Apple Says It Will Repatriate $250 Billion to US in Next Five Years, Add 20,000 Jobs in the US

Actually, they say they'll be "contributing" $350 billion ($100 billion more than the $250 billion they have in foreign accounts) to America. They might be talking about another $100 billion in capital investments in the US, plus the impact of adding 20,000 jobs. They might also be contemplating direct donations to charitable causes or starting their own charitable foundation, as some companies have done in the wake of tax reform.

Not sure how they come to that particular $350 billion figure.

But anyway, they're bringing practically all their offshore money into the US, and will wind up paying $38 billion in taxes (to America) for that privilege.

All of my manufacturing experience was with companies that made stuff in Canada and shipped most of it to the US. Some of those companies opened plants in Mexico to save on labour, I know of some others that tried that and came back because it was just too difficult for small companies to deal with Mexico BS. Recently idiot Trudeau made some tax changes that will greatly affect small and medium sized business owners negatively. Now Trump has done the opposite in the US. The accounting firm I work for has for years had a 'product' they use to help small business owners with retirement, to either sell or pass the business to their kids and avoid excess costs with that process. Now I just received an email from a partner saying they are modifying this product because of the sudden uptick of Canadian business owners who want to sell or move their business to the US. 1000's small businesses > big companies.

Yeah. Jobs was personally seemingly somewhat of a liberal, but he was fundamentally opposed to DC getting involved in his business and was way more resistant than most of the Silicon Valley to playing the DC game. He had several opportunities to try use govt against competitors, and he did not. (for example, when there were rumblings of anti trust litigation against MSFT back in the '90s)

I think there is still some of that in the Apple corporate culture.
