16 Willowed from the last thread:

There's a scene in the musical Titanic where, after the lifeboats are gone, a card shark asks if anyone wants to play a game to pass the time. "I warn you," he adds, "I cheat."

"So what?"
another passenger replies. "I'm not gonna pay you, anyway."

I think of that sometimes when pondering a known, expected death.

127 TRENTON -

Gov. Chris Christie has signed into a law a bill banning bump stocks, like the one a gunman used in the Las Vegas concert shooting to turn a semi-automatic weapon into a rapid-shooting gun.

Christie made no statement Monday on the legislation making ownership of the devices illegal. Under previous law they weren't banned but were barred from legal use on weapons.

Owners will have 90 days to surrender bump stocks or "trigger cranks." Retailers have 30 days. Sale or possession now carries a three- to five-year sentence, a fine of up to $15,000, or both.

Bump stocks substitute for the regular stock and grip of a semi-automatic rifle, allowing the weapon to fire continuously, up to 400 to 800 rounds a minute.

Some scholars think that may be an allegory of the Spanish War of Independence. Since it was one of the Black Paintings, it was meant for Goya's eyes only. We were never meant to see it. If it is an allegory of the War, then it's a deep look at Goya's soul as he watches his country destroy itself.

160 back to nuclear war

" Two concentric circles around Ground Zero. Inside the first, no, pretty much nothing will help you. Outside the second, no need to bother, you were fine anyway. In between the two, yes, what shelter you take can make all the difference.

Oh, and, you don't know where Ground Zero will be. Yes, dammit, take shelter. "

right ... and even now, we (collectively) don't have the ability to nuke the whole world several times over, afaik. It would be teotwawki, but staying hidden from fallout for a couple weeks would allow many/most to survive (filter air intake). And there are vast bunkers storing much tech and resources. Nuclear winter ... maybe, but still a lot of survivors.

The rogue state delivering a couple lower grade nukes is far more likely, and that would be messy sure, for markets especially. But current funny money markets might be another type "calamity".

It depends on the style they practiced. This was the beginning of Modernism. The Impressionists painted for themselves and were not allowed to display at the official art shows. Academic artists usually painted on commission because their style was popular among the power-brokers, so could find jobs easier. Impressionists were the rebels. They painted first and then tried to sell what they painted. It didn't go so well with artists like Renoir or Pizarro. Monet found some success later in life, but many of the Impressionists were independently wealthy anyway. The women were very popular because a woman artist was still considered an exotic novelty back then. Their art was also seen as very sincere and personal.

That's because it is a permanent cut in capital gains (the penalty for investing).

It's totally true that for the rich, more of their burden is in capital gains than in income. And thus reducing capital gains skews toward the rich. But even the socialists in Europe understand that you can only penalize people so much for investment. And the EU's statements are solid that they are going to lose a lot of investment, owing to the new desirability of investing in America. Such that they are considering potential new cuts to their capital gains and corporate taxes.

The Market is simply another name for reality.

It is a horrible painting, but it is also an incredibly political painting.

When the Bourbons were brought back to Spain by the fairly liberal resistance and provisional governments after Napoleon and the French were kicked out, Charles VI was installed and the first thing he did was institute himself as an absolutist monarch and to cement his position he jailed, suppressed and exiled all his former liberal supporters, and in the process alienated and lost almost all the Spanish colonies in the new world. This was the final move of a long series of politics eating its own, starting with the misfortunes of Spain in the lead up to, during and the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars.

Detroit at its worst is still better than Mexico. There are places I'd never want to live in the USA, but they're still better than most of the rest of the world. Detroit is a lousy place to live with bears wandering the gun- and needle-riddled streets, but its still not a drug gang run third world craphole with disease in the water, no internet unless you're rich, cops that require bribes to not stick you into godawful prisons with no protections of your rights, and there are actually jobs and an economy around you.

There's not as much crap and trash in the streets, you're much less likely to be decapitated or hung from an overpass because some drug lord thought you made him angry, and the very government its self is not owned by organized criminals.

Its bad there, but not Mexico bad. And both this guy being deported, and the people who claim Trump is the Worst Person On Earth™ for saying its bad know it very well.

405 It is a horrible painting, but it is also an incredibly political painting.

Posted by: Kindltot at January 16, 2018 10:29 AM (2K6fY)

The final panels of his Horrors of War cement his feelings about Charles. Goya knew him as a child and knew what kind of monarch he would be. Charles made a deal with Napoleon to overthrow his father and was then double-crossed by the French. When Charles is invited back to Spain to be king again, Goya depicts him as a black wolf, willing to sign whatever he could to get his throne. He immediately ripped up the Spanish Constitution.

Charles put Goya on trial to prove his loyalty to the Spanish crown, because Goya was the royal painter for Joseph Bonaparte (and kinda like him). To prove his loyalty, he painted "The 2nd of May, 1808" and "The 3rd of May, 1808". It worked, but Goya refused to work for Charles and retired.

430 Obama (and his players) got markets to go up using ZIRP (zero interest rate policy) for eight years and $4T in QE, even as he failed to make the real economy better for America. In a sense he "stole" big market gains without really building the underlying (private sector) economy (much).

So Trump is doing good things for sure, but we had a lot of ground to make up. Markets are still global, and trade deficit with China (and the rest) is still huge and not getting smaller.

Killing off deep state is top priority, which hopefully doesn't kill off markets if some leveraged players are involved (globalists). But stock markets are not the same as "the American economy" ... Wall Street actually has bought us out with their leveraged games and 2big2fail/jail bailouts ... so tricky business to reverse that. imo

Its for votes plain and simple.

The only group of people who currently vote for Republicans in any meaningful numbers are white people.

The democrat party is organized around entrapping and maximizing the vote ethnic or racial blocks.

The same they did for recently arrived immigrants in the 18th and 19th century.

People forget the total control the Democrats had till at least 80s and 90 on Congress.

It wasntuntil the Republican takeover of 94 that ended 60 years of total control of the House.

Apparently those cosplay girls, while nice to look at and talented with their craft, are mostly cray cray and because the costumes are so hard and take so long to put on and often not very ventilated, tend to have nasty BO as well. There's a dark side to everything.

I have read several different stories of Mark Waid, for instance, who goes to Cons just to get laid.

I've only been to a few cons, and they were all small local ones. Stuff like Comic Con, a lot of the big names are saying they'll never go back because its lost all its charm and is too big, loud, and obnoxious. I think they are peaking in popularity. We'll reach a point eventually where all this faux geek chic will fade away again, and only the real fans will be part of that culture instead of all the "I love Science" posers and people who pretend to love "Big Bang Theory."

Yeah what happened to the labor participation rate was truly shocking. That's why I always rejected any pretense that we were out of the recession just because the official unemployment numbers dropped to non-shocking levels. The US kept having quarters of contraction instead of growth, rarely ever as high as even 3%, and employment was shockingly low. Inflation was higher than the government was willing to admit to, and overall consumer confidence was miserable.

We're still not out of that, but signs are very promising right now.

Sorry to preemptively ruin it for you. It's not like it's terrible, it just isn't nearly as good as I feel like they could have made it. And yeah, I did hear that the writer's strike did have something to do with how the show turned out.

We do. She has been a comfort through the death of my mother and our son's deployment. Our other kitty lived to 14 and we miss her terribly. It's going to hurt when little Sandy goes.

Head on down to my teensy little upstate SC town, MP4. Unless you give the hand signal, I won't know who you are. Although, we do have the claim to infamous fame of being the home to serial killer, Todd Kohlhepp. Other than that, we're a nice, friendly, small southern town!

One was obvious. The choices for the other four were dumb. And having Bob Dylan be an interdimensional, god-like being was just weird.

Seasons 1-3 were very good but the religion sub-theme was annoying.

529 Apparently those cosplay girls, while nice to look at and talented with their craft, are mostly cray cray and because the costumes are so hard and take so long to put on and often not very ventilated, tend to have nasty BO as well. There's a dark side to everything.

If you were lucky enough to get it on with a cosplay girl, wouldn't you think a mutual shower would be a good way of getting the entertainment started?

Or is it just me?

It sounds like you're a very caring person, Jane. You help out with lunches after funeral services for members of your church, you prove a home for students from abroad, you care for your family and your cats. That's wonderful! God bless you.

yeah, and quality of jobs is another big factor, as working at WalMart is not the same as production jobs. (and 2 part time I heard counted as two jobs). I haven't looked into it much ... just hoping to clear out the Wall Street globalists without tanking the markets too bad.

We had become a "service economy" and much of the GDP was financial services ... which can be good if it is lending to a growing business, not so good if it is putting under-employed people deeper in debt. (while coastal elites make millions on foreign market gains, and demand cheap illegals for nannies and gardeners)

"No pressure". By Richard Curtiss, one of the original Blackadder writers. *sigh*

Respectfully, I disagree. What Germany is doing is far worse. Curtiss was merely trying to frighten kids into obeying eco-bullshit. Germany is trying to commit genocide against Germans. Much worse.

533 Just clicked off the TV, all the cables running the same Senare "hearing," in shich every D senator begins his or her "question" with a story about this illegal valectictorian or that illegal environmental activist or another illegal wonderful contributor.

I clicked off when Dicky Durbin came on and began his heartwarming spiel.

They ought to have a music track running, playing "Feelings" when Feinstein, Leahy, and Durbin go on. And the horror show cellos when the knives come out and accusing rhetorical questions start.

534 The first 3 seasons of BSG are probably my favorite TV show, but the last season really fell flat for me. Without going into details, I wasn't a fan with who they chose as the final 5 cylons, or how they ended closing everything. Made things worse because I had a very detailed theory about how things were going to end up, and after watching it, I like my idea better.

Posted by: joe, living dangerously

Shocker: I'm a fan too...

But yeah, the last season should have stopped at the midseason finale. Would have been much more appropriate.
