"A-10 savin' the day again, baby!" That's what U.S. troops on the ground scream for joy after an A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot swoops down low for a "gun run" in Afghanistan. Did you ever own a semi-automatic pistol before that fateful canoe trip? The humble beginnings of the semi-automatic pistol. h/t Anonosaurus Wrecks. Before the turn of the 20th century, no one knew what a magazine-fed pistol should look like, and theories varied greatly. In the early 1890s, Austrian Joseph Laumann re-designed his Model 1891 8 mm repeater pistol (above) to function as a blowback-operated semi-automatic. The history of the semi-automatic pistol may appear a bit disjointed, for the story requires tying together separate events from around the world as the best minds in the industry focused on creating the simplest, most durable and most user-friendly handgun. The potential reward was enormous, as every military in every country was a prospective buyer, not to mention the legions of civilians. After all, who wouldn’t be interested in a new handgun that offered advanced firepower? And so some of the greatest firearm designers in history embarked on what may have been their best-supported and most prolific period of creativity Wow, not impressed with this UK firearms surrender. England promoted a national firearms amnesty/turn-in during 2017. In Bristol, 313 “guns” were turned in, along with a whopping 120 rounds of ammunition. That’s one round of ammo for every 2.6 “guns.”. I put “guns” in quotes, because . . . only 186 of the 313 items were actual firearms. Most of those had no ammunition for them. Ooh, gun thread.
Grump, I'm a big, big fan of the Springfield XD. It's my preferred carry gun because it digests absolutely everything. I also like the easy-to-actuate grip safety, personally. I own two of the XD 45 and my wife owns one as well. Main differences with the XDM 45 is the match barrel. Personally, I find the XD to be more accurate than I am, so been happy with the accuracy of my regular models. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards at January 14, 2018 07:08 PM (xJa6I) 8

For my frelling 'dip' training yesterday, did 'Mozambique' drills with my PPQ 9mm.
Dip is still there. Training was performed at 5 and 7 yards and one magazine at 10 yards. 95% of shots were on bad guy. Not all were where I'd want them, but was going for speed this week. That's the good news. Bad news is, when I speed up, the 'dip' is even more pronounced. Lots of 'low and right' hits. I don't think I have the right stance, either. I have been trying Jeff Cooper's technique, but that is forcing the muzzle of my pistol down to keep my elbow by my ribs. Would love to go to Gunsite to get that nailed down but...would also love to be employed again. One predicates the other. I may try a different grip next week, see if I can find something that feels good, is accurate and is something I can get into and use under stress. I have the Springfield XD in 45 acp not the XDM. The reviews for the XDM have been excellent. The XD is comfortable to shoot and has been completely reliable. I do better with the Springfield than I do with a friend's Colt 45 acp.
If I was looking for another 45acp semi, it would probably be the XDM. It appears to be a great value. Posted by: JTB at January 14, 2018 07:16 PM (V+03K) 23
Guns are a sensitive subject for me since my ex wife took my family's gun collection spanning 4 generations back to the Civil War and hid them in the hot humid attic for 6 months while I was out of town claiming fear and threating to call the cops. None had their firing pins in because I was safe with them around kids in the house.
Literally relatives from the Cjvil War from the Union enemy, WWII from nazis and Jap enemies, Vietnam from the commies, and about 100grand worth of old 12, 20, 16, and 410 gauges used to hunt quail, dove, and ducks. And the rifles. They turned into rust. Ruined beyond repair. Basically had to give them away or she would call the cops. Great way to honor my families veterans and generations of teaching sons to hunt. *ragestroke* Posted by: Monk at January 14, 2018 07:17 PM (g4lFK) 24

#Failifornia ammo law update:
CRPA and the NRA/ILA will be filing suit any day now, as they have been circulating agreement and waiver documents to plaintiffs. with any luck, they will seek, and get, an injunction, based on their likelihood of succeeding, since they are claiming a violation of the Commerce Clause, as well as the 2nd Amendment. (just a guess on my part, i have no actual knowledge of what their tactics are, just the general grounds they are filing under) since the law clearly inhibits free trade across state lines, it *should* be a slam dunk, except 9th Circus. however, they are filing Insane Diego, possibly even with the same judge that made the Peruta decision, so we shall see. more details as i get them. Posted by: Ignoramus at January 14, 2018 07:23 PM (pV/54) With some cautions, yes. Raylan is depicted as a very skilled handgunner and at least in the first season, where a lot of gunplay happens, nothing struck me as being too 'Hollywood'. Fight choreography is competent and guns do not have unlimited ammo. Which is less of an issue as Raylan ends most fights with three rounds or less. I've see CZ 50 and CZ 70's for a little over $200 at J&G sales, Classic Firearms and a few other sites. If you want very small but reliable, the Kel Tec is surprisingly good in .32. And it's tiny and cheap. If you want a polymer .32, I'd go with them. Metal, go cz or zastava m70 .32. @25 Ditto that. the Hog is the foot soldier's best friend.
------------------------ It's kinda funny. People talk about how the A-10 and similar dedicated close support aircraft would be useless in a modern battlefield. The claim is that enemy interceptors would knock them down if the sky was contested. Yeah, about that... One of the tabletop games I play covers a hypothetical World War III breaking out in Europe in 1985. The developer included air support aircraft (including Cobras and A-10s; the Apache, sadly, was a year or two later). The general feeling on the forums for that company (and people posting there include a lot of individuals who have served in the military) is that Close Support missions would have been largely undisturbed during the opening stages of such a hypothetical war. The argument is actually fairly simple. In air combat, speed is life. And if you're high up in the air, then you can always trade some altitude for speed. So the air combat battles would all be taking place at high altitude. Meanwhile, the ground combat aircraft on both sides would all be flying along at low altitude because that's where they do their job. And any fighter that dropped down to low level to take them out would be incredibly vulnerable to an opposing fighter that was still up at high altitude, and spotted its opponent 10,000 feet lower. So it's actually mostly safe (aside from AA fire, of course) to run Close Air Support missions - at least until the other side swings the air power battle enough in their favor to feel it's safe to start breaking off fighters to go actively hunt down the CAS aircraft. ---------------- If California was smart, they'd hurry and fix the problems that have kept people from (legally) buying ammo in the state since the law passed. That way they could stand in front of the judge and say with a (mostly) straight face, "Yes, unfortunate issues were encountered. But we've fixed those issues, and nothing further needs to be done. Just ignore those silly Commerce Clause arguments." But California isn't smart, and will undoubtedly foot drag things as long as it can to keep people from buying that evil evil ammo for their guns. It sounds like you're talking Isosceles? If so, that's my most accurate stance. But for speed/stress, I've been trying to do the 'stiff right arm + bent left' Cooper stance. For those discerning folks wanting a black powder cap and ball revolver, Cabelas is having a big sale on their Pietta revolvers. (Some long time shooters will tell you Pietta is no good. But the last ten years or so they have improved and are at least as good as Uberti, maybe better. I have several of their C and B guns and they are excellent.)
I use regular Goex black powder in mine but Pyrodex works just as well and is easier to find. Posted by: JTB at January 14, 2018 07:43 PM (V+03K) 79
I see Skookumchuk's 32acp question has already been answered above.
Non-gun friend of mine has a CZ27 in that caliber that his dad (then a Navy pilot) bought somewhere in the early 60s, possibly Europe - therefore it's paperless. Cleaned it up a bit, but decided to take it to a gunsmith for full disassembly/ultrasonic cleaning. Returned it to the friend. Told him to put it away well hidden if he doesn't plan to learn how to shoot it (he shot it at one session, with me). And if he sells it, to me of course. I don't have or seek that caliber, really, but ...... then I'd have an excuse to get a CZ83 or CZ70 in the caliber. And the dies. Etc. Just one more exception to my very serious, not kidding, I really mean it!, rule on no new calibers. Posted by: rhomboid at January 14, 2018 07:43 PM (QDnY+) 80

I think a trend is emerging for 2018: Good pistols are getting cheaper!
Take a look at Ruger's product offerings. They introduced the 9E, their "value enhanced" version of the SR9, a year or two ago. I bought one for under $288 and it's an excellent pistol. Not just a great value--it's a really good pistol without regard to price. For 2018 Ruger has introduced the Security 9, which also looks to be an excellent pistol. Dealers are accepting pre-orders at $289. This is one of several relatively new pistols apparently designed to compete directly with the Glock 19, but the Ruger's cost is lower than other manufacturers. Ruger also has introduced the EC9S. This is a value-enhanced version of the LC9S, a single-stack, striker fired 9MM. Dealers are taking pre-orders at $214. That's just an outrageously good value in a carry gun. Along with those, Ruger has recently introduced the PCC 9MM carbine, which has been discussed here before. It accepts SR9 and Security 9 magazines and ships with an adapter for Glock mags. It's selling for $519. These new gun prices can reasonably be expected to come down further during 2018. Ruger is kicking major ass. It'll be interesting to see if this pressures other gun makers to lower prices. Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at January 14, 2018 07:46 PM (398bZ) 89

Guns on Justified
The only thing I noticed was a few times when an empty (or expected to be empty) semi-auto pistol didn't have the slide lock open. However, I assume a pistol could be modified to not lock when empty. The trade-off would be a manual re-rack versus not letting the opponent know you're empty. Also, the show was so often I just let that slide (no pun intended) Posted by: Chuck C at January 14, 2018 07:47 PM (0V2ki) 91
The only knock I have on modern Ruger is that they are releasing so many different pistols, it's hard for me to keep track of. Because one or two of them are crap (Looking at you, Ruger American) and the rest are Ruger-Average (quirky but reliable) to outright excellent.
I do want the new Ruger pistol carbine. I don't NEED it, as I have a Sub-2000 and a few other pistol carbines...but I want it. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards at January 14, 2018 07:48 PM (xJa6I) 92

MisHum, a billion thanks for the gub thread! First one I haven't completely missed in a long time.
And, of course, I really *do* need to go load 150 45ACP rounds, cuz I then have to load a ton of 9mm. Thursday is range day and my buddy uses my XD9. Speaking of which, XDs are wonderful, simple, apparently bullet-proof guns (at least in my experience). Guys at the matches say there's a gunsmith who does a complete disassembly/cleaning for $30, but have to meet him evenings at a range a 40-minute drive away. Only drawback to the XDs - and that's really not categorical - is they're not simple to completely disassemble. I'm not shy with bunches and gunsmith's screwdriver, but I am cautious. Of course mine probably has 20,000 rounds through it, with only normal cleaning (which is a snap). I'm sure many guys do full disassembly on their own. In recent weeks there were a couple of XD45s for sale privately around here for under $400 (like, $350) - low round-count, perfect condition. Jeebus, that's cheap for what you're getting. For lots of reasons just can't justify grabbing one of those right now. 1911 is my only 45ACP platform. Posted by: rhomboid at January 14, 2018 07:50 PM (QDnY+) 98

With a little bit of training, they put your trigger finger in the perfect position for the draw. I was having a real problem with getting all the cosmoline off and....I'm lazy. So I broke two pistols down as far as I could, took the grips off, and washed them. It...seems to have worked. Just make sure you lube the guns up afterwards. And make sure all the springs are still accounted for. Posted by: poster nutbag at January 14, 2018 07:51 PM (90kXJ) You put your finger exactly on why some/many ranges ban SERPA holsters. Most training places don't want you doing ANYTHING with your trigger finger except pulling the trigger. There have been some Accidental Discharges, not a lot, as a result of fingers being in line with the trigger on the draw stroke. Only Scheel's I've been in is near Reno (Sparks). Very nice store. Young woman in the boot/shoe department was the best retail clerk I've had in decades. She put the wife in new perfect walking shoes we'd never heard of, and me in perfect general work-boots. Knew her stuff (they send clerks like her to footwear conferences where they actually learn the basics from designers and engineers, very impressive).
That's also the store where, a few years ago when it was new, there was a young clerk in the gun department with "Earp" on his name-tag. Yep, he was related. He said Hollywood lawyers had his father fly out and sign all kinds of waivers right when that movie was made (not sure why or what that's about, but he was directly related in any case). Seemed like the perfect weird detail for a gun store in the west - an Earp on the staff. Posted by: rhomboid at January 14, 2018 07:58 PM (QDnY+) 117

It's academic, at the moment, due to the current moratorium on new acquisitions, but I'm planning on adding 45 Colt to the line-up, with a Henry Big Boy lever and some kind of single action revolver (Ruger Vaquero and Pietta or Uberti, probably - Colt's are just too expensive).
So, good to hear that Uberti's reputation for quality is rising. I don't have the dies yet for 45 Colt (unlike .223/5.56, where I also don't yet have a rifle), but I bought some ammo before CA's latest attack on the 2A, and plan to reload. That's one of those calibers which is far too painful at retail/factory prices, if you shoot much of it, but darn cheap if you load your own. dartist, continue to treat the gun with care, but no reason you can't shoot it.
As always, with such situations, take it to a *good* gunsmith (someone who is specifically knowledgeable about older platforms), have him check it out and clean it. Very unlikely there's a reason you can't shoot it. Especially if it looks good and has just sat since the war. I don't even know what caliber that is, but they're all available, at a price. My dad was in Remagen when the war ended. Can it be proven if it's been shot or not? I'd like to shoot it but people tell me I shouldn't.
Posted by: dartist at January 14, 2018 08:03 PM (nisXv) Great pistol!...Italian Army issue most likely. Most were in .380 although the Eyeties played around with a 9 mm version too. I've spent most of the day watching old Atlas ICBM films.
https://preview.tinyurl.com/yaszcvaq The B stands for "ballistic" so it's sort of relevant to a gun thread. Here is an introductory film explaining the concept made years before the first missile flew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTLA1dPby-g You can understand why there was interservice rivalry in the early days of missiles. The Air Force was like, "It's high altitude and high speed. We got this." The Army was like, "It's just really really big artillery. That's our job." WDS, did you go to the NV store? It's the only Scheel's in the far west, I think.
And we also spent some time in the snowshoe area (their stocks/choice were too low to buy anything), and again - 100% knowledgeable people (who snowshoe, of course). Based on my visits, Scheels' is a very very well run operation. They invest in their staff, monitor them, and reward them (it was so much fun to tell a roving manager, who asked us the usual question "find everything you need?", how great the woman in shoes was, and how she'd completely changed our approach and sold us great stuff - granted I buy very little, but it's so rare anymore that I get to "reward" good workers with strong recommendations to their bosses). For gun forums, The High Road is usually quite good. Some of their stalwart people have passed on or disappeared the last year, but still some good posters.
Excellent reloading sub-forum, very knowledgeable (and guys will send, free, samples of things to other members for them to try - very much a community). The Legal Forum, unfortunately, has one moderator who really is the poster boy for "legal guild/technician who can't even bear to think about the judiciary, their orders must simply be respected and followed", who fanatically punishes any actual discussion of the actual merits of court decisions. A prime example of how the US got to where it is, almost post-constitutional. Posted by: rhomboid at January 14, 2018 08:16 PM (QDnY+) 188
Skip, I trust you meant "hydraulic" fluid and the auto-cucumber got you, twice.
Mark Anthony, forget speed until you're back on target. I've not been shooting much over the last few years and when I shot a month ago found myself flinching with my .45 and yanking the trigger, hitting low and left. Had to get out the Smith and Wesson 317 .22 and get back to it. I still need to shoot slowly to score well. A hundred rounds or so, well-aimed, reminded my body how to do it, and my mind that I have no reason to flinch... however, I did discover that my inaccuracy was also partly the pistol's fault. Due to loss of grip and arm/shoulder strength over the past 5-7 years (as a result of a late-onset Muscular Dystrophy which is now my constant companion), the trigger of my .45 was now too stiff for me to pull smoothly. I deep-cleaned it, polished the appropriate parts, and eased the sear spring enough to lessen the trigger pull to a manageable weight. Of course, the bottom fell out of the thermometer as soon as I got the work done, so I haven't shot it since. If you're fighting your tools, it's tough to do good work. Back in the late 80s, during one of my unit's big, combined-arms live fire exercises, I got tagged to go up on this mountain top in the impact area of Eielson AFB to put a bunch of plastic silhouettes up to represent enemy soldiers. Actually, kind of a fun detail. Fucking AWESOME scenery. Although it kind of sucked trying to drive stakes into the granite mountain top. Had to find cracks in the rock to drive 'em in. So the next day, we do a big assault of the mountain. Alternating A10s, artillery, mortars and eventually us grunts walking up the hill shooting small arms. Fun, great fun. The Hogs did a LOT of strafing, which gave us crunchies serious wood. When we got to the top, I realized that the mountain top that was solid granite 24 hours before was now....... dirt. The A10s had pulverized the rock, and there were 18-20 inch divots all over the mountain top, for at least a 200 meter circle. Damned thing looked like a golf ball. I'll always love the Hog. Thanks for the advice and sorry to hear about the MD. Glad you're sticking with the shooting, though. I'm fine firing slowly. I didn't win the last moron shootoff but I didn't embarrass myself. The problem seems to be with larger calibers like the 45 I want to carry. I wanted to shoot my PPQ, which I know and trust it's accuracy, at speed. See what I'd find. I found dipping/flinching We'll try again next weekend, slow things down and try something else. Could there be a dumber move than moving an NFL team to London.
Gridiron has too many stoppages. There's more action in a rugby match in half the running time. It won't gain a masee TV audience in Europe. Jet lag would kill the London's team's performance, and affect those unlucky to have to play an away game there. Posted by: Ignoramus at January 14, 2018 08:31 PM (pV/54) 232

Dartist - Your .32 Beretta is kind of rare - most were .380s. They are great shooters - no reason not to shoot it. The Roman numerals on the side tell you in what year of Mussolini's reign it was made. The gray holster alone is worth a couple of hundred. If you have two magazines, the holster and the blueing is decent - don't sell it cheap. Whoever you take it to WILL try to low ball you - I promise. Do some research on the internet because different models can be really rare in .32.

Roc and others - I assume that new Ruger carbine will be a unicorn for some time (allocated to distributors). Lots of pent-up demand for something like that. I'm interested but maybe by the time they're generally available, I'll be buying again.
And CA morons can only be tortured by hearing about new Ruger handguns. Apart from single actions, none of them will be available here until/if the infamous "roster" idiocy is struck down. retropox, you're the guy with the amazing 32 collection. I had/have an interest in the 32 mostly for revolvers. Always looking for a handgun the boss will "like", and 32 revolver seemed like a potentially good combo of size and recoil. Get your (his) CC permit. With it, you no longer have to get a pistol purchase permit. The number you can buy with the CC is limited only by your checkbook. Also greatly simplifies the paperwork when you buy.

Thanks. It has a spoils of war note, signed by some Captain too. I'll be putting it up in my dad's foot locker, hopefully the kids will give a crap about it. Posted by: dartist at January 14, 2018 08:40 PM (nisXv) 254

retro you're a serious collector; I'm some sort of hybrid of shooter/collector, but everything must be shoot-able, and will be shot (to some extent). I've stumbled into a couple of valuable Colt revolvers, but yes, they get shot too. We're obviously not talking tiny-run limited edition Pythons or anything worth as much as a new car, but still fairly rare items.

It seems the rot in England started in 1920. The government was alarmed by possible communist and anarchist insurgents and required people to show that they had a "good reason" to own a firearm. In 1946 "self defense" was dropped as a reason that would justify it. I wonder if the government really was alarmed or if it was more a case of "never let a good crisis go to waste".

Re: Nick Searcy. I knew Nick in highschool. Great guy. Pretty good basketball player. He was our three point shooting guard.
I remember the first time I saw the A-10. We ran a RBS site outside of Rammstein AB in the late 70's. If it was a clear day and the site wasn't busy, we'd ask the pilots for a "bubble check" after their bomb/ECM run. It was such an incredible sight to see the A-10 scream over the top of the radar vans about 100 feet over our heads as we stood on top of the vans. Of course, we saw a lot of the older planes come over on bubble checks, too. F-4 Phantoms, F-111's, some of the first F-15's and even the Germans, who were still flying the F-104 Starfighter, aptly named the Widow Maker. Posted by: Grump928(C) at January 14, 2018 09:35 PM (WbIyz) I watched the whole video, Grumpy. Presenter is very enthusiastic. Seems like it would be a natural for hunting hobos. I guess the big drawback in my mind is limited capacity. You get ten shots off the air in the built-in tank, then have to top up. So your max pressure is 3000 psi, and the reservoir is effectively depleted at what, 2000 psi, or 1000? Same deal with the air tank that charges it. Every time you charge the rifle, you draw down the tank a little, so each air charge has a little less zip on shot #1, and a little leas on each one thereafter. Wonder if you could run it on CO2, which is stored as a liquid under pressure? Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 14, 2018 09:45 PM (sD2WN) 380

Regarding gun takeover in Washington State that is coming up:
It is the uber-Leftist press here, run by the sickest of Leftist Dems, who dominate the messaging. It is like 1967 Pravda, combined with a healthy dose of shaming if you dare raise a question The REAL problem is the crooked voter rolls in Washington State, caused and supported by the Left and their Motor Voter law passed here in 1994. They will let any human being self-register, and send them a voter card without any followup or validation. I saw it for myself a couple of years ago with my own eyes. I let may driver's license almost lapse, found myself in a different city than where I lived, and went into a DL office in an area that had a high immigrant population for decades. I took my number and it was over 40 that who was being helped, so I sat back and observed. I saw Mexican national after Mexican national, interspersed with an occasional Guatemalan or El Salvadoran, in very broken English (one could not speak a word of English and his daughter translated) turn in their national driver's license, take the eye test (blind people pass this test), and asked "Do you want to be automatically registered to vote? Just fill out this card and check the box saying you can vote". THAT WAS IT!! When my turn to renew was called, I asked the clerk if he thought those Mexis and Guats were citizens. (Somewhere in this piece of paper called "The Constitution", it claims only citizens can vote) He nodded to me before I finished my sentence and just said, "I know, we are required to give everyone a card if they wish, and not ask any other questions." "Who checks them for actually being a citizen?" "I have been working here over a decade, and I have never heard of one being checked. Never. And I asked, until I was told to shut up if I wanted to keep my job." Get rid of crooked state voting rolls, every state with a Motor Voter law has signed up illegals to vote and every Democrat state closes their eyes to this corruption. Washington State will take away our lawfully owned guns because the Left has corrupted the voter rolls beyond recognition. Period.
