8 Border collie? My money is on a border collie or close relation.

They'll find him dead in the snow tomorrow because he enjoyed it so much that he did it without any consideration to hydration, warmth, etc.

We had one that nearly died chasing a freaking ball like that. Stupid in one of the most incredibly smart ways you'll ever see an animal be.

Also understood pointing, depth and distances, and sign language.

Damn she was a great dog.

I have an australian cattle dog. When he was about 6 months to a year old, he had so much energy I was searching every pet store for toys to occupy him.

I bought him this bottle and rope contraption. You could unscrew one end and then place treats in there. The idea is that they would tug and swing on the rope and treats would fall out.

I filled the thing up and he sniffed all over it. He kept sniffing the screw end and then the open end and kind of looked at it befuddled. I turned around in my chair and thought "Good toy."

So then I noticed it was awful quiet. I turned the chair back around and he had the bottle half empty laying beside him and an entire pile of treats that he was noshing on at his leisure. I am thinking "How in the heck did he do that!?"

So I praised him, but scooped up all the treats and put them back in the bottle. I gave it back to him and then watched. At first he just nosed it while I was watching him, so I turned back around and tried not to make it so obvious that I was watching him.

After a minute I noticed him moving out of the corner of my eye, so I turned my head. What he did next was hilarious! He positioned the bottle so he was kind of holding the small end in his paws, then he grabs the large end with his mouth- and shakes the bottle. Treats rained out all over the place.

Smart dog.

71 Sorry to be a killjoy, but the dog has simply been trained to drag the sled up the hill and slide it back down, or vice versa. (You can see this when he reaches the bottom of the hill, pauses and looks up toward his unseen handler for his cue). An extrinsic reward protocol was set up at the outset of the training to develop the behavior. The dog may or may not "enjoy" the activity (he probably has learned to, in a canine sense, for the reward in form of physical interaction with his handler) but no initial, intrinsic "enjoyment" or sense of fun impelled the dog toward these complex actions which have no relationship to instinct. Border collies are especially adept at learning these sorts of chain behaviors.

I just googled it, and it looks nothing like the first dog I had as a kid, which I was told was supposed to be a fox terrier. We were dirt poor, so I'm pretty sure it was a mongrel given to us for free, and it probably had a fox terrier somewhere in its lineage. Good little dog.

Ours ran and played a lot, but she also just wanted to have something to do. The lab would squeak her new Christmas toy for hours and hours, but the border collie would need you to need HER to be doing something.

We got to where we were teaching tricks even though we had no real interest in them just because her brain needed it.

Never destructive, fortunately, but she was older and at the pound when we got her.

92 Daughter's dog is a boxer/Am.Staff./lab/Australian Cattle Dog mix and is..uhh... *bouncy*. I've been trying to get her interested in frisbees but she's not having it. She's only recently gotten into the idea of chasing tennis balls. However, she did figure out how to open the back door within a day or two of us bringing her home. She watches and picks stuff up constantly. Damn dog would be boss of all of us if she had opposable thumbs and words.

115 Speaking of being an "Awe how sweet - no it's really not" killjoy - I saw a video the other day of this supposedly starving kitten who a homeless man found and gave up everything he had to nurse it and feed it and oh look at it now! All plump and healthy and wonderful!

Thing is, they had used a Cornish Rex or Devon Rex kitten as the before. Those are the hairless cats with distinctively oversized ears and scrawny bodies. Quite a wonderful cat. But they look like they live in North Korea.

Anyway, the 'after' cat was your regular plump housecat. Nothing wrong with it. But they switched breeds and made a made-up "how wonderful is this homeless man" story.

Two entirely different cats. And yet people on the website were falling all over their fool selves.

We've got an english pointer (pound dog) and have had our minds blown by how great of a family dog she is. Our border collie wanted to please and impress us, and the english pointer just wants to be with us and be touching us as we sit.

Very quiet unless she's hunting birds or lizards, and very tolerant with the kids. One is a special needs boy who doesn't always pet, approach, wake, pick up, etc. appropriately, and that dog loves him more than anyone else in our house.

I'd always figured labs were the hands-down best family dogs, but I'm at a coin-toss stage now. She has changed my mind completely.

I'm hoping she can go hunting with us next season, but she's terribly gun shy. We're working on it, though.

And Ravens are even worse. Sarcastic assholes.

Used to have them come around the campsite when we were on winter field problems and caw loudly when we were sleeping. I took to throwing snowballs at them, and they'd just ignore it (didn't help that I wasn't very accurate). The one time I was right on the money with a snowball, the bastard just hopped about a foot in the air to let it fly by. Then he turned and looked at me with contempt. Asshole.

Another time, I'm on a long forced march on this LONG stretch of road on post. This raven is sitting up on a telephone pole waiting for me to pass. As soon as I get close, he starts cawing loudly. Once I pass him by, he flies ahead to another telephone pole and waits for me. Starts cawing again. Flies ahead and waits. Rinse and repeat.

Fucker followed me like that for about 2 miles.

168 People don't realize it, but there is basically no difference between a crow and a raven. Biologists have been arguing about it for years, with some demanding the few physiological elements constitute a different classification, and others insisting it's just genetic offshoot that's too similar to fuss over.

The only real difference is in the long flight flight feathers (pinion feathers) on the tips of the wings. The crow has five, and a raven, while usually identified as a larger bird, only has four.

Dated a girl who had one of those. She lived on a lake, and the dog loved for you to throw a tennis ball out in the water for the games of fetch.

BUT, the best part was after she had puppies. She'd bring you the ball, you'd throw it out into the water, she'd crash in and paddle furiously to retrieve it, while the little puppies had chased her madly down to the water's edge and would wait patiently for her to get back so they could try to nip at it in her mouth as she brought it back to be thrown again.

Great dogs. Beautiful little thing, too.

Posted by: The Inexplicable Dr. Julius Strangepork at January 05, 2018 08:48 PM (LLBMw)

Yes. Also called a Queensland Heeler. Around 75% or so of the breed is 'blue' (black with white ticking) while the remainder are Red Heelers (red with white ticking.)

I have a pure bred Red Heeler. He's a good dog.

Otherwise, the wretched critter would chew furniture and books all day. Since we lived at the edge of town at the time, we wound up with several felines that had been dumped. The Sheltie kept trying to herd them no matter how many times they bloodied his nose. He just couldn't resist herding them. Or the furniture, for that matter.

After the German Shepherd died a few years back, I told Himself that I was sick and tired of dogs that were smarter than me. What do we have now? Number One dog is at least half Sheltie and Number Two dog has a lot of border collie in her.

350 Guess that why have had goldens for 50 years.

We've had four Goldens, and I too love them. I read somewhere that they have the longest puppyhood of all dogs---I believe it!

I also like Bearnese Mountain Dogs too, but I have never owned one, nor do I know anyone who does (except Sean Hannity lol.) I hear they are very good natured and more of the couch potato type. Good looking dogs.

We always get flu shots, but this seems to have be a cold and now a respiratory infection.

I'd better sign off and check on her. It's quiet. Too quiet. She might have her checkbook next to her version of the internet.

Have a wonderful weekend. And we will have another chance in the Spring.

352 The Most Racist?

A "trans-woman" model who recently threw a privileged temper-tantrum as a model, has declared that the U.K. is the most racist country.

Running the heater all the time is drying out my skin and making my fingers crack. Hurts.

354 I'd dearly love to have a black lab. They're such sweet dogs, especially the females. Alas, Casa Backwardio is too small of a rancho to accommodate one.

It's more like a ranchette.

Or a ranchito.

Per my vet friend, vet insurance is a scam and just a prepaid health savings account that you lose if you don't use it - it pays up to the cash value you have paid and no more. Better to just put $25 a month away, or whatever, where you control it. Unless you are insuring a breeder beast as an asset, thats different.

362 After many rescue mutts, we were down to one dog a few years ago. Our mostly black lab was aging and I insisted that our next dog would be dumb, lazy and come with his own playmate. So we got a pair of golden retriever brothers.

The lab helped me train them in no time and they adored her for her last years. They are perfect for us at this stage in our lives.

I have interceded on behalf of North America for a slight reprieve, in order to plead with you carbon sinners.

You are destroying the Vortex that protects you from these merciless, vicious climate atrocities.

Please! Reconsider your suicidal carbon addiction. Repent! There is still a small amount of time left.

We have probably 5 or 6 in our little village of 1000 people. They are handsome dogs but rather large. The ones I have encountered seemed very friendly. My grandfather gave me a golden when I was 13 in 1964. No one I knew in east TX had any idea what a golden retriever was at that time. And then suddenly everyone had one. Trend setter.

Sorry about the pathetic pun

My golden house trained himself. If you want frustration, try house training a bichon. Took about a year

366 That guy in Miami must really be tired of getting shot and killed.

How is that possible?

367 That's really awful what that dog did to yours though. I just realized that I probably came off as dismissive.

Yikes! Our most frustrating pooch was a beagle rescue. She had apparently been trained to be as dumb as a box of rocks. Then she figured her training was done. A real sweetie, tho.

369 OMG I fucked up.

Cleaned out the litter box and put in Preen, a pre emergent herbicide to top thr litter. Not a good move, J was not happy.

Caught the mistake, dumped it all.

Yikes, I'm a true Moron.

House training the late, much beloved Max, also a golden, was trivial. On bringing him home, we kept him outside until he peed.

After that, he always went outside to pee, because that was now the designated peeing area.

Logan was pretty painless too. I used the advice in the 'How to Raise a Puppy' by those monks. We took him outside right after feeding him and took him to the same section of backyard until he peed.

He's only had a couple of accidents over the years. Not a bad record.
