Interesting! I did a paper in school about a "local boy" named Beardsley Ruml, one of FDRs boys. With a name like that you know he's jes folk. He was a Macy's Department Store executive as I recall and was a principle architect of income witholding. Prior to that, individuals filed quarterly much the same as businesses or somesuch. He had noticed that smaller monthly payments didn't sting as badly, and felt that this would be a way of reducing the sting of taxation. One angle too, was everybody cheated just a "little bit" or at least didn't pay more than they thought they should.
When actual income witholding began they were astounded. FAR more money rolled in than they had anticipated.
Right after the war (the income witholding was "temporary" of course) Ruml gave a speech, where he pointed out some interesting truths that aren't discussed today. One, with a fiat currency, or one that is printed, taxation isn't strictly speaking, even necessary. The government borrows the money it needs, but even that is a kind of sleight of hand.
Taxation is used as a social policy; it's not about the money, it's used to punish people for being successful. Now states, and local government can't print, so it doesn't apply, but federal policies and the way they are applied affect everyone. But it was jawdropping to listen to somebody 70 years ago explain how they think about taxation.

In other news, a water heater really is a "hot water heater".
Ground temperature water comes in and is heated. Mostly that hot water then sits there and gets cooler, but still hot. Then the element turns on and guess what it does ???
It heats hot water -- back up to the high end. Rinse and repeat. But I guess since it heats hot and luke water, the generic "water heater" term is more accurate.

His first term of his second governorship tenure, he even was a sort of speed bump or guard-rail against the worst the legislature sent him. Next term (now), nope. The legislature is far worse (super-majority), and I don't think Brown has restrained them much. He really has become a vile, loathsome, arrogant dumbs**t in his last term.
But since repudiation of federal law appears to have won the contest (immigration), even though polling in CA shows it not to be popular, Brown appears like he will leave office without rebuke. Though I suppose DOJ might actually have a serious response to this crisis that they've just been keeping under wraps until the time is right.

I always try to keep those Amber Alerts turned off. I don't have kids. I don't work in a profession that caters to kids. If I see an adult with kids, my default assumption is that they are indeed the parent or legal guardian.
And if were to witness what I thought to be an actual child abduction, I wouldn't need an Amber Alert to try to respond to it, like call 911.

His wife, my SIL, was very concerned.

In which case, it's probably a parental abduction, and the child isn't as likely to be in real danger. Most of the time, I simply don't frequent places where there are likely to be a lot of kids. I don't hate kids; they just aren't part of my life, so I pay them little attention. Amber Alerts are bound to work better with people who are more child-centric.

It can land anything in the air, with the possible exception of a fully loaded Galaxy, AN-124 or Airbus A-380. I've seen AF-2 (Boeing 757) land there with Vice President Cheney, for example.

I'm trying to remember some informed speculation about might have been the trouble with Jamie Lee, just what intersex condition it could've been. I remember reading that somewhere.
Intersex are almost always sterile (with rare exceptions, which are themselves quite a "miracle" to study). So, if someone ever has children, then intersex can be ruled out.
And there is a difference between intersex and trannies. The former is a mistake by nature in the sex differentiation process, and there many things that can go wrong. It's rare, about 0.1% or something like that of live births, but it happens. What is done depends on the details of whatever condition it is.
I have sympathy for intersex. They can't help it.
But Jamie Lee is still a big idiot, based on her idiocy, not her birth.

No dark matter would have to be regular old positive mass. Even dark energy is positive mass (just has negative pressure, and relativistic pressure, at that, that acts somewhat like negative mass).
Negative mass would be negative energy. E = mc^2. It is gravitationally repulsive. And it repels everything, itself and positive mass.
Positive mass attracts everything, including negative mass.
So, Netwonian gravity wise, put an equal magntiude positive and negative mass some distance apart. The negative mass repels the positive mass, but the positive mass attracts the negative mass.
The center of mass of that system would accelerate off to unlimited velocity. Wait a minute, you say. Well, momentum is conserved. No matter how fast the positive mass gets going, the negative mass is right there dragged along with it and the minus sign gives it negative momentum. The total is thus zero, what it was to start with.
So, two masses accelerate off without limit, gravitationally. That's what I meant by wild and crazy.

Creative Assembly just announced their next big game in the series - Total War: Three Kingdoms. The setting, as the name suggests, will be the Three Kingdoms era in China. That setting is best known due to the Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". As the title suggests, it's more of a romance than a history text, and can best be described as "loosely based on events that might be actual".
It's been interesting to watch the fall-out from the announcement. The groups can be lumped into the following groups -
1.) The people who are excited about the new game. A lot of them think that it's about time that Total War featured China in a game (the series has been around since 2000, and has included Japan and India; this will be the first time that China has appeared in any capacity).
2.) The fans who are upset that the game will be influenced by the novel, and fear that we're about to get "Total Dynasty Warriors". The trailer (which depicts a likely fictitious battle described in the novel) hasn't helped in this regard.
3.) The fans who are rabidly upset that Creative Assembly is not making a game set in Europe, and that any game not set in Europe will be an utter disaster (note that the only two games that haven't been predominantly set in Europe so far are the two games set in Japan; one of them was the very first Total War game).
4.) The racists. At least a couple of them are like the fans in number 3, but injecting race into the equation. But there are also a number of pro-Chinese fans that are busily belittling and mocking European civilization, usually with highly erroneous facts and figures. I'm guessing that a certain amount of these on both sides are trolls.
It's been interesting, albeit annoying, to watch the back and forth over this.

That's Newtonian. In GR, well, you that arrangement is the basic for something called the Alcubiere Warp Drive (spelling is fucked up, look it up). It doesn't do FTL, just warps spacetime such that light goes a hell of a lot faster in the bubble that elsewhere.
With "exotic matter", which is stuff like negative mass-energy and other deviant stuff in the stress-energy tensor which is the source of the Einstein GR gravitional field, you can do really debauched stuff with spacetime.
You make spacetime do butt stuff, so to speak. And worse. ATM, etc.
But there's all sort of problems with this. So we can't start sucking.
Even if it would work, you'll need a lot of it for such a "warp drive". Several solar masses worth of such negative mass. And the same amount of positive mass.
Your warp engine is going to be a humdinger of a power drain. And weigh as much as several stars.
And quantume field theory doesn't like it. You might just blow yourself up if you created the warp field.
And then there are possible causality violations.

yeah, I know. I wasn't a strat fan back then. I was busy hording Gibson V's when I could find them. Although, I wish I bought few strats back then. Got a bunch now, but newer stuff, nothing vintage.

My father bought a jazzmaster new in 1958, early anodized guard. He was one of the first in the area to order one, so it took like 9 months to get it. They had loaned him a guitar while he waited. I asked him, what did they lend you? He said "some old white strat that was kinda beat up. '54 -55 maybe, I gave it back".
