Easier Problem - Black To Play (225)

This position is from an Arab manuscript c. 1016 (!). The pieces on the board all move as they did a thousand years ago, which is why this problem is still relevant. Of course, how the Black king could have worked his way all the way down to b1 is anybody's guess.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (602)

Hint: Gain time by preventing Black's only real threat

And Now, By Popular Demand, Here's Some Dress Pr0n For the 'Ettes:

Easier Problem - Black To Play

20180113 - Problem 1.jpg
1r1r4/8/1n6/2p5/2P5/1NK5/R3R3/1k6 b - - 0 1

1...Na4+
2. Rxa4 Rxb3+
3. Kxb3 Rd3#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20180113 - Problem 2.jpg
k7/8/1K1p4/4p3/5p2/1R6/7b/8 w - - 0 1

The first move is kind of tricky, but it all falls into place after that.

1.Rb1!

Perhaps not obvious, but it prevents the annoying check 1...Bg1+. It also threatens 2.Rh1 followed by 3.Rh8#.

1...Bg3
2.Kc7

Threatens Ra1#.

2...Bf2

To meet 3.Ra1+ with 3...Ba7

3.Rb8+ Ka7
4.Rb2

Which threatens both Ra2# and Rxf2. The rest is just mopping up.

5. Rxf2 Kb5
6. Kxd6 Kc4
7. Kxe5 Kd3
8. Rf3+ Kc4
9. Rh3 f3
10.Rxf3 and wins

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

the big vidja news last week is PS4 releasing BAD games. I am talking bottom of the Barrel, and that's with a capital B.

93 In role-plaguing I mean, -playing games, there was a kerfuffle with Magic stores letting perverts judge games where kids are present. Fortunately Hasbro did the right thing (finally). Unfortunately reddit's MTG channel thinks that bad. I don't really want to know why.

Also, the youtube guy who raised this to our attention - Joshua - had his youtube channel knocked offline, but Google (finally) did the right thing here too.

I've completely given up on reddit. I used to contribute quite a bit on non-political subs, but even where politics and off-topic discussions are explicitly against the rules, mods will often decide "X leftist political position is super important and this will now be stickied and endorsed here" and ignore their own rules. Any pushback is immediately ignored and downvoted because of the leftist hivemind that pervades most of the site. "Why don't you agree with our enlightened positions, hater? (insert Republican policy) will kill millions, it's too important to strictly follow the rules".

Not worth the time.

173 I believe the proper solution to this problem (from the original Arab source, mind you) is:

1. The Holy Black Imam (Bishop) moves diagonally to meet The Glorious Black Knight and borrows the Knights Blessed (by Mohammed himself, hundreds of years previously) Scimitar;

2. The army of infidel dogs cowers in fear, afraid to move even a single piece;

3. The Holy Black Imam advances swiftly through the cowering forces and strikes off the head of the Filthy White Infidel Whore (Queen) with a single righteous blow of the Blessed Scimitar;

4. The cowardly White "King" drops to his kneea and pledges fealty to Allah before being crucified along with his entire army for the mere affrontery of challenging the power of Islam.

Yeah, they say a wood-burning fireplace is 15% efficient. In other words, 85% of the heat produced is going up and out your chimney.

188 Nope, then I don't have gas-inserts. I converted on real wood fireplace to gas logs and love it. Heats the room great. The other fireplace had gas logs when I bought the home. It's dual sided and puts out ton of BTU's. Neither is prolly as efficient as an insert, but they sure are pretty and work well for our purpose.

189 Mine is a permanent. Gas had to be plumbed over to it. It was a big job for a professional. Glad I didn't do it myself. The guy had to drill through the fire pit floor which was a half inch steel plate. Like drilling thru the hull of a battleship.

My friend has one. He heats his small house with it. It is sealed around the sides and top and has a blower under it. I think he also ran a smaller pipe up the old chimney.

Oregon Muse posted earlier it's traditional Hungarian dress, Fenelon. But certainly nice looking family. My youngest son just moved to Hungary and married a beautiful Hungarian lass.

He heats his small house with it.

They say these inserts can be up to 80+% efficient. So most of the heat is staying indoors.

Plus, they use outside air for combustion rather than the inside air like a conventional fireplace does.

205 Sorry, I'm forced to call BS on the second solution. (Please explain why I'm wrong...)

A far more efficient move would be

1. Kc7

At this point it literally does not matter what black does. Its bishop cannot threaten white's king--it has three, count 'em, THREE pawns blocking its path, and cannot move into line of check! As for black's king, well...it's kinda screwed...

And the next move, regardless...
2. Rb3#

Tell me what I'm missing...

This is a thing that goes back as far as the internet itself and I've never understood it. "JLC is a hermaphrodite" is the way I've usually seen it.

If there's ever been a better example of this is how a girl body is put together, JLC still has to be in the conversation.

I don't get it.

Indeed. The prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, seems like an interesting guy. He's painted as a right-wing nazi, but I'm not sure if that's really true or not. He's good at standing up against immigration from shitholes though, and good at thumbing his nose at the EU.

211 What was that game where large Pedos would hand out at bookstores and libraries to trade cards with young kids (mainly and mostly boys)? This was my first hint that autism may be more widespread than I had earlier thought.

Autism or Pedos. We can only throw tendies and compassion at the former, but the latter gets brass and fire thrown that them.

216 Re problem #2

The problem with 1. Kc6 is that it relieves the mating pressure on black's king, which is the only factor that prevents this from being at least a drawn RxB end position after black gets his bishop to g1-a7.

218 Posted by: Brother Cavil, this space for rent! Call 1-800-MORON-AD for details! at January 13, 2018 06:48 PM (lLeln)

After Kc7 the game, played optimally, will draw. The mating threats can all be stopped with accurate play and the pawns start to become very powerful as they advance. Eventually the rook will be forced to trade itself for a pawn and the game will draw. In fact without accurate play, white can easily lose. Two connected passed pawns, sufficiently advanced, are as strong as a rook.
