How'd that happen? When I was in college I worked Summers at a B&O freight yard in southwest Baltimore. My first day there they warned me never to walk on the tracks, especially at night, because of how quiet rolling cars could be. Inside I was rolling my eyes and speculating on how much hard drinking it took to not hear 20 tons on the move. But I wasn't a complete idiot and knew to stay between the tracks anyway. One night, not long after that, I was working the midnight shift and walking between tracks when something seemed unusual even though I couldn't actually hear anything. I shined my lantern a bit forward and to the side and there was a rolling empty flatcar as quiet as a tomb. My impression of the guys advising me got a quick upgrade.

The reporting of sealed indictments shouldn't alone, get anybody's panties moist. It isn't that far out of the ordinary, especially considering Sessions' emphasis on drugs (which could be a great mcguffin).
The interesting part is the areas in which the indictments have been issued-it might, to the creatively minded-look like as many indictments as possible have been requested as far away from the DC Circuit Court as possible, the one that broke the filibuster because Reid and Obama wanted to stack that unique court.

Several of the B ampersand O Yards were what is sometimes known as "Hump" yards. The track was graded with a deliberate grade to allow easier making up of freight trains. Move the car to the correct track, gentle nudge, and it would roll to the point where the train was being made up.

No, there was no grade to speak of. It had been propelled by a switcher at the far end of the yard and would couple up with cars behind me pretty loudly. Because empty flats are probably only about 12 tons, they will hardly cause a sound where two sections of rail meet because they don't cause the first rail to dip at all, particularly on reasonably maintained track beds.

What got largely overlooked when Devin Nunes went to the White House last year to be shown some secret evidence was what he saw. Most of the focus was given to Adam Schiff's petulant rant that Nunes went to the WH without any Democrats and he filed an ethics charge forcing Nunes to recuse himself temporarily.
What Nunes said at the time was that he was shown evidence that the Trump campaign was spied on when the FBI went after foreign actors. This kind of thing has been bubbling beneath the surface for a long time and it was Mike Rogers who last fall brought a lot of it to the surface infuriating guys like Clapper and Brennan.
About a month after Nunes made his statement a FISA court handed down a document confirming that widespread warrantless spying on Americans had indeed been going on for years on Americans.
This is all about to come out bigly. Rogers has done his job and now he can retire to a life of hookers and covefefe.

An insightful answer but it wasn't a hump yard. Since you know Baltimore it was the Mount Clair yard that served the Halethorpe bidnesses like A and P, Calvert Distillery and Carlings. There were meat yards pens there when I worked there in the late 60s and early 70s but they'd been defunct for a long time.
I think the Bay View yard on the east side of the city was a hump yard.

I watched CNN religiously during that war from my off base abode in Korea. That was when they finally started showing real time news on AFN. Before that, the news was about a half a day old by the time it was aired.

I've always believed the Obama administration bought some of those kids they brought over the border in that "unaccompanied minor" push. Philosophically they would see no problem with that as long as it supported the narrative.
Trump just announced that asset forfeiture counted for human trafficking as well and he seems convinced (I agree) that there is a strong connection between trafficking and illegal travel over the border. He recently mentioned visa overstays as well and there is a trafficking connection there as well.

Stocks go up for several reasons. You are right, one is monetary inflation: Printing more money. The money goes to the banks, they invest it in stocks, the market goes up because there is more money bidding on the current amount of stocks
Some of the other reasons are: More capitalization in the means of production -- that is more businesses are investing in their equipment they use to do stuff, and so they become more productive, and more profitable, and the extra money gets put into something, like more stocks since the companies are more profitable.
Also foreign money coming in. If Outer Slobovia is having economic troubles and it looks like the finance minister there will cause massive inflation, a default or a taking of some sort, then the citizens will try to find a safe haven for their money and that means in a lot of the world US currencies and stocks.
There will be a correction coming. The question is only if there will be something to offset it, like increased productivity or reduction in costs caused by regulation and restrictions. Some of the most hawkish inflation cassandras have become willing to consider something other than the end of the world, recently

It will not be sudden, but there will be a shift away from ownership of those properties, and the best avenue for those funds to go to will be the future. Many here probably don't remember, but the same thing happened after the 1986 tax bill, which radically changed the tax rules for investment property, and made it much less attractive than it had been previously.
(everything adjusts; in the long run, the tax bill of 1986 led to the rise of REIT's)

.We are in the same boat, the wife has three more years before retirement. we pulled all of our TSP (Federal 401k) money and put everything in to the Government G fund a few years ago. We don't make a huge amount of interest off it, right now it is 2.25% but we will always *make* money as the Fed adjusts the interest rate every quarter.
That plus the wife is making the max contributions they will let her make.

"Inflation" used to mean money supply, not it commonly means what used to be called "price inflation".
So there is definitely the old money supply inflation ... usually that shows up in prices of goods. With Obama's slower economy it did not show up much, but debt kept rising.
imo stocks and bonds are way overvalued ... but a fiat currency does that, and governments love to spend ever more. Keep giving money to the welfare class and keep making the rich richer and the middle worker gets to do the producing.
So we went to China for workers, and kept going in debt, and China is trying to buy up assets around the world (which to me is buying the country without bothering with war). Globalists don't mind this ... peoples that want to keep the heritage of their forefathers should stop them from "diversifying" us into their globalist machinery. Nations State sovereignty for the win.

That's a very good point. 90's didn't produce that much, unless you could find local stuff. If you weren't pumping out the crap the record companies wanted, you were shunned and there was some good stuff out there.
Funniest anecdote about Aerosmith I heard was during their dry spell in the late 70's early 80's and were largely strung out, someone sent a bottle, empty, to Steven Tyler and wrote "Inspiration" on the outside. He took it, then filled it with blow.....

Those peak oil people were literally cheering from the roof top that would spell the end of the US dollar as the World's reserve currency and this would hasten the collapse of the United States as a World power.
It flopped and they never sold a single barrel of oil based on the Euro, all currency exchanges were based on the USD.

If you really want high quality ribs, yes. $ per lb of meat v bone is up there.
That being said, don't fear it. Find a nice rub (don't bother inventing one as its largely been done, better) use some moisture on the meat to hold the rub (butter or mustard, usually, sometimes I use honey). Keep the heat below 300 and roll some smoke for a couple hours, then wrap in foil and put back out for a couple hours.
Fruit wood usually imparts a sweet smoke, so I recommend apple, cherry or peach. Overall, it just takes a bit of practice.

Don't cook much (because I am truly incompetent -- my brain does squirrel!), but St Louis style ribs are darned near like pork chops, ie, mostly meat and fat. I can't do the regular ribs as well, because of the meat/bone ratio -- kinda like chicken wings. Look for the St Louis ones because if prepared well (and easily), they are great. The fall off the bone can be used for many dishes and there is still a bone there to gnaw.

Three hours smoke at about 180, two hours at 225-250 in foil (added some brown sugar and honey and a splash of apple juice before sealing), then remove from foil, light coating of BBQ sauce of choice and let them tighten on the rack at 225 for 30-60 minutes. Falling off the bone tender.

But, I disagree with the methodology (too much dang work and soggy ribs as a result) and the resulting texture. "Falling off the bone" means overcooked.
If perfectly cooked, the meat should not fall off the bone but firm enough to stay on the bone and pull cleanly away from the bone when you bite.
Easy to do esp. with a wood-pellet grill.
So...method to achieve that:
1) Apply rub to rack of ribs. Let sit a minimum of an hour if possible.
2) Set WPG to 275*.
3) Place ribs in area of indirect heat.
4) Time:
3.5 hrs for baby back ribs
4-4.5 hrs for St Louis ribs
5) If you like dry ribs, just cook for the above period of time.
To test doneness - use tongs to pick up rack from the middle. Rack should bend and the meat just start splitting at the bone.
At this point, your ribs are perfectly done.
6) If you like wet ribs, roughly 30 min before they should be ready,
brush on your favorite BBQ sauce (I recommend Rufus Teague's Touch O'Heat) and let it glaze for 30 min.
Use the tong test above. And you are ready to eat.
Pro Tip: Nice pair of chicken scissors (or meat scissors) makes separating the ribs super easy.
A-a-a-a-and there you are....Go forth and sin no more in the realm of Ribby Goodness.

Freezing (32F) is fine and normal. Sustained subzero (0F) is where I am having problems. Reminding kids that bathroom doors must be closed, water must be trickling, and vents must be open. My freeze problem was from a big kid showering and closing the vent -- don't know why he did that.

I live on the top floor of a walkup tenement with a crappy roof. The roof gutter in the corner by my window is clogged with ice. As the snow and ice melt the water travels through cracks in the roof and drips through cracks in the window frame into my apartment. The water found a gap in my window and the ice began to build up so the window flopped open. Twice. And broke.
Good news? I managed to shove the windowpane back into its tracks so at least the window is closed and only the outside glass is broken. Hope I don't have to wait till spring for this to get fixed.
If I didn't have a rent stablized apartment and a fixed income, I'd be outta here in a New York minute. I'm getting too old for this.

Soda tax effects are being studied long term by a group given 2 million dollars, by the city. It will concentrate on health and usage. Sweet deal if you can swing it.
Costco put signs up above the hypertaxed sodas directing people to the nearest out of city Costco. Was really hoping they posted a price difference to tweak the council's nose.

Ie. that white people drink more soda than non-whites, so this tax would be a stealth way to get them to fund government programs for minorities.
So the response by Seattle isn't stupid. It's an outright lie.

Ann Coulter is smart but not wise. She thinks deeply about the superficial, and is superficially about the deep.
Her prediction in 2015 that Trump would become the next president was just to get a laugh on the Bill Maher show. Some conservatives seek to please liberals. She seeks to outrage them.
But she also sees the history of Republicans being lousy negotiators, so her alarm is not without foundation. People act in logical ways, and once you understand where they are coming from, you better appreciate their struggle.

Encinitas commissioners refuse to recite Pledge of Allegiance
Two commissioners -- Darius Degher, a Leucadia musician and poet, and Christina Simokat, a New Encinitas resident who teaches environmental science at Cal State San Marcos -- threw a spotlight on the standard agenda item when they both chose not to say the pledge during the commission's Dec. 11 meeting and sat while the other commissioners recited it.
Degher joined the seven-member board of unpaid volunteers last spring. He said Tuesday he has two main reasons for declining to participate. The first relates to the nation's current political conditions. He said he believes that President Donald Trump, Trump's former chief strategist Stephen Bannon and members of the far right are fomenting a "hyper-nationalist movement" by appropriating national symbols for their own ends and using them to try to silence people who oppose them.
"At this moment in which our democracy is being attacked from within, cheerfully standing for the pledge is like wearing bright colors in a funeral procession," he wrote in a statement that he's been giving out to people who ask about his decision to sit during the pledge.

Does anyone really think getting rid of rent regulations will magically free up more housing and lower rent costs? After 9/11, the city gave stipends to non rent regulated people who lived near the WTC to prevent a huge exodus.
All the landlords raised their rents.
