Funny I think any job in federal, state, county, or city government is the best paying welfare there is. The military is the one exception to that rule.
You know how the left loves to yell about how "red states" get more welfare money than "blue states" and its all hypocrisy etc. What they do is count up all federal dollars sent to states and declare it all to be welfare. But most of that going to "red states" is not to pockets of poor people, but military bases etc. When the federal government owns more than 75% of some western states, that is going to cost some money. Its not welfare, its just federal spending. "Blue States" aren't usually big military places although there are exceptions (San Diego for instance). "Did anyone throw away a few minutes of their life and watch Miller and Tapper on the idiot box? Executive summary?"
Miller goes on the Sunday programs to be a one-inning closer. So he kept pitching over and over that the Wolff book is false down to its page numbers, while Tapper tried to get Miller to concede that particular things were true. False in one, then false in all v. True in some, then true in all. This of course degenerated into their talking over each other (what Miller wanted) and then into a shouting match, until Tapper pulled the plug. Isostasy. Look it up. Continents and oceanic crust alike float on the Earth's semi-fluid mantle. Weight of massive icecaps on Greenland and Antarctica forces those continents to float lower than they otherwise would. Melt the icecaps, and they will bob up again. Weight of added water in ocean basins will force them down, a teeny, tiny bit. Whole process is imperceptibly slow, in human terms, and quite unlikely to be any kind of a disaster. I am also embarrassed somewhat when some one says "Thank you for your Service" when I know I was not in really much danger serving on an Aircraft Carrier in the Med.
That's like being embarrassed someone loves your album when all you did was play rhythm guitar. OK you didn't sing lead or do the guitar solos, but who cares, the whole band is what made the song, even if you're not in the lead. Everyone who serves, serves. People who are in the rear pushing papers are important too, its a team effort that everyone does together. That spear only reaches as far as it does because of its full length. The head of it does the damage, but even that back end of the pole away from the enemy has to be there to give it reach. If you served honorably, then you are every bit as worthy of respect and thanks as the people who were up at the pointy end of the spear. "And I assume, like AZ voters, UT voters will just sit there like idiots and support him no matter what he does - or be satisfied with insultingly transparent explanations and promises."
You're leaving out the most important word that explains everything. M-O-R-M-O-N Romney is running to be the official representative of the Mormon Church in D.C., and the Mormon Church has already signaled that they want him there. So his election is guaranteed already, and the actual policies he supports are completely secondary to that. Arizona and Nevada have the most Mormon influence after Utah, and that explains their Mormon politicians like Jeff Flake and Harry Reid. You should know that Mormons believe in Open Borders, since they want all of their brown brothers and sisters to be able to come here and join the Mother Church. Texas is an actual Republican state - Utah is a Mormon Republican state. They are not the same thing at all. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 07, 2018 12:44 PM (V2Yro) 138

Gracias, Ignoramus. So the ludicrous buzz/hysteria/kerfuffle over the stupid book is over by .... Tuesday? Probably.
Back to Senate stuff. Yesterday in his brief presser at Camp David Trump said some very discouraging stuff, at least if it's the whole story. When asked about campaigning against/replacing GOP incumbents, he looked over at Ryan and said "um, no". Repeated his statement that he needs more GOP in Congress (at least towards the end he tossed in the key detail that he needs more GOP that support his MAGA agenda). This is not what should be said at this point. Incumbents who are up, and who are not solid, absolutely should fear a challenge. "Infrastructure," which he wasn't asked about, is exactly the wrong thing to push at this point. Opposite of wedge issue - embodiment of incumbent hog-trough self-promotion in which everybody feasts. You get little to no differentiation from the opposition with "infrastructure". And that's what you need, if you need to increase your head-count in Congress. And Trump desperately needs to do that, if he's going to get serious work done. Posted by: Very Unstable Semi-Genius, AKA rhomboid at January 07, 2018 12:46 PM (QDnY+) 142

I disagree about infrastructure, I think it IS a wedge issue. Here's why - Democrats have promised to oppose everything Trump does, they are locked into that. So now Trump can propose giving them things they always wanted, and they (to play up to their base) are going to fight him and kill it.
So Trump can talk about infrastructure and all the good things he wants to do, and get all the political credit for it, and it will never happen because the Dems will kill it even though they are Dem friendly programs. Disagree on infrastructure, Tom. Let's see. I wouldn't be surprised to see "free votes" start to happen on the Dem side, in selected districts/states. It always does during election cycles.
Even if your prediction is true, it's a very weak differentiation factor. Dems are rightly seen as unsurpassed champs of pork - by their own and other voters. And "infrastructure" was not a key issue that made Trump president. Infrastructure (besides being nonsense for the most part anyway) is the very last thing you want taking up votes and headlines (if we get back to actually having votes, but that still awaits someone in leg affairs explaining to Trump that lack of regular order in appropriations means essentially no politics in Congress, as has been the case since 2009). I think Infrastructure is a wedge issue.
Done well it can be a good thing. Think about Ike's highways. I know there's a risk here, but if you couple it with severe budget cuts to truly wasteful spending (Obama's ongoing Stimulus boondoggle) you balance out Demand and we'll actually have something to show for the spending. Politically you can use it to fuck up Democrats. If the Rs pick up a few Senate seats, then you can peel off a few Ds with the lure of Infrastructure and then horse trade. Posted by: Ignoramus at January 07, 2018 12:59 PM (pV/54) 175
No, infrastructure is not a win-win, it's close to nothing, or a lost opportunity.
House races especially do not run on whether some wacky "resistance" to a president has been upheld in a pure fashion. It's what-have-you-done-for-me-lately. When I was directly involved there wasn't a single case of "infrastructure" or any other pork-barrel item being a wedge issue, and I'd be curious to see how it has ever worked that way in a mid-term cycle. Should I talk to an accountant perhaps?
Posted by: Secret Square at January 07, 2018 12:44 PM (9WuX0) There are a number of free services put on by cities and groups like AARP and such that are income based, and there are online tax preparation services that you might start with that will let you run your numbers to see what they think. My experience is that an accountant will run you 150 and up, but if you catch them early when they have time they might be interested for a nominal fee to peruse your return and give and estimate. Ask, all they can say is no or "pay me first" Watch out for the ones that give you wildly different amounts for refunds, since some are more interested in getting a percentage of your refund and your fee than making sure you don't have a deficiency with the IRS charging you penalties and interest and sending you love letters. 108 I am also embarrassed somewhat when some one says "Thank you for your Service" when I know I was not in really much danger serving on an Aircraft Carrier in the Med.
Posted by: Ignoramus ++++++++ Real infrastructure like roads is one of the few things where I do think you need government spending and it does economically have a multiplier effect. That being said, we need some reforms tied to it like a with Davis-Bacon that basically guarantees absurd prices are paid for federal projects. Also, I want zero public transportation projects funded. Those are always boondoggles. Posted by: Apache at January 07, 2018 01:06 PM (uc45P) 188

Ignoramus your assertion is incoherent. I'm talking about now, the next 9 months, the actual mid-term cycle that determines the make-up of the next Congress.
Infrastructure has no traction on vulnerable Dems - and that's all that matters here. Name a single vulnerable Dem up in '18 who will either not easily vote *for* pork-barrel as long as their state gets its share, or who would be hurt by voting against. It's a null set. After 20 years of making "infrastructure" one of their standing, mindless chants, Dems have not the slightest discomfort with any of it. Those up in '18 can easily vote for it. Only by assuming that, for the first time in history, those needing to vote for something for their race will *not* be allowed to by party leadership, can we gin up any real divide over infrastructure. Immigration policy - wedge issue. Ultimate wedge issue (as the Dems largely carry water even *their* base is not enthused about). Infrastructure - ultimate bipartisan incumbent-promotion issue - going on decades now. Posted by: Very Unstable Semi-Genius, AKA rhomboid at January 07, 2018 01:06 PM (QDnY+) 192

I'm tired of this poor-mouthing all the time. It's a pay-off to union labor. Let's call it what it is. I'm glad your state actually spent the Stimulus money on that instead of homosexual dog walking paths and grrl power theater. But in Oregon, we got a ton of signs and a few minor repair jobs on a couple bridges. When Engineers line up and say "this crap is old and needs replacing" I don't spit on their word. When guys who work at Portland General Electric say their system yellow lines every night when people get home and turn on everything, I don't laugh in their face. And as I expected, even right here in the comments, we have the usual vague and misplaced support for "infrastructure". Misplaced because most of it never has been and should not be federal, and we're talking federal votes for federal $.
Which just underlines that it's not a divisive issue that can be mined. Only by assuming the most vulnerable Dem senators, whose seats need to be picked up, will not be able or willing to do the most rudimentary political tap-dance, can you see this as an issue to drive them from office. Which is all I'm talking about. This is not the House O-care "Marpi Clifs" mass suicide of 2010. There's no O, there's no O-care, and Schumer is desperate not to let the numbers get close to 60 for the GOP. And yes, Mitt has a good chance of emulating McCain's long-term damage to the country. I'm guessing most here who seem to think vulnerable Dems will non-chalantly oppose "infrastructure" waste are magically assuming that Davis-Bacon is gone, and that organized labor is not still an absolutely essential part of most Dems' $ and campaign resources? That bill would never past Constitutional muster.. it would be thrown out in the first year. Besides.. it is stupid. You want to take away a state's right to govern how a concealed carry permit is granted? Some states require absolutely no training, etc.. but now, all of a sudden they can come into your state and be allowed to carry? It's one of those bills that sounds good on the face of it.. but dumb, in the end. Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at January 07, 2018 01:18 PM (5tSKk) I think you have it backwards. My PA driver's license is valid in all 50 states, but my PA concealed carry permit is not. That makes no sense whatsoever. This bill would fix that. The impetus for this bill was a PA resident, a black nurse, who had a PA carry permit. She was stopped in NJ and thrown in jail. Governor Christie had to issue a pardon to get her out. She said that Fitzpatrick lied to her face when he said he would support the bill. He is dead to me. Posted by: rickl at January 07, 2018 01:25 PM (sdi6R) 243

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency."
The backstory ... In Wolff's book, Bannon is quoted as saying of Mueller's prosecutors: "They’re going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.'" Be smart: While Bannon's statement may seem like a baby step, he's as stubborn as Trump when it comes to apologizing and admitting he has made a mistake. He views any concession as a sign of humiliating weakness. Posted by: Acme Trucking Enterprises, White Truck Division at January 07, 2018 01:25 PM (2FqvZ) 246

The Wolff book is about events from a year ago. Few expected Trump to win, even in his inner circle. When he did, they went into a feeding frenzy to maximize their position and advantage.
And they all behaved badly. Priebus and Bannon and Jarvanka leaked and leaked. And back-stabbed. And daid and did things they shouldn't have. I believe the story that Ivanka put a dollar in the Hobo's coffee cup. And now they've all been fired -- Ivanka as much as you can fire family. This should be old news. The fact is, that is a fairly common sentiment among the elites and coastal blue-staters. they have little knowledge and less respect for the people in uniform. They know virtually nothing of military history, the military mindset, strategy, logistics, tactics, theory, or requirements.
I live in a heavily Dem-dominated area, and the contempt that many of them hold for the military is palpable. They have no idea that only about 25% of American 18 year olds could qualify and join if they tried. Most of my students have a "only losers and morons would consider enlisting" attitude.
