 05:49 PM (C2EWj)

183 Hang in there Muse. Haven't had a replacement, but I have had both cuffs repaired. The last one with screws and transplanted tendon. Unless you've experienced it, it's hard to believe how every simple movement of your body makes the shoulder throb.

When I read your mention of the pulley my body shuddered.

188 Late but thanks for the GAINZ thread.
Very glad you're healing, OM.

I'm back at the gym, finally. After years of delay. Thanks to the wife for deciding to make ME responsible for nagging her to go to gym, making it easy for me to go, too.

So, I'm a bit stiff and weak and haven't lifted for a good 7 years. But I'm happy. Glad to be working out again

Oh and still on IF, which is responsible for reversing my advancing weight.

191 I have one of those myself, actually, as a result of shattering the ball of my humerus in a long-distance fall.

My advice is unfriendly. You have to work through the motherfucking pain. Hard, hard, physical therapy. Regular multiple-times/day stretching. I did PT until I was crying. You're forcing tendons to reattach & stretch ... inches. If you take it easy, it will never never improve.

But there's this. I had VERY limited ROM b/f my fall - couldn't raise arm past horizontal. Now I can do jumping jacks.

Best wishes,

ET!

192 Glad to get the update and hear you're doing better. I remember looking at the X-ray when you first posted it and thinking that was a really nasty set of metal. Good luck with the rehab!

Posted by: Jill v2 at January 19, 2018 07:11 PM (E9Gtg)

193 If you can, get the meanest PT you can. Seriously. I lollygagged my shoulder OF for month because my therapist was used to crying old ladies. Once I got the badass i was out of there in no time. It hurts, but it's worth it.

Posted by: Lmc at January 19, 2018 07:39 PM (aRDaB)

194 I'm glad you're getting better; it doesn't matter how long it takes to move forward as long as you don't move backward.

196 Put your arm behind your back with the lower part horizontal. Use a towel behind your back and grasp it with your hand. Use the other hand to slowly raise your hand. Hold to the count of five. Do this ten times three times a day. Pull the towel to the point of resistance and hold each time. Hurts like hell but in a few months you will be able to wash your back in the shower and take your wallet out of your back pocket

198 I have registered for my second powerlifting meet, which will take place at the end of April. My last one was in June of 2016. My bench press is right near where it was then, as I have been working hard on it it in recent months. I have just started seriously squatting and deadlifting again, and I have a way to go, but I am confident I can reach and exceed my previous maxes.

As a 52 year old, I am the strongest I have ever been in my life overall, and definitely the most muscular. I have a little bit of midsection I am trying to make smaller, but I am trying to go slowly so as not to compromise overall strength.

Posted by: JohnFNotKerry at January 19, 2018 08:05 PM (iPbC0)

199 I've had both shoulders rebuilt, and I've got to say, were it not for the physical terrorists, I'd still be muddling along at half-strength or less. They got me back to work two weeks early. and in better shape than I was pre-surgery.

200 OM
If you're still monitoring this thread, I would suggest that you visit Starting Strength and look up the video on Post Op Shoulder Rehab.
You sound like things have gone well, but you could be missing out an opportunity for a more effective approach to conventional therapies.
Regardless, best of luck...

201 In the Marines we have a Meme, "Pain is weakness leaving the body" My therapist made tears come to my eyes after Rotator cuff surgery.
I am now a year to date from the injury and have 95% of motion at 85% the therapist and Doctor turn you loose.
I can do everything I could do before except two things.
1. Sleep comfortably on the opposite side of the injury.
2. attend toilet job with arm that was repaired, (Charmin ahemmmm administration) my left hand has learned slowly to attend as I go along.
Hang in there, it gets better I'm pullin' for you!

202 Go slowly, do not stretch rubber bands or lift light weights. I was doing well after very gentle therapy in Germany, then switched to aggressive US style sports therapy, it set me back six or seven months!
