Friendswood gun range closed after accidental shooting
By Lindsay Ellis Updated 6:21 pm, Sunday, January 7, 2018 Best Shot Range in Friendswood closed Sunday after a gunshot injury caused by a weapon malfunction. A man was shooting a handgun at the range, and when he attempted to clear the weapon, the gun discharged, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. That agency, in a post to Twitter, called the discharge a "malfunction" and said the shooter was hospitalized in "good condition." The shooting range's management said in a statement that an investigation is underway and that all safety measures were taken. In a foul wind, one puts a reef or two in the mainsail, flies the smallest jib, and trims the sheets to reduce weather helm to a minimum.
And in a hurricane at sea, all sails are secured to the boom & forestay or stricken below, the storm drogue is deployed overboard, and the drogue-sail is attached to the aft end of the boom and topping lift, with the boom fixed to about five degrees off of center-line. Then, the realist of a sailor retired below decks, and enjoys a hot meal, previously prepared but now re-heated, in the surprisingly stable cabin, as the drogue holds the ship's position nearly without drift, as the storm in it's rage, passes by. The realist also tends to be the most well prepared sailor, in skill, experience and equipment alike. "Running Before the Storm", a nautical tactic rendered obsolete (except to hard core ocean racers), since the popular acceptance of the Storm Drogue in the late '70s into the mid '80s, and on through today. So the storm sail is abaft the boom? Just wanted to use "abaft". Posted by: Miklos will have some Port, thank you at January 07, 2018 11:50 PM (zCyNd) Ridding my nic of last night's loathesome sock. *click* Now then. The Storm Sail lays atop the boom, at the aft end of the boom. Unless you're aboard a ketch or a yawl, the only thing abaft the boom is "air", with usually, a portion of the cockpit and lazarette below. Often, the Storm Sail is an absurdly heavy weight of Dacron sailcloth, and less often, the exotic materials such as Kevlar and such. As often as Dacron is found though, would be a Storm Sail made of a flat, rigid fiberglass matrix, as this "sail" has absolutely no need to attain an aerodynamic shape when aloft. Typical Storm Sail size for a 40 ft. sloop, would be an equilateral triangle, of 4 ft. to a side. It's purpose is to keep the boat from "swinging at anchor", across the typical 70 degree arc of an unrestricted scope. The Storm Sail is the "vane" to the weathervane's "arrow", so to speak. Keeps the bow of the boat pointed a few degrees off of the wind. Also, the Storm Drogue is deployed off the same "off side" of the boat as is the Storm Sail's offset. The Drogue is deployed with a "pullback" line, which is deployed from the mainsheet winch, and sets the hull at about a 10 degree angle off-center with the direction of pull on the Drogue's main line. The combination of all this, sets the boat up to only "hunt" or "swing" on the Storm Drogue (a.k.a. "sea anchor") through about a 15 degree arc, which is enough to keep the bows pointed INTO the seas, thus preventing the dreaded condition of one having broached in mountainous seas. The record is clear. The average vessel which sets a properly sized and deployed Parachute Storm Drogue, can expect to drift no more than about five miles from it's position from when the Drogue was deployed, in a 24 hour period. And yes, these are records from innumerable boats in hurricane force winds and seas. Myself? I won't sail out into the Gulf, aboard a boat lacking such a system on board. I don't generally get to peruse AoS until the end of my day......so I start at the 1st thread after the previous days ONT and go from there.... When I found CBD's Mid Morning thread......well, let me just say that comment number 11, by the Indomitable Irongrampa summed things up quite eloquently. He must be from Appalachia....cause His words were EXACTLY what came to mind when I read what that Dumbfuck "Rep" had posted. Gramps comment also made me smile, because it showed that AoS is a Haven for Americans. Americans that KNOW what it means to be a Citizen of The Greatest Country On Earth. Citizens that Die for the right for worthless Fucktards like the "rep" to spew their Dumbfuckery. And that's just it........those dumbfucks don't understand that Citizens will only be pushed so far. Once we are.....well the dumbfucks will no longer be an annoyance. El Supremo advocates a peaceful dissolution of this Beacon of Liberty from time to time......an I fervently agree with that peaceful daydream. I pray that's how it would play out..... But, if the "reps" words are any indication.......peacefully will not be an option. Whew......OK......got that outta the system. Thank y'all for the outlet. Anyways, anyone watch any playoff Westboro Ball today? I did.....An enjoyed the competition. Although, I thought Tyrod Taylor mighta had his neck broke on that last hit......thankfully it was only a concussion. Sorry, been watching an interesting piece on Loot Boxes:
https://tinyurl.com/yckleu24 The youtuber is very incensed against the lootbox trend. I would agree, but I do not agree that what we need is legislation to combat this. He also misses the point that EA is a business. His argument seems to be that because EA has only increased their revenue astronomically by introducing gambling rather than making good games that they are intrinsically doing something wrong. It may be shortsighted in the long term to do so, but it is obviously not wrong economically. People are still giving them money, which means the company is doing something right since people keep rewarding them with cash. It may be distasteful. It may be sad. Kind of interesting. That this mirrors say, american pro football in an interesting line of thought. Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 08, 2018 01:07 AM (ycWCI) 486

Wading into a very complicated topic, but one of the big problems is lack of transparancy on gambling mechanics and lack of any kind of warnings or limitations to keep very young children from spending their parents cash. Some companies will give detailed breakdowns of odds, I think China requires they all be detailed, so any company also releasing their game there will have that information public. A few of those also set daily limits or outright prohibit purchases by children. A lot of the revenue is from willing participants with plenty of disposable income. Most people are usually okay with that part. The fact is that gambling mechanics bring in boatloads of money and that is why it has become widespread practice. EA just happens to make mediocre or bad games a lot on top of having introduced this so it gets more heat. Plenty of other big developers like Blizzard and Valve have had similar systems for years now. Posted by: Sjg at January 08, 2018 01:31 AM (gDSJf) 497

Lootboxes are okay if they're done within reason-if there's a way to get keys in game that doesn't involve the cash shop, and the in game key generation is close to the box drop rate, because then you open up an oportunity to make in game economic decisions about whether you want the shot at what's in the box, or you'd rather sell your boxes and keys to players that want them. LotRO is pretty good at this in the areas I've seen, though the forums are full of complaints about the new box/keys in Mordor.
Star Trek Online did it the wrong way, at least when I was playing. Everyone got a zillion boxes and no keys, so you couldn't sell them, and couldn't mass destroy them at a vendor, which made for a lot of pointless clicking to drop them from inventory, and therefore unhappy players. Also, it's kind of a problem if the best available stuff is in the lootboxes, rather than as rewards for endgame group content. But to the extent it's cosmetics and trivial stat boosts, I don't care much. Dershowitz used to sort of piss me off. He may have changed, or I may have, or likely both. He's still a lefty, but he's not a crazy SJW. And that makes him almost seen conservative by comparison. His support of Israel is strong, of course, and that puts him at odds with the SJW bunch as well. And on this RUssia shit, he points out just how stupid the whole thing is. A lot of western mainstream titles take that approach. Cosmetic items or minor conveniences only from microtransactions. The mobile and casual game markets are completely flipped around though with the most successful games allowing you to buy your way to the top. This is also pretty standard practice in a very large percentage of games in China and Korea. It doesn't necessary make for the best game experiences, but the profit margins are undeniable. With so many kids growing up with pay to win games on their phones now, I imagine a lot of the stigma is going to disappear in the next few decades. Outside of games that are marketing themselves as competitive esports, I'm guessing pay to win will only get more pervasive. Posted by: Sjg at January 08, 2018 01:51 AM (gDSJf) 513

They have two, yes just two, mod packs that no one buys because they are random. EVERYTHING else you know exactly what you are buying when you lay down money. Plus, everything that has an impact on gameplay can be gotten through gameplay (and the most important stuff can really ONLY be gotten through gameplay- the special mods- although these can be traded for in game currency which can be bought- or also earned through trading items in game.) Warframe still has its share of detractors because the primary gameplay loop of obtaining new gear can be entirely skipped by buying everything with real money. Of course it's not a really competitive game so it doesn't suffer too much for it, but I figured I would note it. The gold standard for "ethical" monetization models is limiting real money purchases to only having cosmetic effects in game. Very minor convenience options are still generally well-received, but when the game decends into laborious effect to match a player spending money it starts getting a lot of pushback. That's pretty much where EA was with the battlefront drama. Combined with an exceptionally poor PR response on reddit, a site which already has a culture of huge lynch mobs. Good night, Jim!
After Christmas sub-zero temperatures, and this week's blizzard, with same temperatures, I still want to leave Taxxachusetts & move to Marble Falls, Texas. I have three rooms with no heat. I ordered 2 12 mm shades for sunporch and Home Depot would deliver here free. There is a large picture window in there and I ordered a 51 inch shade & they wanted $55 to ship shade to my home. I have to go to store to have 2 18.5 inch shades custom cut. I had ugly turquoise curtains with rubber backing that I have had up for 5 or 6 years & washed according to directions. Four fell apart & we put up beautiful supposedly all season drapes last summer. There is draft from that room into hall, living room, even bathroom. I hope new shades help. I have 4 towels in there and heavy blanket in hall. I wish I had left ugly crtains alone to put up in winter. I need my roommate to help me put up new shades, he wouldn't Saturday because it was too cold. Posted by: Carol at January 08, 2018 02:09 AM (NKOy9) 535

The coins start out easy to obtain but become more difficult. Technology advances and older gear becomes cheaper each turn, counteracting the increased difficulty, but still requires more electricity. Do you sell your coins early at cheap rates to reinvest, or hold onto them hoping for later value? The market is unpredictable, and fluctuates a bit based on die rolls each turn. My first (and really, last) MMORG game was Diablo i, ii, iii. The servers were financed by the games purchasers.
It was possible to trade items thru the forums, and there were even certified brokers to assist in the trades. There also sprung up an unofficial trading website, where items were bought and sold, and 'accounts' were kept in scrip. I was wealthy in the realm. The development of scrip led to the dawning of bots to 'mine' for items. In retrospect, this whole scenario was the precursor to bitcoin mining. Fuckity. I coulda been rich. Late to the thread but "They Issued a Warrant for a Dog License!!!11!!!" Boy apparently didn't respond to prior reminders and a ticket last year (i.e., 2017). Article stated that reminder mailers are sent out in January, again a few months later with a ticket finally being issued after 6 months of the recipient being unresponsive.

Someone with no political, public service experience, and so famous that their name is sometimes synonymous with capitalism? Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 08, 2018 06:53 AM (EyPfd) 592
Just wondering.
Did they really make beads by hand or did they just not have beads until the white man brought them (from Japan presumably)? Was the Bowie knife really a part of their way of life, considering it was invented by James Bowie in the early part of the 19th century? Smells faintly like cultural appropriation to me. Good song though. Posted by: Heresolong at January 08, 2018 10:13 PM (K+rrH) Processing 0.09, elapsed 0.1006 seconds. |
