Strunk & White says that "shall" is used to predict things, but "will" is used to signal intent. Thus "if I hold a press conference in Chicago, some thugs shall rob me" (prediction) but "If I have to hear Fredocons bleating one more time I will scream" (intention).
This means MacArthur got it wrong with "I shall return". He was making a promise, signaling intent, not saying "Eh, I'll probably be back."
But is the usage shifting from what Strunk & White declaims? Is "shall" just becoming an exotic variant of "will" that is used for emphasis?

Do you have the bug that causes you to to cough up a bucket of mucus a day? The one the extra strength Mucinex doesn't even put a dent in? If so, go get an antibiotic. The doctor will tell you it doesn't do any good but I insisted and lo and behold a day after I started taking it my coughing problem disappeared. I'm almost as good as new. The damn bug has been going around since Thanksgiving. My office is a canyon of coughs.

Sinus infections usually don't go away on their own. I had a friend in high school who had chronic sinus infections. He'd never go in though, and I suspect the time he did he didn't take the full treatment for it.
I finally got one in my early thirties and the doctor gave me some samples of something that certainly cleared it up, but a side effect of it was that whenever I swallowed I felt like there was broken glass going down my throat. I stuck them out and it didn't come back, but it sucked all around.

Do you have the bug that causes you to to cough up a bucket of mucus a day? The one the extra strength Mucinex doesn't even put a dent in? If so, go get an antibiotic. The doctor will tell you it doesn't do any good but I insisted and lo and behold a day after I started taking it my coughing problem disappeared. I'm almost as good as new. The damn bug has been going around since Thanksgiving. My office is a canyon of coughs.

I agree with the sentiment (the actual sentiment, I mean, not the joke sentiment). But. The reason this kind of stuff was always considered important is you can get some idea how a guy is gonna treat you by looking at how he treats other people. A man who can cheat on his not-at-all-unattractive wife in the first year of marriage is a man who can steer military contracts to his buddies or sign legislation into law because someone made a big donation to his daughter's foundation.
I think the good things his administration has accomplished have mostly been the result of people around him exerting influences. If those people change we could be looking at an entirely different president without having, you know, a different president.
My read is Steve Bannon never had as much influence as he claimed, but what if that's not true? He's got some pretty left leaning people in his inner circle.
And I worry about Congress changing hands. Trump thinks "I made a deal happen" is more important than the deal itself.

but seriously, last weekend I was on a wikipedia walk about all sorts of shit about basic English grammar and etymologies of words and "defective verbs" (it's worth the look up).
You know the word "forlorn"? Adjective, right? Well, not entirely. It HAD BEEN the past participle of a verb with a full conjugation -- "forlese," meaning to abandon, lose, or destroy. But forlese itself became archaic, and then completely forgotten.
However, the past participle of it, "forlorn," survived as an adjective.

Went was just the past tense of *wend.* As in wend around, meander.
Go had its own past participle (which escapes me right now), but people used "went" more and more as the past tense for having gone somewhere, and go's actual past tense dropped out of the language, and went became its official, has-almost-nothing-to-do-with-go past participle.
The verb wend then had to mutate to form a NEW part participle so as not to be confused with go's hijacking of "went." Wend's past participle became "wended."
If you look it up, it's fascinating -- go, in a whole bunch of languages (all the romance ones), is similarly made up of conjugations of OTHER synonyms for "go" which became obsolete and dropped out of the langauge.

apparently the weird unrelated conjugations of "to be" (am, are, is, are, plus was, were, etc.) are assembled from different copular type verbs that disappeared out of the language. They're supposedly little survivals of Proto-Indo-European.

True story. We rent because Rev is within spittin' distance of retirement and we don't want to be tied down. So anyway, we live in this okay ranch owned by people in church. The appliances are probably 25 years old, if a day.
I don't cook. But I had to make something for Christmas. So I tried to bake this dessert thing, and found out the oven doesn't work. I've lived here a year and a half and never knew I had a broken oven till last month. Shows how much I cook.

A lot of times what looks really good in person doesn't carry over to the camera, and vice versa. Good casting directors seem to have a knack for seeing that, somehow.

Oh yeah. There's stage-acting and camera-acting, and those are different skills. I know some faces just look better on camera.
But still...it has to be a casting director thing. You could ask my cousin Rick, he tried for years to make it but he was 'too good looking' for anything but soap opera roles.

It's worth it. Some companies only hire through them. There are good and bad ones out there. Meaning some are very helpful and will even help with your resume and are good at setting up interviews and being honest about job prospects and the bad ones just don't care.

I just found out a few weeks ago that my previous boss (before he sold the company), had shot (5 times) and killed his office manager at a different company and was declared not guilty by reason of insanity. Spent a year in a mental hospital. Moved and started a new company where I worked with him for about 15 years. I was slightly shocked.

It still plays on Logo. The station with all the RuPaul commercials. I dvr it and watch them when they're on for fun. I watched it as a kid all the time. As an adult, it's like you said, Monty Python absurdity. My favorite character is still Lisa.

I'm glad for everyone involved that it's become so popular and they're all rolling in the dough, but I stopped watching after the first season. When it got popular it lost a lot of the genuine "nerd" feel and went to easy nerd joke stuff. Plus poop jokes. It was like they could tell they had a hit on their hands and had to change it to make it more like every other sitcom. Because that makes sense.

It was a farce. All the characters were over-the-top caricatures of stupidity, greed, sluttiness, or whatever. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
In one episode Al blew himself up and appeared with his face blackened by soot and his hair standing on end, like Wile E. Coyote in a Road Runner cartoon.

John Goodman's character dying was probably the least egregious part of the last season/series finale. What can I remember off the top of my head. Oh yeah, the last season was all just Roseanne's fantasy writing, so "It was all a dream!" But along with that Becky and Dani had swapped husbands. And it was the sister that was a lesbian.

So was the mom, Estelle Parsons. The last few seasons blew chunks. That show is hysterically funny, but only the first 4 seasons.

She was awesome in Sons of Anarchy. That show had talent out the wazoo - it wasn't bad, but it should have been better just from the cast.

No see that was the stupidity. The mom was gay in the show, but that last scene was Roseanne saying "actually it was my sister that was gay not my mom, but I needed to make my mom more interesting." All stupid.

Something I didn't see mentioned is that whereas "Shall" shows intent, "Will" implies certainty. Thus, MacArthur's statement was entirely correct, and some Christians avoid the use of "Will" because only God can be certain that any particular thing will come to pass ("Thy will be done").

I don't see how that's possible anymore. Skyrocketing real estate prices have resulted in local rent costs more or less doubling since then.
What's the solution to this problem? I'm pretty sure there really isn't one, at least in the broad sense of something that'll help everyone at those lower income levels. No, the only thing that'll help is to try to improve your own personal circumstances.
Raising minimum wage to $15 an hour will not help. Other people have talked about how low-wage jobs just get automated away when that happens, so I won't go into that here. Another point against a greatly increased minimum wage is, prices on everything increase as a result. After all, labor is often the biggest expense for any business. Increase that, and the price for that business's products/services will necessarily increase.
Another factor that makes increasing minimum wage less than helpful is... let's say you're in a low-income job, but not a minimum-wage job. Let's say minimum wage is, like, $8 an hour in your area, and you're currently making $12 an hour. That's 50% above minimum wage. You're doin' all right.
All of a sudden, minimum wage in your area goes up to $15 an hour. Yeah, you're definitely getting an increase in your hourly wage, but... guess what? You're most likely getting a pay raise up to that new minimum wage. The absolute number of dollars you're making is higher, but you're now a minimum-wage employee, and everything you need gets more expensive as a result, and so you are now poorer as a result of that minimum wage hike increasing the absolute number of dollars in your wallet.

It was Monica's Grandma's apartment (who had died). They weren't suppose to be living there & the Super even threatened to turn them in at one point.
But yea, just like most of TV, it does not match reality. If I found that a sticking point, I'd never watch any TV.
