Thursday Night's ONT has Taken Off Its Considering Cap

What does that even mean? Has Dave been drinking again? Well, no, but that's exactly what it means. Benjamin Franklin compiled a list of terms for being drunk. I like antiquated words. I always promise myself that I'll start using them, but I rarely do. For example, this is a word that I personally would use a lot, if I remembered it:

More good ones here and here.

Food For Thought

It was announced today that Jeff Bezos is now worth $105 billion. Here's a picture of him, running his mighty online empire, in 1999. Makes me wonder what the hell I am doing with my life.

Bezos.jpg

Maps

I think maps are really cool. Largest early world map stitched together virtually. You can click through and examine each of the segments of the map in high resolution. I wasted about an hour the other day doing just that.

March For Life

Tomorrow is the March For Life in DC. Last year I wrote a short thread called 'Why We March”. Since you can't comment on old threads, I'm copying it here for those that haven't seen it:

Why We March

*Mumble mumble* years ago, a young woman found her life shattered. She had fallen for a man who turned out to be a cad.

He left her alone and pregnant, to return to a wife and kids that she had known nothing about. Scared and humiliated, she traveled to Texas.

There she gave birth to a son. The nurse handed her the baby, and then realized that this was an adoption case and took him away.

Sobbing, she thought “He's going to a better life. He's going to people who will love and care for him, as I can't”

And I did.

But she was wrong. She may not have been able to care for me, but I never for a moment believed that she didn't love me.

35 years later we met again, for the first time, and I told her that. And that's why I have 2 moms.

This is what #MarchForLife means to me.

Related: Pope Francis Honors Dutch Abortion Activist with Pontifical Medal of Knighthood.

Now, I am not a Catholic, so I don't have a deep understanding of a lot of this stuff. As I understand it, the Pope has two, I dunno what to call it, modes maybe? In his “official mode”, he can make statements that are considered to be church doctrine-an accurate representation of God's will, teachings, whatever. Outside of that, he's just a man and can be as fallible as anyone else. I understand the reasoning and agree with it, it's just a different form of a discussion I've been having lately WRT politicians, most recently “How can you support Donald Trump when he is an adulterer and you think adultery is a moral failing?”. My answer is that DJT isn't my moral compass, he's a politician and his job is to run the country. If he's doing a good job at that, whatever moral failings he may have are immaterial. I may not like them, I may even condemn them personally, but it's his job performance that I'm concerned with. This is not a blanket statement, there are moral failings which would disqualify someone from the office, but adultery is not one of them.

But the presidency is a secular office. The papacy is not, and celebrating and rewarding someone who advocates for a position that is so morally repugnant to the stated beliefs of the Church seems very, very wrong to me. I would appreciate the thoughts of actual Catholics on the matter.

Slower Than Molasses Running Uphill in January

99 years ago this week it wasn't very slow at all. January 15, 1918 was the date of the Great Molasses Flood in Boston. Scientists finally decode the Great Molasses Flood of 1919

"Molasses, waist deep, covered the street and swirled and bubbled about the wreckage ... Here and there struggled a form‍ – whether it was animal or human being was impossible to tell," the Boston Post reported at the time. "Only an upheaval, a thrashing about in the sticky mass, showed where any life was ... Horses died like so many flies on sticky fly-paper. The more they struggled, the deeper in the mess they were ensnared. Human beings‍ – men and women‍ – suffered likewise."

Sounds like an awful way to die.

Memes

A corollary to Ace's excellent post from last night, Trump's Basic Instincts About the Political War Are Essentially Right, and The Establishment's Sense of It Is Essentially Wrong.

If Ace is right, and I believe that he is, one of the strongest weapons in the fight to reduce the Left's social status is mockery, and the modern day meme is a great way to do that. I made two this week about Cory Booker's rant in committee:

2 Can we coin a name for articles that come up in google (or any) searches

They are popping up more and more in all kinds of publications and I am dreadfully sick of it.

Latest

How can one be ordered to volunteer?

Well, when your annual performance review is dependent on it...

I don't know when it started in industry. I suspect it's the descendant of "voluntary" donations to United Way -- executives apparently compete with each other over how much their people donate, so it became more expected than voluntary. That practice caught some heat, so now it's "show how the company gives back to the community" with mandatory volunteering.

All the while the same managers are walking around bug-eyed because we're "behind" on schedules they pulled out of their asses.

Maybe if they cancelled all the pep rallies, we'd have time to do our work?

Either way that one turned out, there was a player who broke the fundamental rules of football.

The Safety, of course, should have wrapped up the receiver. Simply hug him - Game Over.

But, the Receiver turned in with only 8 seconds on the running clock. If the Safety didn't completely whiff the tackle - Game Over.

Now, I have some rather specific thoughts on the current Bishop of Rome, but as I am not a Catholic, I don't want to go making statements about whether he's a "heretical" pope, as I know some have said. However, I do have a question: If Francis doesn't approve of this woman's position on abortion and gay stuff, why did he confer this honor on her? I understand diplomatic exchanges and all that, but why did it have to be this specific honor? One which talks about being a friend to the Catholic Church and doing God's work? Did the Vatican consider defending the substance of this honorific less important than avoiding even the chance of a dust-up with the Dutch government? And if so, why?

Most likely, she will be berthed immediately behind the USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114) which is making final preparations to join the fleet in March. If the sailors aboard the Johnson have not yet taken to heart the extreme danger of their profession, I am certain by 1005 they will have.

But now, people are paying attention, and news spreads.

To solve this, the Vatican needs to distinguish between handing out souvenirs from the gift shop - a book on why the Church believes that abortion is wrong, for instance - and handing out medals, especially medals with the name of a Pope on them.

I doubt it'll work long-term. Sure, the military might (key word) be able to tamp things down in the short term. But unless the government is willing to take the time, effort, and expense involved in completely dismantling the gangs, then it's just slapping a Band-Aid on the situation. It seems that the exchange of these diplomatic honors or whatever to people of such questionable character have effectively diminished the Order of St. Gregory. It's a totally counterproductive PR move, and stupid.

Yes, but that's not where all the money goes, and if I want to give money to Catholic Charities, I will do so, outside of the high pressure nonsense that still sends money to "charities" that provide abortions.

But, but, but....it is easy!

182 Once attended an NHL playoff game at the Spectrum. Visiting team won the game in overtime (sudden death goal). Friend and I (good seats, down near one goal) knew what not to do. So I still remember, when the goal was scored, we just sort of started to move, jump, clap - but immediately stopped. In the deflation/disappointment of the sold out arena, nobody near us noticed anything.

As we were leaving, we saw a scene out of a movie. A guy wearing the visiting team's jersey went running across one of the major hallways that led into the arena interior, in the outer ring where fans walk (we were exiting just in front of this). Right after him - a a crowd of local fans, screaming.

Brilliant. It is unlikely Trump realizes he literally has to replace 75% of the GOP to have a chance at seriously helping the country, and even less likely he'll try it, or succeed. Thus the case for pessimism remains strong.

251 Cradle Catholic, pre-Vatican II vintage.

My first impulse is to say that the report being cited is from the MSM, which means that it must be taken with a pound or two of salt.

However, if it is literally true, well, the Church has survived corrupt popes, stupid popes, even multiple popes waging war on each other. She will survive this one, too.

But the College of Cardinals should be slapped silly for even *thinking* of electing a Jesuit as pope!

Posted by: Brown Line at January 18, 2018 11:13 PM (S6ArX)

252 43 The papacy is not, and celebrating and rewarding someone who advocates for a position that is so morally repugnant to the stated beliefs of the Church seems very, very wrong to me. I would appreciate the thoughts of actual Catholics on the matter.

Snollygoster
Snollygoster is a 19th century American word for "a dishonest or corrupt politician". Or, to take an original definition from the editor of a Georgia newspaper: "a snollygoster is a fellow who wants office, regardless of party, platform or principles, and who, whenever he wins, gets there by the sheer force of monumental talknophical assumnacy".

If ever a word need to make a comeback, this it.

IMHO the annoying thing about theology is that for several questions there are no tests that can be performed to prove one belief being right as opposed to another. Baptism for instance, which model is correct? All you are left with is arguing about interpretation of the text. Is language by nature so ambiguous that you need a magisterium to disambiguate things as questions arise? Or are the relevant passages in total precise enough and anyone who disagrees is merely being obtuse? I don't know. Makes me glad to have a dog in this fight.

341 I was adopted at birth. I never tried to find my birth mother. I
figured it was water under the bridge. I also considered some scenarios
where a reunion might have been awkward.

She found me. Or rather, she hired a detective agency who tracked me down and said "We were hired by your birth mother to give you the option of knowing who she is. If you don't want to, that is totally your choice, but if you do, we have her name and number". I thought for a sec, shrugged and said "Why not?". They gave it to me, I called her number, and when she answered I said "Hey, haven't seen you in about 35 years, what have you been up to?".

I truly believe we have a hell of a lot to learn about and from dolphins and whales. I think we humans have tended to write them off as "dumb" animals because they comfortably inhabit an environment we know pathetically little about. And we have simply been too damn lazy and arrogant to explore their place in the oceans and the ins and outs of these creatures societies. Scientists are very, very slowly coming to realize that dolphins and cetaceans are incredibly intelligent.

Elephants, too. I'll be the first to admit I am a member of the lowest ranks when it comes to understanding elephant societies and customs. But I have read enough to understand that elephant societies are every bit as complex and well organized as human societties.

Homo sapiens need to get its head out of its posterior, and take a long, serious look at creatures we have too long seen as nothing more than commodies.

We spend incredible time and money on SETI. But we can learn to converse with and learn from alien culture without leaving Earth.

421 OK, I'm a VERY lapsed Catholic so my opinion is suspect. But I have to say this Pope is shit. If he has any purpose beyond driving the faithful away from the RCC, I can't see it. For those who retain their Catholic faith, this must be a painful time.

My parents and grandparents were all ardently faithful Catholics. I sometimes wonder how they would react if they were still with us with Frankie as Pope.

Wouldn't doubt it for a minute.
I was really good at searching the web (and enjoyed it) before google made everything easy by stealing all of Altavista's brilliant ideas. When info was like a needle in a haystack, there was a bit of a chase to it. A thrill. Not that I would go back, but we're on the other end of it now and the web is beginning to be like searching for hay in a stack of needles.
And on top of that, it seems we're only ever a click away from very disturbing images. Combine that with Fake News, the droll selfish arrogant pointlessness of social media, the clickbait "We Say Goodbye to Jason Bateman" type ads, the lack of privacy, and the totalitarian censorship of the left, I'm beginning to really hate it.That said, the nice parts of the web are still nice. If you want to learn something, anything, you can do it from actual experts for basically the cost of your internet service, and that part still makes me feel a sort of childlike wonder for the world we live in.

502 I'm also tired of every web site looking exactly the same and serving up fake misleading headlines and the same stupid clickbait content at the margins. Also "comment posted 917 days ago". WTF - are dates passe now?

Anyway, there was a time when it looked like graphic design would take a real front seat on the web, which was quite exciting, but the competition for search presence and google's nudging to what it alone deems to be "good web design" has virtually eliminated individuality and steered the web to this place.

That has its advantages and there are few things worse than a badly designed website. But every place you go now is a carbon copy of the last and next one.

Except AoS where it's always July 1991.

545 I've never watched any of Trump's past reality shows, TV appearances, etc.- this year is literally the first time I've watched him - speeches and rallies via youtube. I don't see what's objectionable about his person.

For people that find him personally distasteful (whether or not they ultimately support him) are they just carrying over some memories or experiences from watching his earlier shows?

Obama and Dubya were grating, I've never been able to get through any speech delivered by them. Again Trump is just ... unobjectionable by comparison. A matter of taste? I'm not sure why this was such a widespread issue for so many, though I'm glad a lot of people see past it.

Life long metal guitar player. It used to be easy. people ask what do you play? I say metal. Ah, ok.

Then chuckleheads over the years invented a dozen or so splinter genres of metal, some that have nothing to do with it, so when I got asked I had to start being specific. Speed metal, power metal, etc. A bass player called me a berserker one time, reflecting my sometimes over the top approach to things, so it kind of stuck. These days I'm more aligned with the European style Viking metal, and Vikings can be called dragonheads, soooo Berserker-dragonheads division.

You're not as far off as you think. I adopted this nic over 20 years ago when I first ventured online. I found myself on a very far-left message board where everyone was all about group sex and trannys and the "empowerment" of LGBTQRSTUVWhatever. If Becerra does follow through on his threat to prosecute employers working with ICE, that will be one interesting lawsuit. Funny how Dems only like the Supremacy Clause when the Supremacy suits them, as in AZ wanting to enforce immigration law.

I find it ironically funny that the sanctuary city/state dead enders are the new Rebels, flouting Federal Law. Why, it's like 1860 all over again as, that time, a Republican was elected president and the Dems went apeshit and eventually seceded, causing quite a little dust-up.

The left sees no irony in them being the new Rebels tearing down statues of Rebels from yesteryear.

599 The lull before the storm.

I'm about to open Schrodinger's box, to see if the thing that should be there is there or not. For that is the question. If the thing is there, the game moves to the next level where another thing has to be obtained.

If the thing is not there, then another path must be taken to obtain the thing that should be there.

At least, the uncertainty of existence will be resolved, leaving only the uncertainty of obtaining the thing that must be obtained before the end of civilization as we know it.

For existence is in a state of flux and uncertainty is the natural state of things until the moment of truth when the government man says, "I need to see your identification," and that is pass or fail. Failure would be a nightmare, and avoiding that nightmare requires that I open Schrodinger's box.

I need another beer.

As to the 'new' Pope - who has the 'old' Pope under house arrest - I'm reminded of an old story about when the Church came down opposed to birth control and an old Italian woman stuck her finger in that Pope's face and proclaimed, "You no playa da game, you no make a da rules."

Of course, it's a joke, it never actually happened but it's indicative of the mindset of many many Catholics who find a Popes edicts a whole lot less than the word of God himself. They still have reverence to the church, but will pretty much ignore what the guy at the top has to say if they disagree.

611 The cows are just cold.

----------

While driving across Iowa one winter morning before sun up when the air temperature was below zero, I saw a herd of cows next to the freeway. Too many to count in one quick glance; say fifty or more. They were sheltering in a small low area and tightly packed together. You could see the body heat of the animals rising up as steam in the very cold and dry air.

What was amusing were the cows on the outside ring who were trying to push their way into the center of the herd and were being fought off by those animals that were in the center of the herd who didn't want to be push out into the cold.

Krebs cycle (biochemistry)

The Krebs cycle, also known as the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), was first recognized in 1937 by the man for whom it is named, German biochemist Hans Adolph Krebs. His highly detailed and extensive research in the field of cellular metabolism and other scientific endeavors gleaned him the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1953. Krebs's contributions to the fields of science and medicine are substantial; in addition to the citric acid cycle, Krebs also identified the urea cycle in 1932.

Carnot cycle (thermodynamics)

The Carnot cycle is a theoretical thermodynamic cycle proposed by French physicist Sadi Carnot in 1824 and expanded upon by others in the 1830s and 1840s. It provides an upper limit on the efficiency that any classical thermodynamic engine can achieve during the conversion of heat into work, or conversely, the efficiency of a refrigeration system in creating a temperature difference (e.g. refrigeration) by the application of work to the system. It is not an actual thermodynamic cycle but is a theoretical construct.
