Iran Deploys Revolutionary Guards to Quell "Sedition"

As I think Selena Zito pointed out, this is a sign that local police are refusing to beat, arrest, or kill protesters themselves. Thus Iran has to call in their Murder Gangs.

Let us hope cops and regular soldiers join the uprising.

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards have deployed forces to three provinces to put down an eruption of anti-government unrest after six days of protests that have rattled the clerical leadership and left 21 people dead.

The protests, which began last week out of frustration over economic hardships suffered by the youth and working class, have evolved into a rising against the powers and privileges of a remote elite especially Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Defying threats from the judiciary of execution if convicted of rioting, protests resumed after nightfall with hundreds hitting the streets of Malayer in Hamadan province chanting: "People are begging, the supreme leader is acting like God!"

Videos carried by social media showed protesters in the northern town of Nowshahr shouted "death to the dictator" -- an apparent reference to Khamenei.

In a sign of official concern about the resilience of the protests, the Revolutionary Guards commander, Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said he had dispatched forces to Hamadan, Isfahan and Lorestan provinces to tackle "the new sedition".

And read this interesting post from sci-fi author John Ringo, who notes that while 2009's Green Revolution was mostly supported by women and soft-handed urbanites -- and opposed by stronger rural young men, who of course won out -- this current uprising is taking places in what you'd call rural or blue-collar areas of Iran, meaning the young, strong men they relied upon to crush the opposition last time might now be ranged against the mullahs.

Thanks to @Lauraw for that.

71 More than likely the cops don't have the manpower to deal with it. It would be like calling in the National Guard here to stop a riot.

The cops going over won't matter much unless they can get the military on their side...or even parts of the military.

Usually with these things there is some sort of figure the protesters can rally around. In 1979 it was Ayatollah Khomenei, and he was in Paris. I am unaware of any figure who could step in or serve as a rallying point to elevate this into an actual revolution.

But who knows? The Egyptian revolution a few years ago didn't have a central figurehead. They did appeal to the military to fix things so it ended up being Sisi.

So a military coup in Iran would likely lead to some general taking over. I don't see it happening, though.

The Basij are drawn from the same socio-economic groups as the protesters. Unlike the IRGC, the Basij live at home, which means they (and their families) have to worry about retribution on a very personal level.

The role of the ordinary police can be crucial. They can provide access to some waepons and ammo, but more importantly they have communication infrastructure apart from internet and telephone that the regime is limiting or shutting down.

114 I don't get the Bannon story except as false flag. All the people who have wanted to open up on Bannon have done so. Including Trump.

Wolff reports Bannon said this. Wolff has a reputation for fabricating quotes. No, really, look it up. If Bannon wanted to go to war with Trump, why would he do it in a book by a left winger? For a guy as Bannon-centric as Bannon is reported to be - and I don't have any reason to believe that he isn't - why would he let this type of bombshell to come out on someone else's paper? It isn't like Bannon doesn't have a platform of his own.

I don't know if he is a backstabber or a Scaramucci-style frontstabber, but this seems to be a dumb way to go about it.

And then everyone is obliging the whole "let's you and him fight" game.

Good point. We don't even really know for sure what's going on with what's going on right now. Anyone trust the reasons being offered up by the MSM? I don't, but I also can't say it isn't dissatisfaction with basic amenities.

I did a google search earlier today for Iran protests and it looks like they're scrubbing the results. I went through six pages and it's all MSM articles. Usually you'll see many results that are smaller outfits or even THIS IS A FALSE FLAG, but nope it's all MSM articles.

Best case scenario we get regime change and a different Iran that is cautiously pro-western and not interested in promoting terrorism in the region.

Worst case scenario things keep going on with the regime.

Another bad scenario is that the regime collapses and we find out the new boss is about as bad as the old one.

When Red China finally did the deed, it was with PLA units from outside Beijing - units with little or no sympathy towards the students they would kill.)

Also note that on June 17, 1953, the East German government lost the country and required the Soviet military to intervene to put down the uprising. Even East German units were unreliable at some point.

I think that there are Sunni willing to back the protestors and help stir the pot, though, because they want the Iranian regime to fall. 246 175 If Iran didn't have a population that was NOT totally Islamofascist, they would need the whole oppressive regime thing.

That's the whole point of it.

The Iranians rode the Ayatollah's horse against the Shah. They didn't get rid of the Shah because they wanted to join the 7th century - Iran had adopted Western dress under the Shah's father in the 30s.

But the Shah was a dick, the Iranians said, well, this guy will get rid of him, they brought him in.

And it turned out he was even more oppressive.
Posted by: blaster at January 03, 2018 06:44 PM (jHrzU)

The Shah wasn't that big of a dick - he had to contend with a bunch of slimy commies, which made being a kubaya liberal a little hard in trying to maintain a more modern country with some freedoms.

The commies hitched their wagon to the Ayatollah and thought they would be the ones in charge when they chased out the ailing Shah, who if he were a bigger dick than he was could have suppressed the insurrection.

The commies ended up on the shitty end of the stick after the revolution and the mullahs consolidated their power by killing them. Back then they would shout Death to Russia as much as Death to America.

The Shah was the second generation of his father's attempt to make Iran westernized like Ataturk did for Turkey.

But the Islamists can't stand that so they screwed Iran up, like they are doing to Turkey.

Imagine if Pinochet had to contend with Islamists AND commies. That was the Shah's challenge.

Usually with these things there is some sort of figure the protesters can rally around. In 1979 it was Ayatollah Khomenei, and he was in Paris. I am unaware of any figure who could step in or serve as a rallying point to elevate this into an actual revolution.

If memory serves, the students and commies were the ones who did all the heavy lifting back in '79. Khomenei and his cronies didn't come over until late in the revolution, when it was pretty much all over but the executions.

And of course, once the islamists usurped the revolution, the students and commies were among the first ones lined up against the wall, because they'd shown that they were willing to revolt against the powers-that-be.

Maybe. It's a logical possibility.

But the IRGC is comparable to the SS. They have no future - outside of prison or lead injections - if the regime falls. They are implicated in all of the horrors, foreign and domestic, that any prevailing opposition considers criminal.

Who knows. But for now I'm sticking with inertia as the winner here - i.e., no regime collapse. For now. As eastern Europe and the USSR showed, tyrannies can come undone so fast it's almost they just dissolved into thin air.

She said "My parents emigrated from Iran in '79 and they HATE Carter." (My own parents despise Carter for different reasons.)

So, would the Iranian community support Dems? An open question, I suspect. Especially if they came over here in '79.

342 The Trump effect is going worldwide!!!! Get used to it... Next Trump will go to the parts of the world where kids eat from garbage dumps and human waste is running in the streets.... That's the kind of love I see in his heart.. Putin's eyes not so much..

343 I keep hearing that some sort of deal is thiiiiis close for DACA amnesty. The "deal" of course will be instant amnesty for 800K illegals in exchange for enhanced border security sometime in 2020 that will of course never actually happen.

346 Speaking of hot Iranian women, I would offer you need to look no further than a woman who isn't getting a lot of sleep these days. A woman who can be found at the intersection of brains and beauty.

I of course am talking about The Foreign Desk's founder, Lisa Daftari.

347 I remember seeing footage from Romania with an army T-55, and armed civilians and/or police using the tank as cover, engaging Securitate troops holed up in some government building. That was pretty near the end for the Ceaucescus, I believe.

348 The mullahs told me that $175 billion in cash would be enough to stay in control.

I don't like being lied to, especially by my own kind.
