Maybe because I self-willowed this: I've been thinking a lot about the Oprah for President thing. Obama's election kinda of opened the genie's bottle. His election was of a totally unaccomplished man based on what he was - a Black guy who could talk well when on teleprompter and, and this was important a total blank slate so people didn't know about his racism, anti-Americanism, communism/socialism, severe narcissism, cronyism, corruption, and other attributes. Next, we got Trump a highly accomplished businessman and a celebrity for reelz. Not a phony MSM created celebrity like Obama. In fact in that regard, almost the polar opposite. Trump's strength (which, Please DO NOT THROW AWAY, on the DACA dealio) is- that he promised and has so far mostly delivered Value for the Customer (i.e.. the Voters) just as a good businessman should. So, despite all of the Media and Deep State silliness surrounding Trump - Trump is delivering on the voters' expectations- He is a very publicly well-known businessman going about the business of government in a business-like manner, which includes "Advertising", i.e. tweets, to deliver promised goods and services to his clients(voters). Now to Oprah. She's a popular well-known celebrity, who has more or less created her own showbiz empire. So, a businesswoman. But, what is she really known for? Giving stuff away. (You get a car and you get a car and you get a car...) She is not known for giving clients value for their money (or vote). She is known for Freebies! She is Momma Sugar. Oprah is the Democrat's voting strategy writ large. If I'm in charge everybody gets goodies! - will be a very powerful message for typical Democrat constituents. Remember Obamaphone? Obama will pay for my rent and gasoline? Add on the whole Woman thing, which almost got unlikable, politically clumsy, sickly Hillary! elected, plus Obama's Black voters and you have a potentially powerful opponent to Trump in 2020. I think it would be a real mistake to laugh at the idea of Oprah as a Democrat candidate. Politically she would bring us the same horrible, anti-middle class, anti-America policies of Obama and Hillary! but it would be in the guise of Smiling Mama Sugar. Fortunately, various stories have filtered out that indicate it's not all sweetness and light and freebies behind the scenes. If the GOP were smart (I know, I know), they would start now undermining her public persona with leaks of actual occurrences, unlike all those phony Trump leaks. As always, we will see. You may need to go through a company or two, but that book or that movie or that musician is going to be part of the umbrella. Interesting choice of Makovky's paintings. It is much simpler and uncomplicated compared to many of his other works. (Check out some of them on Wiki. The level of detail is worthy of Rembrandt.) The contrast between the bright background and the girl's dark hair makes her image almost pop from the canvas. The flesh tones are realistic, not rose-hued romantic. This, in turn, stands out against the almost pure white of her blouse. The slashes of color prvides a focus for the viewer as well as the direction of the girl's gaze.
The painting speaks of contrasts in execution and the beauty of the girl versus her sad expression. (Is this a Russian thing?) I find the painting effective and very interesting. Posted by: JTB at January 11, 2018 09:47 AM (V+03K) 92

Oh, she'll get the black vote. Mama Sugar has its appeal. But that won't be enough this time. I think a lot of white women gushed over her and were addicted to the show, not because they saw anything personally admirable in her, but because Oprah provided them with the illusion that we were moving into a post racial society, that they didn't have to feel guilty about slavery any more, that this black woman really liked them (put on Sally Field voice). But the Obama years shat all over that premise. I don't think former white female Oprah fans would be a reliable voting block for her in 2020, and without that I don't think her chances are good at all. The same women who detested Hillary. From some stat I saw, Hillary lost because she couldn't garner 50% of the female vote in key states. Personally, I think Oprah is smart enough to know when she's reached the pinnacle of her abilities and this is all scripted. It's way too soon for the real candidates to step up to the plate. And I save these art threads because I think good art should be saved, and I have two HUGE hard drives, so the image went into PhotoShop and resized to fit 8x11 photo paper, and it looks great - like art work printed on paper. Chock Ful'O'Nuts was a nut shop, then diner chain run by a Mr William Black, who was kind of a capitalist hero. He got real persnickety about his coffee, and would go to the open-air market to choose his own beans on a daily basis. Ended up with a premium-quality blend at bargain-basement prices, which he served in his diners. He was desperately ill once, and while he was in the hospital the corporate raiders moved in. He fought back and fought them off. Not ancient history: it was documented in the Journal.
He hired Jackie Robinson as a promotions man, and from that there evolved a pretty urban folk tale about Pullman-car chefs being part of the brand. There was a lot of prejudice in its favor by back-in-the-day black Americans. After Mr Black's death the brand passed to an Italian company, which flat out surveyed the customers, do you want traditional Chock'Ful quality or do you want low price? And, they claimed, low price won out. So, without even trying to cover it up or lie out of it, they cheapened their blend. Posted by: Stringer Davis at January 11, 2018 10:06 AM (H5rtT) 168

152 Trump makes some kind of magical convincing deal about immigration that keeps his base somewhat placated, and doesn't overtly piss off voting Hispanics.
The black male vote skews heavily towards the baller Trump, putting money in everyone's pockets and curb-stomping black unemployment... Put those two hypotheticals together and I think you just might have yourselves a ball-game. Assuming they both outweigh the "stupid white chick" vote factor. --------------- Let me adjust your aim: 1. Trump gets a wall or Dems have to tell Dreamers they really don't love them. 2. Black women will always vote Dem. It is possible to cut into black males with Trump, but only at the 8-10% level. Unless you distribute some walking around money on election day blacks will not change their voting habits. 3. Mexican Americans will likely vote at greater levels for Trump both for employment growth and border security. They know the Open Borders Garbage Truck stops in their neighborhood, schools and workplaces first. 4. Hispanics are officially 'white people' and as such they dream of achieving the American Dream. 5. There is the DACA deal for 800K, then there is the 11-20M+ illegal deal. If Dems refuse the Wall for Dreamers then they will have little to run on. If they accept it, they will hold their own and maybe gain a dozen House seats. There is no way they can take the Senate. Wow, I fell like I must live in a Big Town. We have both a Hobby Lobby and a Michael's. Wife drags me to both, although I prefer Hobby Lobby. Michael's seems real heavy on the big rows of giant dried flowers, Hobby Lobby seems more well rounded. Although they have gone way into the knick knacky sit on your bookshelf kind of stuff.
Maybe that happened here because they had so much space - Hobby Lobby took over one of the old K-Marts that folded, so it's about the size of a football field under one roof. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 11, 2018 10:10 AM (V2Yro) 186

225 I think that was Rembrandt. He used to show off is
circle-drawing skills in his paintings. Posted by: Kris at January 11, 2018 10:18 AM (nwqNw) It was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, at least that is who I know did that. Britain's age of steamships, railroads, bridges and vacuum powered commuter railroads. Posted by: Kindltot at January 11, 2018 10:23 AM (2K6fY) There were several artists that could do it. Being able to draw a perfect circle without instruments was considered evidence of great artistic skill, and those that could do it like to show it off as a party trick to impress their friends. I wouldn't be surprised if Giotto could do it, actually. I've only heard that Rembrandt specifically could do it. I once had a math teacher who challenged kids in the class to attempt it. If you did, you got extra points on that week's test. Posted by: Kris at January 11, 2018 10:29 AM (nwqNw) 256

We lost our JoAnn Fabrics, in which you often saw men. I bought awning
tarpaulin there, and UV-blocking Solar Cloth for garden tenting. Bolts of burlap. Racecar seat pads. And several patterns of camouflage buckram... ===== I thought I was the only one who preferred JoAnn to any of the others. Better sales in my area and had more 'quirky' stuff. My old WalMart had a killer fabric section and I really miss it because I don't sew, but could buy 'mass quantities' of something or another and pull out a costume or upholstery patches/drapes to cover holes. I do the grocery shopping. She does the coupon clipping. I am by no means the only man working that big grocery store. The day after she retired, I took her to the store and introduced her around (in liquor shop: "Hun, this is the other woman in my life." to clerk, "See? I told you I wasn't drinking all that myself.") The guys I know, butcher baker et al, all asked her, Now you're not going to start doing the shopping are you? After I put the groceries away so I KNOW WHERE they are, I annotate the printed receipt with the mark-downs and close-outs that don't show in the "specials" category, and re-compute the store's %age of savings number. 121 COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC:
We have a Hobby Lobby store opening nearby at the end of the month. Haven't had a real hobby store around for ages. I'm thinking sailing ship models, art supplies, maybe good wool yarn. I know I can order stuff online but it would be nice to see the items first. Anyone familiar with the place? The closest thing we have locally is a Michaels and I feel my testosterone drop every time I go there. Also, unless you get a sale price, Michaels is pretty steep. You can walk into a Hobby Lobby, and you'd think were in Michael's except for the different branding. They have some decent art supplies, some yarn, but don't hold your breath for ship models. Took a crochet class at my local JoAnn's. There was a girl there, in amongst the hausfraus and me. re men and shopping:
I MUST go grocery shopping with my husband. He inherited a horrible gene from his mother, which consists of impulse buying and shopaholism, and his takes its expression in the grocery aisle. He brings home sacks full of the most god-awful stuff if he shops hungry and unsupervised, and as he will only eat leftovers for ~3 days, in sheer self-preservation I go with him, lest the freezer be nothing more than a waiting room for the trash. There are only two of us now, and it is fun to geeze at the store with him, while firmly preventing impulse shopping for "5 for $5!" near-expired frozen enchiladas--"buy ONE, if YOU want one. It will still only cost a dollar." "What, I thought you liked enchiladas?" "...buy ONE, if YOU want one." It was great when daughter worked at the grocery while she was in school, because she could intercept him, and would call me sometimes ("is Dad allowed to buy ______?" "No.") She is working in her profession now, so that safety feature is lost to me, and while the folks at the grocery sympathize, they aren't going to stop him on their own. I do enjoy the geezing aspect of it, though! Posted by: barbarausa at January 11, 2018 10:54 AM (ru28e) 359

The biggest problem facing our Republic, at its core, it our fetishization of public service and the belief in a Ruling Class.
What better way to burst the bubble and return to an era of sensible, elective, representative, and responsive government, than to annihilate the cult worship of "Governement" by filling it with celebrities? Heighten the Contradictions, and all that guff. Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 11, 2018 10:50 AM (T28di) ======== It'll be good if it can get rid of some festering politicians in their safe seats. And I think they'd be less likely to sell us out. Still, in the long run voters need to take more of an interest in primaries and what the cadidates support. Celebrities aren't the answer in and of themselves - look at Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura and especially *spit* Franken. Not really a lot of good done there. @naturalfake, that's a very insightful analysis of Oprah and why I wouldn't write her off. She ticks the right demographic boxes, has a devoted following, massive name-recognition, and is generally perceived as likable.
When Barry got reelected, I concluded there were two possibilities. The first was that the majority of the country understood what it entailed and agreed with it. The second was that people are stupid and wanted to vote for a black guy that the media told them was cool. If the first is true, the republic is finished. In the more likely event that the second is true, we still have a fighting chance, but we have to be prepared for everything to be massively dumbed down. In other words, start sharing pictures of Oprah with Harvey Weinstein #SheKnew Posted by: Biggs Darklighter at January 11, 2018 11:17 AM (mynhJ) 414

And I don't mean otherwise competent celebrities like Trump or Reagan. I mean... well, your list, basically. attention to Washington these days. I know what people are saying about Trump, but I never see/here any of it directly. So all the ins and outs of the sausage factory stuff, and the personal nonsense on the nooz channels and the twiitter tweets, I'm mostly oblivious to it all. Because the purpose of Trump, as far as I'm concerned, is to give a wedgie to that pompous assinine idiot town. Collectively and specifically, wedgie the whole damn rotten place. Id just like to point out that there's a name for what the twitter employee is discussing on today's PV undercover video.
