Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Overnight Open Thread (1/12/1 Smiley EditionDeath and mayhem on a Saturday night. Twenty ways you are most likely to die in America. New York, New York is experiencing some of the lowest crime stats ever. Why? So what has caused such a constant, and drastic, reduction in crime? According to Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Stephen Davis, who has seen close to 50 years of policing, there are a few key reasons, all of which work together: community policing, more officers on the street and precision policing as well as the use of new technologies. A trip down memory lane............................... Did you know that January is National Soup Month? I didn't. Eleven soup recipes you should try. I think I'll pass a on a few of them. Guess which ones? Russia. They have some problem drivers. A Russian man believed to be drunk has been detained after stealing an armoured personnel carrier and smashing it into a supermarket. The man stole the tank-like vehicle on caterpillar tracks from a military driving school in the far northern Murmansk region, RIA Novosti news agency cited a traffic police spokeswoman as saying. Oooops, did I do that? The program, which kicked off in October, is funded by a $5,000 grant from Caesars Windsor Cares and is designed for people living with dementia and their caregivers. The once-a-month sessions are held at Art InDeed Studio and provide a unique art activity that can be modified based on participant’s preferences and abilities. “It reduces stress and anxiety,” said Sarah Overton, Education and Support Coordinator. “It also reduces isolation because a lot of time people are withdrawn after a dementia diagnosis because they are afraid to go out or say something wrong. So we are also providing them with that safe spot.” Notice: Posted with permission by AceCorp, LLC. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Doesn't it sort of make some kind of sense - some - that the late unpleasantness in Hawaii was done purposefully? I find it difficult to believe an alert can be sent out without multiple layers of authority. Weekend is a good time for it. The EBS had a similar albeit national glitch on (saturday) 20 Feb 1971

Nope. The official explanation is "someone pushed the wrong button." See, they have buttons in Hawaii. Lots of buttons. TSUNAMI ALERT - HEAD FOR THE HILLS!! SHARK ALERT - STAY OUT OF THE WATER!!! The thing about people and buttons is people like to press buttons. They're irresistible. What does a toddler do as soon as it sees a button? It goes straight for it. If you put a button somewhere conspicuous people will people will push it to find out what happens even if it's not hooked to anything.

Mr. Morgan you are still able to help an undying cause but how long will you be in this privileged position? We are in the clutches of a political party which caters openly and brazenly to the mob and believes that by pouring out billions of public money, still unequalled it can remain in power indefinitely. The democratic principles are forsaken and individual liberty and incentives are made a joke. The New Deal is a perpetual motion scheme which can never work but is given a semblance of operativeness by unceasing supply of the peoples capital. Most of the measures adopted are a bid for votes and some are destructive to established industries and decidedly socialistic. "Most of the measures adopted are a bid for votes and some are destructive to established industries and decidedly socialistic. The next step might be the distribution of wealth by excessive taxing if not conscription.
With best wishes and respectful regards believe me as ever yours most faithfully" N. Tesla The more things change, the more they remain the same ----------- Interesting! I did a paper in school about a "local boy" named Beardsley Ruml, one of FDRs boys. With a name like that you know he's jes folk. He was a Macy's Department Store executive as I recall and was a principle architect of income witholding. Prior to that, individuals filed quarterly much the same as businesses or somesuch. He had noticed that smaller monthly payments didn't sting as badly, and felt that this would be a way of reducing the sting of taxation. One angle too, was everybody cheated just a "little bit" or at least didn't pay more than they thought they should. When actual income witholding began they were astounded. FAR more money rolled in than they had anticipated. Right after the war (the income witholding was "temporary" of course) Ruml gave a speech, where he pointed out some interesting truths that aren't discussed today. One, with a fiat currency, or one that is printed, taxation isn't strictly speaking, even necessary. The government borrows the money it needs, but even that is a kind of sleight of hand. Taxation is used as a social policy; it's not about the money, it's used to punish people for being successful. Now states, and local government can't print, so it doesn't apply, but federal policies and the way they are applied affect everyone. But it was jawdropping to listen to somebody 70 years ago explain how they think about taxation. Posted by: Common Tater at January 13, 2018 09:43 PM (043pn) 118
Hawaii is just a glowing ember by now ... oh wait, never mind. Get the kids out of the storm drain. WAIT ... tsunami warning ... nope, just some moron playing with the buttons.
In other news, a water heater really is a "hot water heater". Ground temperature water comes in and is heated. Mostly that hot water then sits there and gets cooler, but still hot. Then the element turns on and guess what it does ??? It heats hot water -- back up to the high end. Rinse and repeat. But I guess since it heats hot and luke water, the generic "water heater" term is more accurate. Posted by: illiniwek at January 13, 2018 09:43 PM (otAqJ) 119

Woods has already bowed out of any CA race. Said he couldn't fix what Brown has done, "CA is gone".
Sadly he's almost certainly right, in my lifetime. But Brown is hardly even the main name in the saga. His first term of his second governorship tenure, he even was a sort of speed bump or guard-rail against the worst the legislature sent him. Next term (now), nope. The legislature is far worse (super-majority), and I don't think Brown has restrained them much. He really has become a vile, loathsome, arrogant dumbs**t in his last term. But since repudiation of federal law appears to have won the contest (immigration), even though polling in CA shows it not to be popular, Brown appears like he will leave office without rebuke. Though I suppose DOJ might actually have a serious response to this crisis that they've just been keeping under wraps until the time is right. Living in Japan, I have a friend whose parents live in Hokkaido, and had the Nork missile fly overhead last year. They all got a cell phone warning as well. I asked how his parents reacted to the alert. He said, "My dad was pissed off that his sleep had been interrupted."
To the best of my knowledge, no one was stuffing their children down storm drains... Taken in that context, it's easy to understand how an idiot can say "Even if tax revenue goes down, it's the right thing to do" (raising tax rates on income). This is the ideological descendent of guys like Ruml. It's not about the money, it's about the power - and punish people they don't like.
That's why the IRS debacle is so wicked. And people like Lerner et al, belong in prison - because they see nothing wrong with using the power of government as a club with which to beat up people with. It's just insane, and the Republicans are obviously in on the deal. Disgusting. Nixon, it should be pointed out, only hinted at using the IRS in this way, and that was enough to draw up articles of Impeachment. Posted by: Common Tater at January 13, 2018 09:49 PM (043pn) 142

Bezos donation...
The equivalent of someone worth $1 million giving $310 to charity. But newsworthy because...? Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be praised by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. --Matt 6: 1-4 Posted by: bonhomme at January 13, 2018 09:54 PM (zGsgt) 156

Still alive and still married to the same rich guy. She was certainly a sultry minx in the 60s.

I can remember being in grade school back during the Cuban Missile Crisis. My school was three blocks from Stapelton Airport. (I found out later that it was a Soviet target because it had runways long enough to launch B-52's) Somebody accidentally set off the air raid warning. Every kid could see how scared and panicked the teachers were. Of course we were herded into the hallways and did the duck and cover drill. Now I know that all that would have done was make us more compact charcoal briquets. When we were finally let go, I'm damn sure that I ran a three minute mile getting home.

Galveston's Airport, Scholes Field, was originally a WWII bomber training base.
It can land anything in the air, with the possible exception of a fully loaded Galaxy, AN-124 or Airbus A-380. I've seen AF-2 (Boeing 757) land there with Vice President Cheney, for example. Nowdays, there are no commercial gates at the terminal. The field flies lots of General Aviation, as well as a tremendous amount of helicopter traffic, both in support of the offshore oil industry, as well as support of Life Flight & Law Enforcement birds. In other words, the place is under-utilized. So, I hereby declare it to be the leading candidate as an airbase for the H.Q. of Air Pinochet One Way Airlines. Plus, the Gulf of Mexico is only 'bout a quarter mile from the South end of the main runway. We could build bleachers, and sell tickets, right on the seawall! I can just imagine hearing all the "oooooohhhs" and "aaaaahhhhhssss!". Like fireworks, only better! Uncle Palp can have the popcorn vending contract. Lots of nieces in Ao-Dai roving the stands... To be pedantic, the term would be "intersex". Real human hermaphrodites are pretty rare. I'm trying to remember some informed speculation about might have been the trouble with Jamie Lee, just what intersex condition it could've been. I remember reading that somewhere. Intersex are almost always sterile (with rare exceptions, which are themselves quite a "miracle" to study). So, if someone ever has children, then intersex can be ruled out. And there is a difference between intersex and trannies. The former is a mistake by nature in the sex differentiation process, and there many things that can go wrong. It's rare, about 0.1% or something like that of live births, but it happens. What is done depends on the details of whatever condition it is. I have sympathy for intersex. They can't help it. But Jamie Lee is still a big idiot, based on her idiocy, not her birth. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at January 14, 2018 12:06 AM (8O3HH) 454

Even via a simple Newtonian analysis, you can see that negative mass is just sort crazy talk, wild. Those of you with some interest in this consider this: F = ma. What happens if m is negative. You push on a negative mass, what the hell does it do? Now gravitationally. g = GM/r^2, the acceleration field. What does a negative mass do gravitationally? Now, put a negative mass and regular positive mass together, and let them interact gravitationally. What happens? Be careful about the signs and accelerationf fields. The result is wild, as you'll see. The GR result is even wilder, in a sense. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at January 14, 2018 12:32 AM (8O3HH) 477

Newton is just a stopgap though. As Newton himself admitted, he didn't have a theory as to WHY two massive objects should pull on each other. He just noted that they did. Newton certainly didn't have a concept of negative mass. He'd probably have had us hanged for suggesting it, next to that counterfeiter. >> mansplain it to me
I ain't much of man anymore, so I'll have to wimp-splain I guess. No dark matter would have to be regular old positive mass. Even dark energy is positive mass (just has negative pressure, and relativistic pressure, at that, that acts somewhat like negative mass). Negative mass would be negative energy. E = mc^2. It is gravitationally repulsive. And it repels everything, itself and positive mass. Positive mass attracts everything, including negative mass. So, Netwonian gravity wise, put an equal magntiude positive and negative mass some distance apart. The negative mass repels the positive mass, but the positive mass attracts the negative mass. The center of mass of that system would accelerate off to unlimited velocity. Wait a minute, you say. Well, momentum is conserved. No matter how fast the positive mass gets going, the negative mass is right there dragged along with it and the minus sign gives it negative momentum. The total is thus zero, what it was to start with. So, two masses accelerate off without limit, gravitationally. That's what I meant by wild and crazy. Video game developer Creative Assembly makes a game series called "Total War". The games are basically open sandbox campaigns set during a particular historical era (ranging from Alexander to the Boshin War in Japan). The series is best known for its tactical battles, which allow you to march formations of animated men around the battlefield to fight similar enemy units.
Creative Assembly just announced their next big game in the series - Total War: Three Kingdoms. The setting, as the name suggests, will be the Three Kingdoms era in China. That setting is best known due to the Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". As the title suggests, it's more of a romance than a history text, and can best be described as "loosely based on events that might be actual". It's been interesting to watch the fall-out from the announcement. The groups can be lumped into the following groups - 1.) The people who are excited about the new game. A lot of them think that it's about time that Total War featured China in a game (the series has been around since 2000, and has included Japan and India; this will be the first time that China has appeared in any capacity). 2.) The fans who are upset that the game will be influenced by the novel, and fear that we're about to get "Total Dynasty Warriors". The trailer (which depicts a likely fictitious battle described in the novel) hasn't helped in this regard. 3.) The fans who are rabidly upset that Creative Assembly is not making a game set in Europe, and that any game not set in Europe will be an utter disaster (note that the only two games that haven't been predominantly set in Europe so far are the two games set in Japan; one of them was the very first Total War game). 4.) The racists. At least a couple of them are like the fans in number 3, but injecting race into the equation. But there are also a number of pro-Chinese fans that are busily belittling and mocking European civilization, usually with highly erroneous facts and figures. I'm guessing that a certain amount of these on both sides are trolls. It's been interesting, albeit annoying, to watch the back and forth over this. >> So what you're saying is that freaky circus sex with lizardoids from the 8th Dimension in the inner photosphere of Tau Ceti 5 during Lent just got a whole lot more possible?
-------------- Well as Mr. Wolf cautioned, let's not start sucking each other's dicks or whatever appendages the lizardoids sport just yet. That's Newtonian. In GR, well, you that arrangement is the basic for something called the Alcubiere Warp Drive (spelling is fucked up, look it up). It doesn't do FTL, just warps spacetime such that light goes a hell of a lot faster in the bubble that elsewhere. With "exotic matter", which is stuff like negative mass-energy and other deviant stuff in the stress-energy tensor which is the source of the Einstein GR gravitional field, you can do really debauched stuff with spacetime. You make spacetime do butt stuff, so to speak. And worse. ATM, etc. But there's all sort of problems with this. So we can't start sucking. Even if it would work, you'll need a lot of it for such a "warp drive". Several solar masses worth of such negative mass. And the same amount of positive mass. Your warp engine is going to be a humdinger of a power drain. And weigh as much as several stars. And quantume field theory doesn't like it. You might just blow yourself up if you created the warp field. And then there are possible causality violations. That what can happen when you make spacetime do buttsuff. Really, this is all just wild theoretical musing. -------------------- They're not real particles, just something that acts like them mathematically. And thus it's not real negative mass, just something like looks like it. Another example is in superconductors. You can model what happens by equations that pretend the photon has a rest mass. A massive photon. That doesn't really happen, it's just a mathematical equivalence. Another example, "Solitons". This is just a vibration mode of a crystal lattice that can be mathematically treated as quantum "particle". It's a wave packet that can be treated as a particle. Two great people with brains and hearts... worthy of loving... hey, who knows? Talk with her. I had literally given up, devoting myself to nachos, alcohol, pizza, antarctic ungulate porn, alcohol, solitude, curry, alcohol, and assorted time wasters - my life. Literally. Given. Up. The finest women I have ever known dropped into my life out of the blue. One year later, she still puts up with me. Unbelievable. I have lost 15 lbs, hit the gym 6 days a week, and am looking at a career move that, while a mixed blessing emotionally, will knock out the 15 hour 7 day a week BS... Dreams do occasionally come true. The Lady in question is a Known Quality. Talk with her. Can't hurt. Posted by: In Vino Veritits in a Pike Chair Beep-Beep at January 14, 2018 01:42 AM (t3kPl) 553

They're not real particles, just something that acts
like them mathematically. ---------- That is a big problem. Science journalists, if you can call them, are more journalist that scientist, and nowadays they aren't even that. They don't know what they're talking about, and can't describe it. It's best to always go to the actual paper, if available, and see what the ones who do know what they're talking about actually said, rather than what the idiots writing about it for popular consumption say. >> came from as I ever did see ... Spacetime, in a classic Schwarzschild black hole solution doesn't do buttstuff, save at one "point" (and when talking about GR and curved spacetime, "point" is not exactly what you think), where it blows up. Singularity, infinite curvature. Bad. But it ain't causality violated bad. The singularity is not "naked". It can't causally effect the outside. Spacetime doing real buttstuff is when such "abomination" can effect the outside world. But no one thinks there are real singularities. Stumbled onto Camille Paglia ripping the Dems, the Clintons to shreds while standing up for Trump.
A small taste: There seems to be a huge conceptual gap between Trump and his most implacable critics on the left. Many highly educated, upper-middle-class Democrats regard themselves as exemplars of "compassion" (which they have elevated into a supreme political principle) and yet they routinely assail Trump voters as ignorant, callous hate-mongers. These elite Democrats occupy an amorphous meta-realm of subjective emotion, theoretical abstractions, and refined language. But Trump is by trade a builder who deals in the tangible, obdurate, objective world of physical materials, geometry, and construction projects, where communication often reverts to the brusque, coarse, high-impact level of pre-modern working-class life, whose daily locus was the barnyard. It's no accident that bourgeois Victorians of the industrial era tried to purge "barnyard language" out of English. https://preview.tinyurl.com/yb2jgwfw Posted by: gNewt at January 14, 2018 05:45 AM (npy6a) 626
